The romantic, moving, and epic story of Upstairs Downstairs reopens six years after the Bellamy family moved out of 165 Eaton Place at the end of the original series. Recently inherited by young Sir Hallam Holland (Stoppard), the house has been long vacant, and its considerable needs are taken in hand by Hallam’s vivacious wife, Agnes (Hawes). Her first order of business is to hire servants, for which she retains Rose (Marsh), the proprietor of a domestic employment agency, although Agnes is unaware of Rose’s previous association with 165. After lining up a butler (Scarborough), a cook (Reid), a housemaid (Kendrick), and other staff, Rose realizes she may be of no further use to the new family. And so it continues, just as it did 30-odd years ago, with stories of the upper class and working class intertwining in complex and interesting ways against a

backdrop of world events—in this case, the abdication crisis of Edward VIII, the growing belligerence of Hitler and Mussolini on the continent, and the rise of the British Union of Fascists under Sir Oswald Mosley. Amid the triumphs, disasters, joys, and tears, it’s just like old times at 165 Eaton Place.

It’s 1936 and, sweeping away the cobwebs from the most famous address in Masterpiece history, a new couple moves into 165 Eaton Place.

Upstairs Downstairs

The stellar cast includes series originals Dame Eileen Atkins (Cranford, Murder on the Orient Express) and Jean Marsh (Sense and Sensibility, Willow), with Marsh reprising her Emmy Award–winning role as Rose Buck, now promoted from parlormaid to housekeeper, and Atkins appearing as the aristocratic Lady Maud. With a script by acclaimed screenwriter Heidi Thomas (Cranford), the sequel also stars Keeley Hawes (Wives and Daughters), Ed Stoppard (Brideshead Revisited),

Anne Reid (Bleak House), Claire Foy (Little Dorrit), Adrian Scarborough (Cranford), Art Malik (The Jewel in the Crown), and Ellie Kendrick (The Diary of Anne Frank).

Three one-hour episodes air on KQED 9 Sundays, April 10, 17, and 24, at 9pm.

Three more new episodes are scheduled to be released in 2012.

As the presenting station, KQED is proud to premiere a new season of the San Francisco Symphony’s acclaimed Keeping Score television series with documentary and concert programs revealing the life and music of composer Gustav Mahler. As one of the world’s leading interpreters of the music of Mahler, music director Michael Tilson Thomas and the San Francisco Symphony explore an entire universe of emotion in Mahler’s music. Beautifully shot on location in the Czech Republic, Austria, Hungary, and New York, two one-hour documentaries provide an unprecedented journey through the origins and influences of this powerful music, the triumphs and tragedies that shaped it, and the legacy it left behind. Each documentary episode is followed by a one-hour San Francisco Symphony concert program.

“Gustav Mahler was a visionary musician, both as a performer and as a composer,” notes Tilson Thomas. “In his music, Mahler made reference to many forms of music, his huge symphonies made from materials abstracted from the songs, dances, marches, serenades of many cultures within the Austro-Hungarian empire. In Keeping Score: Mahler, we walk in his footsteps, visit the places and sounds that influenced his life and music, and, we hope, bring people closer to this great music and his lasting legacy.” The Keeping Score project (keepingscore.org) is a natural outgrowth of the San Francisco Symphony’s almost century-long commitment to bringing people of all ages and musical backgrounds closer to great works and instill a lifelong love of music. The series will air nationwide on public television stations later this year. Tell your friends!

KQED Public Radio’s 24-hour international, national, regional, and local news and information service is available on frequencies 88.5 FM in San Francisco, 89.3 FM in Sacramento (KQEI), 88.3 FM in Santa Rosa, and 88.1 FM in Martinez. It is also available on Comcast digital cable channel 960 and live online at kqed.org.

The California Report newsmagazine can be heard Fridays at 4:30, 6:30, and 11pm on KQED Public Radio 88.5 FM. In Sacramento, listen on KQEI 89.3 FM. Listen online at kqed.org/californiareport.

With the help of its listeners, KQED Public Radio recently offered music fans across the country an opportunity to explore the sounds of the Golden State. Listener-suggested songs were among those included on “Beyond California Dreamin’,” a playlist of 88 California-inspired tracks featured on NPR.org. Songs for the playlist were selected in part from suggestions made by listeners of The California Report, KQED’s weekly newsmagazine, heard on more than 35 stations across the state. Their picks included a diverse array of well-known hits: (the Eagles’ “Hotel California”), indie tracks (Jay Farrar and Ben Gibbard’s “Big Sur”), and hip-hop anthems (LL Cool J’s “Going Back to Cali”). The staff of The California Report compiled the songs into a playlist for NPR Music, which streamed it on NPR.org in January. Suzie Racho, a producer and director for The California Report, recently talked about the project and what the playlist says about California.

What led to the idea for “Beyond California Dreamin’”? NPR Music put out a call in October 2010 for curated music streams that would be featured on their site as well as on their mobile app. But the idea for “Beyond California Dreamin’” really came from The California Report series California Songs, which we’ve been producing since 2005. The series features songwriters talking about the inspiration behind their songs. I saw the stream as an extension of that.

What type of response did you get from listeners when you asked for song suggestions? We asked for suggestions every week leading up to the launch of the NPR.org stream. Between staff and listeners, I got more than 100 responses. A few songs came up over and over again, including “Hotel California,” “California Dreamin’,” and Joni Mitchell’s “California.” So those were automatically in. Usually if a song got more than one or two mentions, it made the list.

Were you surprised by the variety of songs suggested? I wasn’t surprised at all. California as an inspiration infiltrates every musical genre, every art form! What I wanted to do was compile a list that included some iconic songs, but I didn’t want it to be “California’s Greatest Hits.” I was deliberate in trying to craft a list that had songs from different genres, different decades, and included quite a few songs that were under the radar. In terms of tone and theme, it’s all over the map too. For every song extolling the beauty of California, there’s a song about being disillusioned about the state and leaving. Where is the playlist now?You can check out the playlist at californiareport.org.

California Dreamin’Radio listeners help compile diverse playlist.

Lark Rise to Candleford

The residents of Lark Rise and Candleford return in a new (fourth) season of the warm-hearted and award-winning adaptation of Flora Thompson’s novels. The series opens with the arrival of Gabriel Cochrane (Richard Harrington), the handsome and once wealthy owner of a large iron foundry. After the bankruptcy of his business and the death of his new wife, Gabriel finds himself both penniless and homeless. Moved by his plight, Dorcas (Julia Sawalha) offers him a job as blacksmith and a room above the forge. They both know that the solution is only temporary.

Coming in MayFreedom Riders: American Experience

From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Veteran filmmaker Stanley Nelson’s inspirational documentary is the first feature-length film about this courageous band of civil rights activists.
