The Doorway To The GreaT wisconsin norThwooDs!
We are located in North Central Wisconsin in Lincoln County where the four seasons come alive with picturesque beauty and natural year-round outdoor recreational activities. Nature’s gifts are abundant here with cranberry bogs, maple syrup production and a world-renowned evergreen industry. Our motto is Location. Nature. People.
LocaTion. naTure. PeoPLe.
Due to our geographic location adjacent to I-39, our community enjoys a diverse indus-trial and manufacturing base that includes metals, window, door and product packag-ing, as well as being an ideal base for several distribution centers. Merrill is also home
to Church Mutual Insurance Company, the world’s largest insurer of worship centers, Weinbrenner Shoes, world-wide producer of safety work boots and military footwear and Reindl Printing, one of Wisconsin’s leading printing companies.

Our natural environment is historic and abun-dant offering untold options for the sportsman and outdoor enthusiasts. Merrill was incorpo-rated as a logging community in 1883 along the banks of the great Wisconsin River which meanders throughout the town and offers fishing, boating and camping experiences. There are more than 727 lakes in Lincoln County and more than 101,000 acres of public recreational land that offers public forests and trail systems.
Merrill has been dubbed ‘The City of Parks’ because of its 300 acres of parkland which of-fers recreational activities galore; hiking, ATV trails, horseback riding, snowmobiling, snow-shoeing, biking and cross country skiing trails. In addition to the aforementioned parkland, one of Wisconsin’s best state parks – Council Grounds – and a portion of the historic Ice Age Trail also call Merrill home.

Merrill is a great place to raise a family. We have an excellent school system that awards over $600,000 in scholarships annually to graduating seniors that are made available by Merrill benefactors. Our public library overlooking a scenic park, partially housed in a beautiful, historic building is a Carnegie Award winner and has all the amenities of a much larger city library. Superior health care is available for all ages with our hospital and choice of area clinics offering excellent medical care and services, including several outstanding assisted care facilities. Our resi-dents enjoy an outstanding quality of life in a community that is safe, friendly and activities are plentiful year-round, ranging from festivals to sports activities and many active commu-nity groups from Rotary to gardening clubs.

For the history buff, there is plenty to see in Merrill. It’s unusual for a small community of 10,000 to boast having four historic public buildings, a rare three-arch stone bridge and a historic district that includes 19 homes on the National Register of Historic Places and three additional National Register eligible districts comprised of numerous significant historical and register eligible homes. In ad-dition, our business corridors are lined with historic and architecturally significant build-ings and facades throughout. We also have an active Historical Society and museum offering numerous programs and activities throughout the year.
We hope that you enjoy our Visitors Guide to the Merrill area. When visiting Merrill, you will experience a friendly, small town charm that will beckon you back again and again. With so much to offer it is easy to understand why Merrill has been dubbed a “Choice Destination” by the award winning television program Discover Wisconsin.
Whether you are coming to Merrill for a visit or looking for a place to call “home,” stop by the Merrill Area Chamber of Com-merce for a warm Northwoods welcome. We are located at 705 North Center Avenue on the historic and scenic old Highway 51. Our information foyer is open 24-hours a

historyMerrill, wi
The city of Merrill was incorporated in 1883. The city was named after Sherburn S. Merrill, the general manager of the Chicago, Mil-waukee & St. Paul Railway Co., which had been extended to the community in 1880.
Before incorporation, the area was the village of Jenny, a logging community along the Wiscon-sin River. The village was built on the lumber industry and the timber boom of the 1800s. Sev-eral sawmills were constructed in the latter half of the 19th century. With the mills came workers and families, and commerce sprang up to serve them. The impor-tance of the railroad, which con-nected Merrill’s lumber industry to distant markets, could not be understated.
By 1885, the city had 7,000 inhabit-
ants. In 1889, Merrill’s original City Hall – now an apartment building –
was constructed at a cost of $16,375. That building served city govern-ment until 1977, when City Hall moved to its current location.
A police department was estab-lished when the city was incor-
porated with officers appointed by Merrill’s first mayor, T.B. Scott. The fire department was of-ficially organized in 1888.
Upon T.B. Scott’s death, he be-queathed money to start a public library, which opened in City Hall in 1891. With funding from the Andrew Carnegie Foundation, the original T.B. Scott Free Library was constructed in 1911.
The community’s first school was built in 1873. The first class of seven students graduated from Merrill High

