Produktionsprozesse werden heute zunehmend durch Unternehmen
erbracht, die im Zuge von Auslagerungstrends global vernetzt
agieren, häufig mithilfe von Kontraktfertigung. Aufgrund kurzer
Marktzyklen und intensiven Wettbewerbs um niedrigste Herstellungs-
kosten für Konsumgüter sind Organisationen, individuelle Akteure
und Prozesse dabei einem hohen Flexibilisierungsdruck unterworfen.
Vor diesem Hintergrund überrascht es, dass die Flexibilitätsforschung
die Kontraktfertigung in den weltmarktorientierten Produktions-
regionen einiger Schwellenländer bislang vernachlässigte. Die
vorliegende Untersuchung setzt sich daher zum Ziel, die geogra-
phische Flexibilitäts- und Arbeitsforschung um diese Perspektive
zu erweitern.
Die Situationsanalyse befasst sich mit der Flexibilität von Betrieben
und Arbeitskräften in der Elektroindustrie der Produktionsregion
Perlflussdelta (Südchina). Im Zentrum steht dabei die Frage nach
dem Zusammenhang zwischen der Arbeitssituation, den soziodemo-
graphischen Strukturen und der Handlungsorientierung der
Arbeitskräfte.

Offering an alternative reading of the contested nature of access to
public resources in Dhaka, this book argues that the contestation of
access cannot be explained only by the city’s rapidly growing
population; it rather describes it as a product of context-specific
structures of power and dependency – “the politics of regulation”.
This study gives a detailed account of the large diversity of local
arrangements and their underlying strategies for negotiation and
legitimation in the process of claim making to water supply. It
presents constellations of influential actors and their interests and
explains how their negotiations in an unbalanced power structure
determine the distribution of and access to public water supplies.
The author followed an ethnographic research approach and applied
a complex and innovative set of qualitative methods for investigation
in a low income inner-city squatter area and in a growing peripheral
settlement of Dhaka. Frequent participation in adda (casual talks),
and personal access to the water supply authority enabled him to
observe the routines of everyday life and the complexities of public
decision making.

The Author
Shahadat Hossain is a Research Fellow at the School of Spatial
Planning, TU Dortmund University, Germany since 2007. He holds an
undergraduate degree in Urban and Regional Planning from the
Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), an MA
in Development Management from the Ruhr Universität Bochum and
a PhD from the School of Spatial Planning, TU Dortmund University.
In the past he worked in development cooperation, taught at the
Department of Urban and Regional Planning, BUET, Bangladesh and
worked in German Research Foundation supported research projects.
Currently he is involved in a research project on translating urban
infrastructures: adaptation and creativity in water and sanitation
systems in African cities conducted at the School of Spatial Planning,
TU Dortmund University. His research interests include urban infor-
mality, citizenship, urban governance, power and politics in planning,
social exclusion, and ethnographic approaches to social science
research.

Access to public space is an essential asset of urban livelihoods.
Pavements, street spaces, vacant plots, public parks and city squares
are used intensively for all kinds of activities. As open space in rapidly
growing and poorly planned conurbations is a very scarce resource, it
is highly contested between different groups pursuing strongly vested
economic, social and cultural interests.
The research for this book is grounded in Bangladesh’s megacity
Dhaka, where more than 300,000 additional inhabitants have to be
accommodated every year in highly densified settlements. Empirical
evidence collected in a consolidated inner-city settlement with low to
middle-income residents and in a low-income settlement without
planning approval serves as the basis for analysis. Following a
grounded theory approach that integrates elements of ethnographic
research, the author applies a complex and innovative set of quali-
tative methods.
With the newly coined term “spatiality of (urban) livelihoods” the
research deconstructs the nexus between poverty and urban space in
the everyday life of urban dwellers and systematises the negotiations
for access to this scarce resource. The emerging actor constellations
and power relations in negotiations are embedded in the recent
discourses on urban informality and spatialities of (in)justice.

