School Breaks Up Doug Cations & Jim Elvey
The million dollar makeover of Meredith Primary School
is at the messy end of the omelette. If you've passed the
site lately, and our photos show, it is very much a
demolition site, made worse by the heavy weather of late.
Amazingly, the school is still functioning around the
fenced off area. Students and teachers have retreated to the
Bluestone, a new portable and a small pocket of the old
"core" building.
You can imagine the strain this is placing on everyone -
it's like a large family losing access to over half their
house. But a brave face and a sense of adventure is
keeping everybody focused on the finished product - a
brand new school building which should be finished for
occupation by the start of term 2, 2011.

Stolen On Sunday night many items were stolen from the
Foxy‘s Concrete Garden Ornament shop. Would people please
be on the look out for a large Mexican statue and many other
fibreglass items. We would like to let people know to be aware
of this and to be careful. If you have any information regarding
this please call the local police on 52 861 222 K.Fox
Unhappy Seniors The Meredith Senior Citizens were very
upset and annoyed to find when they went to open their
cupboard at the hall on Monday 23rd August it had been broken
into (a hacksaw maybe?) Luckily for the vandals on counting
our items everything seems to be there. But repairs to the
cupboard will not be cheap and will eat into our meagre funds.
An anonymous donation for the use of items, would help.
If at any time you are looking for that extra item for a great
night at the Hall please contact the Meredith Seniors, ask for
details when booking the hall. - Hope Hodge

Meredith Community Centre News
We have had a good attendances in our classes
considering the cold rainy weather that has been
consistent over the winter. We are organizing our Spring
Term and invite suggestions from the community as well
as members who would like to offer a class or activity.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank Lu Jones,
our Childcare Director for her assistance over the past
couple of years. She has been instrumental in the success
we have had with our Childcare Service. We wish Lu
well and look forward to being able to replace Lu with
someone who is able to provide the same quality of care
that Lu was well-known for. It has been good to be able
to provide space for the school for their classes and
meetings while they are in the midst of building which
again shows the strong partnerships and community spirit
characteristic of our community! Please check out our
new website www.meredithcc.com.au for any news and
updates to our programme.

IT‘S TIME TO THINK
CRICKET.
The local football finals are well underway with many
teams already done and dusted. The sun is starting to
show promise of the warm weather to come: so it‘s time
to think cricket.
The Rams recruiting drive is beginning to reap rewards
with more than half a dozen new or past players
confirmed to bolster the playing ranks for the upcoming
season and there remain a couple more clearances in
limbo. The playing lists across all grades are looking
very strong for the 2010-11 season but there is always
room to accommodate anybody wishing to while away
the hours at the MCG on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Thank you to those who made their time available to
assist with the working bee on the nets. It was good to
catch up with so many cricketing mates while we are
still a few weeks out from the start of the new season
and their efforts made a big job manageable. The heavy
work has now been completed and we can prepare for
our first formal training session and Meet the Coach Day
on Sunday September the 12th at 10.00 am. Please note
this has been rescheduled from the 5th to avoid a clash
with Fathers‘ Day. We will have about five weeks to get
prepared for round one and Ty will outline his plans for
that period on the day.
On the social side there will be a couple of in club
functions prior to the first ball being bowled in anger but
the main event to keep in mind will be our second
annual Trivia Night. The date is yet to be finalized but it
will be a Saturday night in mid-October either the 16th
or the 23rd. Last year‘s function was an outstanding
success and this year‘s is expected to be bigger and
better. Start thinking about your tables of ten and brush
up on those obscure facts and musical oddities that may
just be the difference as we get set for another night of
fun and mayhem.
Anybody wanting to get in touch with the club regarding
anything cricket or for more details regarding the trivia
night, should jump onto our website where a list of club
contacts and details are available.

