Read and Ride...

CHARLTON CENTRAL RESIDENTS ASSOCIATION (CCRA) in co-operation with South-Eastern Rail has launched an ‘Open Bookcase’ in the ticket hall at Charlton station. The idea is simple, everyone can take a book or leave a book and it’s free, with no registration required. This concept has been successful on the Continent and at other stations in London.

The Charlton Open Bookcase will initially include a wide range of adult fi ction including bestselling authors as well as a good range of children’s books. The selection of books will change depending on what is taken from and what is added to the shelf. It is worth allowing a few minutes in the morning to pick a read, or taking the kids to the station to choose a book.

THREE HUNDRED PRIMARY school children from across the Royal Borough of Greenwich sang an especially-composed piece of music to HM The Queen when she formally opened the renovated Cutty Sark Gardens in Greenwich.

The orchestral and choral suite, refl ecting the history and heritage of Greenwich, was commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich to commemorate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. Entitled ‘Diamond Greenwich’, the work was written for the occasion by local composer Errollyn Wallen MBE, based on lyrics contributed by some of the children involved.

CelebraTions have already begun to commemorate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee as the Queen travels the UK. To mark the occasion there will be an extra Bank Holiday on Tuesday 5 June and the last Bank Holiday in May has also been moved to Monday 4 June, creating a four-day weekend.

Employers may find themselves having to juggle extra leave requests. Acas (Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service) is reminding employers to plan ahead to avoid last-minute leave request clashes or short-term absences.

Acas National Helpline Manager Stewart Gee said: ‘For many, the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee is an opportunity to celebrate and with two Bank Holidays at the beginning of June, employers may receive more requests for time off. We’re already getting calls to the Acas helpline from employers seeking advice.

‘It’s important to be as fair and consistent as possible by having a policy on how to manage time off and leave requests so employees can join in the celebrations and employers can maintain morale at work.’

Holiday guidance: there is no statutory right to bank/public holidays, so the announcement of an extra Bank Holiday does not increase any entitlement to holiday under the Working Time Regulations.

Whether an employee will benefit from the additional Bank Holiday will depend

i reCenTly heard the Chamber of Commerce described as grand – a bit too grand and scary to belong to. Nothing could be further from the truth! yes, our Patron is HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and yes, he’s written to me this month, the 60th year of his patronage but that’s about as grand as it gets. Let me dispel this myth! The South East London Chamber of Commerce exists to promote

business between its members and to give assistance in competing for business both at local, national and international levels. In particular we welcome new businesses to the Chamber so that they may benefit from the fund of knowledge and expertise that exists within the bounds of our experienced membership.

There is no grand Chamber, although we do choose great venues for our networking lunches (2nd Wednesday each month) and breakfasts. The format is pretty relaxed and geared up to offer the best face to face networking around. To make the networking more accessible there is always a list of attendees and name badges to make it easier on the memory and introductions.

We pride ourselves in being in business for business, keeping our membership fees extremely affordable and great value for money. Some of the benefits of being a Chamber member:• Company entry and 5 pages in the Chamber Directory on the website• Advantageous Members’ rates for all events• Monthly copy of Masthead with Member news and comment• Priority access to pre-lunch free seminars• The opportunity to deliver a 1-minute pitch at the lunches• A link from the Chamber website to your Company website• 10% discount and free ‘Network with Confidence’ book when you join at an event

There is no obligation to join; you can attend a couple of lunches as a guest in order to try before you buy. of course, with all networking, the amount of energy you put in to it will reflect what you receive from it. To find out more, do call our friendly, not too grand, office team noW on 020 8317 3365 or visit www.selondonchamber.org

on the wording of their contract. For example, a contract which entitles a worker to 20 days annual leave in addition to all statutory, bank and public holidays would potentially give the worker an extra day’s paid holiday. But if public holidays are listed by name, in a contract, a worker may not be automatically entitled to the extra public holiday.

There is no legal right to be paid any extra for working a Bank Holiday. This will depend on the terms of the employment contract.

However many employers do provide incentives to work on Bank Holidays so it can be worth checking out any contractual obligations. For more information contact Parfitt Cresswell, www.parfittcresswell.com

Unique Corporate Hospitality Company, Sail Greenwich Ltd has brought Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus on board for this summer’s maritime spectacular - ‘Sail Royal Greenwich 2012’. The event runs from 25 July

to 12 August and incorporates corporate hospitality on a fl otilla of 16 historical Tall Ships.

