Up Real Close With The Sportsmen

In order to keep competition fair, a long list of rules must

be followed to give up advan-tages that expensive racing products would give a car and driver. The rules are explicit, and on our web site.

Here are a few highlights. 1978 to 88 American made

rear wheel drive sedan, 2 or 4 door, no GT series. 108 inch wheelbase minimum. Origi-nal Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts. Carburetor 2 barrel model 4412 only. GM crate engine as specified can be used. OEM transmission, standard or automatic.

Weight distribution limited to 52% on left side with

driver. Roll cage required with other safety equipment. Glass, chrome and lights removed. Windshield Lexan or stock.

Ground clearance 7 1/2 inches. Rear spoiler of 60

x 5 inches allowed.

Specified Hoosier tires re-quired. 2 are impounded

after race for next week. This limits tire cost to no more than 2 new tires per race night.

See web for more. You can help by sponsoring a car.

Grand American Race Cars has been accumulating wins here in the Super Late Models for 13 straight

events. A bounty was placed on the brand by the track. On Friday the 27th in the Papa John’s 100 Blizzard

Series, Mike Garvey won in a chasis not made by GARC.

Garvey piloted his Port City car to victory and the $513 bonus. Car owner Tracy Goodson is more than a Port City car fan, he is also a dealer. They will all be back in 2 weeks.

A Helping Hand for Ronald McDonald

House Tonight, race fans can help the local Ronald McDonald House on Bayou Blvd...and you could win a prize basket that includes 10 passes to the

races, and other goodies. Chances are on sale at the booth near the front gate for a dollar, 6 for 5. It’s one of Marty White’s favorite charities.

Thompson Recovering Nicely After Late-Season Ilness

It happened overnight. One day last fall, perennial favorite Randy Thomp-son was up, walking around, enjoy-ing life. The next morning, the 33 year old woke up, incapable of leaving his bed. “I couldn’t sit up it hurt so bad,” Thompson said. “It lasted a month straight where I couldn’t even move.”

He’s thankful those days are long gone. After a scary few months in late 2011, Thompson’s steely eyes are focused back on driving. The three-time West Florida Coatings Sportsman class track champion (2007-09), and 2010 Super Stocks champ, looks for his first check-ered of the season tonight. “We want to get back to where we were, trying to dominate and win races here,” said Thompson, who currently sits sixth in points.

For a while, though, his mysterious illness had many wondering if Thomp-son would get behind a wheel again.“ My dad (Tim) thought I was allergic to racing,” he joked. This debilitating disease seemed to confound doctors the way Thompson confuses rival driv-ers on any given Friday night.

“I was getting ready go somewhere else,” he admitted — one local physi-cian finally diagnosed him with rheu-matoid arthritis. Simply put, it’s a long-term disease that leads to inflam-mation of the joints and tissues.“It was weird the way it hit me,” who had to take six pills daily as part of his recovery. “I guess that’s why doctors couldn’t figure it out. I was down for 2 months, without any work.” See our web site for the full Thompson Story.
