Bernadette Vu | Willow Glen PresidentTo whom it may concern: !As Willow Glen Key Club’s current president, I, Bernadette Vu, strongly recommend that Donald Franks be considered a recipient of the Member of the Year award. !A first-year member of Willow Glen Key Club, Donald’s dedication to this organization has stood out tremendously. After the new officers for the 2013-2014 term were placed into their position, I had one member who I would always see by my side, joining me for various events. Before truly getting to know Donald, I noticed that he was a bit shy and not particularly sociable with anyone in the club, so I began talking to him. Soon after, even before the school year started, Donald had started coming to social and service events simply for the sake of service! He began attending Key Club meetings every Tuesday, participating in our club socials, and volunteering at all available service events. !Donald even encouraged members to join him for division and district events such as RTC, FRN, and upcoming DCON 2014. On occasion, he would also invite members and officers to Kiwanis DCMs every month so they can learn more about what it means to be a part of the Kiwanis Family. He is always encouraging members to attend service events and consistently offers his assistance to any Key Club officer, should they need extra help. He is very pleasant and courteous to any advisor, Key Clubber, and officer he meets. Donald demonstrates the character and qualities that one searches for in a leader. His intelligence, diligence, leadership skills, and honesty outweighs any other member in the club and has impressed me by far. He is very punctual and always finishes his tasks without any supervision. He goes to other schools’ service events just to meet new people. He loves doing service unlike any other. He blossomed into such a great leader for the club, and transformed into such a different, happier person than before. He has become acquainted with so many people in Key Club, and has been such a great companion to every individual he has met. !Donald should be recognized for his outstanding achievement. He accomplished his goal to become such a great member. I am so glad to have met a great leader and friend like him. !Bernadette Vu Willow Glen Key Club President

TIFFANY PHAMTiffany Pham | IP Willow Glen President

To whomever this may concern, !It is my pleasure to recommend Donald Franks, one of the most dedicated Key Clubbers I have met, as a potential candidate for Member of the Year. As the immediate past Willow Glen High School Key Club President and Division 12 South Executive Assistant, I have recognized Donald as a talented and motivated individual who has an immense passion for serving others in Key Club International. His diligence and persistence have not only impressed me, but have also inspired me. !Donald is truly an exceptional Key Clubber with such a strong work ethic. He has taken on many roles and responsibilities during his Senior year, a few of which include taking five Advanced Placement classes and being Senior Class Treasurer. He manages to balance all of this, while still putting Key Club as one of his top priorities. Donald is always stepping up to improve Willow Glen Key Club in any way he can from running meetings to being in charge at service events whenever needed. Not only does he keep a strong bond between his fellow Key Clubbers, he also attends Kiwanis DCM to keep in contact with our Kiwanians. He is very positive, proactive, and outgoing. Donald has made rapid growth this year and I am so glad to be a part of his Key Club journey. !In addition to experiencing firsthand the extreme eminence of Donald’s work ethic and abilities, I have also been exposed to his caring and compassionate nature, as well as his superb leadership skills. Other Key Clubbers, especially those on his board, respond to him very well, and he is always willing to lend a hand. He has planned some of the biggest events for Willow Glen, such as our social events to form closer bonds between everyone in the club, to many fundraising events to help increase our club’s funds. He listens keenly when others have suggestions, and is very open to change when it comes to anything related to Key Club. I cannot think of anyone more willing to learn and grow, and I have strong confidence that Donald will be one of the most promising candidates for Member of the Year. !Sincerely, Tiffany Pham Willow Glen High School IP Key Club President

KYLE DIMLAKyle Dimla | D12S News Editor

To whom it may concern: !I hereby recommend Donald Franks of Willow Glen Key Club to be recognized as Member of the Year of the Cali-Nev-Ha Key Club District. Although Franks only got involved in Key Club during the 2013-2014 term, he has demonstrated his outstanding amount of dedication he has for this organization and how efficiently he has worked to better his home, school, and community. Franks went above and beyond his position as a member and did all he could not only to assist his home club president Bernadette Vu, but also to help Division 12 South. Varying from running errands for his home club to occasionally coming early to division council meetings to help set up, Donald has truly outdone himself as a member of Key Club International. By taking any opportunities to serve or lead, to other active Key Club members, Franks has served as an active role model. Franks superseded the role of a standard member of Key Club International — he has participated in several interclub events, reached out to new members, and has served on the Division 12 South spirit committee for Fall Rally North 2013. Not only is Donald Franks a member in good standing, I know for a fact that he has played the role of an exemplary member who reaches beyond his constraints. I remember that Donald became active over summer, participating in an interclub carwash with Ann Sobrato Key Club and Willow Glen Key Club. It has been quite the experience to see him grow as a Key Club member and as a role model leader to his peers. If anyone is to be recognized as Member of the Year, I firmly believe that Donald Franks is one of the best candidates up for consideration. !Burning with service, Kyle Dimla Division 12 South News Editor