Golden Opportunity for Sporting Clubs Leisure Networks has secured two and a half years of project
funding from VicHealth to work with 100 sporting clubs in
the G21 region to support them in becoming healthy sporting
environments by meeting a number of minimum standards.
These standards include: responsible use of alcohol, healthy
eating, reduced tobacco use, protection from harmful effects
of UV, safe and respectful clubs particularly for women and
people from culturally diverse communities.
This project recognises the value and contributions sporting
clubs can make to provide safe, supportive, healthy and
inclusive environments. Sporting clubs bring together the
broader community and are a vehicle for positive messaging
and cultural change, creating healthy people and healthy
places.
There are lots of benefits for your club. Participating clubs
will be able to access $3500 incentive payments, and the
support of project officers who will provide training, resources
and ongoing contact through the life of the two-year project.
Leisure Networks in partnership with the Golden Plains Shire
will present a briefing session for clubs to learn about the
project and for clubs to obtain an Expression of Interest form
in order to take part The briefing session is at the Bannockburn
Family Services Centre on Tuesday 7th September—6.30pm
to 7.30pm. More info from Linda Connor on 5224 9932
Meredith & District Community
Emergency Response Team Andrea Rooney
Many thanks to all who attended the Annual General
Meeting of the Meredith and District Community
Emergency Response Team (Meredith CERT) on Tuesday
24th August 2010.
Mr. Sandy Kahn (Acting Group Manager) and Lynne
Reeve (Paramedic/CERT Trainer) represented Ambulance
Victoria (AV) at the meeting. Mr. Kahn, the guest
speaker, highlighted the important role that Victorian
Community Emergency Response Teams fulfill within the
AV organization.
The 2010/2011 elected Office Bearers and Committee are
as follows: President – Martin Peters, Secretary – Karen
Pritchard, Treasurer – Gerry Hurley, Public Officer –
Mick Rooney, Committee Members – Sandra Pearce,
David MacKay, Lynne Heard, Cathy Boer and Mary
Foster, Team Leader – Andrea Rooney and Deputy Team
Leader – Andrew Edmiston.
We continue to respond to on average, greater than one
incident per week, including traumatic injuries, cardiac
and respiratory conditions and a vast array of other
medical emergencies, providing vital initial management
of these conditions until paramedics arrive.
The 2009/10 CERT year saw the team fully funded by
AV, delivery of our purpose built vehicle, the training of
two further CERT members (we welcome David MacKay
and Mandy Trickett to our Team) and eight members
attend the Halls Gap CERT conference in October.
The amazing generosity of our local community – holding
fund raising events (including a fantastic cabaret in
March) and providing the CERT with donations, coupled
with the recent presentation of a $3300 Shire Grant, will
enable the CERT training facility to be erected over the
coming months. The final site and building plans for this
facility have now been submitted to Golden Plains Shire
for approval. Many thanks to the members,
committee, trainers of the Meredith and District
CERT and community supporters for their hard
work over the past year,.

Back to Steiglitz Festival
Sunday 24th October 2010
Springtime is approaching, nature is
preparing for change , the wildflowers
are appearing in the bush.
The kangaroos are with joeys, crops are growing , all in
anticipation for the new season. A time for flora and fauna
to celebrate and so it is time for a festival. The Back to
Steiglitz Festival.
The tiny township of Steiglitz celebrates its historic roots
and goldmining past with a fun family festival that aims
to reunite family and old fashioned traditions with fun and
affordability.
There will be the traditional billycart race, vintage
machinery, cars and motorbike displays, wine tasting in
Scotts hotel, horseshoeing demo, live music, local
produce, historic display, art display, Devonshire teas,
BBQ, goldpanning, and lots more.
So bring the kids and grandparents too, come and enjoy a
festival which celebrates a time not yet forgotten. Some
activities will require a gold coin donation. Funds raised
on the day will be used to restore and maintain the historic
buildings in the township.
Entry forms for billy cart race can be obtained through

Golf Handicapper Marg Cooper
Joyce Stanley started playing golf at Meredith in 1967.
It was a drought year and the ball ran a mile when you hit it and
you thought you could hit better than you really could.
Joyce had been married to Bill Stanley for 12 years, 2 of her
children were at school and Tony stayed with Grandmother
Stanley. Her mother, Mrs Eberhart of Elaine was a keen golfer
and played at Meredith and Buninyong.
When Joyce started Ess McKean was President, Nellie Tucker
was Captain, Doreen Dunsmuir was Secretary and Rita
Henderson was Treasurer and Handicapper. Other women
players included Jill Bolte, Kit Mooney, Lorna Wells, Betty
Scott, Mavis Parkinson, Betty Payne, E Concannon, Olive
Lloyd, Jean Stafford and Janet Cooke.
The clubhouse was a tin shed with a toilet out the back and a
bark floor. The tea leaves were always thrown on the floor.
At the Annual meeting in the early 1970‘s Janet Cooke was
elected President and Joyce was elected as Handicapper. Joyce
didn‘t want to be President!
Joyce played pennant in the Leigh Association for Meredith,
played at lots of Tournaments and Guest Days and got her
handicap down to 19 for about 12 months.
Joyce tells that she quite enjoyed the job of handicapper a job
she relinquished in 1983 after 24 years.
Joyce tells that her real love was running and while at school she
won many championships. The highlight was running at
Collingwood Football Ground in the Inter School Athletics
Competition.
Joyce was also a talented tennis player and moved like
lightening, darting around the net. She won Singles
Championships, Premierships and Country Week Titles
including the Chaplin Cup in 1952 & 1953 and A Reserve in
1973.
Joyce still plays 9 holes when it isn‘t too cold and often goes
down to have a cuppa on Tuesdays.
The photo is of the Mooney Cup Team that won the Chaplin Cup
in 1953 and Chris Mooney. Back: M. Le Maitre, H Le Maitre, C