Hospitality and catering students will be involved with the delivery of the inaugural Sail Royal Greenwich. This is a once in a lifetime experience for many students and will provide a window of opportunity for them to work alongside internationally renowned Michelin chefs Richard Corrigan (UK) and Ron Blaauw (NL). The students will be trained by and work together with the master chefs, helping to prepare dishes – to be served on board of the Tall Ships – such as Rillettes of Irish Salmon, Navarin of Lamb and Mousse of caramel, passion fruit, hazelnut and dill.

With a fl eet capacity ranging from 20 to 140 per ship, Sail Royal Greenwich 2012 expects to cater for over 1,200 corporate clients a day. Already, the students are familiar with sophisticated cooking standards at their City View Restaurant, as demonstrated by their month-long waiting lists for a table.

Furthermore, Sail Greenwich is also providing opportunities for students of the Travel and Tourism courses to be guides on the fl otilla to offer corporate clients fun facts about the Thames and local landmarks. Students will also attend workshops with a local tourist guide in order to learn about high-level events and receive tuition on to how to be outgoing and confi dent in social situations – important attributes for job seeking.

Head teacher Mark Vincent of Shooters’ Hill Post 16 Campus said: ‘Thanks to Sail Greenwich, we are now able to offer our students not only the highest level of

work experience, which will be brilliant for their CVs, but also the potential to make vital employer links leading to work opportunities in a diffi cult job market’.

Director of Sail Greenwich, Paulus Mooyman, added: ‘We are very proud to be part of Royal Greenwich. As well as employing Greenwich Residents, we are working closely with the Council to make this event part of the Greenwich Festivals for years to come. Now we are working with Shooters Hill Post 16 Campus to employ their students. The process of building a programme with the school has been a pleasure. Their students help to inspire us and being able to offer their students such opportunities really is the icing on the cake.’

PUPILS FROM PLUMSTEAD MANOR SCHOOL in Greenwich tackled the fast-fl owing rapids at Lee Valley White Water Centre as part of their Schools Festival – the only brand new London 2012 venue people can use and enjoy before the Games.

The second Lee Valley White Water Centre Schools Festival has meant more than 2000 pupils from every single London borough and across Essex and Hertfordshire have had a taste of the excitement of paddle sport by rafting the Olympic Standard Competition Course for free.

Derrick Ashley, Chairman of Lee Valley Regional Park Authority, said: ‘This is a fantastic opportunity for pupils from London, Essex and Hertfordshire to experience the thrill of 13,000 litres of water every second on the same rapids that the world’s best will take on in just a few weeks’ time.’

Based near Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, the Centre will host the fi ve-day canoe slalom event in front of 60,000 fans between Sunday 29 July and Thursday 2 August. It is also the fi rst London 2012 venue to secure a major championship following the Games, hosting the 2015 International Canoe Federation Canoe Slalom World Championships.Lee Valley White Water Centre will also host the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay on Saturday 7 July.

WITH GRANTS from Capital Growth, Southwark Council and a little money from The Brunel Museum, Lottie Muir, 42, from Rotherhithe, is building a fi fty feet diameter community food growing garden with the help of volunteers, at the Rotherhithe Shaft. Overlooked by residential estates the plot is ideally situated for the purpose and the project well received by local residents.

‘The project is bringing people together who were neighbours but never spoke to each other before. Gardening is great like that, it’s intergenerational and no matter how little knowledge you have you can make a contribution. I’ve recently been working ten-hour days with one neighbour who’s an artist and a carpenter, building three and a half metre by two metre raised beds, using half size oak railway sleepers,’ said Lottie.

Coming from a career in PR of 20 years, Lottie decided to enrol for the Level 3 Diploma in horticulture at Capel Manor after she inherited some money that meant she could afford to leave her job and retrain. ‘I have a friend who had studied garden design at the college but I never thought I’d have the opportunity. I have a real passion for gardening and plants so when my mother died and left me some money, instead of investing it in a property or something sensible like that, I decided to use it to get me through college.’

Lottie’s tutor and lecturer in horticulture at Capel Manor, David Nye said: ‘Urban farming projects are very popular at the moment with a huge trend of people exploring how to live in harmony with the land, fi nd out where their food comes from and redevelop neglected spaces which can also help generate local employment’.