Philip Witcraft | D12S Executive AssistantTo whom it may concern: !I am writing on behalf of Donald R Franks regarding the position of Key Club Cali-Nev-Ha District, 2013-2014 Member of the Year. I met Donald in July of 2013 at the July Division 12 South DCM, where I had just recently been appointed as one of the three Executive Assistants to 2013-2014 D12S Lieutenant Governor, Lindon Tran. Donald and I have since extensively worked together regarding many projects and towards the success of our own home clubs, division, and district. Through these experiences, I am honored to personally vouch for his commitment to Key Club, and his embodiment of our core values in his club work, other leadership positions, and personal life. Donald has managed to fufill the age-old leadership qualm, that position should never dictate activity. Despite only having been in Key Club for less than 6 months, Donald, as only a general member, identified, and worked tirelessly to mend issues within his home club. As a result, his home club now has a masterfully designed website, the officer board now meets weekly and effectively, the club has not only grown in members, but also in service hour output, and Willow Glen Key Club is now actively recognizing a member and officer of the month For his relentless efforts and commitment to service, Donald was appointed to serve WGHS Key Club as Editor. !On the division level, Donald has proven his dedication to service, his fellow key clubbers, and his commitment to excellence time and time again. I am in no wat exaggerating when I say that without his help, there would not have even been an August DCM. Through his efforts as one of the Division 12 South Spirit Coordinators he managed to lead D12S to the final round of spirit cheers. If I could describe Donald in one word, it would be dedicated. He is absolutely dedicated to not only this wonderful organization, but to making the world a better place. Whether it be the Division Challenge, Question of the Month, or the monthly submissions to the newsletter, Donald never fails to not only perform, but perform with an honestly, inspiring level of excellence. !The Key Club motto is "Caring, our way of life." Donald R Franks truly lives a life dedicated to caring for others, his community, and for the betterment of the world as a whole. !I, Philip Witcraft, with great confidence, and without a hair of doubt strongly recommend Donald R Franks to be awarded with the Cali-Nev-Ha District Key Club 2013-2014 Member of the Year award. !Wishing you warm regards and good health, Philip Witcraft Vice President | D12S Executive Assistant

Robin Hagan| Kiwanis D12 Secretary

To whom it may concern, !My name is Robin Hagan and I am the Secretary of the Willow Glen Kiwanis Club. The Willow Glen Kiwanis Club sponsors the Willow Glen High School Key Club and that is where I first met Donald Franks. !Donald has been an exemplary club member, organizing, participating, and volunteering at many fundraisers such as car washes, and selling candy and hotdogs at school, to raise funds for two of Kiwanis International’s branded programs: 1) Pediatric Trauma Program which trains doctors in pediatrics so that there is a Pediatrician on staff in the hospital emergency room since the care for infants is completely different than it is for children and adults; and 2) Maternal Neonatal Tetanus – so far Kiwanis International has wiped out tetanus in several countries and now working on Africa. Donald has volunteered at one of our biggest fundraisers which is a seven week concert series to raise funds for the Turn Around Scholarship Program for at-risk high school students. Donald shows up every week to make popcorn, wrap hotdogs, make nachos, help put up banners, etc. !Donald is currently the Web Editor and Member Recognition Chair, but that’s just the beginning. Donald presents the club with updates at weekly meetings; actively promotes key club social, service, and fundraising events on campus; attends Key Club DCM’s as well as Kiwanis DCM’s; was voted member of the month in 09/2013; is part of the Spirit Committee for Fall Rally North which raises money for PTP and MNT; drafted a new Board proposal for 2014/2015 officers; created and maintains the club web site; is back-up historian with camera in hand; is a team leader in any situation; created original flyers for the Club Faire; attended the Kiwanis Lt. Governor’s installation dinner; and created and delivered first office award of the term. Donald continues to motivate and recognize fellow members’ accomplishments on a daily basis. !Donald is dependable, thoughtful, respectful, polite, a hard worker, and committed to serving the community. I’m sad to say he is a senior this year and he will be missed very much. !I believe Donald can meet any challenge that comes his way and I am so glad to have known him these last two years. !Robin Hagan, Secretary Kiwanis Club of Willow Glen

COMMITMENT

TO SERVICEDuring the 2013-2014 term, I will have served over 100 hours with Key Club and other Kiwanis-Family events. Though in

some months it was more difficult to budget time for service projects, I found that there was always at least a single service event available for me to attend and help my community. I found the following events were to be the most memorable.

