3. Member Economic Participation
4. Autonomy and Independence
5. Education, Training, and Information
6. Co-operation among Co-operatives
7. Concern for Community
MEC is a successful Canadian consumer co-operative; our
members like the fact that we arent about prots were all
about providing our shareholders with the best value on the
gear we buy while still being leaders in environmental and
social responsibility.
But co-operatives do many things, in many countries.
Co-operatives in developing countries play a crucial role in
improving their members lives. For example, in Banikoara,
Benin, West Africa small producers (peasant farmers, livestock
raisers, and artisans) established a rural development
co-operative, ACOODER, which has made a large difference
to life in Banikoara.
ACOODER opened a pharmaceutical store that sells generic
medicine at wholesale prices. They also started a central store
for consumer goods and building materials. In addition, they
built water reservoirs, upgraded the local roads, hired a surgeon
for the local clinic, and encouraged education by giving a
motorbike to each student who successfully completed the
baccalaureate exam. All of these benets are nanced by
ACOODERs core business: operating its consumer stores, coffee
bars, and gas stations.
Check out the website of the International Co-operative Alliance
under development for more examples of why you can be
proud to be part of the co-operative movement.
SARA GOLLING
Its a Co-operative Effort!Acronyms and nicknames abound. Mountain Equipment
Co-operative becomes MEC pronounced either emmy-sea
or meck and many people lose sight of a fundamental truth
about this organization: we are a co-operative.
What exactly is a co-operative? The short answer: a group of
people who have pooled their resources to achieve something
they could not achieve as individuals. (MEC has developed
into quite a large group. Since 1971, over two million of us have
chosen to purchase a share to become members.) A more
complete denition has been developed by the International
Co-operative Alliance: a co-operative is an autonomous
association of persons united voluntarily to meet their common
economic, social, and cultural needs and aspirations through a
jointly-owned and democratically-controlled enterprise.
Jointly owned? Yes, you and all the other members of MEC own
MEC. The $5 share each of us bought to join, plus any other
shares we have acquired in our accounts by buying gear at MEC,
represent the resources we have pooled to create MEC. Your
shares also represent the value of your ownership in MEC.
Democratically controlled? Yes, members have the right to
vote in elections of MECs Board of Directors. You choose the
members who govern MEC.
United voluntarily? Yes, no one is forced to join MEC; there are
other places to buy gear.
Co-operatives are based on values of self-help, self-responsibility,
democracy, equality, equity, and solidarity. They uphold the
ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility, and
caring for others.
To put all this into practice, co-operatives are guided by seven
principles adopted by the international co-operative community:

NEWS FROM YOUR BOARD
Call for NominationsAre you passionate about MEC?
Would you like to contribute
to its future direction? Do you
have experience in nance,
co-operative businesses,
governance, organizational
development, or social and
environmental responsibility
that could benet MEC?
Do you have spare time (30
to 40 hours per month) to
give to the Co-op? Are you an
outdoor enthusiast who relishes
self-propelled adventures and
believes in a healthy planet?
If you answered yes to some
or all of these questions, you
might consider standing for
election to MECs Board of
Directors. The Board benets
from having new directors who
are committed to providing
strong and dynamic leadership
to Canadas largest retail
co-operative.
For election details and
eligibility requirements, see
www.mec.ca/nominations
or call 604.707.3367.
The nomination deadline for
the 2006 Board of Directors
Election is noon Pacic Time,
Friday, October 7, 2005.
For example, weve discussed holding
sponsored hikes, ski trips, and events to get
members outdoors and primed for follow-up
re-side chats. These sessions would enable
members to share stories of MECs past,
consider the challenges and opportunities we
face today, and dream aloud about possibilities
for the future. Members ideas and insights
would be fed into our database along with the
other information weve collected.
We want to examine the future with all its
challenges and possibilities, so we can chart a
distinctive path forward that is uniquely ours.
We want to ensure that MEC values drive our
future, so we are able to embrace exciting
and high-quality products and services at
fair prices, and deepen our commitment to
social and environmental responsibility. All the
while, we need to ensure the nancial health
of the Co-op to enable us to continue to serve
members and follow our desired path forward.
To register your interest in the MEC Futures
Project, please email your contact information
to [email protected]. We want members to be
involved in this adventure from the start and we
sincerely believe that it will be a worthwhile trip.
COLIN K. CAMPBELL
Chair, MEC Futures Committee
Charting MECs FutureThings are looking good for MEC. The new
three-year strategic plan is rolling out. Sales
are strong. A Social Compliance Manager has
been hired to strengthen the Ethical Sourcing
Program. The Community Involvement Program
has been improved. And new stores have been
opened to better serve MEC members.
The Board of Directors is proud of these
accomplishments. We recognize, however,
that we must not take our present success for
granted. We need to look beyond the short
term to ensure that MEC remains a relevant
and prosperous outdoor retail co-operative
that provides its unique brand of leadership in
an ever-changing world. To meet these goals,
your directors recently established a Futures
Committee. The committee is planning the
MEC Futures Project, which will be ofcially
launched early in 2006.
To prepare for the project launch, we are
exploring ways to understand future trends,
investigating different methods of conducting
future studies, and reviewing previous research
done by MEC. Most important, were also
determining the best way to capture members
ideas your ideas about MECs future.

Were lucky here in the Kootenays. Skiing is a lifestyle; its part of our day-to-day lives. In the city, people meet in a pub after work,
or sit in traf c, or whatever. We meet in the mountains, rip it up for
a couple of hours, and head home.

Why soft shells?
In a word versatility. Soft shells offer
a unique combination of breathability,
durability, stretchiness, and weather
resistance. The result? Garments that
deliver the greatest amount of comfort
across a broad range of conditions.
A single soft shell garment can replace
an inner/insulating layer and outer hard
shell layer. Theres no need to peel
when hot or layer when cold soft
shells smooth out the spikes and dips
in body temperature due to vigorous
exercise or weather changes.
However, if you are planning an
extended expedition, or anticipating
exceptionally wet conditions, you
should pack your waterproof-
breathable shell jacket as well. The
bottom line? Soft shells help you stay
comfortable, so you stay focused
and motivated. Wherever, whenever,
in almost any weather.
A jacket is a jacket, right? Wrong. A great jacket offers theideal combination of t, fabric, and features designed to meet yourspeci c needs.

Snowshoe selection guide
Saras been there
If you snowshoe downhill as well as uphill, pick a snowshoe with enough otation in front of your toes, or the front of the snowshoe will dive as you descend. If youll be in soft deep powder, get larger snowshoes than recommended for your size, or youll be post-holing instead of oating.

The day after the competition, I was having fun
climbing with my husband and
our friends. The ice can be a
little funky since its farmed.
Plus where I was climbing,
it was a little steeper than it
looked. All in all it was a fun
lead though.

When youre climbing in cooler weather, low-cut synthetic or down booties are great for camp use, and double as foot warmers over your climbing shoes when belaying or hanging around the crag. The low cut makes them easy to put on. The booties are light and compact enough to toss in your pack.