School in 1883. A new high school, now part of Prairie River Middle School, was built in 1902. Construction of the current middle school and high school was undertaken in 1998.
Health care in Merrill received a boost with the coming of the Holy Cross Sisters in 1923. The Sisters established Holy Cross Hospital in 1926. Now known as Ministry Good Samaritan Health Center, the hospital
continues to serve the Merrill community.
Over the years, Merrill has come to be known as the City of Parks, with a Park Commission established in 1903. The first park purchased was Riverside Park in 1903, followed by Stange’s Park, Cenotaph Park, Athletic Park, Streeter Square, Ott’s Park, Lion’s Park, Gebert Park, the Merrill Area Recreation Complex, Prairie Trails Park and most recently River Bend Trail Park.

This monument was erected by the Merrill Council and Knights of Columbus in 1923 in honor of Pere Rene Menard, a French priest who was one of the first Europeans to walk and explore the wild land that has become Wisconsin. His final trek is still somewhat of a mystery, but some Mer-rill historians believe Father Menard’s life ended just north of Merrill. The Merrill Historical Society office hours are 9am to 1pm, Tuesday through Friday. The office is closed on holidays. Exhibits have extended hours Wednesday until 3pm and Saturdays 11am to 3pm (no extended hours in February.)
The Society Research Library maintains an extensive collection of documents, photographs and artifacts relating to local and regional history. These resources are frequently used by people who are doing genealogical research, studying the history of their home or business, or learning about the heritage of our community. Research Library hours are by appointment.
Programs are held at the Heritage Center, an 80-year-old church building owned by the Society, and include musical concerts featuring the pipe organ, speakers on historical topics, an annual ice cream social, and other programs.
A new museum addition opened in 2013 to consolidate exhibit, library and office spaces in a handicapped-accessible environ-ment that is critical to the effective utiliza-tion of all of the Society’s resources.
The Society’s vision is to help the com-munity of the Merrill area engage the past in new and exciting ways; foster partner-
ships and mutual growth and learning; and widen the circle of those who love history.
Join the circle and help us preserve the memories and memorabilia that make our community unique!

In October 2015, the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce handed out Business of the Year awards to four businesses and a non-profit group. Based on voting by Chamber members, Church Mutual Insurance Company was named Large Business of the Year, Dave’s County Market was named Mid-sized Business of the Year, Brickner’s Park City was named Small Busi-ness of the Year, RTL Electric was named Hometown Business of the Year and the Riverfront Development Foundation of Merrill was named Non-profit of the Year.

