I believe most of you know me as I have been the EBGI's treasurer for the last 5 years and before that a council member. Therefore, it gives me great pride to now take on the responsibility of leading this very prestigious business group. From the day of its foundation, I have seen the Group maturing into a strong business networking organisation serving the European Businesses in India, now into its 15th year. This has happened largely thanks to the unstinting hard work of former Chairman Mr. David Hudson and his dedicated Council, as well as the invaluable support of our members. Together you have helped in shaping the organization to its present structure. Mr. Hudson, stepped down as the EBG India Chairman as he is no longer stationed in India but I am delighted to inform you, that the country Council bestowed on him the new honorary position of Chairman Emeritus and therefore we will continue to benefit from his support and advice. My vision of the EBG is simple and closely reflects the EBG's mission statement: “The European Business Group (EBG) in India aims to promote Europe as India's most preferred business partner thus creating environment that allows European Business to flourish.” I look forward to your continuing support in the year ahead to ensure this objective becomes reality. The intention is to provide a common platform where European Business heads come together to discuss matters of mutual interest; expand business cooperation with India through effective win win policy advocacy; improve understanding of Indian market, particularly for new entrants; provide insights and contacts in political, legal and business areas in India; understand and overcome complex regulatory challenges and work closely with EU Delegation in India and authorities in Brussels. The Council, made up of representatives from the membership and the EU delegation, has plans for several new initiatives aimed at enhancing the prestige and recognition of our Group. We are looking to increase our present membership, and count on existing members to bring on board new and dynamic representatives of the European business community. Mr. Ansgar Sickert, a senior member of the Council, having contributed very significantly to growth of EBG in India, will continue to successfully steer the new membership drive. The Annual Position Paper that we produce has now been introduced as an official document in the Indo-EU Bilateral discussions. We intend to start work on the 2012 edition in the near future. In addition to this, the EBG is invited to present our views at an annual pre-budget meeting with the Finance Ministry, in addition to having meetings with many other government departments. This is a direct reflection of the increasing trade between India and the EU and its as yet untapped potential. We want to make the EBG Sector Committees more active and are looking at starting new Sector Committees: Defence, Automotive, Education and Infrastructure. While Delhi continues to host most of the Sector Working Groups, Working Group on Innovation in Bangalore and Working Group on Banking and Finance in Mumbai Chapters have made extremely important contributions to the Position Paper. In the year ahead, EBG will organize a broader series of business ([email protected]) ([email protected]) networking meetings using different formats. These will include interaction with successful Indian businessmen and industrialists on the one hand, senior technocrats and bureaucrats handling large infrastructure projects on the other, as well as European and Indian policy makers, politicians and Ministers. We would also like to invite leaders of opinion and look at some of the wider issues affecting the business environment in India today. Apart from the business meetings, we hope to increase social networking events and opportunities for members to exchange views and experiences. Mr. Raman Sidhu, the newly elected Vice Chairman of the Country Council, with tremendous contacts with high profile speakers, will plan and head this effort on pan-India basis. There will be increased dealings between EBG and the European Commission and the EU Delegation in India as the EBG has been providing important inputs to EU during the continuing negotiations of EU-India Free Trade Agreement. The EBG looks forward to its successful conclusion and will continue to closely work with EU authorities in creating optimum conditions for trade and investment in India. We will be kept informed about any important visits of senior officials from European Commission to organize sector specific meetings. The EBG is taking a new initiative to manage EU funded projects, the first one being the FP7 Project “Galileo Asia” Project (a satellite communication system). The EBG will support the European Commission in developing and implementing a GNSS strategy for G5 Asia Region- Japan, Korea, China, Taiwan and India. We are proud to announce that this project will be handled by the Bangalore Chapter. The EBG is an integral part of the Worldwide European Business Organisations (EBO's). We are also working very closely with the European Business and Technology Centre, where the EBG India office is housed. EBG is also associated with Association of Accredited Lobbyists to the European Union (AALEP) based in Brussels to look at the possibility of closer working relations with the European Union. EBG will be releasing the much-awaited Pan India European Directory next month. We hope to give a new look to both the website and the Newsletter, making them more relevant to you. Our Delhi Chapter under the leadership of Ms. Birthe Foster has had one of its best years with all round activities and developments. Mr. Kersi Hilloo in Mumbai and Ms. Anandi Iyer in Bangalore have led their respective chapters to grow from strength to strength. We are now planning to open a fourth chapter in the country with the intention to have six chapters by 2014. All of this has been made possible through the strength and support of our membership. I hope you will join me in 2012 as Ambassadors of the Group, helping to represent and promote European Business in the exciting development of this great country. Message from Chairman, European Business Group in India

