From the Desk of Paul Craven It’s nice to have August and September behind us from a heat and
rain perspective! Golf Course Superintendent Greg Tharp was
telling me we have had the better part of two feet of rain over the
preceding two months! A far cry from the times earlier this year
when we were experiencing record low levels in our ponds around the golf course and neighborhood! It’s impacted some of our
activities, especially regarding tennis and golf; but we did manage
to get our Golf Club Championships completed. Congratulations
to our men’s and ladies champions Gary Blackwell and Deb
Caruso as well as our first senior Ladies Champion Kathy
Danberg! With the quality of golfers we have at the Club all
should be very proud of their accomplishments. Next stop, the
Men’s Golf Member-Guest!
As is often mentioned in this newsletter, the key to the Club’s success is its membership – both
quality and quantity! We accomplished both earlier this month when we had a number of members
from The Plantation at Ponte Vedra Beach join the Club as their golf course embarks upon a major
year-long renovation. Having met a number of these incoming members, I have been so impressed
with both the caliber of these individuals and the universal feedback I have received about how
thrilled and excited they are to be here and how warm and welcoming the members and staff have
been to them. This is indeed a special Club.
We continue our efforts to expand our membership within the neighborhood. Recently you received
a letter from the Club’s Board of Governors highlighting the value the Club brings to the
Jacksonville Golf and Country Club neighborhood. We are following up with more communication
that we hope will entice both non-members and former members to consider joining or rejoining the Club. We also hosted a prospective Member Open House at the end of September for a large group
of interested candidates. These activities, along with our open invitation to any of you who feel you
have a great candidate for membership to contact our Membership Director Laura Bowman for a
tour, puts us in a great place as we enter the last quarter of the year.
To date we are ahead of last year’s membership count and our overall budget. We are forecasting to
be at these levels or better by year-end. Additionally, the board continues to develop plans in
response to the strategic planning survey that will be presented to the membership before year-end.
We’re excited about two new team members on the Club staff. If you’ve dined at the Club recently,
you may have met our new Dining Room Manager Matt Stalvey. Matt is a terrific addition to the
Club and will focus on member dining satisfaction and service quality. We are also excited to
introduce Mark Worsham as our new Head Tennis Professional. Mark built a tremendous reputation
during his time at the Florida Yacht Club, especially with developing an elite junior program, and
we hope to see that continue here. Please join me in welcoming both Matt and Mark to your Club!
With Fall right around the corner and a full calendar of great events and (hopefully) cooler weather,
there’s no better time to get out and enjoy your Club!
See you around the Club!
Paul Craven

Golfing Achievements
Holes-In-One: 9/5 - ACES x 3! – Caryn Kasik started the party by making her “1” on the 12th hole. She shot from
135 yards using her favorite 9-wood “Miss Louise” finding the cup on a back pin location. She must have been quite inspired as she birdied the next hole #13. Pat Cassidy then minutes later made his
“1” on the same hole using his 5-wood from 164 yards. Caryn & Pat both recorded their first holes-in
-one! Later in the day Dave O’Farrell made a “1” with his afternoon group on the third hole using an
8-iron from 150 yards. He too must have been inspired to finish off a great round of 89.
Congratulations to all three … 3 is truly a charm! (pictures to the right)
Personal Best Rounds: 9/10 - David Truax accomplished a very admirable first time feat in golf. He posted a score equal to
his age of 77. He played the Silver Markers and recorded 2 birdies on #3 & #5 on his way to a great round. Congratulations!
Eagles: 8/21 - Jeff Pearce recorded a fine eagle “2” on his card on the very tough hole #5. His shot came
after a well struck 9-iron. Congrats and good skin!
9/16 - Alejandro Pernett recorded a very fine eagle “3” on the long par 5 14th hole. His shot of 130
yards using a 9-iron came during Men’s Open Play. Congratulations!
~ Daylight Savings Time Ends - This is a reminder that we are definitely in store for some cooler weather and shorter days. Roll your clocks/
watches BACK one-hour Saturday night, October 31st. Sunday, November 1st marks the beginning of short days and Fall Golf.

February 2016, the hours move to 7am-5:30pm.
~ Men’s E-9 moves up to 5pm for the month of October with the Final Men’s Emergency 9 on Wednesday, October 14th. This will be a dual

~ Men’s MEMBER-GUEST - Wednesday, October 14th-Saturday, October 17th: Open play golf is available Wednesday, Thursday afternoon and Sunday. The course is reserved for the tournament on Thursday until 1pm through Saturday. Sunday is a scheduled rain date if
necessary. Should anyone have a request to play golf at another venue Thursday-Saturday, please contact the Golf Shop by calling 223-6910 or
email [email protected] and allow the Professional Staff to assist you.
9-Hole Ladies Updates: Opening Day, Thursday Sept. 10th, was a lot of fun! Adam has been giving us
mini clinics before we tee off each Thursday in September. Come out and learn along with us. He taught some important putting concepts and how to read the
greens last week. Get here at 8:45am to warm-up and be a part of it all. One day each month is dedicated to a fun ‘game’ where cash prizes will be given out! Adam will be playing 9-holes with us this month of October. And remember, rain or shine we
meet at the club for lunch each Thursday at 11:30am!
Come join our group!! Call Barbara Larkin, Debra Langdon, or Shannon Stanley for more information on joining the 9-hole ladies group!
“PATRIOT DAY WEEKEND” A very special THANK YOU goes out to all JGCC Members that contributed to our Patriot Day fundraising for the “Folds of Honor.”

in raising the highest amount of money. We appreciate your contributions to such a great cause.
