COMMODORE’S REPORT Bryan Cox

Yes Christmas (sometimes known as the “Silly Season”) has caught up to us all again and I guess you, like me, will all be wondering what the next 3-4 weeks will bring. I hope yours will be an enjoyable one with family, friends, the opportunity to renew old friendships and especially the opportunity to make new ones - what better place to do these things than at your club. If you have some spare time over this period why not come down and enjoy the facilities on offer. Subject to weather I am told the repairs to ramp number 1 (eastern ramp) will be carried out on the weekend of 8th and 9th of December this may cause some congestion and delays on the other ramps and we would ask for your patience whilst this very important and long awaited work is done. Peter (our Bosun) will be on the ramps and I’m sure if members follow his directions any delays will be kept to a minimum. I am very happy to be able to report to you that we have reached the final stages of drafting the new constitution and all being well we should be able to distribute the draft to all members prior to Christmas which will mean we can hold a general meeting to discuss and approve the draft early in the new year. It has been a long and hard road to reach this point in the preparation of this new constitution and I hope all members will take the time over the holiday period to review the document so that when we do hold our meeting all members will be comfortable with it. It is of course crayfish season again and I guess many of you have already placed your pots out or have been diving for your catch. Having read some of the numerous reports regarding the prospects for this year I would have to say I am not very optimistic about the catch but to all of you who try I wish you good luck and hope you have crayfish on the table for Christmas. On that note on behalf of all the Flag Officers, your committee, the club staff and all the other members I would wish you a very happy and safe Christmas and a prosperous and safe new year .

Dive News Lynsey Carter

Now we have a hat trick plus one for cancelled dives.

The November dive was expected to be the opening account for our crayfish competition. Although the forecast wasn’t very promising, we had three boats turn up for the dive. We stood around for an hour hoping the very brisk southerly would drop and enable us to complete our dive.

After watching several boats clear the marina heads and then ‘U turn’ back in again due to the very rough seas, it was clear that this dive could not happen. Apart from the bump ride out and the difficulty of getting an anchor down in the rough conditions, we had to consider the hazards of re-boarding our craft in very lumpy conditions.

It is very intimidating to be in the water at the stern of a boat that is pitching up and down so violently that the propeller is coming out of the water and threatening to part your hair as it plunges back down. Trying to find the rungs of the boarding ladder while it is sawing up and down is a good recipe for a broken leg.

Although not an official strong wind, I decided to call off the dive in the interest of safety. Not too many objections from the other guys.

On the crayfish scene, Mary and I went for a dive on the opening of the season but had to abort after ten minutes due to gear failure.

The plastic buckle of Mary’s weight belt broke and her weight belt slipped off as she was exiting a cave. I caught sight of her hanging onto the belt with one hand and her torch in the other suspended in an inverted vertical direction. I grabbed her and stuffed her back into the cave to prevent her from rocketing to the surface if she let go of the weight belt.

While not of serious nature, this failure meant that we had to abandon the dive. Whilst in the cave we explored the options of putting the weights in the B.C. jacket pockets or tying a knot in the belt, but neither solution was workable. Fortunately we were directly beneath the boat, and a slow ascent allowed us to surface right next to the boarding ladder.

Having gone to great lengths to jamb the anchor securely into a crevice, I now had to go back down to release it. What luck, there were two white crays just waiting by the anchor for me to snare. Well that was dinner.

Why did I tell you all this (apart from filling up this column)? Well it seems that the cray season is not as bleak as has been predicted in the Newspapers. I saw quite a number of crayfish (reds and whites) well back under the ledges, but very timid to come out. So it’s not all doom and gloom.

RAMP UPDATE: - I have arranged for the contractor to come along on Saturday 8th Dec because there will be a low tide. Our group of divers and some volunteers will be commencing work at 7.00am to remove the block mat ramp and replace it with pre made concrete panels. This is not the usual busy bee (which has been moved to the 1st Dec for the kids Xmas Tree), but if you wish to assist, your help will be welcome.