As incoming Chairman of the European Business Group, I am pleased to wish you all a very busy and successful 2012.

EU News & Economy

Macroeconomic Indicators: India

News from the EU Delegation

The last months have been very busy ones for the Delegation, leading up to the Twelfth EU-India Summit that took place in New Delhi on 10 February.

The new Head of Delegation, João Cravinho arrived in December to take over from Danièle Smadja, who returned to Brussels at the end of October. Ambassador Cravinho was previously Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation in Portugal. He was already able to meet EBG council members in January to discuss future co-operation opportunities and been able to meet a good range of EBG member companies during events in the margins of the Summit.

Neelie Kroes, European Commission Vice-President and EU Commissioner for the Digital Agenda, visited New Delhi on 24/25 November. This visit was useful in making clear at a political level and with the sectoral regulator the EU's concerns on potential mandatory local purchase and IPR requirements for telecoms equipment and in providing an opportunity to engage with the different industry stakeholders, including on the European side. Telecoms and IT Minister Sibal confirmed that new policies in the sector are not intended to ring-fence it from international competition and will be implemented in a WTO-consistent manner. Vice-President Kroes and Minister Sibal agreed on the need to intensify the bilateral regulatory dialogue and cooperation in areas such as network security, standards, skills and R&D. These topics will be taken up in the next meeting of the EU-India Joint Working Group on the Information Society in late March. Vice-President Kroes also met with EU

telecom equipment manufacturers and other members of the EBG sectoral committee on these and other topical issues of concern, including the licensing framework for telecoms service providers, telecoms security, taxation issues and standards.

Intensive negotiations also continued on the EU-India FTA. At the EU-India Summit of 10 February, political leaders expressed satisfaction on the substantial progress that has been achieved and called for intensive efforts to be maintained to achieve an early conclusion. Both sides recognised the need for the future agreement to be ambitious and balanced, so as to give a significant boost to trade, investment and growth prospects in both the EU and India. EU Trade Commissioner Karel de Gucht, who met his Indian counterpart Anand Sharma on 9 February to take stock of the progress made, was also able during his visit to meet a cross-section of EBG members to hear their interests and concerns at first hand. He and the Delegation were also grateful to EBG for hosting a successful cocktail in the evening of the 9th with wider members of the European business and diplomatic community in India.

During the autumn, we also updated the "top ten" listing of priority barriers to trade with India, in coordination with the EU Member States. This is essentially a working tool that supports regular ongoing lobbying efforts (in supplement to the FTA negotiations) by the EU and its individual Member States to reduce or eliminate important existing barriers to trade and in some cases to head off the creation of new ones. The main changes introduced as a result of this latest updating exercise were to add a new, horizontal entry for local content requirements, currently covering railway safety equipment, solar power plants, wind turbines and telecom equipment, to drop the issue of import restrictions on natural and artificial stones and to update the factual state of play concerning cotton export quotas, postal services, radial tyres and telecommunications licensing requirements.

EBG Information

EBG India Country Council

The idea of the Sector Committees is to bring people of the same industry together so they can discuss best practices, share information and collectively try to resolve common problems. Each Sector Committee contributes to their part in the Position Paper. We have seen from the EBO's around the world that their keypoint of success have been their Sector Committees. Likewise, we believe that the Sector Committees are a key area to the success of the EBGI.More news/information on sector committees in forthcoming Newsletters.