Church Mutual was founded on March 4, 1897, by two Lutheran pastors and eight lay-men from two Merrill congregations. For 119 years, Church Mutual has specialized in insur-ance for religious organizations. Their custom-ers now number more than 95,000 religious institutions of all denominations and about 3,000 homeowners.
The annual report in March 2015 revealed the company’s best combined ratio (88.7) in 35 years, the best two-year claims volume (56,433) in 25 years, the second-highest net income in history ($76 million), the highest direct written premiums in history ($639 mil-lion) and the highest policyholders’ surplus in history ($536 million).
In 2015, the company made a physical ex-pansion to their second facility and received unprecedented industry recognition. The year also saw a changing of the guard in Church Mutual leadership.
In April, CMIC addressed space limitations at the Merrill Home Office by signing a long-term lease to rent space in the former Walmart building at Pine Ridge Plaza. Church Mutual today has more than 1,000 employees, includ-ing 800-plus in Merrill.
“We looked at more than two dozen poten-tial locations across Central Wisconsin,” said Church Mutual President Rich Poirier. “We love our established relationship with the city of Merrill and wanted to remain where we have for the past 118 years.”
For seven straight years, CMIC’s Com-mercial Lines Operations Service Center has achieved top-10 ranking by BenchmarkPor-tal in competition involving more than 500 call centers in the United States and Canada. Church Mutual was also named to the presti-gious Ward’s 50 Top Performing Property & Casualty Insurers in 2015. The company was chosen from among 3,000 potential candi-dates.
CMIC partnered with Merrill High School students in 2015 to build a Reflection Center on the Church Mutual grounds. Later dedicat-ed in honor of retiring President/CEO Mike Ravn and his wife, Jean, the Reflection Center is part of a Human Resources’ internal well-ness initiative.
In September 2015, Church Mutual entered into a strategic alliance with Catholic Mutual to provide workers’ compensation and auto-mobile coverage. In October, Church Mutual acquired the insurance operations of the Penn-sylvania School Board Association (PSBA), in-cluding the School Board Insurance Company of Pennsylvania, Inc. (SBIC of PA) and School Claims Services, LLC (SCS). The move ex-pands the company’s public schools insurance initiative.
In November, Church Mutual announced the creation of CM|Vantage Specialty Insur-ance Company, an excess and surplus lines carrier that will be in operation and based in Madison in 2016.
In December, Poirier was named the com-pany’s new CEO to replace retiring Mike Ravn.
“I am proud of the company that Church Mutual is today,” Ravn said. “It’s been an in-credible experience to lead the company and it’s been a lot of fun. I’ve had the privilege to work alongside a team of extremely talented individuals and for a rare company that has always emphasized strong values and integrity paired with a mission shared with our policy-holders to improve the human condition.”
Poirier said, “I am honored to be asked to lead this great company and our employees in providing risk mitigation and protection prod-ucts and services to organizations that make a difference and improve the human condition in our communities and across our nation. I have a strong commitment to our company’s mission, values, policyholders and employees

and I am confident that commitment will en-able us to achieve great success in the future.”
As the year ended, the first wave of ap-proximately 200 employees moved into the multimillion dollar renovated building at Pine Ridge Plaza.
Church Mutual and its employees also contribute greatly to the Merrill community through donations to many local causes. For example, in 2015, Church Mutual’s support of the United Way once again reached an all-time
high as the combination of employee contri-butions and the corporate match brought in a total of $137,864.08. Church Mutual’s United Way contributions over the past eight years now total more than $712,000.
“This year’s employee campaign at Church Mutual Insurance Company was unbeliev-able,” Merrill United Way Executive Director Dee Olsen said. “This company and its em-ployees are essential to the success of our local United Way.”
DaVe’s counTy MarKeT – MiD-size business of The year
Dave’s County Market was honored as the Mid-size Business of the Year for 2015 by the Merrill Area Chamber of Commerce.
Dave’s County Market co-owner Barb (Bonnell) Haffemann said, “receiving this business of the year award from the chamber means more than any award because it comes from the business members and customers of Merrill and that is who we are in business to serve.” She also spoke of the values that she and her brothers learned about business from their father and mother.
Dave Bonnell started working in the Antigo Red Owl at the age of 15 and learned the gro-cery business from the bottom up. Dave pur-chased the Red Owl store in Merrill with his brother in 1975 and moved his business into a vacant department store building in 1997. He died unexpectedly in 2005.
Barb and her brothers, David and Jeff Bon-nell, now operate the store by their father’s guiding principles of always keeping the cus-tomer in mind. Their mother, Rita, is still in-volved with the business, but prefers to take a behind-the-scenes role.
“We want to thank our mom and dad,” Barb said. “They taught us the value of hard work, and that it’s all about your customer. We want to be the best we can for them.”
Dave’s County Market is involved in many service projects in the community, assisting with numerous fundraisers throughout the year. A stand in the parking lot is available for groups to use for their fundraisers at no charge.
They are a major sponsor of Lincoln Lager Barleyfest, a beer sampling festival that brings visitors to Merrill every October. Dave’s County Market has also supported projects such as the Merrill Historical Society building campaign and the construction of a veterans memorial.
Haffemann is also quick to credit the Dave’s County Market staff for their role in achieving success.
“We have a great staff,” she said. “They know what we want. It may say Bonnell fam-ily on the plaque, but it’s definitely due to our staff.”
A major remodeling and expansion proj-ect, completed in 2009, increased the store’s square footage while improving the shopping experience for customers. The expansion add-ed about 10,000 square feet of warehouse and receiving space. Moving storage to the new addition freed up space in the existing build-ing for departments to expand. In the second phase of the project, the front of the store was extended about 20 feet to the east. That part of the construction included a new covered parcel pickup exit. The third phase of the proj-ect was an interior remodel to make use of the newly created space. The number of shopping isles was increased from nine to 13. The liquor section was moved and now features a bigger walk-in beer cooler. The deli, bakery and fro-zen foods section also saw improvements.
Dave’s County Market currently employs about 150 people.

