Parent Council News Our Parent Council meeting will be held on Monday, October 21st, 2019 at 4:30 pm in the Staff Room. All parents/guardians are welcome to join us. The meetings are a great opportunity for you to connect with other parents/guardians. It is also a great way to learn about your child’s school and to voice your thoughts and ideas to help make École Sacré-Coeur an even better place to be. We look forward to seeing you on the 21st!

Lunch / Before & After Program News École Sacré-Coeur Parent Council organizes many events and activities throughout the school year, which all contribute to our children’s school experience. A major activity of the Parent Council is the operation of the school’s Lunch Program. The Winnipeg School Division does not provide supervision of our children during the lunch hour, and without the Lunch Program, students would be required to go home for lunch. Parent Council hires supervisors and staff who supervise and assist children both in the lunchroom and outside in the schoolyard and purchase toys, games and equipment for playtime. Parent Council also hires a Bookkeeper who collects fees, issues receipts, and takes care of the payroll. All parents who have outstanding fees not paid during the 2018-2019 school year must do so in order to register their child for this year’s program. Parents will not be able to register their child if there is a previous outstanding balance. Please make arrangements for payment with either the Lunch Program Coordinator or the bookkeeper. For those parents who would like to register their child for the program, applications can be found in the school office. Please fill in the application and submit with your payment to the school office at your earliest convenience. The Lunch Program staff would like to invite parents/guardians to join their team for the 2019-2020 school year. Parents/guardians are welcome to come and help out daily or when available. Parents/guardians may choose to get paid or work off their child/children's lunch fees. For more information please contact Michelle the Lunch Program Coordinator at the following number #204-786-6247.

Bus Ridership All children must be safe while traveling in a school bus. The bus driver’s main job is to drive the bus and to ensure that each student is picked up and dropped off safely at his/her residence. Bus Ridership will take place on Friday, October 4th, 2019. Please review the following rules with your son/daughter: It is important to listen to your driver in case there are any special instructions for your bus ride.

• Sit quietly in your seat. • Speak quietly to other children near you. • Do not jump up and down, fight or tease other

passengers or make a lot of noise. These activities can bother your bus driver and he/she will not be able to give proper attention to driving.

Thanking you in advance for your support in this matter. Only by working together can we ensure that our children are safe while traveling on the school bus.

Personal Items Please oversee what your children are bringing to school. We would like to remind all families that toy weapons, games and personal objects should not be brought to school. Label all valuable items and articles of clothing. Every year, personal items such as iPods and game players go missing. Please note we do not reimburse for any losses. However, we do our best to retrieve them and generally find the missing article, but not always.

Parking Before and After School Teachers and parents have been witnessing clogged traffic on Furby Street before school. Our busses drop off and pick up our students on Furby Street in the morning and after school. They often have to wait for vehicles to move out of the way before they can get to their drop off/pick up spot. Please, if you have to park on Furby Street we ask that you go further up the street or on the other side. If possible, we would prefer you drop off your children on McDermot Avenue or Bannatyne Avenue to avoid the busses altogether. Thanking you in advance for your understanding and support.

We are happy to welcome SSCY’s fine motor project at École Sacré Coeur! They are working with some of our classrooms to strengthen and improve our students’ fine motor skills. Two Occupational Therapists bring exercises and activities for the entire class one day a week for five weeks that will directly target the fine motor needs of the students in the classroom.

Every Child Matters Monday, September 30th, École Sacré Coeur recognized “Every Child Matters”, also known as “Orange Shirt Day” to remember and honour survivors of residential schools. Our staff and students were invited to wear an orange shirt as a reminder of Phyllis Webstad’s experience as a little girl who had her orange shirt taken away from her on her first day of residential school. Classes participated in various activities and discussions to deepen our understanding of the history of residential schools, and as a part of our journey as we strive for reconciliation.

Counsellor's Corner Bonjour tout le monde ! Ici Monsieur Gautron votre conseiller en orientation scolaire! Greetings from your School Guidance Counsellor M Gautron! September is the month of friendship here at École Sacre-Coeur, we ask students to reflect on what it means to be a good friend. Our school `s virtues and values tree begins with elements of friendship, such as being caring, respectful, courteous, kind and helpful to name but a few. As we continue to reflect and learn about friendship, our tree continues to fill with our shared school values. Stay tuned for next months virtue; mindfulness... I also wanted to bring your attention to an important topic that can affect friendship and kindness in the cyber realm : Protecting Kids Online Helping kids stay safe while online is something many parents are concerned about. Yet, as a parent, it can be difficult to stay up to date with new technology and how to best protect your kids. ProtectKidsOnline.ca and cybertip.ca are here to help parents/guardians stay on top of the digital world their children are engaging in. Patrols

Welcome back for another great school year at Ecole Sacré-Coeur. As patrol supervisor, it is my pleasure to tell you a little about our patrols. To start the 2019-2020 school year, we have about 46 students on our patrol team. The patrols are made up of grades 5 & 6 students. Students who wish to join the patrols are asked to talk to the Patrol Supervisor. Please teach your children to cross the street where and when patrols are working. Encourage your children to respect student patrols and adult crossing guards. The patrols monitor and cross pedestrians at 2 locations (McDermot Avenue/Furby Street, McDermot

Avenue/ Lydia Street. The patrols are divided into 2 squads, each responsible to be on post for 1 month. The supervisor is on duty to ensure the patrols are being safe and responsible. Patrols meet in the morning at 8:00 and are on post at 8:05 – 8:20am. At lunch, patrols are on post from 11:25-11:35am and then again at 12:15 -12:25pm. After school, patrols are there at 3:00-3:10pm.

Patrols are privileged to many rewards and recognition for their continued effort and commitment. Patrols are invited 3-4 times a year, to free movies at Silver City Polo Park, or to sporting events in the city and have an end of year activity in acknowledgement of their hard work. In the spring of 2020, grade 4s will be invited to train for patrolling and to take the place of the grade 6s leaving. Patrols need to dress appropriately for the weather condition while on posts. Respectfully, Mme Emmons – Patrol Supervisor

Winnipeg Regional Health Authority The Public Health Nurse will provide the first dose of HPV to our Grade 6 and 8 students on November 8th, 2019. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school office. Please check your child’s backpack for further details.