Get the family and friends together, put up the bunting and head for the street party. Dress to impress this June in celebration of The Queen’s Diamond

Jubilee (2–5 June). Well, it is the Royal Borough of Greenwich after all!

This spring and summer you will fi nd some incredible fabrics in vivid colours, as well as soft neutrals and pastels, with the likes of Louis Vuitton and Mulberry layering pastel shades like an ice cream sundae. The most popular shade is soft mint green, but there will be lots of red, and tons of lace, not to mention fl owing fl oral prints and block colour dresses hanging on the racks.

This season, dresses and skirts will remain must-haves but fashion designers have also given us all kind of fun styles: fashions that will offer wonderful vivid prints, stripes, and geometric designs – not to mention some great new takes on animal prints. The main theme this spring is somewhat tailored, and classic, but with a touch of bold, and edgy.

Lace is everywhere and you can wear it with anything, from a touch of lace in a collar to a full-blown waisted dress in heavy gauged lace.

Creamy neutrals are in, all done up to give you a very feminine look. Think whimsical patterns. From bird prints to deer, fruit, feathers, you name it, tops with whimsical prints are also big. You will see these on everything from blouses to dresses.

Another colour trend for spring (especially in handbags and shoes) is neon... bright blues, yellows, greens, oranges and hot pinks. Feet need a rest from the very big heels, so kitten heels are back. This season they are feminine and classic, as well as comfortable.

Below you'll fi nd a selection of fashion that’s fi t for a queen. The yellow and white striped sundress (£45) and sequined Union Jack clutch (£28) are both from Next. Invest in a High Tea Dress - a pretty dress to see you through the long weekend in style. Whether it’s a fl oral tea dress, feminine frock or strappy sundress, it’s an essential item for any lady’s wardrobe. We love this classic blue colour block dress, (£38) from Next, which would

look great with a white cardigan if it’s chilly. If you're looking for a 'Middleton Moment', follow in the Duchess’ footsteps and add a blazer to your outfi t. Whether you decide to wear a dress or opt for a pair of jeans, a well-cut blazer will give a chic twist to your look. A cream lace jacket (£45) from Dorothy Perkins at OUTFIT, will look great dressed up or down.Visit greenwichshoppingpark.co.uk, fi nd Greenwich Shopping Park on Facebook and follow @ShopGSP on Twitter for more fashion tips from the Park.

THE HEALTH BENEFITS OF SINGING are well documented. Studies carried out by the Sidney De Haan Research Centre for Arts and Health at Canterbury Christ Church College, have shown evidence that taking part in regular group singing can signifi cantly improve physical and mental health. Better breathing and posture, feeling happier and a reduction in stress are just some of the positive benefi ts.

In a nurturing, supportive environment such as a choir, it can help to develop self-confi dence and new singing skills. Singing together and achieving such a great sound gives people a huge sense of fulfi lment.

ALL ARE WELCOME AT ROCK CHOIRWhen musician and singer Caroline Redman Lusher fi rst started Rock Choir™ in 2005, little did she realise what an amazing phenomenon she’d created. There was no big game plan – just a burning desire to reignite people's joy of singing, and give them a life-enhancing experience.

Michael Fricker (above, right) is the local Rock Choir leader for Blackheath, Bexleyheath, Dulwich and Avery Hill/Eltham. Originally from Switzerland, where he studied classical guitar, piano and voice at the Musikhochschule in Zurich, Michael

became a Rock Choir leader in 2010 and since then has been devoting his time to teaching Rock Choir members in what he describes as: 'The best job I’ve ever had.'

Anyone who wants to try

group singing is welcome at Rock Choir, there's no audition or requirement to read music, just a love of music and a sense of fun! For more information visit www.rockchoir.com. Sessions are held on Thursdays, 8pm - 9.30pm at The John Roan School (Secondary School Building), 143 Maze Hill, Blackheath, SE3 7UD.

EXCITING TIMES AHEAD… Blackheath Centre for Singing is an exciting new addition to the musical life of Blackheath and Greenwich. Based at the beautiful venue of Mycenae House, it offers weekly singing opportunities for adults of all musical abilities. From a singing group for beginners, right through

to advanced choirs and individual tuition from leading teachers.