It all started in 1945 when Jerome Brickner Sr. moved his family from Milwaukee and bought a small auto garage in the unlikely locale of Little Chicago. From that humble beginning has grown a network of four large Chrysler dealerships now owned by his grand-
sons.“My grandfather built the business on ser-
vice,” said Jim Brickner, Jerome’s grandson and owner of Brickner’s Park City in Merrill. The Brickner Family also operates dealerships in Wausau, Antigo and at the original site in
Page 50 • Merrill Area Guide 2016
Little Chicago.Brickner’s expanded to the Merrill market
in 1988 with the purchase of the Bloechl AMC Jeep dealership. In 2001, the current Brickner’s Park City was opened on Hwy. 64 on Merrill’s east side. With the new facility, Brickner’s were able to expand from selling just Jeeps in Mer-rill to offering Chrysler, Dodge and Plymouth products as well. “Merrill was a great place to do business and with the investment we were able to service our long time customer much closer to their homes,” Jim said.
In 2006 Jim realized that the auto industry was heading for a difficult period and began preparing for the worst. When the Great Re-cession hit in 2008, Brickner’s Park City was able to weather the storm with only one em-ployee laid off and begin preparing for the future. In 2009 even though we were in midst of a recession, Jim built an addition to his Mer-rill facility for a new express service lane. “A wise man once told me that you grab market share when everybody else has their heads in the sand,” Jim said.
The express oil lane was a success and helps bring owners of other brands into the dealer-ship. “We win a lot of them over in the express lane,” Jim added.
2014 and 2015 were record years for Brick-ner’s Park City and were the impetus for a 2nd dealership building expansion.
“It is all about making the operation more efficient, plus we were able to fit in another Main Line Technican bringing our total num-ber to seven,” Jim said.
The past two years were also recognition years for Brickners, as they swept all three awards from Chrysler, the Customer Experi-ence Elite Dealer, Mopar Masters, and Penta-star Sales awards for 2014 and 2015, plus the Merrill Chamber of Commerce Small Busi-ness of the Year for 2015.
All the Brickner’s dealerships offer the full line of Chrysler products, Dodge, Chrysler, Jeep and Ram trucks.
Between the four locations, Brickner’s em-ploys about 200 people. The concept of “fam-ily” at Brickner’s extends to the employees, some of whom have been with the business for 30 or 40 years.
The Brickner Family of dealerships is also committed to their communities. Through Chrysler’s Drive for the Kids program, Ram Gridiron and Dodge Booster Club events, the Brickner’s locations raised a total of $35,000 for local schools last year.

