In a rematch of last year’s Sectional Final, the Duhawks face off against Trinity University Friday night at 7:30 p.m. The Tigers enter boasting a 23-1 overall record and went 14-0 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC). Johnny Lawson leads the Tigers with 17 goals and eight assists for a Trinity side that has scored 82 goals this season, an average of 3.42 per game. Lawson, who now has 96 points (40G-16A) in his career, will draw the attention of Loras’ marking backs when kickoff rolls around on Friday. Right behind Lawson on the leaderboard is Victor Araujo, who enters with 27 points (9G-9A). The Salvador, Brazil native has torched opposing defenses throughout his career as he has 77 points (26G-25A) in three seasons. In goal, San Antonio native Matt Cardone is in his senior season and will be looking for revenge against the team that ended his junior season. Cardone enters with 29 career shutouts and has only allowed 37 goals in 80 career games. PREVIEWING THE THUNDER ... On the upper half of the four-team bracket is the hosts of the weekend, Wheaton College. The Thunder enter the weekend with a 19-3 overall record and winners of the Collegiate Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Regular Season and Conference Tournament Championships. Noah Anthony leads the team in assists with eight. The Wheaton offense averages 2.73 goals per game while averaging less than one goal given up per game. A 2-2 start to their season didn’t keep Wheaton down on their luck, as they turned it around going 16-1 in their next 17 games. Only a midseason slip up to Carthage College on October 15 prevented the Thunder from running the table in the CCIW. PREVIEWING THE KNIGHTS ... Loras is joined in the sectional round with a familiar face for the second consecutive year, as the Knights advanced past MSOE on PK’s and defeated Chicago 2-0. Wartburg enters with a 13-3-6 record, finishing second in the Iowa Conference but claimed the IIAC Tournament title by edging Loras in PK’s, 5-4. Dan Nadeau leads all Wartburg field players with 34 points (12G-10A). Shortly behind him is Paris Martins with 20 points (7G-6A). TIGERS AND DUHAWKS MEET FOR SECOND TIME ...Friday’s Sectional Semifinal pits Loras and Trinity against eachother for just the second time in program history. In last year’s meeting, the Tigers went ahead in the 10th minute on a goal by Tom Carwile.

Loras came out charging in the second half, scoring in the 51st and 58th minutes to grab the 2-1 advantage, earning themselves their fourth trip to the Final Four in program history.

POSTSEASON ROAD GAMES AN ODDITY ...For the first time since 2010, Loras will be playing a NCAA Tournament game on the road. From 2011 to 2014, Loras has gone 10-1 in the Rock Bowl in the postseason.

That 2010 season saw Loras defeat Greenville in the first round before moving past Wash.-St. Louis on PK’s in the second round. The Duhawks’ run came to an end that season in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, when Loras fell 2-0 to UW-Oshkosh.

PIZZELLO LIGHTING THE LAMP ...The offensive eruption from senior Mike Pizzello has been a pleasant surprise for the Duhawks this season. In his previous two seasons on varsity, Pizzello registered five goals and four assists. To date, Pizzello has 14 goals and one assist, marking the first Duhawk to tally double digit goals since 2010, when Miguel Bonilla finished with 10 goals and seven assists. In 2009, Bonilla finished with 19 goals and six assists, leading Loras to an appearance in the “Sweet 16”.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH - MATT PUCCI

LORAS MEN’S SOCCER

Matt Pucci is now in his fifth season with the Duhawk coaching staff. He is now the Associate Head Coach alongside Dan Rothert. Since joining the Duhawks coaching staff in 2010, the men’s teams have won three regular season conference titles, four conference tournament titles and have made four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, nine overall since 2005. On top of that, the men’s teams have also made a NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2010 and back-to-back NCAA Final Four appearances in 2012 and 2013.

Pucci was a four-year member of the Loras varsity team from 2004-2007. During that time he helped the Duhawks to two Iowa Conference regular season championships, two Iowa Conference tournament championships, three NCAA tournament teams including the Duhawks first NCAA Appearance in 2005, and was a captain during Loras’ first apperance in the NCAA Final Four in 2007 as the Duhawks went undefeated at 23-0-2, finishing No. 2 in the country.

As a player, Pucci’s honors include being named to the NSCAA All-Region 1st Team, D3soccer.com All-Region 1st Team as well as All-Conference 1st Team while putting together the fourth best offensive season in program history his senior year, by scoring a league-high 17 goals and is currently ranked in the top ten for career goals as well.

Pucci’s coaching career began during his time on the Duhawks roster with the boy’s high school teams at Hempstead and Wahlert. While the Head Varsity Coach with the Golden Eagles in 2008, the team won the IHSAA 1A State Championship and he was named the Mississippi Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Upon concluding his time in Dubuque, Pucci spent two seasons with Misericordia University in Dallas, Penn. The Cougars qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of those two seasons, winning the Freedom Conference twice.

Pucci earned his bachelor’s degree from Loras College in public relations in 2008 and followed with his master’s in management from Misericordia University in May of 2010. His professional coaching licenses include both the National Diploma and Advanced National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).

Originally from Libertyville, Illinois, Pucci now resides in Dubuque, Iowa with his wife, Carrye, and their daughter, Nora.

Former Loras College soccer standout, Dan Rothert has been at the helm of the Duhawk men’s and women’s soccer programs since 1998. In 16 seasons, Rothert’s teams are regarded as some of the best in the country. This past season, both the men and women won the IIAC regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the NCAA Tournament where the men advanced to the national semifinals and the women to the 2nd round. The men’s team finished 19-2-3 and with a final national ranking of No. 3; while the women finished 18-4-1 and a final national ranking of No. 23.

His men’s teams have won the Iowa Conference championship eight times and advanced to the NCAA tournament eight consecutive seasons where they have had very successful runs at the national level-advancing to the Sweet 16 in 2005, 2009 and 2010 and the Final Four in 2007, 2008, 2012, and 2013. The women’s teams have won the Iowa Conference nine times and the IIAC Tournament 11 times with 11 NCAA appearances which were highlighted by runs to the Sweet 16 in 2003, 2010 and 2012.
