Downton Abbey returns for an epic fifth season of intimately interlaced stories centered on an English country estate — a deliciously entertaining formula that’s made it the highest-rated drama in PBS history. Viewers can expect to follow plot threads left dangling from last season, including Lady Mary’s courtship contest, Lady Edith’s trials as a secret single mom, Thomas’s scheming against Bates, Robert’s battles against modernity, Tom’s quest to be true to his ideals, Violet’s one-line zingers and much more. One of the recurring themes of Downton Abbey is change, from the wrenching consequences of the Titanic disaster in Season 1 to a notorious automobile accident at the end of Season 3 — plus World War I, women’s rights, and the new morals, inventions and fashions of the 1920s. Which is where Season 5 kicks off. It’s 1924. The United Kingdom has its first Labor Party prime minister. The radio is the latest miracle of the age. And Downton’s traditional ways are besieged on all fronts, as evidenced by this exchange between the head housekeeper, Mrs. Hughes, and the butler, Mr. Carson:
Are You a Downton Abbey Super Fan? Take part in KQED’s social media scavenger hunt for access to an exclusive super fan party.
KQED is hosting a Downton Abbey super fan party onWednesday, February 25. The details will be revealed to those who get one of the 200 tickets, but trust us, this will be quite a fête. Here’s what we can tell you: The party will take place at a downtown San Francisco bar (which means 21+ only). There’ll be themed drinks, light hors d’orves, great entertainment and special Downton Abbey–themed prizes. Costumes are encouraged, of course! How do you get a ticket? You’ll have to prove your dedication to Downton by taking part in a fun social media scavenger hunt. Be sure to Like KQED on Facebook or follow us on Twitter to get the details. We’ll start sharing scavenger hunt hints on January 10.
Spoiler Alert!
Check KQED Pop for weekly Downton recaps.
Downton Abbey is more than just a television show, it’s become a bona fide pop culture phenomenon. KQED’s pop culture blog is bringing back hilarious recaps, including character rankings for each episode. Who will come out on top each week? Check Monday mornings to find out. kqed.org/pop
“ We’re catching up, Mr. Carson. Whether you like it or not, Downton is catching up with the times we live in,” says the forward-thinking Mrs. Hughes.
“ That’s exactly what I’m afraid of!” the butler retorts.

Looking for something new and unusual to watch? Explore big scientific mysteries by going incredibly small with Deep Look, a new Web video series created by KQED’s award-winning science team and presented by the PBS Digital Studios YouTube network. “Deep Look is born out of curiosity,” says its Lead Producer Josh Cassidy. “There are amazing things happening in a grain of sand or the leaf of a tree. You just have to learn how to look for them.” The series is shot by Josh in ultra-HD and uses macro cinematography, microscope video and animations to explore the unseen at the very edge of our visible world. Writing and narration by award-winning KQED Science radio reporter Amy Standen, an original score by local composer Seth Samuel and
editing by Kia Simon all help to bring a fresh voice and perspective to the series. In just two to three minutes, the videos transport you to another world. You’ll see a pygmy seahorse’s unexpected act of camouflage up close; journey across entire continents and thousands of years to discover the amazing life of sand; and come face-to-face with parasitic wasps who trick oak trees into making houses for them filled with food. Videos in the works include stories about how butterfly wings get their color at the nano scale, the physics of sea otter fur and the evolution of flight in walking sticks. New episodes are released every two weeks on YouTube. Watch and subscribe. kqed.org/deeplook
Meet the series producers at a special event this month. See below.
Join KQED Science at the California Academy Science’s NightLife on Thursday, January 15, from 6-10pm for an evening filled with behind-the-scenes looks at two new series from PBS and KQED. Join Dr. M. Sanjayan (pictured), a leading conservation scientist and host
of the new five-part PBS series EARTH A New Wild — coming to KQED in February — for a preview screening and discussion. Then, meet the producers of KQED’s new short video series, Deep Look. Plus, find out about QUEST, Nature and NOVA programs that are in the works.