EBG News

The European Business Group (EBG) today stands where it is due to the vision and efforts of one of its founder member, Mr. David I Hudson MBE. As a visionary, he quickly realized the wisdom in representing Europe as a single trading block to the world and founded the EBG with the support of the EU Delegation and the European Business Community in 1997. He consequently went on to build and strengthen the Group during his tenure as the EBG Chairman. He lent it his characteristic warmth and energy. The Group has now become the official business arm of the EC and has Chapters in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore with over 300 members that include the top European companies. worked relentlessly with various stakeholders and helped the EBG emerge as a leading Business body which is recognized and heard not only by the EU but also by the Indian Government in matters concerning EU-India trade. He has given a lot of time to the EBG and nurtured it as his own baby. EBG stands proud today with a permanent office, set up in 2010, with the strong support of Mr. Hudson. Mr. Hudson excells in all walks of life. An astute leader and brilliant Businessman, Mr. Hudson has contributed enormously to society. He led

Mr. Hudson

a very active CSR programme in India where his company looked after many causes, particularly with children, old people and against drug addiction. He gave support to the Grant Grant Govan Memorial Homes, (a retirement home for Anglo-Indians of limited means) and as its Chairman is responsible for having totally renovated the Homes. He has been personally responsible for renovating the Nicholson Cemetery as well as doing extensive work with Tihar inmates. Mr. Hudson has lived overseas for the last 35 years with the latter 21 being resident in India. When first coming to Delhi in 1989, Mr. Hudson started the Group 4 operations, which today of covers 28 countries employing in excess of 250,000 people. Using this as a base, Mr. Hudson has spread G4S operations throughout the Middle East and Southern Asia. This is testimony to his business prowess and leadership abilities. He retired from G4S in December 2010. He then also stepped down from the Chairmanship of the EBG being no longer stationed in India. He however, remains as Chairman Emeritus of the EBG, a Business Group he has held so close to his heart. It is difficult to imagine somebody having done so much in a span of three decades without the support of his charming wife Pam who stands by him in every manner and undoubtedly provides him the much needed support in his personal time, if he is left with any! While success and fame chases him, he remains a very soft spoken, down to earth, witty and compassionate person who rules the hearts of friends and associates. It is impossible to do justice to this extraordinary person in few hundred words, but we nevertheless salute our Chairman Emeritus, David Hudson, and wish him a Healthy, Prosperous and Active retired life where we are sure he will find many more causes to work for and create more success stories in the times to come.

Entertainment and Hospitality

If you love skating and can't wait to enjoy your favourite activity, you should

know that you can skate year round in India. For an original getaway with

your family or friends, Bird Group's latest venture iSKATE invites you to

lace up your skates and glide to the beat of lively music in a spectacular

setting. This 15,000 sq.feet ice skating rink and café opened its doors

around the Christmas season of 2011. The ice rink—called iSKATE— is

open for "foam" parties, too--with foam blasters covering the entire rink in

foam.

US-based Skating Events is supervising all the technicalities of the rink. At

the ice rink, Bird Group will also introduce "ice games" that are rarely

played in India such as broomball (which is very popular in countries such as

Canada) and ice stock. The rink's location in Ambience mall about 300 m

from the toll gate (on the Express Way) is expected to draw crowd from

both Delhi and Gurgaon because of its innovative concept and ideal

location.

Located on the 6th floor of Ambience Mall, Gurgaon, iSKATE can

accommodate upto 200 skaters at any given point of time; additionally the

viewer's gallery can accommodate in excess of 200 people. The rink is

encompassed by a visitor's gallery, where one can choose to sit and view

skaters while enjoying the laser lights that transform the ambience to an ice

disco zone. Customers can hire special boots, skates and sticks on hourly

basis. A team of professional trainers have also been hired to guide

customers at the rink. High-end technology and de-humidifiers are used

here to maintain proper cooling for the ice even during peak season of

summer.

