Upcoming Events

Men and Osteoporosis (from www.osteoporosis.ca/osteoporosis-and-you/men-and-osteoporosis/)

Osteoporosis is not just a woman’s disease. It is also a serious health issue for men.

During their lifetime, at least one in five men and one in three women will suffer a broken bone from osteoporosis. Approximately 30,000 hip fractures occur in Canada each year, and over one quarter of these occur in men. That’s more than 7,000!

Proportionately more men than women die as a result of a hip fracture - 37% of men who suffer a hip fracture will die within the year following that fractured hip. Men are also more likely than women to require care in a long-term facility after a hip fracture.

Yet despite the fact that hip fractures can be more devastating for men than for women, men are less likely to be assessed for osteoporosis or to receive treatment for osteoporosis after they break a bone.

To help raise public awareness that men get osteoporosis too, our annual fall forum will address this very important topic.

Bones and Beer This fall we will be holding our first-ever ‘Bones and Beer’ fundraiser. It will be a casual evening for men to gather and enjoy great ribs, craft beer and other refreshments, and special guests and activities to make the evening fun yet informative. We hope that you will help us meet our objective of raising awareness that men get osteoporosis too, and of raising funds to support our many educational activities.

Details for the fall forum and our Bones and Beer event will be posted in the fall edition of this newsletter.

A penny saved... Wondering what to do with all those pesky ‘leftover’ pennies? We can help! Just bring them to the Manitoba Chapter office and we will be pleased to accept them, rolled or not. Funds raised will go toward repairing our outdoor signage. We’ll need about $700, so every cent will help!

Pharmacy Q&A

Osteoporosis Medications

Q: What is their role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis? A: For individuals with osteoporosis, there is now a variety of drug treatments available. Their primary aim is to reduce fractures.

How our bones work Bone is a living tissue that is constantly renewed through a process in which old bone is removed and replaced by new bone. Cells called osteoclasts erode the bone, creating small cavities; bone-forming cells called osteoblasts then fill in the cavities with new bone. This is nature’s way of restoring bones and keeping them healthy.

In younger people with healthy bones, the osteoclasts and osteoblasts work together, maintaining healthy bones. However, after our mid-30s the process is not as efficient, and we begin to gradually lose bone. In someone with osteoporosis, bone loss occurs more rapidly, causing the bones to become thinner and weaker over time. If you have osteoporosis, you have already lost a significant amount of bone and may continue to do so unless you receive medication.

Finding the medication that’s right for you You and your physician need to review the drug treatment options, assessing the risks and benefits each offers and choosing the best treatment for you, based on current scientific evidence. You may also need to explore several treatment options, because each person is different. Some people respond better to one drug than another. Some people have side effects on one and not another. (Any side effects should be reported to your doctor immediately.)

Cost may also be a factor. Provincial drug plans may cover certain drugs only for certain patients. Remember, treatment plans can be changed. The important thing is to find a drug treatment that works for you.

Calcium and Vitamin D No matter what drug therapy you choose, remember that a diet rich in calcium and vitamin D (and protein) is required to maintain healthy bones.

About Osteoporosis

COPN: Celebrating Our 10th Anniversary In 2004 four friends who were determined to overcome the challenges of living with osteoporosis met around a dining room table to initiate the patient arm of Osteoporosis Canada. The purpose of this founding group was driven by the belief that people living with osteoporosis needed a strong voice to provide the perspective of patients in all areas including medical matters, research initiatives, communication, public relations and education. Founding members, spokespersons and OC volunteers Sheila Brien, Priscilla Cole, Ina Ilse, and Gail Lemieux were encouraged and assisted by Osteoporosis Canada to establish a mandate for a patient network. Ten years later, COPN has a Canadian membership from coast to coast of some 7,000 individuals affected by osteoporosis. If you’re not already a member, connect with COPN by signing up for your FREE membership online today: www.osteoporosis.ca/osteoporosis-and-you/copn/join-copn/ or download the membership form: www.osteoporosis.ca/multimedia/COPN/COPN_Membership_Form.PDF

Treatment for Men with Osteoporosis

(from: www.osteoporosis.ca/osteoporosis-and-you/men-and-osteoporosis/treatment-for-men-with-osteoporosis/)

All men who have been assessed for osteoporosis and found to be at a high risk of fracture require medication. Drugs called bisphosphonates are the first-line treatment for these individuals. These drugs help prevent fractures. For more information, please visit the Drug Treatments section of this website: www.osteoporosis.ca/osteoporosis-and-you/drug-treatments/
