Men’s & Women’s Retreats

Scheduled for Fall 2012

“Fountains of Living Water

for Thirsting Catholics”

Women’s Retreat

With summer just beginning, it takes a stretch to think about our October

12-14 retreat weekend at Notre Dame Retreat House on Canandaigua Lake,

but now is the time to put the date on your calendar. If you have been on

retreat with us in the past, you know what a wonderful weekend it is. If you

have never been to the Notre Dame Retreat House, you don’t know what

you’re missing. It is a special time to get away from the tasks, the

surroundings and trappings of everyday life that keep us so busy that we

forget to carve out that time for growing in our faith and spending quality

time sharing with Our Lord.

The suggested cost is $130 for a single room and $100 ea. for a

shared room. For this you will enjoy two comfortable nights, four delicious

meals, inspirational and thought provoking talks, liturgies and devotions, a

flexible schedule and if desired, a private meeting with one of the staff.

The retreat begins with registration from 7-8 pm Friday and closes Sunday

at noon after Mass. To reserve a room or for more information call: Mary

Gardner at 227-0691 or Donna LaDuca at 342-3234

Men’s Retreat

Please join the men of St. Charles on our annual retreat at Notre Dame

Retreat House, Friday evening through Sunday noon, September 28—30.

Now is a good time to mark your calendar and make a reservation. The

deadline for reservations is September 23.

You'll enjoy a retreat. It offers you a time to refresh yourself. A

RETREAT gets you away from the daily grind and distractions of our

modern living. It offers you a welcome physical rest, release from

tensions, mental peace - and above all SPIRITUAL REFRESHMENT.

The conferences at the retreat are:

Fountain of Trust by Fr. Paul

Fountain of the Cross by Fr. Tom

Fountain of Forgiveness by Sr. Carole

Fountain of Hope by Fr. Mike

In addition to the retreat conferences you will enjoy friendly conversation

with fellow retreatants, beautiful surroundings and great meals.

If you would like to register or would just like more information, with

no obligation, please call Ed Holden at 621-8243 or by e-mail at

[email protected]. Please leave a message if I am not home.

You can also look at the Notre Dame Retreat House web site

(www.ndretreat.org) for pictures and more information on this great

facility. Rides to the retreat can easily be arranged.

$317.00 went to Angles of Mercy (Dress

a Girl Around the World). Notre Dame

Learning Center will be will be this

weekend’s Parish Sharing recipient.

Fr. Tom Brown is an Oblates of Mary Immaculate priest who

grew up in the Rochester area. For most of his 50+ years in

the priesthood, he has served as a missionary in Brazil. In

the early 80's he ministered to our community of St. Charles

for a short time. Periodically, he returns to Rochester for a

visit, including St. Charles in his stops (but not this year).

We have supported his ministry through our parish

sharing ever since the program began. Thus far, we have

given him over $6,000 this way. Next weekend we will

again donate to the Ministry of Fr. Tom Brown.

NOTE: $317.00 went to Greece Ecumenical Food

Shelf for the week of July 1, 2012.

Kindergarten - Mickey Eckert &

Kailey Vickers-Gelo

The Kindergarten is off to a great start! We have practiced

the Sign of the Cross and learned some simple prayers of

thanksgiving. We are also learning the Our Father.

Our lessons this week have been focused around the

wonderful world God has made for us. He made the day,

night, land, water, plants, animals, and people! We thank God for our feelings,

our senses, our friends, our families, and ourselves.

A highlight of the Kindergarten week was leading the Summer Camp in

morning prayer on Friday. Everyone enjoyed our interpretation of the Creation

story!

Kindergarten—Morgan Munley & Erin Mulcahy

This past week in Summer Camp we

learned about all of God’s wonderful

creations, such as the stars, moon, clouds

and sun as well as animals and you & me.

We enjoyed making crowns as well as

reading many stories from the Bible. Our

favorite part of the week was sharing the

story of God’s creation in a prayer for the

whole Summer Camp.

1st grade - Barb Gerardi & Michael Schwartz

Everyone is born with an invisible bucket. We are learn-

ing ways of kindness to keep it filled with happiness. We

belong to a loving family and church community. Photos

taken around Church will prepare them for our visit. Us-

ing dolls we will play Baptism as we learn. Bible stories

such as the Serman on the Mount, Jesus and Simon

catching fish on the Sea of Galilee. Using real fish to

paint and make prints and touch to learn.

2nd grade - Patty Borden &

Deanna Smiroldo

This week we enjoyed getting to know each

other! We acted out Baptism and the Good

Samaritan. We have chosen saints as our

heroes and learned about

the Ten Commandments.

Every day we pray together

and hear a story from the

Bible.

3rd grade - Karen Hummel & Lauren Speer

We are remembering our prayers, learning about Jesus’ disciples and

followers. We are also learning about Christ’s healing powers and

forgiveness.

3rd grade - Christine Deutsch, Erica Lanzillo & Morgan O’Leary

The third graders traveled around the world in search of discovering how the

Church is ONE. St. Paul teaches us how to spread the word of Jesus. St.

Martin teaches us how to care for others.

1st grade - Peggy Morris , Amanda Bly

& Liam O’Leary

We had a great start. We all got to know one

another. We are learning that we are part of

one family – God’s! Also, we gather to pray in

our Parish Church and the Bible is the written

Word of God that teaches us how to love God

and others. We will continue to learn about

the goodness of God.

