RACING 1-2-3

KEY TO SYMBOLS

Top Rated: The horse with the best chance based solely on past form, specially tailored to a 0-100 scale.

Horses For Courses: A suitable track for the horse, compared to its lifetime record on similar courses as defined by Timeform’s course data.

Jockey Uplift: The engaged rider has a notably higher Timeform Jockey Ranking than those who’ve ridden the horse on its most recent starts

Trainer Form: A hot trainer to follow, based on Timeform ratings-related measurements looking at the recent performance of runners.

Going: Good to Soft (Good in places)

A right-handed oval track a little over a mile and a quarter in extent, almost flat with sharp bends, favouring handy types as opposed to gallopers, especially as it’s a quick-draining course that tends to produce less testing ground than most tracks in midwinter. A polytrack strip was installed on the bend running away from the stands towards the end of 2012 in order to protect ground which tended to get worn and bare due to overuse. The two-mile start is on a spur on the last bend. There are eight fences (four in each straight) to a circuit and, whilst not stiff, they do claim more casualties than might be expected, a lot of the handicaps catering for low-graders.

Pace Information: Very Weak

1 SOCIALIST AGENDA (396) 98111- 5 10-12 | 68.9kg L J Morgan Adam Wedge Impressive when winning all 3 bumpers starts in 2020 and this sharp track on decent ground should be right up his street on hurdle debut.

2 SONGOFTHELARK (IRE) (281) t 839- 5 10-12 | 68.9kg

Lucinda Russell Stephen Mulqueen Brother to useful hurdler/high-class chaser Invitation Only but was held back by inexperience when well held in a C&D bumper on debut in January. Has since had wind surgery. Also tongue tied.

3 ARTHUR’S SEAT (IRE) (253) 1001221- 4 10-11 | 68.5kg Keith Dalgleish Billy Garritty Successful in bumpers at Huntingdon and Kelso either side of a pair of creditable runner-up efforts. Seems sure to play a big part on hurdle debut.

4 CHEMICAL WARFARE (IRE) (24) 7586 4 10-11 | 68.5kg Tjade Collier Callum Bewley Looks a longer-term project.

5 MINELLA PLUS (IRE) (13) h 95322 4 10-11 | 68.5kg

Donald McCain Brian Hughes Fair form when placed both starts in bumpers and ran to a similar switched to hurdles when second to an impressive winner at Sedgefield (16.8f) 13 days ago. Hood goes on and likely to be thereabouts.

5 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:13-8 Arthur’s Seat, 2-1 Socialist Agenda, 5-2 Minella Plus, 22-1 Songofthelark, 80-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:This promises to be the ideal test for SOCIALIST AGENDA, who was impressive in winning all 3 bumpers starts in 2020, so he’s fancied to defy a 13-month absence and make a successful hurdling bow. Arthur’s Seat also had a productive time of things in bumpers and looks an obvious threat, as does recent Sedgefield second Minella Plus.

Pace Information: Strong

1 ARMATTIEKAN (IRE) (16) (CD) b 97912-43631 7 12-1 | 76.7kg

Donald McCain Peter Kavanagh (7lb/3kg) Notched fourth chase success with plenty in hand at Carlisle (2m, good to firm) recently. However, forecast slower ground here and this 9 lb higher mark are causes for concern.

2 RAECIUS FELIX (IRE) (132) 891P54P5-53 7 11-12 | 75.3kg Rebecca Menzies Brian Hughes Dual winner last year, but form subsequently nosedived and it’s easy enough to look elsewhere.

3 DOKTOR GLAZ (FR) (210) (D) v 992344- 11 11-9 | 73.9kg Rose Dobbin Craig Nichol Made the frame on each of his 4 starts last season following a lengthy absence, fourth of 9 at Carlisle (2½m, good) when last seen in April. Resumes on a 2 lb lower mark and couldn’t rule out.

4 BOY’S ON TOUR (IRE) (37) (D) 100644-30543 9 11-7 | 73.0kg

Lucinda Russell Stephen Mulqueen Hasn’t tasted success since scoring at Perth (2½m) in August 2020, but he’s now 12 lb below that winning mark and his latest third over that C&D was a respectable effort. One for the shortlist.