Joyce was about 18 years old. Mooney Cup won the Chaplin Cup
in 1951, 1952 & 1953 and got to keep the cup. A great honour!

Meredith Structure Plan
Presentation of Draft Date: Wednesday 29th September 2010
Venue: Meredith Memorial Hall
61 Staughton Street, Meredith
Time: 6:30pm
In February 2010 Council conducted a workshop
with residents and representatives of the Meredith
Community to seek information and ideas regarding
the review of the Meredith Structure Plan.
A draft Structure Plan has now been prepared and
Council Officers will be presenting the plan on
Wednesday the 29th of September at 6:30pm. Copies
of the draft will be available on the night and com-
ments can be forwarded to Council up until October
29th 2010.
If you have any questions please contact Laura Wilks
on 5220 7111 at the Golden Plains Shire.
Big Plans for Meredith (from Meeting Report)
Meredith may see some significant developments in the
near future and Golden Plains Shire is keen to broaden
community input into the development of possible
projects. Following a round of meetings with
approximately 40 district residents earlier this year, the
Meredith Community Plan 2010 was created and
footpaths/walkways, youth infrastructure and a Bolte
Memorial were identified as key priorities.
A meeting of Community Coordinators and other
community members held last month to develop these
ideas heard the Meredith Music Festival is keen to further
its support of the Meredith community by matching
Council community planning seed funding dollar for
dollar. If approved, this would increase to $10,000 the
amount available for a priority project in the Community
Plan. Council is also keen to support the Community Plan
priority of a visitor / historical interpretive centre in the
town by submitting a proposal to Regional Development
Victoria. If a concept is approved by RDV, further
community-wide consultation will take place before
submission of a full application.
Community coordinators and other interested residents
developed a basic visitor centre concept including three
pavilions around the following key elements:
Section 1
Visitor information including tourism displays, maps,
brochures, environment, community and business
information
Economic Local Hub / Provincial Produce Centre – coffee,
wine, cheese, fine food, local produce etc. Current
Meredith businesses invited to be involved to ensure
no conflict with current business owners
Toilets
Section 2
Meredith History Centre
Multi-purpose room for historical displays, tourism,
meetings, etc.
Space for showcasing community info / display on a
rotating basis.
Section 3
Dedicated Henry Bolte display.
Outside Elements could add:
Low maintenance landscape – gum trees
Interpretive play space – small play equipment such as
animals to climb on etc.
Parking including Bus parking
Assessment of the concept may take up to 6 weeks with a
full application soon after. A decision could be made
between one and three 3 months after that.
This is an exciting prospect for the district community and
could do much to enhance the town for residents and
visitors alike. For more information contact Damian
Waight at Golden Plains Shire on 5220 7159.
The demolition will be almost complete by the end of
August. A large section of the basketball court will then be
removed for the foundations to be put in place. The staff
are currently looking at the various colour options and
external cladding that are aimed at complementing the
existing bluestone building and local environment. The
staff motto remains-―short term pain for long term gain!‖