ROPE AND KNOTS NIGHT I’d like to thank all those who attended the Rope and Knot night (especially my assistants) for making this a great fun night. Chris Gaudet was as usual a great source of knowledge and has adopted this night as his opportunity to contribute to the boating community. Chris has generously contributed all of the materials used to the Club and has in effect made a $600 contribution to our Club. Next time you need something for the boat, you will find him just as generous to our Club members (see his add under Boating Hardware Pro Sail), but beware – he loves a chat! MERRY XMAS TO ALL To members and families of the Club, I want to wish you the very best ever Xmas and festive season. Wishing you all safe boating and partying for 2008. That’s it from me SEA U LYNSEY

Social Up-date Yvonne Duperouzel

At the time of writing this we would have had the children’s party and I think I can say that it was a great success. This year we had over two hundred and twenty children which is up on previous years. I would like to thank everyone who was involved. Members if you have nothing planned for New Years Eve why not come down to the club and see the New Year in with fellow members. Remember the drink driving laws, so please bring your boat, tent or caravan down to the club and sleep the night. The first function for next year will be the “Middle Eastern Sundowner” in February and we will be having a display of belly dancers and some scrumptious food. So please make a tentative date in your diaries as this will be a very colourful afternoon. On behalf of the Social Committee I would like to thank all members who have participated in our functions for the year and hope to see you all next year. To the Social Committee people I would especially like to thank you for your help and support during the year. Finally we would like to wish everyone a very merry Christmas and a safe new year.

Safe and happy boating.

P.S. From Catherine; Christmas Dance

As a member of the Social Committee I would like to extend a warm thank you to all the cheerful members who made this year’s decoration of the club rooms and the Christmas Dance such enjoyable occasions. The music was by “Pretty Fly” this year and the vote to invite them back for a future function was unanimous. The night flashed past and it was a shame to break up the party when midnight arrived. Numbers attending were low this year but those who joined in the festivities enjoyed the ambiance, excellent company and good music. Don’t forget the New Year’s Eve party at Cockburn Power Boat Association. This is always a rowdy affair where each New Year is welcomed with enthusiasm and good will. See you there!

Mid-Week Group Lorna Clark

Greetings All, How fast the year has flown, November already and the 23 members present made the most of a happy fun filled day. Sick List.: Numbers were down as some folk are still away, gadding about here, there and everywhere, plus unfortunately there are those on the sick list. These included both Joan & Bill Walton, Eric Cook and Pat Topliss,. Please all get better soon, your smiling faces are missed, we need you with us. Fay Whitehouse, though present to-day, did have a nasty turn recently and ended up hospital in intensive care. This on the day of their 60th wedding anniversary! Plans made for this wonderful occasion had to be put on hold. Best wishes to you both for many more anniversaries. Facts: Dolores Chester made it to Ireland 2 weeks after their grandson arrived. How nice to have a little one to spoil. Where are the Morrisons to-day, couldn't discover their whereabouts.? To you and anyone else who have been missing, hope you all make it to our Christmas 'do.' Simply to prove my swimming wins, I produced my three medals and was given a cheer for them. Then a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday to You', which was to-day. Thanks to everyone for that. Christmas Function. Bill S. made mention of our special day . This is on the 5th December and will commence at 4.30p.m., time to socialise and imbibe a drink or two before dinner at 6 p.m. Come dressed in Christmassy type glad rags to add to the occasion. Once again everyone is asked to buy a gift, to the value around $5, males for males and females for females, and bring along so that everyone will get a 'goody'. Bill said he had contacted Father Christmas who assured him that though he has reindeer problems, he will definitely make it to our function. Marie reported what the menu is - sounds good - hope everyone enjoys it and no one eats too much!

Games Reports: Bowls A happy crowd to-day. 9 ladies and 7 men. All were in a jovial mood, there was much debating on how close their ball went to the Kitty. No arguments! Sue was Deanna's offsider and did a good job, didn't have to call too often. It was a bad day for Browns, they were losing every game, , the brown balls were jinxed according to the players, then salvaged some pride by winning the last two games. Final score BLACK 9, Brown 2, which was better than a zero score. Next month Brown, get revenge !!

Euchre: Sam Topliss kindly stood (or sat!) in for Bill W. and it was a close tussle, with FRED S. and IVAN tying with SAM and KEITH, one game each.

Rummy: Not enough members to make up the numbers, Fay and Lorna the only two players present, they sat and watched the bowlers, making sure there was no wrong scores given.

History of the Dog. On the first day of creation, God created the dog.

On the second day God created man to serve the dog. On the third day, God created all the animals of the Earth

to serve as potential food for the dog. On the fourth day, God created honest toil so that man could labour

for the good of the dog. On the fifth day, God created a tennis ball so that the dog might

or might not retrieve it. On the sixth day, God created veterinary science to keep the dog

healthy and the man broke. On the seventh day, God tried to rest, but he had to walk the dog.

Cheers for now. Don't forget to buy a gift for the 5th December 'do'. Lorna.

Birthdays for December Fred Ayres; 19th

Marie Anderton 26th. Congratulations & Best Wishes.