5 EAGLE RIDGE (IRE) (191) (CD, BF) t 9755113342- 10 11-0 | 69.9kg N. W. Alexander Danny McMenamin Winner of 3 of his 5 starts at this course, the latest a narrow verdict in a 3m handicap chase in January. Ended last season with a creditable second at Perth and he’s in with a shout.

6 GRAYSTOWN (IRE) (21) (D) s+t 9680-P213F1 9 10-13 | 69.4kg Stuart Coltherd Sam Coltherd Largely campaigned at Hexham nowadays, registering fourth success there (15.6f, soft) 3 weeks ago. Step back up in trip no problem and 3 lb rise fair, so he’ll be a threat if his jumping holds up.

7 GRIPPER (16) t 98761235F5 6 10-12 | 68.9kg William Young Jnr Thomas Willmott (5lb/2kg) Just the one success to his name following 21 hurdles starts, and he was a tailed-off last of 5 in the Carlisle handicap chase won by Armattiekan 16 days ago.

8 ROLL OF THUNDER (29) (D) s 905354-2552 12 10-0(9-9) | 63.5kg (61.2kg) James Walton Conor O’Farrell Veteran who put in a good shift when hitting the crossbar in first-time cheekpieces at Hexham at the start of the month. However, he’ll do well to go one better here from 5 lb out of the handicap.

9 MAUREEN’S STAR (IRE) (144) (D) 80358F75P-P 8 10-0(9-1) | 63.5kg (57.6kg) Hugh Burns Edward Austin (7lb/3kg) Poor handicap chaser in Ireland and there has been little in the way of encouragement in her 4 starts since joining present yard.

9 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:11-4 Armattiekan, 7-2 Graystown, 6-1 Eagle Ridge, 13-2 Boy’s On Tour, 8-1 Doktor Glaz, 14-1 Roll of Thunder, 16-1 Raecius Felix, 22-1 Gripper, 200-1 bar

TIMEFORM VIEW:This looks tricky and the tentative vote goes to BOY’S ON TOUR, who hasn’t got his head in front for over a year but he’s been given a chance by the handicapper and there were encouraging signs last time. Doktor Glaz will be a threat if ready to roll, while Eagle Ridge evidently likes it here and he shouldn’t be far away, but there are doubts surrounding recent winners Armattiekan and Graystown.

Going: Good to Soft (Good in places)

Pace Information: Strong

1 COPPER COIN (27) (D) 10049/3611-U1 8 11-12 | 75.3kg Michael Scudamore Richard Patrick It’s really clicked with him of late, winning last 3 completed starts. Did it emphatically back from a break in Uttoxeter handicap hurdle 4 weeks ago and even a 9 lb rise may not stop him.

2 GIOVANNI CHANGE (FR) (45) 9938911-335 6 11-9 | 73.9kg Mark Walford Jamie Hamilton Front-runner who completed a Market Rasen double in the spring but handicapper has been winning the argument since.

3 TAXMEIFYOUCAN (IRE) (217) (C) s 973P395169- 7 11-2 | 70.8kg Keith Dalgleish Billy Garritty Course winner over 3¼m in February but he’s struggled for form since, including in 4 runs on the Flat this autumn. Is back to that successful winning mark but has too much to prove.

4 WEMYSS POINT (214) b 966- 9 11-1 | 70.3kg Philip Kirby Joe Williamson (5lb/2kg) Multiple hurdles winner earlier in career. Did win on the Flat in April but has posted a couple of poor runs on AW since. Bit to prove back jumping.

5 COOLBANE BOY (IRE) (191) 941/2324867- 6 10-13 | 69.4kg Sandy Thomson Danny McMenamin Bumper winner/fair maiden hurdler at up to 3m in Ireland. Needs keeping a close eye on in the betting now switching to handicap company for new trainer Sandy Thomson.

6 AURORA THUNDER (27) (BF) 9914P632-34 7 10-12 | 68.9kg

Lucinda Russell Stephen Mulqueen Fairly useful handicap hurdler who ran close to form when third on her Kelso reappearance in September. Didn’t convince over fences back there since and quickly reverts to the smaller obstacles.