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Commitment to Service Page 9

KIWANIS SPECIAL GAMES 2013-2014

By far, my favorite Key Club experience was the one that got me involved in Key Club: the Kiwanis Special Games. It was the event that opened my eyes to the world of service that we seem to often overlook.

Seeing the hundreds of Key Clubbers donating time out of their busy schedules to help put smiles on the faces of kids with special needs touched my heart.

Indeed, there are people out there who are genuinely kind, giving, and caring. But then again, of course there are—it's our way of life.

WALK TO END ALZHEIMER’S

The Walk to End Alzheimer’s was a service event close to my heart. The feeling was indescribable as we walked around with clipboards and pens, trying to spread awareness for this disease that affects thousands of families each year.

Crafting plastic flowers and writing small notes to loved ones, I assisted many participants with various activities. When the race itself began, I helped guide the runners, walkers and joggers along the right path to the finish line.

The event lasted for four hours, but our impact will last a lifetime. Even though our volunteer work was brief, we were still able to raise awareness, comfort families who came for loved ones or friends, and put smiles on hundreds of people’s faces, if only for a short while.

BOOKSINWALKATHON

I later helped distribute prizes to the runners who ran a discint number of

miles, increments of five. Prizes ranged from key

chains to bamboo, from kites to duffle bags. It was a blast handing rewards

to the smiling kids.

As the kids and some alumni walked around the

outside perimeter of the field, I helped punch holes

in their lapcards, indicating how many miles

they completed.

Booksin School was my elementary alma mater,

and as a former participant myself, I

thought no better way to spend the day than with my own school at one of the highlighted events of

the year.

ROSE GARDEN WINTER PRUNING

Up early at 8:30AM on Saturday, January 11th, I joined dozens of other volunteer groups for the Municipal Rose Garden’s 2014 Winter Pruning. Donned with gloves and equipped with rakes, pruners, and wheelbarrows, we helped remove leaves from beds of budding roses. To be as efficient as possible, we separated into groups, making the process of raking, pruning, and disposing fairly simple. The event lasted for three hours, allowing all involved to effectively beautify the garden. It was a wonderful feeling to be a part of the group that is responsible for making our graduation venue as stunning as it is.

As a member, an appointed officer, and a Spirit Committee member, it is my responsibility to instill and uphold the Key Club Core Values to the best of my ability. I do not teach, explain, and repeat. To purposefully enlighten others on our way of life, one must demonstrate, cooperate, and lead. By encouraging participation and involvement, the members I serve can properly experience and understand the Core Values.

CARING

KEY CLUB WEEK | YOUR WAY

As a part of Key Club International’s Key Club Week, we decided to write letters to veterans who served our country during the Vietnam war. We prepped two tables outside our general meeting area, printed and cut paper for members and non-members, and provided pens for people to start writing. We collected over 50 letters in just a short amount of time; afterwards, we handed the letters over to our sponsoring Kiwanis Club who assisted us in mailing them out. Members, non-members, officers, even faculty alike, were generous enough to take the time out of their limited lunch period to write a brief “thank you” to the veterans that helped keep our country safe.

FUNDRAISING FOR A CAUSE | HALLOWEEN-STYLE

A number of years ago I participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF. However, after some cleaning before the holiday season, I discovered the original box I used with money still inside. Realizing I had not yet sent in the money from those few years ago, I decided this past Halloween to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF again, this time turning in every penny inside. Put together with some loose change I found in my room, I was able to gather about $30 in total. Though it can be awkward at times greeting strangers, candy already in hand, with our small orange UNICEF boxes, it was worth it — together, our combined fundraising efforts will provide clean water, health services, food, and education to children who need it.

INCLUSIVENESS

INSPIRING MEMBERS | THE FUTURE BOARD

After the retirement of this term’s Willow Glen board members, we will need officers who are confident, capable, and caring to help serve the next generation of members. To ensure this, board members, including myself, actively seek out underclassmen as potential candidates to succeed the current board. We thoroughly explain to them the roles and responsibilities associated with a position — it is much more than a title, it is one of many essential elements of a well-functioning club. It is our hope that by actively promoting and encouraging members to run for positions, the next term will be even more active and successful than the one we had the pleasure of serving ourselves.