that we appreciated her smile and
cheerfulness, her willingness to
help and her quick intellect.
She was born when the family lived
in Bell Post Hill, then they lived in
Corio until she was 12 years old
then moved to Anakie.
She tells that she spent a lot of time
in Meredith in her youth playing in a mixed netball team
and visiting their friends, the Hoad family.
She moved to Meredith to live when she was 18 years old
when she was doing a fitter and turner apprenticeship at
Alcoa in Geelong.
She boarded in a house in Sutherland Street that Scott
Hoad owned and then she bought the house from him.
In 1999 Kim‘s father bought the lease of the Pink House
and Kim and her mother Joanne ran the roadhouse until
2002.
They built the business up and were famous for the
Double J{JJ}hamburgers that sold for $4.50 and had 9
fillings.
Kim started working for Wayne O‘Sullivan in the Corner
Store in mid 2003, got married in October 2002, produced
Kenneth in 2003 and they worked away from Meredith
until August 2004 when they returned and Kim started
working for Wayne again.
She continued to work there when Gus Primmer and
Joanne Arthey bought the shop and she also worked at the
Royal Hotel and at the Race Courses in Werribee, Ballarat
and Bendigo.
In mid 2006 she left the shop work and cooked at Hearn‘s
Hotel but returned to the shop in 2007 and has been
employed there ever since, in the Post Office and shop
areas.
She tells that in a full shift of 9½ hours she averaged
25,000 steps.
She remembers the alarming fires at ―Morbrook‖ and
Hearn‘s house, the community support of the Bushfire
Appeal Fundraiser she and Karen initiated and being
Secretary of the Crocs Football for 4 years.
We look forward to the Primmer Christmas decorations
each year.
Kim has started a new job at the Red Door Café at
Inverleigh and hopes to have more time for herself and
Kenneth. She tells that she has thoroughly enjoyed
working in Meredith, loves the people and intends to
continue to live here.
Thankyou Kim for your devoted service to Meredith
for 11 years and good luck for your future.
Families must register to attend this event.

How One Soldier Got Settled (Based on Doug McFarlane’s address to the MHIG )
Doug gave an extensive history of the Soldier Settlement
Schemes after WWII and an interesting account of his family‘s
experiences on their block.
Within 30 kms of Meredith there were farms for service men
established at Ingliston, Beremboke, Moranghurk, Larundal,
Tall Tree, Golf Hill and Shelford.
Marj and Cliff McFarlane were offered a block on the Golf Hill
Estate in 1955 and were sent train tickets to get them from
Albury to Meredith and spend 2 nights in accommodation at
Young‘s Royal Hotel. They were taken to see their block by
Keith Pretlove, the Soldier Settlement Supervisor and they met
the other settlers on Golf Hill. They then had 6 months to
prepare, to pack and to get their family to the block.
Among other preparations, Doug‘s father made a wooden box
which he cut a hole in and that served as their first toilet
surrounded by hessian, fixed to 4 posts. Three truck loads
moved all the family which consisted of Doug and his sister
Helen, twins Elaine and Terry and parents Cliff and Marj
Looking east, north and south from the block not a tree could be
seen, only rocks and tussocks. They were left in this
unbelievable barren landscape, in tears. He thought that no-one,
not even a good worker like Cliff could create a viable farm
there.
They lived in the garage for nearly 12 months until the house
was built. The builders stayed in tents and Marj cooked meals
for them on a stove lent to them by Bob Stewart.
Cliff had to erect 2½ miles of boundary fencing. The settlers
helped each other and got paid a wage to erect fences etc.
Doug tells that there were 3 stages of ownership for the settlers.
1. Effective Occupation. (doing development work: fencing,
erecting sheep yards, etc).
2. Interim Lease. (establishing stock & plant to a viable income
level).
3. Purchase Lease. (after 3 years on this lease the property could
be sold).
A plan of the farm showing proposed internal fencing, dams and
infrastructure was required by the supervisor. Doug, aged 16
years, used his geometry skills, learnt at school to draw the plan
to scale. The supervisor was most impressed and told Cliff it
was the best plan submitted.
Flooding of Native Creek was a problem for the settlers on Tall
Tree Road ( formerly McFarlane's Road) until a culvert was
installed and officially opened by the Shire and local residents.
Doug tells that by the time of their first shearing the family had
moved into the house and they shore in the garage with a pen
outside.
They bought their first milking cow from Arthur Cooper of
Bamganie.
Marj and Cliff created a viable farm on their block on Tall Tree
Road and became very involved in the Meredith Community.
They sold the farm in 1979 and moved to Geelong.

