Organisational updateFinance update:
With just four weeks of the financial year left to go, we want to thank Team DBTH for your hard work throughout the past 12 months, especially over the winter, and ask you all to continue to concentrate on achieving our financial goals, making best use of resources and working as efficiently as possible.
Through our combined efforts we are on target to achieve our control total of a deficit of £16.4 million. It’s vital that we continue to think about every penny that we spend as an organisation. Hitting our control total for this financial year will mean we will start in a better position as we head into
2018/19, which will in itself bring its own challenges. Read the full update here.
CQC Inspection feedback:
We completed our announced ‘Well Led’ CQC inspection in early January, which was the follow-on from the unannounced inspection which took place between 12 to 14 December 2017.
On behalf of the Board of Directors we want to extend a ‘thank you’ to all who were involved and for the time taken to help the inspectors, as well as to everyone for the effort that went into the preparation and collection of the information provided prior to these inspections by the CQC. The direction of the revised strategy and development of the governance structures were recognised, with acknowledgement of continued work in progress across the Trust.
The CQC feedback for ‘Well Led’ was also positive in respect of the improvements we have made in developing and providing our services. The inspection team have also wanted to share their thanks and comments that staff were open and willing to help throughout the process.
We expect to have a ‘factual accuracy’ review of the draft report content in mid-March 2018, with final report publication and ratings a few weeks after that.
First-time Professor of Surgery at the Trust:
I am happy to announce that the Trust has its first ever substantive Professor of Surgery. I do hope you will join me in congratulating Professor Lynda Wyld on this achievement.
Consultant Connect:
Patients are being saved an unnecessary trip to hospital thanks to the great work of our consultants as they discuss patient cases directly with local GPs. In Doncaster 328 calls from GP surgeries were received and 85 in Bassetlaw. Overall, 41% of these calls resulted in an avoided referral, a fantastic service for patients.
Preparing for Digital DBTH:
You may be aware that the Trust is planning to move to an entirely paperless patient record within the next few years. In order to ensure that this transition is as smooth as possible, our IT team want to understand what training requirements are needed by medical staff in order to achieve this ambition. Let us know here. Lunchtime meetings:
These are small meetings (of no more than six of us at one time) to provide the opportunity for you to raise suggestions, challenges and concerns.
Below is a list of dates and times across Doncaster and Bassetlaw. Please can you confirm your attendance at your meeting of choice with Angela O’Mara by calling 644153 or emailing a.o’[email protected]. If there is high demand I will endeavour to set up more at convenient times.

Update on the review of hospital services:
The Oversight and Assurance group, who commissioned the current review of hospital services, discussed, and signed off for publication, the Section 1b report at their meeting on Tuesday 30 January. The report:
• Lays out the methodology used in each of the three clinical working groups for each of the five services.
• Describes the key challenges that have been identified by clinicians in relation to the five services, some case studies that have been discussed and some key themes that have emerged in relation to these.
• Describes the main themes that have been received so far in feedback from patients and the public. We are continuing to receive feedback from patients and the public and this will continue to be fed into the development of proposals.
• Outlines the proposed approach to evaluation criteria for the Hospital Services Review. We have sought views from clinicians, system leaders, patients and the public, and people from seldom heard groups, to identify the priorities of each of these groups. The final evaluation criteria will be confirmed shortly.
The report is available here.
Update from the Local Maternity System board:
The Local Maternity System (LMS) board met at the end of January and had discussions around:
• Developments in perinatal mental health - Jason Rowlands who is supprting the mental health work stream in this area took members through a proposed way forward for improving care and outcomes for people in Doncaster, Rotherham & Sheffield – through a shared service model. All agreed with the approach and supported the bid for funding to the national team.
• An update on the NHS England submission and the comms and engagement around it, including a plain English version of the plan which will be used to explain the work to wider audiences and to encourage more mums to get involved.
• The wide-ranging engagement underway with clinical staff and the public on the hospital services review, which includes maternity and children’s services.
• An update from the Yorkshire and Humber LMS. More information on our LMS can be found here.
Health Select Committee visit:
In February, the Trust was visited, as a key partner in the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Accountable Care System, by the Health Select Committee to aid in their inquiry (see details here).
The Committee visited Doncaster Royal Infirmary to gain insight into integrated secondary/primary care system, including Consultant Connect and our Integrated Discharge service, which also included a tour of Stirling Ward.
A number of medical and clinical staff were also on hand to discuss innovations at the Trust and how our work can be shared both regionally and nationally.
