Christiane Amanpour will lead PBS’ new flagship late-night public affairs program with Amanpour and Company. Replacing Amanpour on PBS, a simulcast of CNN’s Amanpour, the one-hour program will feature wide-ranging, in-depth conversations with global thought leaders and cultural influencers on the issues and trends impacting the world, from politics, business and technology to arts, science and sports. Produced by PBS and WNET in collaboration with CNN, Amanpour and Company will center the conversation on global and domestic news with contributions by prominent journalists Walter Isaacson, Michel Martin, Alicia Menendez and Hari Sreenivasan. The new series will also air on CNN International weekdays. Amanpour has earned every major television journalism award, including 11 News and Documentary
Emmy Awards, four Peabody Awards, two George Polk Awards, three duPont-Columbia Awards, and the Courage in Journalism Award. She is an honorary citizen of Sarajevo and a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Freedom of the Press and the Safety of Journalists. “I’m delighted to expand my role at PBS from interim to permanent along with this remarkable diversity of voices and views,” says Amanpour. “Never has the time for exploring our world and America’s place in it been so urgent. And I am also thrilled to be a female filling this role at this time!”
Amanpour and Company premieres Monday, September 10, at 10pm and airs Monday through Friday at 4pm and Tuesday through Saturday at midnight on KQED 9.

All summer, KQED has been asking, “Which novel has had the biggest impact on your life?” It all started with a groundbreaking TV series from PBS hosted by Meredith Vieira called The Great American Read. Designed to spark a national conversation about reading, literacy, and the books that have inspired, moved and shaped us, The Great American Read is an eight-part series that returns to KQED 9 on Tuesday, September 11, at 8pm. The Great American Read explores the power of literature and the joy of reading through the lens of America’s best-loved novels — as chosen by you.
You’re invited to vote for your favorite from a list of 100 novels, which includes The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, The Color Purple by Alice Walker, The Call of the Wild by Jack London, Beloved by Toni Morrison, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan and more. The series culminates in the first-ever national vote to choose America’s Best-Loved Book, which will be announced when the grand finale airs on Tuesday, October 23. Tune in each Tuesday to explore the varied worlds and varied genres of books on the list. Episodes will focus on
themes such as Heroes and What We Do for Love, and they will feature interviews with some of the biggest names in literature including Gillian Flynn, George R.R. Martin, Armistead Maupin and Jason Reynolds (pictured). You can share your pick for America’s Best-Loved Book, find KQED coverage of all things book-related and contribute to the conversation at kqed.org/greatamericanread. Vote at pbs.org/the-great-american-read/vote.
The Great American Read returns Tuesday, September 11, at 8pm on KQED 9.

The MindShift podcast is back with new stories that explore innovation in education. Over the course of the six-episode season, hosts Ki Sung and Katrina Schwartz, who also produce KQED’s MindShift blog, will introduce listeners to a fascinating cast of educators, researchers, parents and students who are developing effective strategies to improve how kids learn. It’s easy to see a child’s education as a path determined by grades, test scores and extra curricular activities, but learning is about more than the points schools tally. The third season explores the intangible — and often overlooked — elements of academic success: emotional safety, trust and relationships.
Listeners will hear how teacher home visits can transform parent-teacher relationships, helping parents see how they can effectively partner in their child’s education; how far a public high school goes to develop an inclusive experience for the crucial transition to high school; how to address childhood trauma so it doesn’t become an obstacle to learning; and what parents and communities can do to help kids grow. Launched in August 2016, the MindShift podcast aims to improve learning for all. MindShift began in 2010 as a daily blog and has grown its audience through social media, weekly email newsletters and a podcast.
Listen to new episodes of MindShift every other Tuesday, beginning Tuesday, August 28, on Apple Podcasts, NPR One, Google Play or wherever you get your podcasts.

Bay Brilliant Profiles Local ChangemakersMeet the makers who are defining Bay Area arts and culture
This fall, KQED Arts will launch Bay Brilliant, a multimedia web series that celebrates ten artists and makers who are defining Bay Area arts and culture. This year’s honorees fuse creativity, art and social justice in practices that range from traditional art-making to community building. With collections of immersive photographs, in-depth interviews and intimate audio storytelling, Bay Brilliant takes you into the studios, hearts and minds of ten radical innovators who make the Bay Area a beloved hub of creative ingenuity. The online series features musicians, filmmakers, gallerists, arts administrators, playwrights and more — trailblazers helping shape the artistic narratives of their respective communities.
Meet some of this year’s honorees and check out the full list at kqed.org/baybrilliant. Jessica Bejarano has brought classical music into the 21st century as the fearless music director of the San Francisco Civic Orchestra, the oldest community orchestra on the West Coast. Under Bejarano’s leadership, the orchestra has become one of the most diverse classical music groups around in terms of race, age, sexual orientation and economic opportunity, bringing down the barriers of access for performing musicians. Over the past few years at Oakland’s Betti Ono Gallery, Anyka Barber has proven herself to be an oft-talked-about curator, with her
consistently thought-provoking exhibitions. She has used her centrally located downtown gallery as a vital platform for black women artists with exhibits like Black Women Breathing and Viral: 25 Years from Rodney King. Community organizer Quynh-Mai Nguyen is a busy figure both onstage and off: she has worked with Silicon Valley De-Bug and the School of Arts & Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza in San Jose, she sings with the folk duo Q&A, and she writes poetry and produces the Sonido Clash music festival. Working to bridge the Asian American and Latinx cultures in San Jose, Nguyen helps the South Bay thrive.
Bay Brilliant is a multimedia web series, available only at kqed.org/baybrilliant.
Funding for KQED Arts is provided by The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, Yogen and Peggy Dalal, Diane B. Wilsey, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, the California Arts Council, the William and Gretchen Kimball Fund and the members of KQED.

Radio Specials and Highlights
Twelve workers who might otherwise go unnoticed — a deli waitress, a bus driver, a metal scrapper, a longshoreman and a bathroom attendant, to name a few — take us inside their places of work to show us what they do, why they do it and what it takes to get through a shift. In this one-hour radio special, we explore their worlds. One day, 12 very different jobs, in the workers’ own words — words we might otherwise never hear. A lot of kids imagine growing up to be astronauts, doctors, basketball stars or firefighters. But often these dream jobs require money, education or coaching that most people
never get. So then there are the jobs most people don’t even think about: the night guard in the impound lot, the exotic dancer on the breakfast shift, the mother who cares for other people’s children. Someone does them. Each of these nonnarrated audio stories was produced by a graduate student at the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism in partnership with Homelands Productions and Bending Borders.

Join British actress Dame Penelope Keith (The Good Life, To the Manor Born) on a tour of Britain’s stunning coastline. Armed with her vintage Batsford travel books, Keith seeks out the community heartbeat unique to coastal life, with villages that cling to the side of cliffs, snuggle around harbors, proudly guard estuaries or lounge along beaches. From fishing and lifeboats to pleasure boating and holiday making, the sea brings both joy and danger, which Keith covers with panache.
Penelope Keith’s Coastal Villages airs Thursdays at 8pm on KQED Plus.