Doug McFarlane spoke on Sunday, August 8 about the
Soldier Settlement Scheme and about his family coming to
their block on Tall Tree Road in 1956.(see story below)
A large crowd, including settlers, children of settlers and
Garry Pretlove, the son of the Soldier Settlement
Supervisor in Meredith, listened to Doug‘s well researched
talk. Thanks Doug for your research and for sharing the
story of your family at Tall Tree Road.
In November, Lyndsay Fink will be launching his book
about the history of Meredith. Lyndsay was always very
interested in the history of the district, has a huge
knowledge of the history and always kept notes and took
photos. His notes have been collected and collated into a
book which is just about to go to the printer. More details
of the launch will be advertised in later issues of the
newsletter.
MHIG received a Community Grant from the Golden
Plains Shire for a computer and software to catalogue the
history collection. At the cataloguing sessions on the last
Thursday of each month we have been cataloguing
manually onto paper and cards with pencils and rubbers.
Now we will also be able to catalogue using a program on
the computer which allows for quick and easy referencing.
Thanks to the Golden Plains Shire for this opportunity to
set up a first class system.
An invitation is extended to anyone who has spare time on
Thursday mornings, from 9 am to help catalogue at the
Masonic Centre. An invitation is also extended to anyone
able to donate items or copies of items or photos.

Golden Plains needs funds to support Bushfire Commission Recommendations
The Golden Plains Shire Council‘s
response to the 2009 Victorian Bushfires
Royal Commission was coordinated, along with 76 other
Victorian Councils, by the Municipal Association of Victoria
(MAV).
The Royal Commission Final Report includes 67
recommendations, a number of them directed at councils.
These include a proposed new and expanded role for councils
such as provision of community shelter options; local
emergency management planning for vulnerable people and
evacuation; monitoring of planning permit conditions;
identifying dangerous trees and enhanced roadside clearances
and broader consideration of land use planning issues and
bushfire risk.
The MAV submission emphasizes that many of the Final
Report recommendations can be delivered, but funding is
needed.
The Golden Plains Shire supports the MAV‘s response to the
Final Report and is genuinely committed to get on with the
tasks necessary to prepare for the upcoming fire season.
However costs of implementing recommendations are
prohibitive without funding support from other levels of
government.
Golden Plains Shire hopes to have some clear indication of the
State‘s proposed timelines, processes and proposals for the
accepted recommendations within the next fortnight. This
will provide council with immediate priorities for
implementation prior to the fire season.
History of “Advance Meredith” Marg Cooper
A public meeting was held at the Meredith Hall on 26/3/1997 to
present the Meredith Town Plan to the residents of Meredith.
David Madden and a representative of ―Scenic Spectrums‖
presented the plan for ―the future improvement of Meredith‖ and
the suggested priorities to be carried out over a three year
project.
The people sitting in the front row were elected to form a
working group to get the plan moving, before the end of the
financial year. The group called themselves ―The Town Team‖.
Diane Ritchie agreed to be Chairman, Jean Dunstan agreed to be
Secretary and June & Neil Cameron, Marg Cooper, Lyndsay
Fink, Kevin Parkinson, Max Heard, Gerald Dupe and Pat
Dodson formed the working group.
The Shire gave about $5,000 for the three years.
This money was used to erect welcoming signs at the entry to
Meredith, erect tree guards and plant trees in Wilson Street and
plant trees and shrubs in other streets of the town and produce
three town calendars in 1998, 1999 and 2000, etc.
The group have changed their name to ―Advance Meredith‖ but
continue to work and plan to improve Meredith and to make it a
nice place for people to live.
Over the years the group have organized functions such as
Pioneer Day on May 3, 1998, 10 years after the bi-centenary,
Meredith Heritage Walk Day on November 14, 2004 to
celebrate 150 years of settlement in Meredith, New Years Eve
Party in 2000 to celebrate the New Millenium, Australia Day
celebrations, Health & Wellness Expo in August 2006 and
Farmer‘s Markets starting in September 2002.
Town Team produced the Meredith Phone Book, a welcome to
Meredith kit for new residents, a business directory in May
1997, postcards and Meredith Heritage Walk book and
brochures, cards and the book of Alison Erwin‘s poetry.
Trees have been planted in Pioneer Park to honour Citizens of
the Year and daffodils have been planted around the town to
cheer us up in Spring.
For many years Jean Dunstan entered Meredith in the Tidy
Towns Competition and won awards in at least 3 presentations.
Meredith was recognized for its enthusiastic community.
Town Team have tried to brighten the town at Christmas with a
―Christmas Lights Competition‖ and the ―Christmas Sheep‖.
The group have held many working bees and with grants from
the Golden Plains Shire have done improvements in the town
including painting the public toilets, lights, seating, concrete in
the rotunda and have erected the new
―What‘s On In Meredith‖ sign.
―Advance Meredith‘ has obtained a Community Grant in 2010
to celebrate Christmas in Meredith with carols, sheep,
decorations and food. Put this in your diary!
This hardworking and enthusiastic group invites every interested
resident to join Advance Meredith to work towards advancing
your town and making it a town and community we all can be
proud to live in and also one which is welcoming to visitors and
new residents alike.