WILLOW GLEN | FIRST ANNUAL SOCIAL

After attending in a number of club socials hosted by other clubs within the division, I proposed that Willow Glen host its very own social for the first time in years. The social was held at Paul More “Cherry” Park, the first day of winter break. After spending some time bonding with one another, playing games such as “I love my neighbor who…” and “Cat vs. Mouse,” the Pie-An-Officer auction began. Officers took turns taking whipped-cream pies to the face for various dollar amounts in order to raise money for the club as well as PTP. With over 30 members in attendance, this is a tradition we hope the club will continue for years to come.

DECEMBER GOLDEN ACTION | HOLIDAY WISHES

CHARACTER

BULDING

Since November 2013, Division 12 South has had monthly GOLDEN actions suggested to members in order to help make our community a better place. For the month of December, members were asked to create a holiday card and drop it off to someone in their neighborhood. In the spirit of the holidays, I created a PDF celebrating various events that were soon approaching and filled the interior of the book with happy, encouraging sayings to put smiles on the faces of my unsuspecting neighbors.

KEY CLUB WEEK | KUDOS TO KEY PLAYERS

For the third day of Key Club Week, I sent out over 25 small messages to friends, family and Kiwanis advisors, thanking them for everything they have done and included some personal touches to make them feel good about themselves once they read it. Some of the conversations and responses can be read below.

FRN PREP | LEARNING THE CHEERS

LEADERSHIP

As a member of the Division Spirit Committee, it was my responsibility to cooperate with my Spirit Coordinators and help the members of my club learn the cheers that we would be screaming at FRN the following weekend. With help from President Bernadette Vu, we gathered the FRN attendees and began teaching the cheers. We would then ask members to demonstrate certain cheers for their fellow Key Clubbers to show how spirited they were. This preparation-before-the-official-preparation put Willow Glen ahead of the game before the entire Division learned the cheers together at the following DCM.

CHRISTMAS IN THE PARKEvent Chair

We would have many service events at once, and chairs for these events were often the officers who found said events. Stepping in to chair events allowed me to actively bond with more of our members and develop a sense of leadership among the Willow Glen Key Clubbers. When our shirt design was finalized, I also took it upon myself to seek out the completion of an ERF as well as create the documents, forms, and systems necessary to effectively order and distrubute shirts to interested buyers.

CORE VALUECYCLE

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Commitment to KC Core Values Page 23

The Key Club Core Values work almost as a cycle. As indicated by the outside diagram, each value leads into another until the cyle

makes one complete loop. It is the mastery of the Key Club Core Values that makes members

of this organization some of the best.

By caring for the members we serve, we

can build up their character or teach

them how to build up the character of

others.

Through the building of character, we can

make members more comfortable in a Key

Club environment. This will allow them to feel

included.

By including members into social events,

service events, and various activities, we

can encourage members to take on

leadership roles.

Leaders in turn take on the responsibility of caring for the new

members who will then restart the cycle of Key

Club Core Values.

INVOLVEMENT AND

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

This is my first and only year with Key Club International. Nevertheless, I did my best to take part in every opportunity that this organization has provided to fully appreciate the Key Club experience. In the past year, I have been actively involved at the club, division, and district levels, and at end this term, the international level at ICON. The following pages will display the highlights of my year in review.

Region Training Conference was my first Key Club social event that I attended. Filled with workshops, opportunities and friends galore, I never felt more at home than to be surrounded by people who truly cared about service and Key Club itself. Bonding with complete strangers was new to me, but the people in my Drama group didn’t feel like strangers. After only a few minutes, it felt as if I had known them for years. RTC was an unBEElievable experience that opened my eyes to a world of service.

FRN

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Involvement & Accomplishments Page 31

Fall Rally North was one of the largest and most-praised events I had heard of from my home club. When we arrived in Six Flags, D12S was already prepped and cheering before stepping foot off the bus. As we clamored through the park, making our way to the stands for the rally, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of unity among my fellow division. Simply knowing I was a parrt of the wave of green and gray, shouting at the top of my lungs “D12, D12 SOUTH” made me proud to call myself a member of this division and organization.

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Involvement & Accomplishments Page 32

DCM

My very first Division Council Meeting was the one Willow Glen hosted: July DCM at Music in the Glen. After the meeting we brought out parachutes for the members to play games and learn names. I have attended each and every DCM that 12 South has hosted (with the exception of one) even giving the official club reports during some of the meetings. At each meeting I am introduced to someone new, or I introduce Willow Glen members to someone new. Some of the bonds we make now, I am convinced, will last a lifetime.