Director of Blackheath Centre for Singing, conductor Joel Thomas, pictured below, has led numerous singing events across the South East, including a recent ‘Come and Sing’ day at St. Alfege’s, Greenwich, which attracted 100 participants. He is particularly excited about upcoming events at the centre: 'For many years I have been struck by the great appetite for music-making in this dynamic part of London. At Blackheath Centre for Singing we look forward to exciting times ahead, with a performance of Carmina Burana at St. Alfege’s on 7 July, as well as singing workshops from guest choir leaders.'Enquiries are always welcome. The popular BBC3 television programme, ‘Don’t tell the Bride’ has recently showcased several local iconic venues used for weddings. This may have given couples, about to start their wedding planning, food for thought in their search for the ‘Wow’

factor venue. And as venues come in all shapes and sizes, from palaces to great halls or stylish riverside gentlemen’s club to London’s only lighthouse, the choice is endless. But choosing the right wedding venue is the most time consuming part of your wedding planning and should be booked early, as they say, ‘to avoid disappointment’.

The Royal Borough of Greenwich has a plethora of stunning venues, which ranges from the intimate Fan Museum or Admiral’s House, the historic Trafalgar Tavern, or famous Old Royal Naval College Painted Hall, seen in many fi lms to Eltham Palace, built by the wealthy Courtauld family next to the remains of Eltham Palace, childhood home of Henry VIII.

With the Diamond Jubilee celebrations this summer, the River Thames becomes centre stage for the River Pageant and shows the romance of the river and perhaps some couples might like to incorporate the river in their nuptials. Perhaps arriving at their reception by riverboat or travelling from one side of the Thames for the wedding to the other for the reception, in your very own fl otilla.

Valerie Breese helps you fi nd the perfect venue

When couples start looking for wedding venues, too often they fall in love with the beauty of the place and sign a contract before they’ve considered the more practical things. It makes sense, who wants to look back and say only, ‘well, it was practical’?

But unless the place is so magical that you’re willing to plan your whole event around it, your shouldn’t choose between wedding venues until you’ve decided approximately how many guests you’re inviting and the size of your budget. You’ll also need to decide if you want a separate ceremony and reception or an all-in-one wedding venue. Many couples consider a venue that offers both the civil wedding and reception to make the logistics of guests traveling from one site to another, easier and reduce the cost.

Once you know these things, and you have a few wedding venues in mind that fi t that budget and size, then it’s time to start asking the practical questions;* Speak to your venue to discover if there are any restrictions on suppliers. This will save you time and your planner will be able to tell you which suppliers work best for certain services. Most venues will offer you a list of preferred suppliers.* Is the wedding venue accessible? If not, are there many stairs to climb? * How close is the parking to the ceremony and reception rooms?* What’s the cancellation policy?* Is there a payment schedule? What size deposit is required? And are there any hidden costs? (Before you sign the contract, read it carefully.)* Is there a space for the bride and groom to change and/or relax? After fi nding the perfect venue, you and your new partner will want to spend some time, just enjoying that ‘wow’ factor after all.

Advice from local specialist Peter Orwell

JOINT PAIN is common and affects most of us at some point in our life. It can feel like an ache, tension or stiffness in any part of our body.

For some people, not knowing the exact cause of the pain can be frustrating. In most cases the cause may be a simple sprain (an over-stretch) of a ligament or muscle. In back pain the cause may be a minor problem with a disc or joint between two vertebrae. With a series of simple tests it is usually possible to diagnose the cause.

In some cases your pain may be due to poor structural alignment. For example, headaches, hip or knee pain may be caused by foot or ankle problems and vice versa. Furthermore, poor posture may lead to breathing and digestive problems. Your internal organs have limited space to function effectively and any change to their internal or external environment may lead to problems or pain, the effects could also occur elsewhere in your body, known as referred pain. Understanding and addressing the cause is essential in effectively treating pain.

As an osteopath I treat the symptoms and the cause of pain. Taking time to listen to you and understand your condition is important. This is done by taking a detailed case history that allows me to identify pre-disposing and maintaining factors, followed by a thorough medical examination. Osteopathy offers a safe, holistic and gentle approach to treatment and so is suitable for patients of all ages including expectant mothers and babies. Peter Orwell M.Ost, Registered Osteopath. Hard water leaves scum deposits in hair and on skin and is a factor in many skin conditions including Eczema. It also causes dry cracking skin and dull, lifeless and unmanageable hair.

