YEAR-BY-YEAR MEET RESULTSThis section includes results of non-conference meets with the exception of the Keatinge Invitationalswhich may be found later in this section. Win-loss records for each season are confined to results ofmeets with five or less teams competing.

It should be noted that the non-conference meet segment of Maine’s annual cross-country schedule haschanged significantly over the years. Prior to 1949, Maine’s annual schedule normally was composed ofone or two dual meets and the remaining races were conference championship races. The segment ofthe schedule devoted to pre-championship races in 1949 was lengthened to give the team moreextensive competition leading up to the conference meets. And, as in the past, virtually all of these raceswere either dual, triangular, or occasionally, quadrangular competitions.

A dramatic change occured in Maine’s pre-championship schedule, starting in 1993. At that point,Division One institutions within the NCAA framework created new scheduling criteria in cross country, aswell as in other sports, which decreed that virtually all races were to be conducted against other Division One institutions with a minimum number of teams to be faced each season. This all but eliminated racesagainst teams from Divisions Two and Three, as well as Canadian colleges. Large multi-team fieldsduring the pre-championship segment of the schedule replaced the traditional pattern of dual, triangular and quadrangular fields in order for teams to comply with the new standards.

Listed in this section are scores of all dual, triangular and quadrangular meets, and Maine’s place of finishin meets involving five or more teams. There were no non-conference meets in 1914, 1921, 1922, 1929,and 1945, and the program was suspended in 1917, 18, 43, and 44.

1927 — BEGINNING OF A DYNASTY

For three seasons, 1927–28–29, Maine’s cross country teams included two of the finest distance runners in the nation in Harry Richardson (fifth fromright), and Francis Lindsay (far right). They were co-New England champions in all three seasons. At the national championship meet, Lindsay was second and Richardson fourth both in 1927 and 1928. In 1929, they crossed the finish line hand-in-hand to gain recognition as co-national champions. As a team, Maine won the New England championship in 1927 and 1928 and placed second in 1929. At the national meet, the Black Bears were third in1927 and second in 1928. The above photo is of the 1927 team. Left to right: Victor MacNaughton, George Ramsdell, Steve Mank, Bob Chandler, Clyde Stinson, Lee Wescott, Worth Noyes, John Stanley, Harry Richardson, Gilbert Austin, Al Benson, Mgr. Hugh Lloyd, and Francis Lindsay. Absent:Capt. Andre Cushing and Coach Frank Kanaly.

I.C.A.A.A.A. The Intercollegiate Amateur Athletic Association of America, more commonly referred to as the IC4A, hasbeen conducting a cross country championship race each year for nearly a century. Until the NCAAestablished a national championship race after World War II, the IC4A event was regarded as the nation’smost prestigious event and winning teams and individuals were regarded as national champions. TheUniversity of Maine was elected to membership in 1915. Maine’s greatest successes came in its firstyear of membership, when it won the team title and again in 1962. In 1929, Harry Richardson and Francis Lindsay broke the tape hand-in-hand and were headlined as national champions. Maine’sparticipation in recent years has been pretty much eliminated due to scheduling conflicts. Top Maineteam finishes, as well as the names of Maine runners who finished among the top 50, are as follows:

YANKEE CONFERENCE One of the highlight events in Maine’s schedule between 1948 and 1979 was the Yankee Conference Championship Meet. Competing teams represented New England’s six state universities and, during partof the 1970s, Boston University. Holy Cross also was a league member during two seasons in the early1970s. The final race was held in 1979. Team scores are shown here.

MURRAY KEATINGE INVITATIONALThe Murray Keatinge Invitational, held annually in Orono since 1992, was created as the result of the generosity of the late Mr. Keatinge, a Camden resident with a strong interest in cross country. This eventhas attracted many of the nation’s top teams and provides Maine runners with perhaps the strongestcompetition of the season. Following are team scores of each race, as well as the names of Mainerunners who have placed among the top 25 finishers.

A REMARKABLE CAREER ENDS IN GLORY

Don Smith, captain of the 1939 Black Bears, earned even more recognition than some of the famous UM runners who preceded him. He is the only UMrunner to win the New England individual cross country title four times. The Boston Globe described him as the greatest runner in New England history in its coverage of the 1939 championship meet after Smith crossed the finish line first for the fourth time. He also was one of the elite runners nationally, finishing fourth twice, third once, and sixth once in the national title meet during his years on campus. Posing for the 1939 team photo were, left to right:Mgr. Carl Newhall, John Jordan, Ken Blaisdell, Mark Ingraham, Coach Chester Jenkins, Don Smith, Howard Ehrlenbach, Dale Butterworth, John Dequine, and Faculty Manager of Athletics Ted Curtis.

NEW ENGLAND AND NATIONAL CHAMPIONS

Maine’s 1939 Freshman cross country team reached the highest level of achievement when it won both the New England and national championshipevents for freshman teams. Five UM runners placed among the top 11 in the national meet, led by Dwight Moody, sixth; John Creamer, seventh; Phil Hamm, ninth; Dick Martinez, tenth; and Art Farris, eleventh. Moody, Hamm, Martinez, Creamer and Leo Estabrook were third, fourth, sixth, eighth, andeleventh, respectively, in the New England championship race. Front row, left to right: Faculty Manager of Athletics Ted Curtis, Dwight Moody, Phil Hamm,Art Farris, Stan Frost, John Creamer, Dick Martinez, Leo Estabrook, and Coach Chester Jenkins. NEW ENGLAND, IC4A CHAMPIONSHIPS New England and IC4A Cross Country Championship Meets were held for freshman collegiate runnersduring the several decades when freshmen were ineligible for varsity teams. Maine produced at least two national (IC4A) champions, William Hunnewell in 1935 and Malcolm Dempsey in 1942, and five NewEngland champions in Harry Richardson (1926), William Hunnewell (1933), George Sawyer (1935), DonSmith (1936), and Paul Hanson (1952). Additionally, in 1939, Maine captured both the New England andIC4A team titles. Locating best performances by UM runners was difficult in some seasons. Thoseuncovered are listed here.

2006 — A SUCCESSFUL SEASON

Capt. Kirby Davis climaxed his outstanding running career at Maine by winning his second consecutive America East individual title and led the BlackBears to a third place finish in the team standings. Front row, left to right: Miles Bartlett, Eric Newman, Kirby Davis, Michael Dabrieo, David Englehutt and Will Fulford. Back row, left to right: Chris Harmon, Donald Drake, Joshua Trevino, Jon McGonagle, Travis Vicary, David Manz, Scott Batson and Coach Mark Lech.

1955 NEW ENGLAND AND YANKEE CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

Maine had several outstanding teams during the mid-1950s, led by one of the best distance runners in University history in Paul Firlotte. His senior season, 1955, was especially remarkable as he won the New England individual title and was Yankee Conference champion for the third straight year. He had the good fortune of having several teammates who also were exceptional distance runners, including Dan Rearick, Stan Furrow, Dick Law, and Paul Hanson who finished third, fourth, seventh and tenth, respectively, in the ’55 Yankee Conference race. Maine lost only one dual meet during Firlotte’s three seasons as a varsity runner. Members of the 1955 team were, seated, left to right: Coach Chester Jenkins, Harry Folster, Phil Emery, Co-Capts. Stan Furrow and Paul Firlotte, Joel Stinson and Dan Rearick. Back row, left to right: Everett Cowett, Dick Dillenbeck,Karl Kraske, Dick Law, Dave Gould, John Lane and Dave Williams.