7 MORRAMAN (IRE) (18) (CD) 99524/0-6442 8 10-8 | 67.1kg

Donald McCain Brian Hughes Dual hurdles winner in 2019. Seems to be getting a bit of a run at his racing again now and ran well for second at Hereford (25.5f) 18 days ago. In the mix for his in-form yard.

8 PAMMI (29) (C, D) s 9721124134 6 10-7 | 66.7kg Jim Goldie Harry Reed Already a 3-time winner this season, the latest at Perth (3m) in September. Latest 2½m Hexham fourth no more than respectable, but perhaps the return to 3m will help.

8 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:9-4 Copper Coin, 5-1 Morraman, 6-1 Coolbane Boy, 8-1 Aurora Thunder, 9-1 Giovanni Change, 9-1 Pammi, 16-1 Taxmeifyoucan, 16-1 Wemyss Point

TIMEFORM VIEW:COPPER COIN really has come good in 2021 and is fancied to defy the handicapper again and add to his Uttoxeter success at the beginning of the month. Coolbane Boy is an intriguing runner on first outing for Sandy Thomson, particularly if the market vibes are strong. Morraman is also respected for in-form Donald McCain.

Pace Information: Weak

1 GAELIK COAST (FR) (17) (CD) 1001/125130-2 7 12-1 | 76.7kg

Donald McCain Brian Hughes C&D winner who returned from 6 months off with good second of 5 in handicap chase at Wetherby (19.4f) 17 days ago, hitting last and losing out narrowly. Player with that run under his belt.

2 MARRACUDJA (FR) (28) (C, D) t 97343312-51 10 11-12 | 75.3kg Dan Skelton Katie O’Farrell (5lb/2kg) 11/10, landed 3-runner handicap chase at Fontwell (17.8f, heavy) 28 days ago. This demands more, but he’s not ruled out for yard among the winners.

3 SLANELOUGH (IRE) (16) 96232F61-13 9 11-4 | 71.7kg Rose Dobbin Craig Nichol Scored at Perth in May and back from 5 months off with creditable third of 5 in handicap at Carlisle (15.9f, good to firm) 16 days ago. Much respected back up in trip.

4 CEDAR HILL (IRE) (178) (BF) 99114210F-3 7 11-2 | 70.8kg Sandy Thomson Danny McMenamin Three-time winner last term who posted good third at Kelso (17.1f, good) in May. Has won off a break before, so he’s expected to be bang there.

5 DINO BOY (FR) (9) 97132/P12P-2 8 11-1 | 70.3kg Iain Jardine Conor O’Farrell Dual chase winner who resumed with good second of 5 in handicap at Carlisle (20f, good to firm) 9 days ago, just failing. Not taken lightly despite 2 lb rise.

6 ELMONO (FR) (45) (C) t 94212-4653U 10 10-9 | 67.6kg

Lucinda Russell Stephen Mulqueen Course winner who arrives in decent nick, unseating rider fourth at Kelso (21.6f, good to firm) 45 days ago. Not totally dismissed.

6 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:3-1 Gaelik Coast, 10-3 Marracudja, 9-2 Cedar Hill, 11-2 Slanelough, 6-1 Dino Boy, 16-1 Elmono

TIMEFORM VIEW:GAELIK COAST lost out only narrowly on his reappearance after a final-flight error at Wetherby so this C&D winner is fancied to build on that and go one better now. The returning Cedar Hill, who bagged three successes last term, goes well fresh and is feared most with Fontwell scorer Marracudja also in the mix.

Pace Information: Weak

1 STAINSBY GIRL (245) 982321/1534- 7 11-12 | 75.3kg Donald Whillans Craig Nichol Hexham scorer who wasn’t disgraced when fourth in handicap hurdle at Newcastle (2m) in February. Has won off a break before, so she’s well worth considering on her return.

2 CONSTANCIO (IRE) (17) (D) b 9923-683423 8 11-11 | 74.8kg

Donald McCain Brian Hughes Arrives in good nick, third of 5 in handicap hurdle at Wetherby (16f, good to firm) 17 days ago. In the mix.

3 CALDWELL (22) (C) 942421-P 4 11-10 | 74.4kg Michael Scudamore Richard Patrick Course winner but pulled up in handicap hurdle at Chepstow (2m) 22 days ago. Needs to get back on track.