FREEBIE: If anyone would like 28 doz, King Browns in cartons or one double camp stretcher bed, ring 9337.7047 - now - you may be first in!

Beach Antics: There was a charming and delightful looking girl in a bikini on the beach., who was approached by a stern looking beach inspector. He said, "only one piece bathers allowed on this beach" She replied in her most seductive voice, "O.K. I've no problem with that, which piece would you like me to remove."

Sportfishing Report Angus Boult-Lyne

Fishing Competition: The Weigh Master, Colin McKinley reported that 7 boats went out for the November competition with 6 returning to the weigh in – there is still no sign of dick and John on Parakeet. Bushranger and Polly went off shore while Despicable, Grisso 1, Green Back and DJ remaining in the calmer in shore waters. The competition is hotting up as the year draws to a close and a rush is on to secure extra points. The weather was interesting for the competition with a forecast 10/15 Kt SE winds for a period about midmorning making the sea a bit unpredictable. Maintaining footing was a challenge and it was a bit like fishing in a washing machine. The offshore bag included Samson Fish, Pink Snapper, King George Whiting, Break Sea Cod, Baldchin Groper, Sweep and Queen Snapper. The in shore haul included Tailor, Skippy, Silver Bream and Herring.

For the record the points for the day were:

Braided Line

At the Fishing Group meeting on Monday 19 November 2007 there was further discussion on the acceptability of braided line for the competition. It was agreed that the group would adopt the ANSA WA resolution to accept fish caught on braided line on the proviso that there is at least 1.5 meters of pre tested unbraided line between the braided line and the leader rig. The point was made that the unbraided line had to be certified pre tested and these can be obtained from tackle shops.

Peter Anderton agreed to present a workshop at the next Fishing Group meeting to familiarize members with pre tested line and appropriate knots for tying nylon to braided line. All members are welcome to attend this meeting. Peter will also explain the details of the ANSA WA resolution including the maximum length of leaders.

Group Trips

As reported in the previous newsletters a group has booked for Club Thevenard at the Mackerel Islands for the period 31 May 2008 to 7 June 2008. The contact person is Des Kelly. Members and friends wishing to go on the trip should make their own accommodation arrangements.

The group has made arrangements to stay at Coral Bay on the following week where they will meet with other club members. They plan to stay at the Bayview Caravan Park in Coral Bay.

Works and Grounds Ian Mahoney

The Works and Grounds Team are pleased to report on another productive busy bee on Saturday 1 November.

The weather was perfect for boating but 20 members and partners resisted the lure of the ocean and turned up to do their bit.

Spring cleaning and general maintenance were the focus of the day. Over the next few months the team plans to turn out all the storage areas and rationalise the amount of trash and treasure stored over the years. This month the store rooms in the under croft were the primary target, a new notice board was erected in the boat preparation area and we hung the Commodore with his predecessors. The radio tower was also the focus of attention with a willing team cleaning and reorganising.

The team plans to organise a skip bin for a big cleanout of the sheds in an upcoming busy bee.

All members and partners are encouraged to join in for a busy bee at least once in a while. Just turn up at 8.30 on the advertised date and make yourself known to the group. You can count on a warm welcome and some good fun during the morning. Morning tea is provided to sustain the willing workers. Marcia treated us to her special spring rolls this month and has promised another treat sometime in the New Year. Colin baked a carrot cake which seemed to go down well.

If you notice any general maintenance issues as you use the club facilities please bring them to the attention of the Secretary so they can be rectified. A pad and pencil is kept near the office mail slot to assist members who wish to leave messages. Colin McKinley

Our new notice board has been erected alongside the preparation area where you can’t miss it..

REMEMBRANCE & REUNION

MEMBERS OF THE TS VINDICATRIX ASSOCIATION ARRIVED IN STYLE IN A BIG RED LONDON BUS

THE 11TH HOUR OF THE 11TH DAY OF THE 11TH MONTH The “Vindi Boys” take time to remember.

Members of the TS Vindicatrix Association chose the CPBA as the venue to hold their annual reunion for 2007. 93 members of this Association travelled from the UK, NZ and around Australia to attend the TS Vindicatrix Down under Reunion. Ranging in age from 60 to 84 years old they all trained at the National Sea Training School in Sharpness, Gloucestershire on the TS Vindicatrix. as 15 and 16 year olds. As friendly and charming a group of fellows as one would wish to meet, the 3 day gathering flew by with everyone having a wonderful time. Information about this Association and the history of the TS Vindicatrix can be found at: http://www.vindicatrix-hq.fsnet.co.uk/