2nd grade - Jillian DiPonzio &Maggie Munley

We are off to a great start! This week we learned about

how to be a hero simply by following in Jesus’ footsteps.

We look forward to another great week!

4th Grade– Maggie Coleman &Christina Gaudio

We are learning how to find things in the Bible and going over the

commandments in our lives.

St. Charles Borromeo Church Rochester, New York July 15, 2012 Page Five

4th grade - Gerianne Stawarski &

Sharon Bigham

Working both individually and in teams, we talked

about God's goodness, as well as some of the ways

that we can honor Him through prayer and by taking

care of His creations (e.g. recycle, reduce,

reuse). There were many discussions on the 10

Commandments, and how to

make the best choices in

order to be good Catholic

role models, and live our

lives in God’s grace. Great

students!

6th Grade—Donna Schwartz &

Megan Termine

This week we have been going back in time with our

ancestors in faith by learning how to look up passages in

the Bible as well as learning about Abraham & Sarah,

Joseph & the coat of many colors, and Moses. This is a

very large class and we are excited to get to know and

share our faith with your children!

7th grade—Heather Brown & Ryan Mulcahy

We are studying the life of Jesus—from birth

to resurrection. We made prayer envelopes

and are writing prayers for people in our lives

and placed them in the envelope.

8th grade - Mary Fran Yockel & Brian Hummel

This year we are learning about the History of our Church. We

are learning the 4 marks of our Faith: one, holy, apostolic, and

Catholic. We are also learning how we as laity can say YES in

our own Church community and parish.

Music—Alyssa Blodgett & Julie Eckert

We talked about songs involving the word “time”

and worked on different songs to sing for next Fri-

day’s prayer service. We also played musical

games and talked about how we make time for God

in our own lives.

Snack - Elaine Weiser & Jason Hunt

Snack time is always popular. Many thanks to

the children for always being so polite!

Art - Diane Heath, Meghan Wille & Katie Wille

We’re off to a busy start for Art at Summer Camp. Kindergarten is

making life-sized drawings of themselves and glitter crosses. Primary

grades (1-4) have made “clocks” with lists of when they have time for

God. 5

th

graders are making foil drawings in embroidery hoops by

picking and image using tooth picks. 6

th

graders are making 3-D

crosses out of form board, packaging tape and tissue paper. 7

th

& 8

th

graders are creating beads out of sculpey clay to use on necklaces or

rosaries.

5th grade - Kathy Stewart, Regina Coon, 5th Grade—Kathy Keyes &

& Daniel Geisler Meghan Keyes

We are God’s GREATEST creation! We

learned we are made in God’s image and

likeness. We studied the Beatitudes, the

Old and New Testament. We made signs

for the Food Drive (next week)

as we learned the corporal

works of mercy. We talked

about the Sacramentals and the

Sacraments of Baptism and

Confirmation. We learned how

to pray with Holy Scripture.

Art—Heather Halligan, Catherine Raleigh &

Alyssa Szyszkowski

I am very happy to be here and enjoy working with all of

the children and Mrs. Heath

We’ve spent some time getting to know

each other and we are a great group of

motivated young Catholics! We are learn-

ing more about what Jesus taught us. We

are practicing living the Beati-

tudes and we’re learning

more and more about the 7

Sacraments

6th Grade—Michael Flaherty &Brittany Viele

We are learning about our Hebrew ancestors in the Old

Testament. We are also learning about how to navigate the Bible.

Check out the Lighthouse Catholic

Media kiosks and literature racks (4

locations) at the back of church.

Although there is a suggested

donation, fundraising is not the reason that these items

are available. They are there to help us grow in our

understanding and exercise of our faith. Also, they are

to pass on as an evangelization tool for others.

John Paul II and the New Evangelization is a

book in which 22 authors address this issue. Fr.

Robert Barron, creator of the Catholicism series that

has been shown at St. Charles, has a CD talk on

Reaching Out to Today's Culture (Answering the Four

YouTube Heresies). These are just two of dozens of

offerings that we have for your edification!

NOTE: Check out the St. Charles website for more

opportunities to purchase CDs and Books from

Lighthouse on the Parish Webstore. More information

to come next week.

Are You Thinking

About the Catholic

Faith?

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults and

Children is a process designed by the Church for

adults and older children to receive the sacrament of

Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. The

goals are to give a complete overview of Catholic

teachings and to begin to deepen a Christian spiritual

life centered in the Sunday Scripture readings. The

sacraments are received at the Easter Vigil Mass.

Are you:

• a person who has not been baptized and would like

to learn more about the Catholic faith with the

possibility of becoming Catholic?

• a baptized Christian of another denomination who

would like to learn more about and possibly join the

Catholic church?

• a baptized Roman Catholic who has never received

Eucharist or Confirmation and would like to

complete their sacraments?

• a child over the age of 7 who has never been

baptized or has been baptized in another Christian

faith or has been baptized Catholic and has never

received Catholic instruction.

RCIA & RCIC offers an environment of support and

guidance as you discover how God is working in your

life. Is this process for you? Do you have a friend or

neighbor who may be interested? For more

information, contact Sr. Miriam at 663-3230 x104.
