SUMMER 2017

What’s been happening?

This issue of the newsletter includes recent community activity and information from our

Annual General Meeting.

Vale: Judith Cross

Judith Cross passed away recently. She was a long term Sunshine FM-er having been around since

the very earliest days of the Station and served for some time as Secretary and as a news reader.

Station history has it that Judith’s husband, Philip Ward, and Graham Webb started the station in

Graham’s garage at Ninderry. Judith was a life member of the Association.

Thanks to a grant from the Buderim Foundation, Sunshine FM has purchased and installed a

profanity delay unit to help us with our outside broadcasts and studio interviews. The Station

intends to increase the number of outside broadcasts during next year to promote itself, local

businesses and organisation.

Recent Promotional Activities:

Glen Jeavons and Cam Young broadcast from the Sundale Palmwoods’ Garden Expo.

On the 28th October, the Station conducted an outside broadcast using upgraded equipment for the

first time. The event took place at Sundale Palmwoods’ Garden Expo to raise awareness of the

sponsor’s villas. Cam Young and Glen Jeavons went to air at 9.00am until noon with only a couple of

technical glitches during the morning. Along with Sunshine FM’s presence, there were garden and

food displays and competitions held on the day. From all perspectives the event was a success with

Sunshine FM ironing out the bugs for future occasions and the sponsor who was thrilled with the

number of people attending.

Sunshine FM Radio Association, Inc., business

The Sunshine FM Radio Association Annual General Meeting was held at the Craft Cottage, Buderim

on the 30th September 2017.

Appointed or elected was the new Management Committee consisting of: President - Paul Warren;

Vice President - Gary Fletcher; Treasurer - Charles Godfrey; Secretary - Diane Herd; Committee

Members - Peter Roan, Michael Shapter and Jules Verity.

Since the AGM, Paul Warren has resigned as President and Michael Shapter will serve as Acting

President until a replace is found.

The Program Committee is: Sonia Baldissera, Steven Centofanti, Cameron Young, David Corben,

Nettie Knox, and Terry Schroder.

Extracts from the PRESIDENT’S ANNUAL REPORT 2016-17 It is my pleasure to present this annual report on behalf of the Management Committee. Sunshine FM has enjoyed another very successful year, both in terms of service to our community and financially. Our efforts over the past year have built on the solid foundations laid by successive management teams, staff and volunteers over the past 17 years. It has been very satisfying to be nominated for the Community Organisation of the Year at the Sunshine Coast Australia Day Awards and, for the second year in a row, for the Excellence in Digital Media category of the CBAA Awards. Our Presenters The station has continued to reach out to our community in our broadcast licence area through the excellent work performed by our on-air presenters. They are our face to the listening audience and feedback via surveys (especially via our website, Facebook and our new App) indicate that we are providing what our listeners want – more music, more memories, more often. Our three professional presenters are doing a fantastic job during peak times and they are supported extremely well by our 20 volunteer presenters who are the heart of our community radio station. We welcome all the new presenters who have joined us throughout the past year. In addition to our regular music, specialty programs continue to prove extremely popular with our community. These shows provide listeners with alternative music to our regular playlist and interesting interviews with musicians and other celebrities. The specialty programs include two Country music shows, a Rock show, Soul & Blues show and the very popular Gardening Show. The regular local traffic and fishing reports and theatre and music events also provide our listeners with updates of what is happening on the coast. We thank all our presenters for their major contribution to our mission. Community Service Announcements Community Service Announcements continue to provide free on-air promotions for not-for-profit organisations on the Sunshine Coast. In calendar year 2016 two hundred and seventy-two (272) different organisations benefited from over 20 000 announcements made during the year.

Page 5: MEMBERS NEWSLETTER - SunshineFM1049sunshinefm.weebly.com/uploads/7/1/5/4/71546213/newsletter_10... · MEMBERS’ NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2017 What’s been happening? This issue of the