Softened water can greatly improve certain skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and dry skin. Both skin and hair will feel softer and hair will be left shinier and more manageable.

HARD WATER EFFECTS

Water Softeners

SOFT WATER BENEFITS

Scale in your pipes and hot water cylinder will increase your heating costs considerably. Figures show that just 1/4’’ (6mm) of scale will increase your water heating costs by 50%.

Softened water will remove all the existing built up scale from your plumbing work and keep it that way, which leaves you to enjoy the saving on your heating bills.

SCALE

Hard water causes unsightly deposits of limescale on sink surfaces and taps. Extra cleaning time and harsh chemical cleaners are needed to remove it.

Benefits of scale free water are most obvious in the kitchen. Hard work and harsh cleaning products will be a thing of the past. A quick wipe over will leave your kitchen sparkling.

KITCHEN

Limescale causes scaling of heater elements in kettles, dishwashers and washing machines, resulting in expensive premature failure and shortened life of the appliance.

Any existing lime scale built up on your kitchen appliances can be removed for good with softened water. The elements in your kettle and dishwasher will shine like new.

APPLIANCES

Stubborn hard water marks around the bathroom, lime scale on the taps and blocked shower heads are just a few effects of hard water that make cleaning the bathroom very time consuming.

London and the South East is a hard water area. Fit a Twintec water softener and start feeling the difference all over.

Bathrooms with softened water will not need harsh cleaning products or scrubbing. They stay cleaner for longer and will shine. Of course bathing in softened water is luxury in itself too.

one. All in one plateful it tells you who you are and what you love. Ferrari’s has a happy family atmosphere at lunchtime and a bustling sophistication in the evening. The wines are traditional Italian but also there’s an extensive cocktail list. The cocktail of the day was a refreshing French Martini at the bargain price of only £6.50.

The food here is not going to disappoint you. Subash wouldn’t let it. You see him with his customers – sometimes he knows what they want before they do. Sometimes he wants to surprise them, but he always wants to make them happy. He looked at us out of the corner of his eye when we were eating our desserts. My panna cotta was whipped into a white fl uffi ness with summer red and blueberries on top. My companion’s tiramisu was a tapestry of contrasting textures and tastes, the crunchy with the fl uffy, the intense with the creamy – all at super value £5.20. Subash mirrored our delight. He wore a beatifi c smile of absolute pleasure that we were enjoying ourselves; luxury, quality Italian couture cooking offered with love.

To start with she had avocado and crab meat salad. The avocado was the perfect texture, chopped into a mound and topped with the sweet crabmeat (£6.50). I started with the king scallops in pancetta on pea puree. Each dish is presented by the staff as if they had exquisitely gift wrapped it themselves. You get care on a plate, all for £9.50.

The scallops themselves were juicy and slightly smoky from the ham, balanced off with the sweetness of the puree – Subash the maître d’ says that this is the most popular appetiser. The most popular pasta is the tagliatelle allo scoglio (£11.50), which is the traditional luxurious fat spaghetti with mixed shellfi sh, tomato and chilli. The menu is full of classics, often so hard to pull off because if misjudged they become boring clichés. Here is a gem of authenticity. The food has been cooked with love. I went on to be loved by ravioli with ricotta and spinach in wild mushroom cream sauce, which was rich and comforting and only £9.50. There are exquisite pizzas baked in a traditional pizza oven. The prices are not any higher than the Italian chains like Zizzi and Prezzo yet this is Italian cooking couture. I had just come back from fashion week in Milan where I ate at Dolce & Gabbana’s restaurant Gold and found the food at Ferrari’s on a par, as authentic and as beautifully tailored. Subash says that the chargrilled medallions of beef with spring spinach, creamed mash and black peppercorn sauce (£19.75) is the most loved entrée. Perhaps that’s because the medallions of beef love you back. If a dish can be a therapist it would be this

OUTSIDE THERE’S THE WHITE PICKET FENCES of English village life. Inside Ferrari’s there’s a little piece of authentic Italy. If you think of the essence of Italy as warmth, tradition, perfect pasta, the fi nest of simple ingredients and above all else passion, here in Ferrari’s there is that essence. You feel the love as soon as you enter. Maître d’ Subash wants to make you happy.