Election Night
Everyone knows politics isn‘t a wise topic of dinner
party conversation. When I was younger, I honestly
thought that was because it would bore people silly,
and no one wants to fall asleep at the table and topple
in to their soup. When I got old enough to become an
enthusiastic follower of Parliament Question Time, I
realised it had much more to do with the desire to get
through dinners without fork puncture wounds. Upset
guests, wasted food, blood on the table cloth – all
things considered, it‘s best to avoid the dreaded ‗P‘
word. So my decision to host a little dinner party on
election night was another ‗P‘ word. Puzzling.
It seemed like a great idea at first. I‘d provide the food,
the television would provide the entertainment...and
the guests would provide the fireworks. The instant the
invitations were out, the visions were dancing in my
head. The light hearted chatter would get a little
heated. The first insult would be hurled. Sweet chilli
Philly dip would spatter the walls. Friends would
storm out bitterly, never to return. Someone with too
many opinions (probably me) would be biffed squarely
in the nose. Everyone would vote that day, but not just
at the polling booth. They‘d vote to never visit me
again.
I did the grocery shopping with a heavy heart, but I
perked up a little when I realised just who I‘d invited.
A handful of students! They‘d be so tired from the
long trek to Meredith and so grateful for the free food
and cheap wine. We‘d laugh, we‘d watch infomercials,
and we‘d eat junk till everyone fell asleep on the floor.
I left the Philly at the supermarket though, just in case.
Of course, in the end it was all quite different. We
watched the election coverage on ABC, squinting at
the numbers on our little TV. We ate a very good
curry, the result of me standing in the kitchen for
several hours looking bewildered and clutching a
wooden spoon. We laughed, we shouted, we
cringed...and then we realised the results count had
become a little boring.
Once it became apparent the final
result might be days, perhaps weeks
away, we started to wish Rage would
start already. Before I fell asleep, I
asked for one final vote: was that the
greatest curry ever? Luckily for my
guests, the result was a unanimous
yes.

Elaine Mechanics Hall Memorable Musical Event Janice Donghi
On the 31st July the Elaine Mechanics Hall was the venue
for a memorable musical event. The MC for the evening
was the very talented Kym Ivory who did a fantastic job.
The event saw local talent like Peter Blacklock and
Michael Bysouth, a talented twosome. We listened to. two
young girls, Kate Gittings and Georgia Gilbertson. Both
girls voices a joy to behold. Heath Stenton and sax player
Brett Grace are local favourites and never fail to please
the crowd. The group of talented friends, Kym Ivory,
Bradley Harris, Lee-Ann Tong and on the keyboard Phil
Johnston each had their turn in the limelight with the
other 3 harmonising. What a treat for the very appreciative
audience. Janice Donghi was happy to do a couple of
country numbers but the highlight of the night was the
gorgeous and talented Natalie Gauci who just blew us
away. Natalie gave a magnetic live performance. This kind
of talent doesn't come to small towns too often and it was
a pity more locals didn't make the effort to come along.
Fundraising is always hard work in small communities but
this was a very special event and a treat for country
people who miss out most of the time because of travel
distances to just such events.
The Elaine Mechanics Hall has had a lot of work done to
the stage and hall and looked amazing on the night. A
special thanks to Maureen Diffey who arranged flowers
for singers and a beautiful arrangement for the stage. The
hall is a fantastic size for hired events so keep it in mind
for Weddings and family events in the future.
Next year the Hall will
celebrate it's 100yrs.
Locals and past locals
are encouraged to
contact Janice on

this huge event.