Bay Area Life
Boom-bust. Starting with the Gold Rush, the Bay Area has experienced dramatic up-and-down cycles that generate tremendous new wealth for some and trouble for others. And the current technology boom is no different. The city of San Francisco says more than 45,750 new businesses have started here since 2010 – some already becoming household names internationally. But the picture is not rosy for all. Many longtime Bay Area residents and businesses are getting priced out. Housing is a pressing issue, and traffic has become a major public concern.
KQED News Examines the Bay Area’s Latest Economic Boom
KQED’s Boomtown series — on television, radio and online — will chronicle all of this and more. We will identify what is happening in real time and seek the causes of and possible solutions to the conflict between the old and the new. We want to hear from you. Tell us your story ideas about this new economic boom. What questions would you like KQED reporters to explore?

What is a typical workday for you?I have two jobs — anchor and reporter. When I come in at 10am I have on my anchor hat, and I’m thinking about the midday newscasts. I’m looking at what Josh has done that morning and what’s been on The California Report. I’m talking to our editor about anything new coming in. It’s a lot calmer for me than the morning and evening anchor slots — it’s not so much a race. After the 1:04pm broadcast, I move into reporter mode. I’m either filing stories from my desk or I’m doing what I really like to do — feature reporting, going out in the field and working on stories that take a bit more shoe leather. I like talking to people who are going through real, everyday struggles. I’ve been doing a lot on housing recently, which is the big Bay Area story right now, and something I can relate to.
Is there a story that stands out?One I did on tiny houses. The people who live in them tend to be quirky and innovative and fun to talk to, but I was
Turning the Microphone on a KQED Reporter Stephanie Martin Taylor began her broadcasting career on television in Pittsburgh, PA, where she worked from 2am until noon — with no break. Since coming to KQED Radio almost nine years ago, she’s been “all over the clock,” starting as the evening radio news anchor and moving next to morning anchor. Around the time of the recession, she was part of a KQED show called California Money before becoming midday anchor, then evening again and midday again. “I now have the most normal schedule I’ve had in my broadcasting career,” she notes.
surprised by how crazy other people are about tiny houses. Readers and listeners responded and shared the story, and it went viral.
What do you like about your jobs?I consider myself to be a lifelong learner and an inquisitive person, so I love that it’s an education every day. I get to talk to people that I would probably never otherwise come in contact with — from Maya Angelou and Dianne Feinstein to firefighters who were on scene at the World Trade Center bombing. What other kind of job would give you that kind of access?
I’ve been asking your colleagues if they have any guilty pleasures. Where do I even start? [laughs] I’ll admit that occasionally I get McDonald’s milkshakes. I love their fries too. And in this building, I hide my McDonald’s bag. I don’t know if there’s any other place I’d have to do that!

LeRoy Robert Ripley rose to fame during the Great Depression, transforming himself from a skinny, bucktoothed boy into an entertainer who mesmerized the nation with his razzle-dazzle blend of homespun Americana, colorful exotica and freakish oddities. American Experience tells the story of the man who popularized the iconic phrase “Believe it — or not!” and shows us why we still can’t resist his challenge. Pictured: Robert Ripley with the Feejee Island Mermaid, which he exposed as half monkey and half fish cleverly sewn together by a taxidermist (1939).
Ripley: Believe It or Not airs Tuesday, January 6, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Discover what your cat is really up to after it heads out the cat door. In a groundbreaking experiment, 50 cats from a village in Surrey, England, are tagged with GPS collars and their every movement is recorded, day and night, as they hunt in backyards and patrol the garden fences. You may think you understand your pet, but their secret life is more surprising than we thought.
The Secret Life of Cats airs Wednesday, January 14, at 9pm on KQED 9.

Based on the novels of best-selling author Anne Cleves, the British crime drama Vera stars Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn as Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope. Vera is a brilliant murder investigator and kind-hearted loner with a tendency to become obsessed with her job. Her trusted, long-suffering colleague, Sergeant Joe Ashworth (David Leon), is both her right-hand man and surrogate son, and together they approach each case with unparalleled gusto and professionalism.
Vera airs Thursdays at 9:30pm on KQED 9, beginning January 29.
