Mentoring is the transmission of
knowledge.
Mentoring is the transmission of
wisdom.
“A huge part of mentoring involves the effective transfer of
truth
from one generation to the next.”
Regi Campbellauthor of “Mentor Like
Jesus”
Mentoring can be formal or
informal.
If formal, clear objectives should be set.
In mentoring
intentionality
makes a difference.
Mentoring is about relationship.
Trust must be established and maintained, or the relationship will not be healthy.
A mentor
can have more than 1 protégé.
A protégé
can have more than 1
mentor.
Group mentoring
One mentor…several protégés.Meeting together, at the same time.
Constellation mentoring
One protégé…several mentors. Not meeting together at the same time.
"Every Timothy needs a Paul;
Every Ruth needs a Naomi."
Pastor Aaron Williams Mt. Zion Baptist Church
A mentor…
…is like a sculptor.
A mentor can initiate the relationship.
Or…
A mentee can initiate the relationship.
Mentoring is about listening.
“Understanding is the ultimate goal of a good listener and a good mentor.
If I understand you, then I might be able to help you.”
Regi Campbell
Mentoring is personal.
"The greatest good you can do for another is not just to share your riches… …but to reveal to him his own."
Benjamin Disrael
You have to mentor the whole person…
…not just a future manager – not just a position or a job title.
Having a mentor,
or being a mentor will…
1. distinguish you2. increase your skill set3. help you make connections
Coachability…
…is a desired trait in junior employees.
Leadership…
…is a desired trait in senior employees.
Selflessness“Authentic mentoring, mentoring like Jesus did,
involves selflessness. It says, ‘I’m going to give to you…put you first…let you learn from my
mistakes, and get nothing in return.’ In a sense the mentor says, ‘I’ve paid the price (via my
mistakes) to learn what I’ve learned. I’m going to give you the benefit of that price so you won’t
have to pay it.’”
Regi Campbell, p.28
Connectedness“As a mentor you have the opportunity to create
environments that destroy the walls of isolation for men.”
Richard Chancy
Hand-picked“The idea of being selected in a tryout was always a great feeling…it is a feeling of value, a feeling of
election, selected by one that in your eyes is greater than you.”
J.D.
With End in MindRegi Campbell has applicants for his mentoring
program write an obituary. This follows the principle of Steven Covey’s 7 Habit of Highly
Successful People: Begin with the end in mind.
With End in Mind
“I try to eliminate the candidates who seem to have the most mature, well-balanced view of their future. They have less need to be mentored. I try to pick the least mature, most needy future leaders because they are the people I may be able to help the most.”
Regi Campbell
Mentors…
…help us look forward (to the future) and
backward (at our accomplishments).
"A lot of people have gone further than they thought they could…
…because someone else thought they
could."

Oh I wish I could make it. I'll be traveling on the 28th. Thanks for the offer. I never told you but I got a job with Sewanee! I'm an assistant track and cross country coach. I also got asked to teach a running class. Anyway, I believe that the mentoring class helped me a lot with networking and really helped me think about what I truly wanted to do. I can't thank you enough.
Hope things are going well