If you sit at the front of the restaurant it’s like sitting in a greenhouse – open and airy. At the back there are snug mini-booths and soft chic chandeliers. It’s all sage green wood with upholstery that is scarlet red and dove grey. On the walls are family photographs of the old country. There are two old ladies in their widow’s weeds outside their terraced house who seem to be knitting spaghetti. There’s families on picnics, glamorous 1920s cars and Sophia Loren and Cary Grant looking in love and in love with pasta. The restaurant itself is authentic in its atmosphere. You imagine the people from the photographs on the walls would have handed down their recipes for linguine alle vongole – pictured – fi ne pasta ribbons with clams measured in a perfect amount of garlic and chilli – the dish that my companion went for.

PATRIOTISM IS ON THE AGENDA over the next few months, with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympics. In the past we would have looked to our near neighbour France for their Champagne and sparkling wines to raise our glasses, now we need look no further than our own shores for a glass of good quality fi zz.

Sparkling wines using the traditional Champagne grapes of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier are leading the way for the English wine industry, and since 2005 plantings of these varieties have quadrupled to more than 550 hectares, with the market set to reach fi ve million bottles by 2015.

All along the south coast, especially on the Downs and Weald where our soils share a similar geology and chalk to that of Champagne, a number of people are exploring the potential of producing wine, and even French winegrowers such as Meonhill Wines Vineyard near Winchester are planting and producing wines here.

Sales of English wines are increasing not just because of patriotic fervour, but because of their high quality, and English sparkling wines are consistently beating other traditionally-made wines around the world including Champagne. Earlier this year, in a tasting held by wine industry experts, producers such as Camel Valley in Cornwall, Ridgeview and Nyetimber in East Sussex, Gusbourne and Chapel Down in Kent, Denbies in

Surrey were amongst more than 90 English vineyard representatives that excelled against big names from across the Channel. Demand is high for these wines now, with the down-side that they are sometimes being consumed too early. English wines are high in acidity and with sparkling wines this can be exaggerated. Yet our wine producers are achieving wines which have good fruit-ripeness and a fi ne mousse which is why they are highly acclaimed.

People often feel English wines should be cheaper than their European counterparts, however the levels of duty are the same and the Champagne process of achieving a secondary fermentation in a bottle and then removing the sediment, plus the subsequent ageing of the fi zz, makes it impossible to achieve without some cost. Prices generally range from around £15 - £30 with many in the low £20’s, but it’s worth supporting our home industries. Sainsbury’s has just introduced the Denbies Sparkling 2007, under their Taste the Difference label at £19.99, made from the traditional grapes, and full of that signature fresh, clean and red apple fruit character that is so uplifting.

English Wine Week runs from 2 – 10 June. This is where many UK vineyards hold special events and open days for the public. See www.englishwineproducers.com.

The Wine Pantry, at 1 Stoney Street in Borough Market has an excellent selection from the top vineyards, along with an Enomatic wine dispensing machine, which allows you to try a range of samples before you buy. More information is available on their website www.winepantry.co.uk, but my advice is buy the Camel Valley Pinot Noir 2010 at £31.00 and/or the Gusbourne Blanc de Blancs 2006 at £28.00.

Or come to the Conservatoire on Thursday 31 May at 7.30pm, where I will be hosting an English Sparkling wine tasting to toast the health of the Queen. To book, call 020 8852 0234. A great start to a week of celebrations. Hope to see you there.

THE HILL IN GREENWICH has made a name for itself with its simple yet inventive menu over the past year. The restaurant makes wonderful use of meat and fi sh in particular. For starters my friend had the king scallops with Serrano ham in a white wine sauce, while I had the squid salad with chorizo and chilli sauce. My seared squid worked brilliantly with the rich chorizo, and the chilli sauce gave the seafood a real tang. My friend’s scallops were cooked perfectly. For our main course we had the Tuscan pork with apple and potato mash, and the Medallones al Champignon - fi llet medallions of Argentinian beef with mushrooms and red wine sauce. My friend’s steak was tender and fl avoursome. It came in a rich sauce, perfect for the well-seasoned, hand-cut chips we had as a side. My pork came in a lighter, rosemary and red wine sauce, with pancetta to offset the pork. What really made it, though, was the apple-infused mash, garnished with a sprig of redcurrants. The fruit fl avours worked magnifi cently with the pork and pancetta, providing a zingy sharpness to the earthy meat. The bottle of Muga white Rioja we shared was fl avourful and refreshing; it perfectly rounded off an excellent meal. Joe Devine www.thehillgreenwich.com Our bill came to £84.25 plus a well-deserved tip.