Die Dynamiken und Ausmaße der Urbanisierungsprozesse in
China sind weltweit einmalig. In diesem Zusammenhang eröffnet
die Analyse von Stresserleben, Emotionen, Coping und Resilienz ein
vergleichsweise junges und bislang nur unzureichend bearbeitetes
Forschungsfeld. Gleichzeitig fehlt es der gegenwärtigen Fachliteratur
an einer geographisch-psychologischen Diskussion dieser vielschich-
tigen Konzepte unter Einbindung der Komponenten Mensch, Umwelt,
Transaktion, Zeit, Wahrnehmung, Bewertung, Verhalten und
Handeln.
Der vorliegende Band reflektiert diese Aspekte disziplinübergreifend
und analysiert auf dieser Grundlage den Einfluss der Konstruktion
des größten Bahnhofes Asiens auf die Mensch-Umwelt-Transaktionen

Der rapide Urbanisierungsprozess in Indien führt zu einer starken
Überprägung der physischen und sozialen Umwelt mit weitreichen -
den Implikationen für die Gesundheit der urbanen Bevölkerung. Die
Krankheitslast variiert dabei in Abhängigkeit vom sozioökonomischen
Status. Diese intraurbanen Disparitäten sind bisher in Indien aufgrund
des lange bestehenden Fokus auf Stadt-Land-Diskrepanzen sowie
einer mangelnden Datenverfügbarkeit kaum untersucht.
In der vorliegenden Studie wird am Beispiel der entstehenden
Megastadt Pune mit einem Mixed-Methods-Ansatz die Exposition
unterschiedlicher sozioökonomischer Gruppen zu gesundheitlichen
Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren sowie deren Krankheitslast anhand
ausgewählter Indikatorerkrankungen analysiert.
Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass gesundheitliche Disparitäten
sich nicht nur in einer unterschiedlichen Krankheitslast zeigen,
sondern dass auch im Krankheitsverlauf Unterschiede in Bezug auf
die Schwere und Dauer einer Erkrankung sowie das Auftreten von
Komorbiditäten bestehen. Das vorgestellte Konzept ermöglicht eine

Viele Megastädte Lateinamerikas setzten in den letzten Jahren
weitreichende Reformen des ÖPNV um, darunter die Reformen
Transantiago in Santiago de Chile und Transmilenio in Bogotá.
In beiden Städten liegt den Projekten das Konzept des Bus-Rapid-
Transit (BRT) zugrunde, mit dem umfangreiche technische, finan-
zielle und unternehmerische Veränderungen einhergingen.
Wenngleich beide ÖPNV-Reformen auf ähnlichen konzeptionellen
Grundlagen basierten, gestalteten sich jedoch die Umsetzungspro-
zesse von Transantiago und Transmilenio sehr unterschiedlich.
Der vorliegende Band analysiert diese Prozesse und die sie bestim-
menden institutionellen Umstände und untersucht, welche Gover-
nancefaktoren förderlich und hinderlich für die Umsetzung waren.
Er zeigt auf, dass durch die Reformen in beiden Städten nicht nur
die ÖPNV-Systeme, sondern auch die Strukturen von Verkehrs-
governance verändert wurden. Abgeleitet aus den Ergebnissen
dieser Untersuchung werden abschließend Handlungsempfehlungen

Der rapide Urbanisierungsprozess in Indien führt zu einer starken
Überprägung der physischen und sozialen Umwelt mit weitreichen -
den Implikationen für die Gesundheit der urbanen Bevölkerung. Die
Krankheitslast variiert dabei in Abhängigkeit vom sozioökonomischen
Status. Diese intraurbanen Disparitäten sind bisher in Indien aufgrund
des lange bestehenden Fokus auf Stadt-Land-Diskrepanzen sowie
einer mangelnden Datenverfügbarkeit kaum untersucht.
In der vorliegenden Studie wird am Beispiel der entstehenden
Megastadt Pune mit einem Mixed-Methods-Ansatz die Exposition
unterschiedlicher sozioökonomischer Gruppen zu gesundheitlichen
Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren sowie deren Krankheitslast anhand
ausgewählter Indikatorerkrankungen analysiert.
Die Ergebnisse der Studie zeigen, dass gesundheitliche Disparitäten
sich nicht nur in einer unterschiedlichen Krankheitslast zeigen,
sondern dass auch im Krankheitsverlauf Unterschiede in Bezug auf
die Schwere und Dauer einer Erkrankung sowie das Auftreten von
Komorbiditäten bestehen. Das vorgestellte Konzept ermöglicht eine
Beschreibung und Analyse der verschiedenen Ebenen, auf denen
gesundheitliche Disparitäten auftreten oder verstärkt werden können.

