NDS Disability at Work Conference 2016
Framing the Future
Monday, 30 May – Tuesday, 31 May 2016
National Convention Centre, Canberra
Welcome
Welcome to the 2016 Disability at Work Conference, ‘Framing the Future'
The challenge before us all is to boost employment opportunities for
Australians with disability. While success will require action by many
stakeholders, progress won’t happen unless the services which support
people with disability to find, prepare for and maintain employment are
sustainable and dynamic. With the expansion of the NDIS beyond its trial
phase and the development of a new national disability employment
framework, this is the right time to focus our minds on this challenge.
When fully implemented across Australia, the NDIS will double the resources
available to support people with disability. The Scheme’s insurance principles
entail an increased focus on early intervention and building the capacity and
independence of people with disability over time.
This should lead to increased investment and innovation in pathways to
employment and employment support. The scaling up of the Scheme from the
trial phase to full implementation commences in most states in July this year.
The Federal Department of Social Services is continuing to consult with
service providers, people with disability, employers and carers about designing
an employment assistance framework which should increase choice for people
with disability, allow scope for innovation by providers and improve
employment outcomes.
With a Federal election close, it will be timely to hear at the conference from
the new Assistant Minister for Disability Services, the Hon. Jane Prentice MP,
and from Shadow Minister for Disability Reform, the Hon. Jenny Macklin MP.
We want to see disability employment prominent on the policy agenda of both
major parties.
The next two days will also provide the opportunity for analysis of the May
Federal Budget. Service design and practice are also a strong focus of many
sessions at the conference.
The program has been structured to provide conference delegates with
opportunities to participate in discussion. We encourage you to share your
views and your own experiences of what works and doesn’t work in service
provision and to network with your colleagues.
While you are in Canberra, I hope you find time to enjoy the vibrant colours of
Autumn in the national capital. Canberra has a rich cultural life and hosts
significant art exhibitions and events, as well as many fine restaurants.