THE SAFFRON CLUB, based in the heart of Blackheath Village is known for specialising in Nepalese and Indian cuisine. Being big fans of Indian food my boyfriend and I couldn’t wait to try their popular and well-reviewed specials.

We were noticed the moment we approached the front door, and a pleasant waiter politely enquired about our wellbeing and offered us a choice of table. We sat by the window and were instantly offered a wine list and a new Saffron Club specialty: cocktails. Despite it being a week night, we just couldn’t resist. And rightly so: my Mojito with fresh mint and raw cane sugar was perfectly balanced with just the perfect amout of fresh lime, Nick’s Margharita was made precisely according to his detailed instuctions as he likes it with an unusual ‘twist’.

Shortly after we fi nished our complementary poppadoms we were presented with our starters including Saag Aloo, which wasn’t available on the menu but was made especially for us after our waiter found out that it was our favourite.

The beautifully presented Tandoori lamb chops (pictured above) I ordered were perfectly tender and covered in a deliciously spiced, aromatic sauce. There was nothing but a sound of silence, as Nick tucked into his marinated half chicken cooked in the tandoor oven. The food was delicious. We fi nished our meal with a rich and almondy peshwari naan which left us completely satisfi ed, especially when it was followed by a cheeky little drink on the house to accompany the bill!Marta Siolkowskawww.thesaffronclub.co.uk. With a tip our bill came to slightly more than £70.

On 15th May the Queen will visit Bromley for the fi rst time since 1986 as part of her Jubilee celebrations. At the time of going to press Her Majesty’s itinerary wasn’t available, so we’ve co me up with some ideas for her day out in London’s largest borough.

It’s well known that the Queen doesn’t carry money, but if she does fancy splashing the cash, the best place to visit must surely be The Glades shopping centre. The retail destination of choice for much of south east London, the centre provides convenience and a wide choice for shoppers, with the full range of high-street stores alongside a selection of high-end retailers and boutiques.

After a trip to The Glades something more adventurous might be in order. Losing Herself in the labyrinthine Chislehurst Caves could provide some afternoon excitement for the royal party. The man-made tunnels were fi rst mentioned in historical annals around 1250 AD, and were originally chalk and fl int mines before being used in a variety of different ways over more recent times. They acted as a munitions depot in the First World War, as an air raid shelter in the second, and during the 1960s pop concerts were held there, featuring such luminaries as Jimi Hendrix. They have been a popular tourist attraction for over a century, and today there are hourly tours from Wednesday to Sunday, with seniors tickets just £3 each. The tours are family friendly and cater for groups, perfect for large families. The caves are famous for being haunted, but then so is Windsor Castle so I’m sure She wouldn’t be too spooked.

Once She’s done with the dark, there’s always the outdoors for Her Majesty to enjoy, if She has brought Her corgis with Her. She could take in the splendour of Sundridge Park Manor, and even play a few holes on the surrounding course. Or She could travel out a little further to the village of Downe on the borough’s Kentish outskirts; Bromley has had plenty of famous residents, from HG Wells to David Bowie, but the borough’s biggest celebrity must be Charles Darwin. One of history’s greatest minds lived for 40 years in the village at the confusingly named Down House. The building, containing an exhibition on his life’s work, is open to the public through the summer months and sits within beautifully-kept gardens.

After an afternoon wandering through the borough’s great outdoors, the Royal party could head back to Bromley town centre for some early evening refreshment and dinner. Restaurants like Ferrari’s on East Street, which serves modern Italian cuisine, offer a high-class dining experience. Newly opened International Goodfellas on Westmoreland Place is another excellent option.

