The one-story addition creates a new grand entrance for the Hormel Corporation. The addition is the first expansion of the building in 20 years. The 28,000 additional square feet will include a new reception area, cafeteria, wellness center with locker rooms, conference rooms, and an auditorium area that will seat 60 people.

Sustainable systems implemented in the project include the use of geothermal and ground source heat pumps, demand based ventilation, and a rainwater collection system used for irrigation and toilet systems.

The Hormel Institute is comprised of a group of highly successful medical scientists who are focused on determining the basic molecular mechanisms of cancer development to create new anti-cancer agents. Researchers are focused on finding better ways to prevent, detect and treat cancer to extend lives.

The three-story building addition to the existing Hormel Institute facility consists of 20 state of the art research labs, offices, and support spaces. The third floor houses a new 7,500 SF SPF animal vivarium.

The facility was designed to meet Minnesota’s SB2030 Energy Standards. A variety of energy savings and ventilation methods were incorporated into the HVAC systems that included:• A heat recovery chiller to satisfy simultaneous heating and

cooling loads.• High efficiency condensing boilers for low temperature

heating hot water.• Cascaded ventilation system and heat recovery.• Combination of fume hood and general lab exhaust airflows

allowing for energy recovery of all laboratory exhaust.• Demand based ventilation using occupancy sensors to

reduce airflows when spaces are unoccupied.• Reduction of lab air change rates using air quality

measurement devices. MEP provided the mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services.

The new 14,000 SF SPAM® Museum replaces the original SPAM® museum, which was located at Hormel Foods headquarters and temporarily closed in September 2014. The museum features interactive exhibits and galleries looking at Spam's popularity around the globe, Spam's history with the US military, and Spam today. It also features a set of bluegrass instruments made of Spam cans, a 12-foot Spam rocket, a Spam can conveyor suspended from the ceiling, and a Spam children's play area. Along with a 1,400 SF SPAM gift shop which offers hundreds of Spam-branded items and gifts..

MEP provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and lighting (LED). Challenges on the project included coordination with a company specializing in the design of museums for the display and exhibit power and temperature requirements.

CRAYCHILLER PLANT DESIGNCHIPPEWA FALLS, WI

MEP was engaged to perform a master plan study to determine the optimal solution for creating increased chiller plant capacity, while at the same time determining how best to interconnect multiple chiller plants. All the tasks MEP needed to perform came with the requirement to reduce energy consumption and peak demand. At the time MEP was engaged to perform the master plan, the facility utilized stand-alone water-cooled chiller plants to serve dedicated supercomputer testing bays. The test bay cooling load was at times exceeding the capacity of the associated chiller plant.

MEP analyzed how to integrate a new chiller plant to the existing two chiller plants and how this could be a phased approach to implement a solution that would provide redundancy so that any chiller plant could operate at a given time to provide the base load needed for the campus. A water-cooled economizer system was included in the new chiller plant to handle 100% of the cooling load. The design included a space for a 1,000-Tons of future expansion.

The cooling load requirement is predominantly from the heat gain of computer equipment that is currently being tested in the adjoining labs. The facility currently needs the chilled water to be delivered at 47°F degrees. The facility made use of free cooling as much as possible. MEP designed a system that used the plate and frame heat exchangers to supply up to 100% free cooling, and staged the chillers to interject mechanically cooled water to maintain the 47°F degree requirement. The water from the cooling tower is cycled into a below-grade sump pit.

Depending on load requirements and ambient conditions, the chilled water will all be delivered to the heat exchangers and/or be diverted allowing the 85°F degree water tower low water temperature to creep up.

The new chiller plant consisted of:• (1) 1,500-Ton cooling tower• (1) 600-Ton water cooled chiller• (1) 530-Ton water cooled chiller• (1) 320-Ton water cooled chiller• (2) plate and frame heat exchangers

for the water economizer

CENTRAL WISCONSIN ELECTRIC COOPERATIVENEW HEADQUARTERS AND WAREHOUSE FACILITY ROSHOLT, WISCONSIN

MEP Associates provided professional engineering design services for the Central Wisconsin Electric Cooperative located in Rosholt, WI. The facility includes a 16,473 SF office area, 4,374 SF vehicle repair area, a 21,012 SF vehicle storage area and a 6,750 SF warehouse.

MEP included a significant amount of site utility, site lighting and new plumbing and electrical services. All buildings were provided with an emergency generator that provides power to the entire building in the event of power outage. All HVAC systems are geothermal.

Schumacher Dairy expanded their dairy operation with the addition of a new Milking Parlor. The automated milking equipment delivered a continuous flow of raw milk at 98º F. The flow would vary from 40 to 80 GPM and is required to be chilled down to 38º F and placed in a bulk storage tank to awaited transfer to a truck for delivery to the processing plant.

MEP designed a heat pump system that repurposed the heat from the milk accomplish the following tasks:• Heat the cattle entry apron reducing the icing and cattle injury

during freezing weather.• Heat the wash down and cow’s drinking water in the Parlor.• Heat the administration building.

There are supplemental boilers which provide redundancy and heating during periods of extended low milk production. The system dramatically reduced the consumption of propane required by the operation.

GLENWOOD COMMONS NEW APARTMENT & STUDENT HOUSING FACILITY RICE LAKE, WISCONSIN

The 32,250 SF, twenty-four unit, 96 private bedroom apartment facility is a privately held housing complex designed to primarily meet the needs of students attending either the UW Barron Campus or the WITC Rice lake Campus. Each unit consists of four private bedrooms, compartmentalized bathroom, kitchen, and living area. The three floor elevator building includes an office and meeting area at the building entrance, a study/meeting area on each floor, coin operated laundry room, and a 72 space parking lot.

With the many sustainable features incorporated into the overall project design and unit amenities needed for efficient and functional Student Housing. In addition to using sustainable building products, the design also incorporated energy efficient technologies to reduce the use of natural resources. The windows, lighting fixtures, water heaters and appliances are all energy star rated, with featuring water conserving plumbing fixtures. The combination of all these has resulted in the building qualifying for substantial rebates from Focus on Energy.

MEP Associates corporate office located in Eau Claire, WI was upgraded from a traditional HVAC system to a 30-Ton water-to-water geothermal heat pump.

In November of 2010 the doors opened at Cascade Meadow Wetlands & Environmental Science Center. The facility featured a water-to -water heat pump system utilizing the pond as an energy sink. This system is the primary source of heating and cooling for the entire facility. From the onset, the owner experienced numerous operational issues and failures resulting in escalated maintenance and energy costs. The system was unreliable and required regular intervention to achieve adequate environmental conditions in the building. Cascade Meadow worked with the originally designed system for three years.

MEP Associates was commissioned to study the operation and provide recommendations and a course of action to address the issues. MEP provided design services for the required modification to the system configuration and controls allowing the water to water heat pumps to operate as required. Following the modification, the required system stability and energy performance was realized.

After system modifications, the energy consumption for the building dropped 30% on an annual basis.