Organisations that benefited from this major contribution to our community included Sunshine Coast branch of Arthritis Queensland Support Group, Cansurvive, Melanoma Patients Australia (MPA), St Vincent de Paul Opportunity Shop, the WoodWorks museum near Gympie, Caloundra Senior Citizens Club, Sunshine Coast branch of the Leukaemia Foundation, Nambour National Seniors Club, Lions Club, Rotary Clubs, University of the Third Age and many more not-for-profit groups. Many thanks to the CSA team led by Nettie Knox and CSA readers Wendy Mead, Phil Moroney, Rita Walker and readers new to the station during last year, Greg Wuth, Jennifer Bottrell, Dee Zaranis and Beth Ives-Noble who returns to the station after an absence of several years – welcome back Beth. Outside Events During 2016/17 we were represented at some 42 events around the Sunshine Coast – 34 community and 8 sponsored events. Our presence took the form of our signed marquee, station car & van and promotional team led by Ellie Seeley – often accompanied by our Account Managers Sharon Reid and John Edwards and Station Manager Greg McCosker. This exposure is raising our profile and enables us to distribute marketing material and sell labelled merchandise to the public. We can expect to see this effort step up another level over the next 12 months with the introduction of our new outside broadcast unit and improved signage on our van. Thank you, Ellie and everyone who’s helped her to raise awareness of our station around the Sunshine Coast. Online Development of our online presence via our website, Facebook and the online App continued apace during the year. Our online presence via the App has opened up a new world of possibilities for our listeners and has also started to generate revenue. We are hopeful of seeing a substantial increase in these new revenue streams in the coming year. I encourage every member who owns a smart phone to download the app from the App Store or Google Play Store and familiarise yourself with the features available. We are now reaching out via the website and App “listen live” to a new audience around the world and we are confident we will see continued growth in this new market in the months and years ahead. Our primary focus is of course our local community however of the many worldwide listeners, several are originally from the Sunshine Coast and like to keep up to date with news from the coast. We have been nominated for the second year in a row in the CBAA Awards for Excellence in Digital Media category and the winner will be announced at the annual CBAA conference on the Gold Coast in November. Congratulations and thanks to Station Manager Greg, volunteers Michael Shapter and Gary Fletcher and App developer John Brown for their commitment to enhancing our digital capabilities. We intend to continue to broaden the social media horizons, providing it is of benefit to the station and our community. ACMA Directive During March 2017 we received a final communication from ACMA advising that Sunshine FM had met all the directions of ACMA, subject to filing quarterly reports until our current licence expires in December 2017. This advice ends a difficult period in our station’s history and our grateful thanks go to Jim Hales for his masterly leadership through this period. Licence Renewal Our licence renewal application was completed in early December and forwarded to the relevant authority. The Station was notified in late January that the application was successful and the licence will be renewed for another 5 years when the current period expires in December 2017. Our thanks go to Station Manager Greg and volunteer Michael Shapter for the great work involved in putting together this comprehensive submission.

Business Plan Aligned to the licence renewal, but separate from it, a 5-year Business Plan (2017-2021) has also been completed. The Station Manager and Management Committee are now in the process of implementing this plan. Finance Treasurer Charles Godfrey has completed his first year as our Treasurer and I congratulate him on producing an excellent financial report which has been audited by Love and Partners. It is very pleasing to note that our sponsorship revenue is up again this year (12.1%) to $539k after a substantial increase the previous year. Total expenses also rose (5%), mainly due to increased staff payments and APRA royalties (due to our increased sponsorship income). Nonetheless, it is very pleasing to see a significant lift in our net profit to $16k, taking our cash reserves to more than $100k. Station Manager Greg and Account Managers Sharon Reid and John Edwards are to be congratulated on this excellent result which has been achieved through their hard work and because they have such a wonderful product to sell. This is a great testament to the dedication and professionalism of everyone involved in the operation of the station. During the year, Charles initiated the transfer of our accounting system from MYOB on a laptop to Xero online. This move greatly enhances the visibility of our financial records as well as providing very robust backup facilities for this important information. Congratulations are due to Treasurer Charles and his loyal and highly competent assistants, Kath Tegg and new member Marie Milne, in managing our accounting systems accurately and on time. Deductible Gift Recipient Status Last March we held a special general meeting to approve the changes to our constitution required to allow us to apply for “Deductible Gift Recipient” status. We subsequently submitted our formal DGR application to the Ministry of Arts, and through them the Australian Tax Office. We are hopeful of receiving approval by the end of this calendar year. Once approval has been received we will be able to issue tax deductible receipts to donors to the station and it’s expected that this change to our status will result in a significant increase in our support from the community. Audit, Risk and Finance Subcommittee During the year, the Management Committee re-labeled the “Business Subcommittee” the “Audit, Risk and Finance Subcommittee”. This title more accurately reflects the role of this important governance body who met four times during the year. My thanks to Chairman Charles Godfrey, Secretary Kath Tegg and member Ian Wright for their work in monitoring the operations of the station and alerting the Management Committee to areas of risk. Infrastructure Our growth as a station in recent years has resulted in commensurate growth in our staff numbers. This trend is continuing and we are now starting to feel the effects of the limited space we have available in our building. The Management Committee has started a process of discovery to determine the viable options available to us to increase our floor space. They include renting more space where we are through to moving to a new site, hopefully within line of sight of Bald Knob where our transmitter is located. Various financial and logistical factors will be evaluated with the ultimate objective of ensuring we operate in a facility that meets current and future requirements, but obviously within the financial limitations that we have as a community radio station. We are hopeful that public sector and other sources of finance may help us acquire such a facility in the medium term.

