Should the city or state declare an emergency, or the safety of our members and staff be in question, it may be necessary for the Y to close. Progressive Resistance TrainingGet stronger with more muscle definition by gradually and safely increasing your resistance (weight load) in this progressive body sculpting class. Progressive TRXThis class is a TRX series in which you will start from the basics of TRX and progress each week into more complex exercises. Each week, exercises from the previous class will be reinforced and a new series of exercises will be introduced to develop strength, balance, flexibility and core stability using the TRX Suspension Trainer. Pre and post session body composition analysis will also be included in this class. FREE Healthy Eating, Healthy Living SeminarsSaturday, September 8th at 9:00 amSaturday, November 2nd at 9:00 amNutrition for Optimal Health and Weight Loss by Olga Arnold, NTP. Olga will discuss how improving your health through good nutrition is important to lasting weight loss and health.

Tuesday, October 2nd at 7:00 pmMovie view and review – Hungry for Change is an amazing documentary that is a must see for anyone who is serious about optimal health for themselves and their family. After watching this 89 minute movie, a discussion will be held with Olga Arnold, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, about ways of implementing a nourishing and healing way of life into your own home.

Get At the Roots Weight Loss ProgramA 12 week class designed to get your body healthy in order to reach your ideal body weight naturally and permanently. This program is designed to give the body what it needs nutritionally to speed up metabolism and burn body fat! Get At the Roots Weight Loss program addresses underlying causes of excess weight gain such as hormonal imbalance, deficient brain chemistry, digestive problems, food sensitivities and more. Fitness and Nutrition Small Group Training This 8 week program addresses both aspects of total health. Attend a 30 minute group lecture with Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, Olga Arnold, to learn a different topic of healthy eating each week followed by a 45 minute Boot Camp session as a team with a personal trainer. Nutrition by OlgaOlga Arnold, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner, will help to dispel the confusing and mixed information about food, diets and health in our media. This individual one-on-one counseling will help you get back to the basics and achieve and maintain optimal health. With a customized nutritional protocol or properly prepared, nutrient dense foods, your body will become balanced and healthy from inside out. New Member Introductory Nautilus InstructionAs a new member joining the Y, you may receive 2 appointments (included in your membership fee) to learn the correct usage of the strength training machines. Teens ages 14-18 must go through the Fitness Center Orientation to be educated on proper technique. Contact the Fitness Center Staff to make your appointments.

Kung Fu for Young Dragons (ages 8-12)A beginning Kung Fu course for ages 8 – 12 that features elements of White Dragon Fist Kung Fu and Wudang Style Kung Fu. Class members will learn basic techniques and exercises, beginning level Kung Fu forms, and some basic self-defense and applications. Respect, good manners, communication skills, discipline, and non-violent conflict resolution will be emphasized and taught as key components of true martial arts training and personal expression. Junior Gym & Swim (7 - 10 years)Love games in the gym and then playing in the pool? Games in the gym will get the kids’ hearts pumping for 30 minutes, then the instructor will escort them to the pool for a 40 minute lesson. Me on the MoveThis class is geared toward children with developmental disabilities. The instructor will identify and plan appropriate, meaningful activities for each student’s personal success in physical fitness. The focus will be on physical and motor fitness, fundamental motor skills and patterns, and skills that will help promote physical fitness. Kids Karate (6 - 11 years)An introductory class to Japanese Karate taught by instructors from “Bill Adams Karate”. Class is divided into two age groups with an instructor for each group. Program goals are: developing listening skills and refining motor skills with a focus on respect, self-control and ability to work with others. Sign to Me - Sing to Me (0-5 years)Come join us as we sing, play...and learn some Sign Language! Teach your little one to communicate before they can speak. Kinder Gym & Swim (3 - 5 years)This hour long class combines fun in the pool and the gym! In the gym, we provide experiences which help your child develop physical and social skills and in the pool, your child will participate in our group preschool swim lesson, grouped according to ability level. Travel Team Basketball (Grades 4-9)A competitive basketball league for the experienced player. Traveling to other towns is necessary. Players must try out for this program. Try outs will be held in October, league runs November-March. Non-member rates include a 5 month membership. Players will be required to pruchase a jersey. Spooky SprintJoin us for our 3rd Annual Melrose Family YMCA Spooky Sprint 5K! Bring the family in costume to run or have fun cheering on the runners. Pre-registered runners will receive a t-shirt and a gift bag. Prizes will be awarded for top runners and best costumes.

London Summer OlympicsTravel with us to London to celebrate and participate in the Summer Olympic Games! Join us for opening ceremonies, the running of the torch, country introductions, and events such as hurdles, discus throw, shot put, 50 yard dash, etc... Register as a family, individual or choose a country. See you at the Games!

Play Pals (18 months - 3 years)This semi-structured play time allows you and your child to play on our preschool equipment. Each week the instructor will introduce activities and obstacle courses for hands on play time. Adult participation is required during class. Splat! (18 months - 3 years)This class is for the young child who loves to let loose and make a mess! Many different materials are used to play in and make works of art. Parents are required to be present during class, as this one gets messy! Kids (and adults too) should bring their own clothing protection.Tuesday 9:30-10:15 am

Pint Size Painting (1 1/2-3 years)Toddlers will get the chance to create freely, with an instructor, based on the story they hear. Children will receive various supplies to allow for creative thinking and inspire their artistic skills. This class strengthens gross motor skills, listening and interpretation. Class will start with a story, focus on painting, and end with clean-up and creative play time.Thursday 9:30-10:15 am