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Involvement & Accomplishments Page 33

SOCIAL

It was a wonderful feeling arriving at Paul More “Cherry” Park and seeing over half of the members I serve in attendance, ready to bond with other members. It felt like we finally found a way to connect and reach out to our members. The biggest turnout, however, had to be the Pie-An-Officer auction. Taking three pies to the face, whip cream up the nose, and possibly-stained clothing home, I can vouch for my fellow officers that this was one of the most succesful events we have executed. My vague proposal of simply “having a social” turned out better than any of us could have anticipated.

SPIRIT

MEMBER OF THE YEAR CONTEST|Involvement & Accomplishments Page 34

Being a part of the Division Spirit Committee as well as getting the club members I serve pumped up for events such as FRN and our Willow Glen social was such a rewarding experience. Opportunitites such as these allowed me to understand a sense of spirit and how I could best convey energy and enthusiasm to all members. Using these new skills, I hope to help the Willow Glen Spirit Coordinators of next year’s term be as pumped and spirited as can be.

Once it was confirmed that our mascot was the Dai Li, I sought out artistic members who could assist us in the design of a t-shirt. With the help of fellow member Michael Ynchausti, we were able to quickly get a vectorized design for our shirt. I decided to coordinate this event, preparing a form and spreadsheet so that our orders could be organized and succinct. We currently have over 35 orders and will reach 50 before DCON arrives.

I knew immediately after the presentation of the Member Recognition Program at RTC that I wanted to help Willow Glen recognize its members. I became familiar with the program and later became appointed Member Recognition Chair for Willow Glen. It is a great pleasure of mine to be able to hand a member or officer a certificate of accomplishment in appreciation for all of his or her hard work and dedication to the club, school, and community.

WEB

Early in the school year I asked our Club Editor if he would like assistance in updating our club’s website, for it had not been updated since the start of summer. He agreed, so I developed a new website, one that allowed our club to express itself more vividly and offer more information than previously. Willow Glen Key Club now offers a fully-functional website that allows its members to see their membership points, our current service events, and photos from past socials and other gatherings.

As a member, I did my best to serve my club, division, and district as best as possible. Even before my appointments, I wanted to help Bernadette make a name for Willow Glen and to make WGKC a hit at our school. Whenever she needed assistance with supplies, designs, or purchases, I was always a simple text or phone call away. I assured my friends, members, and officers that if they ever needed help, I would always be a person to ask, ready and willing to serve.

My involvement in Key Club as a senior is quickly coming to an end, but as a Kiwanis Family member, it has only just begun. I have accomplished many of my goals already as a member of Willow Glen Key Club, but there are still many more to come. Conclave, DCON, and ICON are right around the corner, There is still more to do: more people to meet, more hours to serve, more friendships to establish. My journey in Key Club is not over yet, and I will do my best to make the most of it.

Each month I would make it a goal of mine to attend the Kiwanis DCM, for I felt it was an essential element of which I should understand as a member of the Kiwanis Family. In addition, my interaction with other clubs, whether it was informal chatter or official board meetings outside of school, taught me a lot about how we touch more lives than just the ones we see.

CLUB RUSH

To help my club advertise and promote itself, I created flyers that included information for interested members regarding Key

Clubbers meetings, what members do, and how they can earn service hours. We also provided them with some small candies to

sweeten the deal.

Before I graduate and retire with the Willow Glen board and Senior

Class of 2014, I would hope that I instill the qualities below to a

younger generation of leaders. I selected these attributes because I

feel that I exert these on a consistent basis. Additionally, I am

convinced that any leader should have these qualities so that their

term is successful and enjoyable.

DRIVENLeaders who are driven are highly motivated and love what they do. It is this

motivation that allows leaders to be great, to strive for excellence, and accomplish their goals. Any individual who wants to take on a leadership

role should be driven and excited to do what they do.

PASSIONATEPassion is fuel to the flame. Leaders who are passionate exert a feeling of fun, exciting energy so contagious that others join in. Whether it is decking

out in division colors or screaming your head off during cheers, passion should be a top priority for future leaders.

HUMOROUSAdding comedy to conversations can soften people up. Some members

may be shy; sometimes making them smile or laugh can get them back in the game! Putting a smile on someone’s face should always be the goal of

a great leader.

COMMITTEDLast, but certainly not least: commitment. Leaders should be fully

committed to the work he or she has does. At times it may be difficult, even overbearing, but the end result is worh it. Being committed to your club,

school, division, project, etc. is an admirable quality in anyone.
