Medacity Mediterranean City ForumSpecial Edition on Green Cities 27th of November 2014 Cònsols Room

Modern cities around the world consume over half of the global electricity output, and

– with the tendency towards urbanization marching forward year on year – this trend

is set to continue, putting further pressure on electricity supplies and security. Innova-

tive, adaptable technologies and solutions for secure and versatile renewable energy

generation exist however, and the challenge facing researchers, urban-planners and

policy makers is how to scale-up successful projects and put them at the service of

the sustainable development of our cityscapes and urban environments. Solar energy

in particular has proved itself to be an adaptable, scalable solution. Having reached

grid parity in many markets, solar energy is not only a viable alternative; it is a cost-

efficient solution also. The Mediterranean, where natural resources abound, is uni-

quely placed to position itself at the forefront of this innovative approach.

This “Special Edition” session of the MEDACITY Forum, in the framework of the ECO

MEDA GREEN SUMMIT, will explore the integration of technologies for renewable

energy generation into Mediterranean urban environments, reflecting on the challen-

ges, opportunities and impacts for the region’s cities in terms of infrastructure, econo-

mics and image.

Mediterranean Tourism ForumSpecial Edition on Green Tourism 26th of November 2014 Daurat Room

The Meditour Forum will highlight, in this session, successful strategies companies can use to

make their tourism products more sustainable. The event will challenge businesses and go-

vernments to address their present travel policies, as well as demonstrating case studies and

success stories from around the region and internationally.

The creation of greener tourism is happening across the whole breadth of the industry, in tra-

vel management companies, airlines, tour operators, and marketing departments. Change is

being managed on a municipal level or by corporations themselves; the broader challenges

being successfully met in the overall greening of the sector.

Green tourism is one of several priority niches identified by the Euromed Invest project as a

strategic area of investment int he Euro Mediterranean region, with a view to promoting the

sustainable growth of the sector on the northern, southern and easter shores of the Mediterra-

nean sea.

EUROMED Invest is one of the main European programs aimed at stimulating private investment

The Mediterranean and his adjacent seas (Caspian Sea, Red Sea and Black Sea) although is not

always obvious, constitute an economic area of progressive Integration. The sectors of the environ-

mental management and energy, due to their nature to strategic regional and global scale, are two

hotbeds deserving of special attention on the part of the set of economic actors.

In contexts of high complexity and uncertainty, economic tools and competitive intelligence contri-

bute to improve the competitiveness of organizations and companies through the analysis of the

context, both “offensive” -of preparation compared to its competitors-, such as “defensive” - in the

field of the preservation of its competitiveness.
