Letter from the Lord Mayor

Melbourne Day is an annual celebration to mark the day free settlers sailed up the Yarra River and landed at the site we now call Melbourne. It was 30 August 1835.

Growth of the city was rapid. Within two years an orderly grid of city streets was set out and in 1842 the settlement was incorporated as a town with a Council elected to manage its affairs. The gold rush and the halcyon days of Marvellous Melbourne followed.

Today the central city is home to Melbourne’s famed laneways, arcades, shopping precincts and public gardens. World-class theatre, art galleries, museums and sporting facilities are all centrally located, while our local cafe culture and robust restaurant scene maintain the city’s vibrancy at all times of the day and night.

In the space of 179 years, Melbourne has developed into a thriving, dynamic and cosmopolitan city: the world’s most liveable city. We are home to people from 200 different countries, speaking 230 different languages and dialects.

I invite you to take part in our Melbourne Day celebrations and reflect on how much Melbourne has evolved over the years.

Robert Doyle

Letter from the Chairman

I am thrilled to finally share the 2014 Melbourne Day program. Our biggest yet!

We’ve got some fantastic events to help you celebrate. And with Melbourne Day falling on Saturday this year, there’s even more reason to join in.

Enjoy a free, all-ages Melbourne Day concert at Federation Square or join a special tour around town on the Urban Explorer that includes a visit to Eureka Skydeck.

Raise your glass in any participating Cheers! for Melbourne Day cafés, bars and restaurants. There’s a corporate lunch, special tours, exhibitions and Melbourne Day history lecture. And for something truly spectacular, set sail in the Melbourne Regatta Day on Victoria Harbour. None of this could be possible without fantastic support from major partner City of Melbourne and wonderful sponsors and program partners.

We invite you, your family and friends to help make our day – Melbourne Day – a success.

Campbell Walker

Show your pride and get behind Melbourne Day.

Melbourne was founded on August 30 when settlers landed on the north bank of the Yarra River from the schooner Enterprize in 1835 and started the first permanent settlement.

Let’s celebrate everything that makes Melbourne great!

Still marvellous after 179 years

Sea Life Melbourne Aquarium Opened 2000

The stunning Croc Lair Exhibit is one of 12 new zones of discovery at SEA

LIFE Melbourne Aquarium. From three spectacular viewing levels, come face-to-face with Pinjarra – one of Australia’s largest saltwater crocodiles. Croc Lair

features an unrivalled viewing experience; a 360 degree, jaw-dropping encounter.

Flinders Street Station Opened in 1910

The famous landmark recorded 93 million passenger movements in 2011-2012. It was the first railway station to open

in Australia in 1854. And the first steam train in Australia pulled into the station.

Eureka Skydeck Opened 2006

Nothing you have ever experienced will prepare you for the awe-inspiring views of Melbourne from the Southern Hemisphere’s highest viewing platform

with the world’s only Edge Experience.

Enterprize Ship Replica built in 1997

John Pascoe Fawkner owned the original Enterprize, used for settlement of the Port Phillip area. Her crew and passengers

proceeded up the Yarra River, where they set up the first European settlement on a site on the north bank - thus founding Melbourne

on 30 August 1835.

Bunjil In Aboriginal mythology, Bunjil the

eagle is a creator deity, culture hero and ancestral being. It is believed by the Kulin

and other Indigenous peoples that, in the Dreamtime, Bunjil took shelter in a

cave located in the part of Gariwerd that is now known as the Black Range Scenic

Reserve - today a popular tourist attraction.

Pie in the Sky, Melbourne Showgrounds

Built in 1977 Heritage listed in 1999 Popular meeting point at the

Royal Melbourne Show.