With dinner polished off there’s time for some evening entertainment before the day is over. The Queen could perhaps take in an exhibition at the Ripley Arts Centre on Sundridge Avenue. The centre acts as a gallery space and also specialises in world cinema screenings. Alternatively, She could head over to the Churchill Theatre: Her eldest son opened the theatre in 1977 and it continues to put on a wide array of comedies, musicals and dramatic performances. Or perhaps, if She is in the mood for something a little more ‘low key’, the Bromley Little Theatre by Bromley North

station might be the place to go. This amateur theatre is run for and by its members, with a fully equipped auditorium putting on eleven productions a year, all produced and performed by people who do it just for the love.

At the end of all that, Her Majesty can rest in the car back to Windsor knowing She’s enjoyed the very best Bromley has to offer.

Crow is a major new produCtion inspired by Ted Hughes’ poetic creation, from Handspring Puppet Company UK, the sister company to Handspring Puppet Company South Africa. Mervyn Millar will direct Matthew Dunster’s adaptation with choreography from one of Britain’s rising stars in dance, Ben Duke. This much anticipated world premiere will be presented as part of the Greenwich+Docklands International Festival at The Borough Hall at Greenwich Dance, co-commissioned by the Royal Borough of Greenwich and the London 2012 Festival.

Mythic and elemental; Ted Hughes’ Crow is at once comic, bleak and beautiful, evoking a world at odds with itself. The central crow character is a scavenger, a collector, a scientist and an innocent, full of anarchic energy and violent comedy. With this irrepressible life, Hughes created a hungry chaos of feathers and dark dreams, a mythic everyman wondering how to fit into life.

Ted Hughes, British Poet Laureate from 1984 to 1998, is recognised as one of the 20th century’s greatest poets. Crow, published in 1970, is one of his darkest and most personal works, which he called ‘his masterpiece’. In it he shaped a language and form of volcanic intensity to capture what has been described as ‘the liveness

of nature and the crow-ness of the Crow’. Handspring combine ingenious puppet designs with the choreography of Place

Prize 2011 winner Ben Duke of Lost Dog dance company, to create a dance theatre performance of this extraordinary work. Handspring Puppet Company has been creating groundbreaking theatre with puppets for more than 30 years. Their critically acclaimed work with the National Theatre’s production of War Horse has been seen by millions and won many awards for the West End and Broadway productions.

Greenwich+Docklands International Festival (21 – 30 June www.festival.org) is London’s ambitious annual festival of outdoor arts and spectacle, which presents a programme of world-class performances over ten days each summer. Whilst until now all events have been free and outdoors, this year, GDIF sets out to break down walls between building based theatre and street arts and with Crow the visceral spirit of the outdoors will be brought inside a building for the first time.

the production is suitable for 14 years and over.thurs 21 june - 7pm, Fri 22 until sat 7 july - 8pm (no performances on sundays) matinees: sat 30 june, sat 7 july - 5pm. previews: mon 18 – wed 20 june -8pm. £18 / £15 (Conc. £15 / £12) all previews £10. The eyes of The world will be on Greenwich this summer following Jones Lang LaSalle’s balloon’s first visit to Royal Greenwich

Sunday, 22 April was the date on which the 2012 Virgin London Marathon was run and, Jones Lang LaSalle’s balloon was to be found sitting on the heath, next to the sponsor’s own. As an international property consultancy with offices across the world, the balloon made its first visit to the Royal Borough of Greenwich and endorsed the brand’s local residential offices in Blackheath, Greenwich and Canary Wharf.

This summer’s events will display the beautiful architect of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site, which includes London’s oldest Royal Park, host to the Equestrian and Modern Pentathlon events.

Ken Deamer, Jones Lang LaSalle’s national director based in Blackheath said: ‘Our lettings market is very strong at the moment, both for residential lettings and the London short-term premium sector. Demand for short-term lettings in London has increased significantly over the past five years from corporate tenants and holiday guests with many landlords turning to this market for a higher return. A short-term let is normally a tenancy between one week and three months with increased rental values of 60 per cent to 100 per cent.

‘For London 2012, we anticipated great interest in the short-term lettings market in Greenwich and Blackheath. This has proved correct and we have secured international bookings, as well as UK corporate lets. Our dedicated London 2012 website has received nearly 3,500 hits from 89 countries and territories across the world.

‘We hope the London short-term accommodation market will grow post 2012 and assist cultural tourism in our part of south east London.’If you would like to let your property through Jones lang lasalle’s local and international network of offices, then contact yasmin Gabr:Tel: 020 8858 9944.