Aimed to contribute to India's growing participation at the Winter

Olympics, iSKATE will promote ice hockey, figure skating and the other

winter sports in the National Capital Region(NCR). While the younger

group can use penguin aids to walk on the ice, the older group can learn ice

skating from a pool of professional coaches and trainers at iSKATE. iSKATE

will also launch the Penguin Club. This club will be the next stage for

budding skaters to take up winter sports, get individual attention and begin

private lessons in preparation for competitions. It will be a special practice

zone for kids where they can learn to skate on synthetic ice before stepping

on to the main rink. The Penguin Club will help the early learners to gain

stability and dexterity on ice.As of now, there are only three major indoor ice skating rinks in the

country—the Doon Ice Skating Rink in Dehradun, a small ice rink at Essel

World in Mumbai (near Borivali) and an ice rink in Hardy World Theme

Park, Ludhiana. Besides skating on ice, there are multiple options to ensure a fun-filled

experience at iSKATE. You could enjoy a game of broom ball, ice curling or

ice hockey or opt for karaoke sessions at the karaoke lounge located on

the mezzanine floor of iSKATE. There is also a provision for hosting private

parties and birthday bashes at the iSKATE party room, which is furnished

to cater to special functions. The ice rink also has a café and a bar where

one can choose from an extensive food and beverage menu. The retail

outlet, which shall be launched shortly will offer iSKATE branded gear and

merchandise. One can pick up stylish clothing along with other collectibles

and souvenirs. Bird Group intends to take iSKATE – India's first ice skating rink and café

concept to 10 locations within a span of the next 5 years, with the second

one to be launched in Ambience Mall, Vasant Kunj by December 2012. The

aim is to provide world class infrastructure to create a ready avenue for

ice/ figure skaters, ice hockey players and budding professionals across

Technology

Internet everywhere has become a prerequisite, with millions of new

subscribers being added every month to the global pool of existing

consumers who enjoy the benefits of high-speed and high-capacity mobile

broadband. For some consumers, being connected has become as

important as having electricity. In addition, there are billions of people

using the mobile phone in emerging markets, mostly with limited or no

access to computers. This creates immense potential for the mobile phone

as an internet access point.

Mobile broadband is one of the greatest innovations. To make mobile

broadband really take off, the industry needs three elements that would

take time to develop: networks, devices, and services/applications. The

development of 3G technology and the emergence of the internet ware,

two big factors that are helping in building the mobile broadband

momentum. Once some traction is established, the constant demands for

faster data rates will help drive the evolution of the technology.

Mobile broadband adoption has accelerated with strong growth of

smartphones, connected laptops and tablets, supported by the

introduction of high-performance networks. Smartphone users are

increasingly using applications and internet services on the go. Globally the

mobile data traffic continues to grow rapidly. According to Ericsson

estimates mobile broadband subscriptions from the current estimates of

900 million is expected to reach 5 billion by 2016 with 95 percent driven by

HSPA, CDMA and LTE networks. The largest number of subscriptions is

expected to be concentrated in the Asia Pacific region, followed by North

America and Western Europe. We predict that mobile data traffic will

grow 10-fold by 2016, mainly driven by video.

The switch to smartphones is leading to mass internet usage and a shift in

behavior, attitude and usage among consumers. We are seeing a trend

where all kinds of people are using smartphones, not only the tech-savvy or

professional types. A survey by Ericsson Consumer Lab titled 'Ericsson

Consumer Lab Study on Indian Smartphone Usage and Pattern of

Consumption' suggests that the PC is losing ground to the smartphone. In

India, smartphones now account for 49% of time spent on the internet. PCs

are used 29% of the time, followed by laptops, which account for 22% of

time spent on the internet.

For Ericsson, worldwide Mobile Broadband has been an incredible journey,

from coining the term and filing the patents to realizing and planning the

future. It's not just about technology, but about exploring a whole new way

of doing business. In India, we believe that Mobile Broadband will transform

the Internet as radically as mobility changed telecommunications.