4 LE MAGNIFIQUE (GER) (218) 95P1433- 4 11-8 | 73.5kg Keith Dalgleish Billy Garritty Lightly-raced winner over hurdles. Last of 14 in handicap at Newcastle (10f) 33 days ago, so he has something to prove back in this sphere.

5 SARVI (105) (CD) b 987037-4414 6 10-7 | 66.7kg Jim Goldie Harry Reed C&D winner but he arrives under a bit of a cloud on the level. Needs to bounce back reverted to hurdles.

6 GEMOLOGIST (IRE) (27) t 100522d2249-3 6 10-5 | 65.8kg

Lucinda Russell Stephen Mulqueen Remains a maiden after 22 runs, but back after a wind op with good third of 8 in handicap at Kelso (16.2f, good to soft) 27 days ago. Holds good claims off 2 lb lower mark now.

6 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:3-1 Constancio, 4-1 Gemologist, 4-1 Sarvi, 6-1 Le Magnifique, 13-2 Stainsby Girl, 9-1 Caldwell

TIMEFORM VIEW:GEMOLOGIST is fancied to finally open her account having posted a very good third at Kelso after a wind op and is now racing off a 2 lb lower mark. In-form Constancio is next on the list with his yard among the winners, although the returning Stainsby Girl needs considering too given her good record when fresh.

1 RETURN TICKET (IRE) (17) (CD) t 98314631P-1 8 11-12 | 75.3kg Rebecca Menzies Brian Hughes Has done well since joining this yard (3 small-field wins last season, including one over C&D) and made a successful return from 6 months off at Wetherby. This is tougher up 2 lb.

2 SOME REIGN (IRE) (17) (D) 993/1F2515-3 10 11-8 | 73.5kg Rose Dobbin Craig Nichol Won two 2m handicap chases last term and not seen to best effect behind Return Ticket on comeback at Wetherby. Player down 2 lb.

3 GOLD DES BOIS (FR) (16) (BF) t 9730-137222 7 11-4 | 71.7kg Iain Jardine Conor O’Farrell Maiden chase (17f) winner in Ireland in May and good runs for new yard this month. Bit more needed still in this company up 4 lb.

4 THE KING OF MAY (FR) (175) (D) s 9931/23250-4 7 11-2 | 70.8kg Brian Ellison Danny McMenamin Dual 2m novice handicap chase winner during 2019/20 campaign and some good efforts to kick off last term. Not so good fitted with cheekpieces when last seen, though.

5 DUBAI DAYS (IRE) (197) (D) h 995/3717161- 7 10-10 | 68.0kg N. W. Alexander Jamie Hamilton Enjoyed a good 2020/21 season over hurdles, gaining third success when dead-heating at Ayr (2m) in April, joining leader on line. May have more to offer now attentions are switched to chasing.

6 SWORD OF FATE (IRE) (16) (D) 10014242412 8 10-0 | 63.5kg Leonard Kerr Sam Coltherd Did the job in good style at Perth (2m) last month and ran well off this mark at Carlisle next time, no match for the winner from the last but comfortably seeing off the rest. Respected.

6 DECLARED RUNNERS

BETTING FORECAST:7-2 Return Ticket, 4-1 Sword of Fate, 9-2 Dubai Days, 5-1 Gold Des Bois, 6-1 Some Reign, 7-1 The King of May

TIMEFORM VIEW:DUBAI DAYS did well over hurdles last season and could have even more to offer now chasing. He gets the vote over Sword of Fate, while Some Reign might be able to reverse Wetherby form with Return Ticket and take a hand.

BETTING FORECAST:2-1 Waltons Grove, 11-4 Kopa Kilana, 9-2 Martalindy, 7-1 Ginger Mail, 15-2 Eden Mill

TIMEFORM VIEW:Without the benefit of market clues, it might be best to side with WALTONS GROVE, who has plenty of speed in his pedigree and represents a stable that does well in bumpers. Kopa Kilana also makes appeal, but he’s unlikely to be suited by a speed test, so it could be that Martalindy emerges as the main threat to the selection.

TIMEFORM 1-2-3:1. WALTONS GROVE (IRE) 2. MARTALINDY 3. KOPA KILANA (IRE)