―Come in Spinner‖ by Dymphna Cusack & Florence
James.
This book is set during World War II and shows a side of the
war that is rarely told.
Most of the characters work in a beauty salon at the Hotel South
Pacific in wartime Sydney.
Florence James tells that they wrote the book to show the
problems of women on the home front during WWII and to tell
how it had thrown decent people off balance and how
exploitation had become the name of the game.
This book, the Sydney war story tells of the lives of the people
in the hotel and especially in the beauty salon over 8 days.
Dymphna and Florence set up temporary housekeeping in the
Blue Mountains during the last year of the war with 3 children.
But circumstances changed and temporary became more
permanent and the 2 women decided to collaborate and tell the
story of the women‘s world in Sydney where men‘s labour was
in short supply and women were man-powered. {Man-power
was where men and women were assigned important jobs for the
duration of the war.}
The authors charted the weather during the first week of October
1944, studied clothes suitable for their characters and began
writing.
Florence tells that before they knew it the characters began to
take charge of their own plots.
Many, many issues are involved in the book including, the
romantic entanglements, the love of a married man and
subsequent abortion, the wealth and attraction of American
soldiers, a young girl being befriended and forced into
prostitution, how the rich continued with their way of life
regardless of the war, the black market, parents discipline, horse
racing, gambling and two-up.
The book won an Australian-wide competition in 1948 but it
was nearly 3 years later, in January 1951 that ―Come in Spinner‖
became a winner in the bookshops.
Some journalists called it a muck-raking novel fit for the literary
dustbin and were not alone in wanting to keep the rackets and
the greed and the ugliness of wartime Sydney hidden beneath
the good-time surface.
This is an interesting and important novel and a good read!
It was made into a 2 part mini series for ABC Television.
The book for discussion in September is ―Out Stealing Horses‖
by Per Petterson.
Book Review
Marg’s Vale to Kathryn Lowes Briggs Marg Cooper
Kath Briggs was born on July 26, 1915
the daughter of Tom and Ann Randall
and sister of Ted and Dot.
She went to Cargerie State School
before going to Elaine State School,
when the family moved to live in Elaine
from Cargerie.
She played tennis at Elaine and loved
riding horses and competing at
gymkhanas in the area.
She attended Geelong Teachers College
and was welcomed to She Oaks State
School as the teacher in 1941.
Family tell that she travelled by train to
Meredith or Medina and rode her bike
to She Oaks. On Friday nights she rode her bike to Lethbridge
and travelled home to Elaine on the train.
She boarded with the Allan family during the week and when
they sold out she boarded with Tom and Grace East.
Some of her students were Jim Duggan, Wendy Miller
{Stanley}, Fay McFarlane {Cooke}, Lexie Stray {Boardman}
and Max Cooper. Jim says she was the best teacher he ever had!
She was farewelled at a surprise afternoon tea at the school in
April 1949 prior to her marriage to Harold Briggs.
Kathryn and Harold married at Christ Church Cathedral in
Ballarat on May 14, 1949. Harold was the younger son of
Alexander and Jane Briggs of 49 Staughton Street, Meredith and
brother to Olive Marjorie, Barbara and Lex.
Harold and Kath moved to live at Hick Street in Spotswood and
Harold spent many years at Western Suburbs Schools as a
teacher and Head Teacher.
Kath played tennis, sewed and made many of her own clothes,
did craft, was a valued member of her church, read, danced and
went on trips.
Harold retired as Head Teacher of Kingsville State School in
1977 with a teacher‘s farewell evening, a staff send off, a
presentation before an assembly of the school and a dinner
dance.
They moved to Morgan St, Sebastopol after Harold retired.
Harold and Kath loved to dance and in 1992 they made their
debut at Brown Hill. Kath was 77 years old.
Kath was a tall, neat woman who was always very well dressed.
She always remembered her nieces and nephews when they had
birthdays and at Christmas and kept all the details and dates in a
little black book.
Harold died in 1999.
Kath was a resident of Bannockburn Aged Care for the last
couple of years and celebrated her 95th birthday a few weeks
ago.
She died on August 13, 2010 and a Requiem Eucharist was held
at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Sebastopol on Tuesday,
August 17.

Winter Delivers
Although less than the long term average of 172mm, the
152mm of the last three months was an excellent follow up to
the good autumn falls. Rainfall over the last 12 months is now
over 96% of the LTA. The 85mm of last month was especially
good, although illustrates the variation in local rainfall patterns.
Ballarat received 158mm in August while Geelong only had
70mm.