Program Committee The Program Committee is tasked with evaluating proposals against our objectives while maintaining regard for the requirements of the Station’s licence. The Committee received 5 new program proposals during the year of which 4 were declined and 1 accepted. With the departure of Maatikiri Te Ruki the opportunity was taken by the Program Committee and the Station Manager to introduce an Australian music program into the Sunday evening program, thereby ensuring we continue to meet our obligation under the ACMA licence conditions to broadcast a minimum 25% Australian music over the long term. Many thanks to the members of the Program Committee, your work is central to the success of this station – Chairman: Cam Young, Secretary: Nettie Knox and members: David Corben, Sonia Baldissera, Steve Centofanti, Terry Schroder. Maatakiri te Ruki also served on the committee until she left the Sunshine Coast. Technical Of course, we wouldn’t be able to meet the needs of our listeners without the expertise and dedication of our production and technical team. During the year we recruited two new production staff members, Reece Anderson and Steve Centofanti. I found it more than a little interesting to observe the sense of relief and excitement evident in our Station Manager as these two new staff members settled into their tasks and displayed their obvious technical skill which, together with our Content Director Bob Stuart’s experience, has lifted production quality even higher than it already was. Significant progress was made during the year to improve the quality of our equipment resulting in improvements in on-air quality and sustainability. Major items of equipment purchased during the year included a new UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) for Studio A, NAS (Network Attached Storage) and a RDS (Radio Data System) box plus additional computers, monitors and essential software. The RDS has been a wonderful innovation for the station allowing the display of artist and track title on modern motor vehicle screens and digital radios. Membership As at 30 June 2017 membership of Sunshine FM Radio Association totalled 106 members and 8 life members – an increase of 15 over last year. In addition, we had 50 subscribers on our books, individuals and community organisations who are acknowledged on our website. I wish to personally acknowledge our life members, all of whom have made extraordinary contributions to our station in the past 17 years: Roland Knott, Graham Webb, Ray Sheldrick, Ray Johnson, Ken O’Flaherty, Phillip Hustler, Gary Roydhouse, and Annetta Knox On a special note, I’d like to acknowledge Judith Cross, a life member, who we recently discovered sadly passed away five months ago. Secretary Rhonda has contacted Judith’s partner Philip Ward who, along with Graham Webb, started the station in Graham’s garage at Ninderry. Judith became a news presenter and later married Philip. Social During the year, we held several social events for our hard-working staff and volunteers. Our traditional Christmas function was a great success and 20 or so members enjoyed a casual game of bowls at Coolum Bowls Club in June. We also held a couple of Friday afternoon social sessions at the station. My grateful thanks to Secretary Rhonda and her team who arranged these functions for our enjoyment and I would like to see more of these types of social events next year. Personnel During the year, some of our valuable members retired from the station and we thank them for their valuable service to our station. They included:

Des Deighton – long-time presenter and passionate Sunshine FM champion left the station at the end of 2016 to an appointment as principal with School of the Air, but it’s great to hear that Des may be rejoining the station in some capacity in early 2018.

Graham White – we were sad to lose Graham to retirement after several years as traffic/sponsorship supervisor

Maatakiri Te Ruki – served the station well as Program Committee member and presenter for over 12 months.

Volunteers Jill and Peter Cutting, Peter Fox, Wendy Ashley-Cooper, John Cornish, Fraser MacDonald, Ryan Richardson, Ian Robertson, Dee Zaranis, Mary Lazdins and Chiho Kagawa who all spent time at the station.

It’s pleasing though to see that so many volunteers have joined the station during the past year and are already making a significant contribution to the efficient operation of the station in a range of important roles – welcome all and I hope you enjoy your time with us. Two extraordinary members have decided to stand down from their duties and have not re-nominated for office:

Jim Hales – former President, Vice President and Secretary has decided to call it a day. We thank you Jim for your dedicated service to this station. Many will be aware that Jim bore the brunt of the burden of ensuring that the station complied fully with ACMA’s directives while at the same time keeping our people focused on our mission. Despite that difficult period, Jim maintained his composure and has allowed us to grow and prosper ever since. We thank you Jim for your remarkable service to this station over the past five years.

Rhonda Cundall – Secretary and servant of the station for the past seven years has decided to “take a break”. Rhonda’s input to the station has been amazing and, on a personal note, I am most grateful for Rhonda’s support and encouragement during my first year with the station. Thank you, Rhonda and I hope it won’t be too long before we see you back in an active role at the station.

I would like to close this report by acknowledging the excellent work performed by a special group of people:

Firstly, our Station Manager Greg McCosker. Greg has now been with us for over two and a half years. There is no doubt that his media knowledge and experience has taken the station to a new level of professionalism resulting in a perceptible improvement in listener compliments and a commensurate reduction in complaints. Thank you Greg, we hope we will have your dedicated service well into the future.

Secondly, the members of the Management Committee who have unfailingly risen to the challenge when asked: Vice President Jim Hales, Secretary Rhonda, Treasurer Charles Godfrey and members Ian Wright, Peter Roan and Michael Shapter. It’s been a real pleasure to work with you over the past 12 months.

Lastly, to all the staff and volunteers at 4SFM Sunshine FM, thank you. This station continues to grow and deliver a quality service to our listening audience and I’m confident that with your continued dedication we will raise the bar even higher in the years ahead.

Paul Warren President Sunshine FM Radio Association Inc.
