Course Update
Fall is here and with it comes the usual golf course maintenance practices that are common to every course in
Southern California. We have begun the process of a small-tine aeration of our greens and over seeding the tee boxes
and green surrounds with winter rye grass. Unlike most other golf courses, this maintenance work has no impact on
course conditions at Steele Canyon, because of our 27 hole layout. We simply close those 9 holes to allow for sufficient
growth and recovery time. Meanwhile all our members and guests are able to play the other 18 holes in excellent
condition. This process is repeated for the other two 9 nine hole courses and will all be completed by October 26.
Even though our team is busy with this fall work, they are still working diligently at other projects on the course.
The mulch work continues on Ranch 6 and 7 and is nearing completion. We also
recently did some cart path work beside the red tee on Vineyard #1.

Pavers were added in a spot where golf cars were cutting the corner too sharply and driving over the mulch and a
few plants. We will be doing this to other areas of the cart paths on the course as needed.
Steele Staff in the News
Congratulations are in order for two of the golf shop personnel. First, Alan Scheer, our PGA Head Professional, did
extremely well at the recent Southern California PGA Section Championship Tournament held at Bermuda Dunes
Country Club. Alan finished second with a score of -5, rounds of 72-71-68, only two shots back of the champion,
Michael Block. This is the same annual Section Championship tournament that Alan won in 2013. Along with a nice
check, Alan now has qualified to play in the 2018 National PGA Club Pro Championship in Monterey, CA.
Secondly, golf shop assistant, Felipe Villagomez, has qualified for the finals of the MSOP (Major Series of Putting)
coming up in Las Vegas at the end of October. Felipe advanced by doing extremely well at both the San Diego local
and regional qualifying events. He now has a chance at putting to win $75,000!
Congratulations and best of luck to both Alan and Felipe in their next event.

Maintenance Update - Antonio Osuna, Superintendent
Even though Steele Canyon Golf Club has a tremendous stand of Bermuda grass in all of our roughs, there are still a
few unwanted grasses that can spring up in places that have to be dealt with. We always consider these various
unwanted grasses to be weeds on our course. Other golf courses in the county may not, and will simply mow it down
to look like the rest of the turf. These grass types include green kyllinga, wire grass, kikuyu grass and goose grass. All
of them will go dormant along with our Bermuda grass in the winter time once the cooler weather and frost arrives.
However, we want to treat and kill them prior to the winter period so that they do not come back more aggressively in
the spring.
A perfect example of how we are treating these areas was just completed on the left side by Vineyard # 2 green.
There was a patch of goose grass along the edge of one of the bunkers. We sprayed it with a nonselective herbicide to
kill it. We then waited for a couple of weeks to make sure that the Goose grass was dead before removing it with a
sod cutter. Finally, we replaced this turf area with good, clean Bermuda grass from our sod nursery that is located left
of the fairway on Ranch #5. In a couple weeks, you will never notice that any work was done in the area. We plan to
do this in areas needed, so that when the Spring of 2018 arrives our Bermuda turf will come out of dormancy as pure
as it can be.
