Why Melville Went Sustainable
Why go sustainable
Three years ago, Melville recognised that the need to make the business more
sustainable. This decision was made because, ethically, it was the right thing to
do and also because it would enable us to help clients on their own sustainability
journey. Three other drivers that we identified were...
Waste of resources. The industry was enormously wasteful due to the bespoke
and short-lived nature of events;
Reputation. Increased concern among the public and other stakeholders,
including customers, regarding sustainability issues;
Payback. As a driver of resource efficiency and a better quality of service,
sustainability offers access to new markets, customer retention and ultimately
payback

Sustainability Credentials
2010 Melville | GES have been implementing BS8901
2011 Melville | GES became the one of the first UK companies to be externally
certified to obtain the BS 8901 standard.
2012 Melville | GES were one of the first companies to achieve ISO 20121 3rd party
certification.
We are striving to transform the sustainability of the entire events industry. We are doing
this one step at a time by working closely with our customers, suppliers and trade
associations to share best practice, learn from others and transfer our own experiences.
Our recent certification to ISO20121 is just one of the many steps we are taking on our
sustainability journey which includes monitoring, measuring and providing staff training.

Journey
Melville worked to make a framework relevant to its
day to day operations.
A spreadsheet captured all aspects of sustainability
performance and sets out clear roles and
responsibilities for Melville employees
identifying and ranking sustainability issues that matter
to the business.
60 issues were identified. The list was then narrowed
down to 17 material issues
Scoring each issue on how important it is for the
business and how much control Melville has over it.

Achievements The focus on sustainability has led to several changes in the business.
• Waste mapping and segregation - Virtually all materials are re-used or re-cycled
• Stands - All modular stand systems are now made entirely from reusable materials
• Printed boards: Melville is experimenting with biodegradable products in graphics
• Carpets Melville developed a recyclable carpet , approx one million sq metres of
carpet laid each year is now recyclable. The polypropylene backing is used to
produce plastic pellets that can in turn be reused for plastic products.
• Paper - Melville is about to have a compactor on site allowing for close to 100% of
paper while at the same time minimising the need for transportation;
• Wiring Melville developed its own system for power and lighting for shell scheme
stands, Smartwire. It is totally reusable with no cable wastage. Smartwire also uses
low energy 35w lamps that reduce energy consumption

Event KPI’s
Each show that Melville organises now comes with a
sustainability score card.
As illustrated, the score card shows the KPIs of a given
event and meets the increasing demand of customers
to be able to demonstrate their sustainability
performance.
The score card captures all significant impacts
systematically and makes it easy to compare and
manage these over time.
Producing the score card is now business as usual
and poses little administrative burden since it is
integrated into the planning process.

Transportation
Melville is working actively to bring down its carbon footprint, both through technical upgrades
and better planning.
Technological improvements. to use Euro 5 engines – a cleaner, more efficient engine –
reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions;
Training and awareness. Commercial vehicle drivers have attended a training course,
delivered by a specialised external provider, on driving techniques to reduce carbon footprint
and fuel usage;
Improved planning. working to reduce its transport-related carbon footprint through systematic
planning efforts. The two key priorities are about avoiding empty runs and limiting the use of
external vehicles

London 2012 Olympic Games
INTRODUCTION
We are very proud of the successful delivery of our largest ever single UK project –
the temporary fit out of the venues for the London 2012 Olympic Games. As the
recent recipient of the ISO20121 accreditation, Melville | GES are considered
leaders in the industry and as such wanted to not only meet, but to exceed where
possible, the LOCOG sustainability goals.
AIMS & OBJECTIVES
The project was to deliver the simultaneous temporary fit out of 27 Olympic venues
as well as create and develop a unique panel system specifically for the Olympics,
all within strict sustainability guidelines.
RESULTS & BENEFITS
200,000m2 of flooring was laid, 30,000 m2 of partitioning built and 4,900m2 of
drape was hung; more than 800 doors were installed, over 1,200m2 of platforms
were built and some £2m worth of electrics were installed; while planned vehicle
journeys helped notch up nearly 60,000 miles of travel.

CASE STUDY – Olympic Legacy
London 2012 laid claim to be the most sustainable games in history
and to set a benchmark against which all other events will be judged.
The materials supplied, installed, removed and carefully disposed of
are ....
• Over 200,000 square metres of floor covering was laid of which over
97% was recycled.
• Melville GES Logistics totalled a staggering 60,000 miles, all
vehicles were Euro 4 /5 and fully compliant with the London
emissions Code Of Practice.

CASE STUDY – Olympic Legacy
The innovative approach of Melville | GES by creatiing a new walling
system, known as MelTrad, specifically for the Olympic fit out.
Used with existing aluminium framework systems, the Meltrad panels
were created by us to meet all of LOCOG’s fire, aesthetic and
sustainability requirements. The panels exceeded 30,000 square metres.
One of the greatest legacies to come from the Olympics project for us to
keep the true vision of the London Olympics by continuing to “Inspire a
Generation”..
For a small investment we have been able to ensure that our walling will
inspire generations to come by being used to complete the building of
The Heart of Love School and orphanages in Nigeria. While the
remainder of the £250k worth of Meltrad will see new life in projects by
14 other well deserving charities including another school in the Republic
of Burundi

CONCLUSIONS
“Giving World is delighted to work with Melville | GES to
redistribute Mel Trad boards once used during the Olympics.
Almost 10,000 Mel Trad boards have been given a new lease
of life by 14 UK charities. The boards have been used
diversely from dry lining buildings, partitioning and creating
shelving to refurbishing caravans as temporary
accommodation for the homeless. 3,000 boards have winged
their way to Nigeria for building an orphanage and school in a
remote area of Enugu.”