Existing research on health seeking is characterized by an abundance
of empirical studies and a lack of theoretical grounding. This book
provides a new approach, a social theory that conceptualizes the
various interlinkages and interdependencies of structure (e.g.
regulation in health care and occupational systems, cultural norms
and health beliefs), different types of agents (e.g. administration,
health practitioners, NGOs, social organizations and networks) and
individual action. It makes a substantial contribution to the social
theory debate and expands existing approaches to health seeking
with the concept of health seeking action. By providing a theoretical
explanation of change it illustrates the impact of current dynamics in
China.
The approach is applied to rural-to-urban migrants in Guangzhou,
China. Migrants are a new and constantly growing segment of the
population that has emerged in Chinese cities since the beginning of
the reform era. Their lack of access to health care has resulted in
various different alternative health seeking actions. A considerable
number of factors that influence health seeking are identified that
have not been considered in existing works.

Urban expansion and associated land-use changes increase both flood
hazards and exposure. This book provides a conceptual and methodo-
logical framework for the analysis of urban flood risk in dynamic and
complex settings, and proposes a comprehensive, system-oriented,
integrated approach for its assessment.
The risk assessment is carried out using case-specific indicators on the
sub-city scale in two municipalities of Santiago de Chile. Relevant
information is derived from various geodata sources, and together
with explorative scenarios, is used to estimate future risk develop-
ment. All data about hazard, elements at risk, and their vulnerability
are compiled to a GIS-based risk map to join the risk-relevant compo-
nents, to show their interrelations, and to provide a tool for
monitoring and evaluating their changes over time. Finally, previous
deficits in flood risk prevention and mitigation are outlined and
recommendations on risk reduction are made.

Durch den raschen Urbanisierungsprozess in Schwellen- und
Entwicklungsländern entstehen Gesundheitsprobleme in bisher
unbekanntem Ausmaß. Meist werden städtische Räume in diesen
Ländern vereinfachend als ausreichend versorgt beschrieben. Dieser
Sichtweise wird hier eine differenzierte Untersuchung des Zugangs
von unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen entgegengesetzt.
Aufbauend auf einer Analyse etablierter Konzepte der Zugangsfor-
schung wird ein erweitertes Konzept entwickelt: Zugang wird als
Produkt von Zugangsbarrieren und -anreizen in sechs Dimensionen
definiert. Das Konzept wird in sechs unterschiedlich strukturierten
Untersuchungsgebieten in Pune empirisch überprüft. Die Ergebnisse
der Studie lassen auf erhebliche Unterschiede im Zugang zu Gesund-

Durch den raschen Urbanisierungsprozess in Schwellen- und
Entwicklungsländern entstehen Gesundheitsprobleme in bisher
unbekanntem Ausmaß. Meist werden städtische Räume in diesen
Ländern vereinfachend als ausreichend versorgt beschrieben. Dieser
Sichtweise wird hier eine differenzierte Untersuchung des Zugangs
von unterschiedlichen Bevölkerungsgruppen entgegengesetzt.
Aufbauend auf einer Analyse etablierter Konzepte der Zugangsfor-
schung wird ein erweitertes Konzept entwickelt: Zugang wird als
Produkt von Zugangsbarrieren und -anreizen in sechs Dimensionen
definiert. Das Konzept wird in sechs unterschiedlich strukturierten
Untersuchungsgebieten in Pune empirisch überprüft. Die Ergebnisse
der Studie lassen auf erhebliche Unterschiede im Zugang zu Gesund-
heitsdienstleistungen verschiedener Bevölkerungsgruppen schließen:
Wesentliche Zugangsbarrieren entstehen durch die komplexe Anbie-
terstruktur im indischen Gesundheitssystem und die fehlende
Regulierung des Gesundheitswesens. Die Studie leistet zudem einen
konzeptionellen Beitrag im Bereich der interdisziplinären Zugangs-
forschung.