Hop-Skip-Read (2 & 3 years)A fun interactive activity time where you will run, hop, skip and jump through games that will develop gross motor skills. Class will finish each week with a story. (Perfect for the young child who may get tired out after a 1/2 hour of play.)Wednesday 9:00-9:45 am

Alphabet Soup (2 - 4 years)Your child will explore the alphabet through a story, craft, and/or song! This class is perfect for the child who can follow instruction and is interested in stories, art, song and the alphabet. This class is best suited for the child who can hold a writing tool and form basic shapes and letters.Tuesday 10:30-11:15 am

Playground Games (3 & 4 years)We let your little one jump, giggle, and run in this new class! The program is non-stop fun for your preschooler. We introduce your child to silly group games and fun activities including duck, duck goose, parachute games, tag, simple sports games, and more. If you’re looking for a safe, fun and active place for your child to socialize and play while you workout, this is the class for your child.Monday or Saturday 9:00-9:45 am

Soccer (3 - 5 years)This class teaches basic fundamentals, teamwork, and fun with a ball at your feet. This class uses imaginative games and silly play to introduce your preschooler to the fun game of soccer!Tuesday 11:00-11:45 am

Imagination Nation (3 - 5 years)This program provides children with a hands-on approach to learning and socializing. Through such activities as music, storytelling, art, science, building and dramatic play, your child will gain many new skills while making new friends. Week to week, we’ll follow new themes that relate to the seasons and a child’s natural curiosity about the world.Wednesday 1:00-1:45 pm

Ooey Gluey (3 - 5 years)This class is jam packed full of ooey gluey arts and crafts, stories, and songs. Make a mess and have some fun! Watch your child’s excitement grow as they create crafts you can treasure for a lifetime. Please make sure your child wears appropriate clothing protection.Tuesday 1:00-1:45 pm

Mini All-Stars (3 -5 years)This class offers different sport(s)/games(s) each week. The emphasis will be on gross motor movement and cooperation. While the focus of the games will be sports, the kids will have fun in imagination based warm-ups, stretching and cool down games. This class is perfect for the child who is able to follow directions and have fun in a group of peers.Monday (3 & 4 yrs) 10:00-10:45 amSaturday (4 & 5 yrs) 10:00-10:45 am

Make ‘em and Take ‘em (3 - 5 years)Make and decorate edible goodies of your own! Come ready to create and enjoy delicious treats. This class is great for the playful eater who loves to tag along in the kitchen. Playing with your food is ALLOWED! Please inform instructor of any food allergies.Thursday 10:30-11:15 am

Puppet Making (4 & 5 years)Make a different puppet and create a short puppet show from imagination each week. This class is part dramatic play, part arts & crafts. Perfect for the child who loves to play in the land of make believe!Thursday 11:30-12:15 pm

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Duct Tape Art (8 - 10 years)Learn how to construct art, apparel and accessories made from duct tape. We will create items such as rings, bracelets, wallets, hats, bags, shoes and so much more. The program’s projects and possibilities are endless.Tuesday 3:00-3:45 pm

Youth Program “On Demand”This class concept allows the flexibility and freedom to create the ideal YMCA class with 4 of your child’s friends. Most classes have a minimum number of five (5) to run, so gather your friends and lets make a class! GYMNASTICSAll gymnastics classes are held at the Gymnastics Center, 156 Tremont Street, Melrose. Age is based on the first day of the session, sorry no exceptions! It is recommended for gymnasts of all ages to wear a leotard, if possible (sweatpants and tucked in T-shirt are appropriate for boys). All participants must have bare feet and hair must be pulled back tightly for class.

My Y is Every Y: Use any facility Y in New England. We are for healthy living and we want you to stay active and keep moving. We have now made sure there is a Y wherever you are!

Your Y card now provides you free access to any facility in New England. Simply bring your facility/full privilege membership card and a photo ID with you, and you can check into any partner Y in Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont. You can then utilize their gym, pool, fitness, and other wellness facilities, just like any other member! We simply ask that you maintain a current membership at the Y you visit most frequently.

Please note that some Ys in New England do have restrictions on the number of visits or specific program participation; check the Y’s website and click on My Y/Every Y to learn more before you go. You can also visit ymca.net to find the Ys near you.

Military DiscountThe Melrose Family YMCA offers a special six-month memberships to active military personnel and their immediate families. Military families interested in using the YMCA's facilities need to present their military identification cards when signing up for the membership. We Recycle at the Y!Please join us in helping our planet by placing your bottles and cans in our recyling containers located throughout our facility. In addition, there is a paper recycling dumpster located at our child care facility at 106 Main Street, Melrose, where we recycle as much paper as possible from our offices and program departments. You can join us in our efforts by recycling paper from your home or office there as well. The Melrose Y receives a donation to our Growing Stronger Together Campaign for all the paper recycled.

Fun Friday Middle School EventsEvery Friday throughout the school year, the Melrose YMCA and Melrose Recreation Department will be running events and activities for Middle School students. Chaperones and volunteers are needed for all events! In interested, please contact the Melrose Recreation Department or the Melrose YMCA.1st Friday of Month – Common Ground Teen Center at Melrose YThe Common Ground is open and FREE to all Melrose teens in grades 6-8 and is located at the Melrose Y. Qualified staff supervise the center and coordinate activities. The center offers a safe environment for teens to hang out with friends and provides billiards, ping pong, air hockey, video games, computers, and so much more. A full size gym is used for basketball, dodge ball, volleyball and other games. Each Common Ground night will feature a new theme.2nd Friday of Month – Teen Trip NightJoin us for one of our Teen Trip Nights! We will be leaving from the Melrose Middle School at 7pm and taking registered participants on field trips to fun destinations.