After over two decades of service to the Merrill area, RTL Electric and owners Dan and Meredith Prebeg of Merrill aren’t show-ing any signs of slowing down quite yet. As master electrician Dan explains, the very roots of RTL Electric stem back to his childhood and his grandfather’s garage.
“Being an electrician and owning my own business is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a young boy. My grandpa would let me and my younger brother tinker around with things while he worked in his garage, so from that experience I had a strong mechanical knowledge from an early age.”
Prebeg maintained his interest through school and took advantage of the school-to-work coop program at Merrill High School, to begin developing his skills. It was around that same time he met Meredith, his wife of 20 years.
Dan moved on to become an apprentice and worked for four years before opening the original RTL Electric in the basement of the Prebeg family home in May of 1995.
“Our first business was out of our home, in
what is now our daughter’s bedroom,” Mer-edith adds.
The couple built the first RTL Electric shop in 2002 on their home property in the town of Corning, before moving to their present loca-tion at 107 E. First St. in 2006.
“It’s been amazing!” Meredith said. “The work we do has given us the opportunity to meet so many people in our community over the years and are happy to say that many have become friends! We can’t begin to express how appreciative and thankful we are for them.”
When asked of any particular point or event in their career which stands out, the high school sweethearts agree on the tornado of 2011.
“It was such a trying time for our commu-nity and a true honor to be there to help our community members when they needed us,” Dan explains. “We both spent many nights here at the office, answering calls at all hours of the day and night from dairy farms to resi-dential to helping local manufacturers get back up and running. By the following Saturday, I
Merrill Area Guide 2016 • Page 51
alone had put in over 90 hours. It was a long week, but a very satisfying experience for us.”
RTL Electric has now grown to become a full-service shop and business offering agricul-tural, industrial, commercial and residential electrical service and assistance, the couple now employs two electrician apprentices, a journeyman electrician and a part-time ad-ministrative assistant.
In addition, the Prebegs operate a full ser-vice fleet including three service vans, a boom truck and line truck.
“There’s are other companies that do same work we do,” Dan adds. “But our level of service and commitment to our customers is what sets us aside from the rest. Without our customers and crew, we wouldn’t be here. We have been very blessed.”

The River District Development Founda-tion of Merrill has been working tirelessly on development of the River Bend Trail, turning a former railroad bed into a hiking and biking trail along the Wisconsin River. The foundation raised the funds to purchase the railroad prop-erty and moved forward with plans to build the River Bend Trail.
A ribbon cutting was held in October 2015 to officially open the newly completed section of the River Bend Trail. The biking/walking trail parallels the Wisconsin River and currently runs along the former railroad bed from the end of South Park Street to West Main Street near the Sixth Ward bridges. The plan for the trail is to ultimately connect Council Grounds State Park and the Merrill Area Recreation Complex to the downtown area.
“We’ve got a magnificent group of people who’ve worked so hard and put in so many hard hours, some of whom have given money but most of whom have also given of their time and energy and taken time out of their lives,” said River District Development Foundation Chairman Gene Bebel. “This is a bike and a hike trail, but to some of us it’s something big-ger. In that it involved the whole community, it’s a project that we’re all kind of proud of.”
At the ribbon cutting, Merrill Mayor Bill Bialecki thanked the Foundation members for their efforts.
“This is going to be an incredible thing for our city,” he said. “With this new walk gracing our town, the younger people and some of our older ones will have a lot of good memories to carry forward. Thank you for all your time and effort that you put into this for this fine city of ours.”
The ribbon cutting event included the un-veiling of the temporary donor sign that will eventually be replaced by a permanent sign list-ing the initial donors who are to thank for this part of the trail.
The River District Development Foundation
of Merrill purchased from Wisconsin Public Service a 2-acre parcel which will serve as a Ro-tary Park Trailhead and a large metal building to be refurbished just east of the Center Avenue bridge. Also purchased was 100 x 1,500 feet of river frontage from the Rotary Park area east to the Semco property for the trail.
Further to the east sits the former Anson-Gilkey property, 13 acres of which were do-nated by the D&L owners to the River District Development Foundation. This property has had demolition in progress since last year. The River Bend Trail will continue through this property from Kyes to Cooper streets.
A trail feasibility study is presently being completed by Clark-Dietz Engineering to as-certain the problems, possibilities and priorities on all these newly acquired properties for future trail development going east from the Center Avenue bridge.
Going to the west, Merrill Sand and Gravel completed building the trail from Genesee Street west across State Street up to Hwy. 64 at the Wisconsin River bridge near Cottage Street. Paving was also completed last summer on the trail area from the Prairie River Nicklaus Fam-ily bridge to the Public Service dam.
The Foundation is initiating a new fund drive to raise money required to complete the trail and add amenities to the existing River Bend Trail.
Several committees have been working to keep making progress in all areas of trail devel-opment and improvements.
The trail is open for biking and walking. You can access it from the south end of Park Street on the east side or from the south end of Polk Street or West Main Street at the bridge on the west side. The Thrivent Way Trail is a scenic walking loop off the paved area of the trail. New brochures with a map are available at several locations in Merrill or at the Chamber office.
Fundraising is currently underway to install additional lighting along the trail.
