Message from the Department Co-Heads News Volume 10, Issue 01 August 2015 Anthropology We would like to welcome Dr. Sara Shneiderman, who joined our department in January and who begins teaching this fall and Dr. Daisy Rosenblum, who joined our department in January and who will begin teaching in term two. We welcome back Dr. Shaylih Muehlmann, Dr. Nicola Levell, and Dr. Leslie Robertson who are returning to teaching this fall. Finally we would like to congratulate Dr. Gaston Gordillo, who is the Acting Director of the Peter Wall Institute this year. We are planning many events for the coming year including a number of talks by well-known anthropologists. In September French archaeologist Jean-Michel Geneste the author of Cave of Forgotten Dreams will be speaking in the department. Also speaking in September will be linguist and anthropologist Luisa Maffi, the Director of the International NGO Terralingua. In early October Tim Ingold, the author of Making: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art and Architecture, Being Alive: Essays on Movement, Knowledge and Description, and The Perception of the Environment: Essays on Livelihood, Dwelling and Skill will be here for a graduate student workshop and to present the Hawthorn Lecture. This is our last year as Co-Heads and we wanted to take this opportunity to thank everyone for your support. The Dean’s office will be forming a search committee for the new Head later this term. Best wishes for an enjoyable and productive year! Welcome back to students, faculty and staff. Many thanks to all of you for spreading the word about the great ANTH and ARCL courses offered by our department. Positive student responses have led to many of our courses having high enrolments, and a large number of courses, including our new course, Eating Culture, ANTH 210, (taught by Dr. John Barker) are full to capacity. This year’s Chair of the Anthropology Undergraduate Studies Committee is Dr. Charles Menzies. Dr. Mike Blake is continuing for a second year as Chair of the Anthropology Graduate Studies Committee. Message from the Department Co-Heads

News

Anthropology

We would like to welcome Dr. Sara Shneiderman, who joined our department in January and who begins

teaching this fall and Dr. Daisy Rosenblum, who joined our department in January and who will begin

teaching in term two. We welcome back Dr. Shaylih Muehlmann, Dr. Nicola Levell, and Dr. Leslie

Robertson who are returning to teaching this fall. Finally we would like to congratulate Dr. Gaston

Graduate Program: Competition Announcements SSHRC Graduate Scholarships (PhD level) & Affiliated Scholarships (PhD level)

I. SSHRC Doctoral Canada Graduate Scholarships (CGSD)

All applicants MUST use the web-based application system to apply. Applicants must then print off, sign, and submit to the Anth Graduate Office the completed final version of the application, including transcripts and other attachments. The deadline by which applications for Doctoral-level funding must be submitted to the Anth Graduate Office (ANSO 2124) September 28th Monday, before 3 pm The deadline by which applications for Master's-level funding must be submitted to the Anth Graduate Office (ANSO 2124) TBA (most likely be December 1st, Monday) For more details, please check: https://www.grad.ubc.ca/awards/sshrc-graduate-scholarships SSHRC FAQ/Help with Online Forms: http://www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca/funding-financement/forms-formulaires/help_forms-aide_formulaires-eng.aspx

II. UBC Doctoral AFFILIATED FELLOWSHIPS

All students regardless of citizenship are eligible to apply. Canadian citizens and permanent residents are required to apply for graduate scholarship funding from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC, if they are eligible to do so.

Applicants submit their application materials to the Anth Graduate Office. Please note that students who submit a Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC) award application to the Anth Graduate Office are also automatically considered for Affiliated Fellowship funding, and do not need to submit a separate Affiliated Fellowship application.

The deadline by which applications for Doctoral-level funding must be submitted to the Anth Graduate Office (ANSO 2124) September 28th, Monday, before 3 pm

Douglas College, Kwikwetlem/Coquitlam, July 23. Bruce Granville Miller 2015 Invited Keynote: “What’s Changed in the Coast Salish World Over Forty Years? One Person’s View,” All Nations Festival, Kwikwetlem: A Celebration of Coast Salish History, Culture, and Identity, Coquitlam, July 23.

On Thursday, August 13th, former ASA Co-President and recent alumna Nicole Aleong hosted a discussion at AnSo with undergraduate anthropology students on the topic of design anthropology. Design anthropology is an emergent trandisciplinary field between anthropology and design. The discussion was organized in conjunction with the conference titled "Design Anthropological Futures" being held in Copenhagen, Denmark on August 13th-14th by the Research Network for Design.
