PLUMBING-HEATING-COOLING CONTRACTORS — NATIONAL ASSOCIATION

EDUCATIONAL FOUNDATION

Are we answering the call? In my three years as Chairperson of this treasured Foundation, our profession has been challenged by evolving technologies, new regulations, growing environmental concerns, and a crucial workforce shortage. To continue our reputation as the go-to resource for education and training in the p-h-c industry, we’ve had to meet those needs with exceptionally strong tools and resources. Have we been successful? Can we measure our success? Have we been that “measure of change” this industry so critically needs?

The answer is found within these pages. As you’ll discover, we’ve attracted more young people to this profession, enrolled more apprentices in our programs, trained more techs, strengthened the skills of more managers, and generated more revenue.

Indeed, those accomplishments are strong indicators of our success, but, for me, the real results are beyond measure. The real power of our efforts comes from:• Hearing scholarship recipients share

stories about the life-changing impact our awards this year had on their education.

• Watching volunteers develop crucial workforce initiatives that are attracting skilled workers to our industry … and then hearing them share their efforts to help influence key decision-makers on Capitol Hill.

• Realizing that our support of Team USA at the Community Plumbing Challenge gives young people in our industry pride in their work, knowing they’re part of life-saving solutions to problematic sanitary conditions in developing parts of our world.

The list goes on. As a member of the Board of Directors when this Foundation was formed nearly 30 years ago, I’ve witnessed first-hand the impact that comes from the generosity of passionate people. As Warren Buffett said, “Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.” Our success today, in part, is a result of our past.

Equally important are those paying it forward. Planting the seeds for tomorrow are those who helped us exceed our goal of $155,000 in this year’s Invest in Your Future campaign. Planting the seeds for tomorrow are generous contractors, manufacturers, and industry partners who contributed to our Endowment Fund, including the newest members to our Board of Governors: Alice and Eddie Miller, Gerry Kennedy, Steve and Isabella Schaefer, and Patrick Wallner. Welcome! Planting the seeds for tomorrow are people like you. Thank you for playing your own part in the history of this Foundation.

With great pride, I confidently pass the Chairperson baton to Craig Lewis of REC Industries, knowing you will continue to plant the seeds that will meet the needs of this changing industry … and that will provide the shade for tomorrow.

Sincerely,

Measure of Change

Dear Foundation Friends, Donors, and PHCC Members:

LETTER FROM THE CHAIRPERSON

ROGER PEUGEOT Roger the Plumber. Overland Park, Kansas Foundation Chairperson

Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors—National Association Educational Foundation 3

Measure of Success: It’s in getting young people excited about their careers. It’s in preparing them for a profession crucial to the safety and comfort of our communities and the protection of our environment. It’s in building businesses that employ best people and best practices. It’s in planting the seeds that will secure the future of our industry. It’s possible because of you. Thank you.

2015-2016 FOUNDATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS

The Educational Foundation is measuring up to big change in workforce development … developing programs to reach and recruit potential workers, properly prepare them for lifelong jobs in an advancing industry, and maintain their skills throughout their careers. Just this year, we:

Launched an online Pre-Apprenticeship Course to give prospective plumbing and HVAC workers an opportunity to learn about the day-to-day aspects of the trades before beginning a longer-term apprentice program and eventual career.

“[This course] is a GREAT tool for not only those applying for jobs who say they have a certain level of expertise but for anyone actually considering entering the apprenticeship program; it gives a great overview of what they should expect to learn in apprenticeship. … I cannot imagine a better tool to be available for our members.”

– Laurie C. CriglerL & D Associates, Inc.

Co-Hosted a Workforce Development Roundtable on Capitol Hill in April, meeting face-to-face with key mem-bers of the House Career & Technical Education Caucus to raise awareness about the industry’s crucial workforce shortage and share proactive solutions our members have implemented to fill some of the many jobs and career opportunities available.

Financially supported a U.S. team of four young plumbing and engineering professionals who competed at the 2015 Community Plumbing Challenge in Nashik, India. The team edged out competitors from three other nations, but – more importantly – they created an innovative plumbing solution to poor sanitation conditions for students of a school with high needs and few resources.

Sponsored the SkillsUSA plumbing contest and assisted with the HVAC competition. Held in Louisville, Kentucky, in June, 44 young plumbers-in-training and 48 future HVAC technicians competed for the title of the nation’s best. Together with Reliance Worldwide Corporation, we also provided a plumbing project in the event’s new “Makers Space” area, which encouraged spectators to experiment with a variety of trades through small hands-on projects.

Hosted the increasingly popular Plumbing and HVAC Apprentice Contests at CONNECT 2015, with a maximum capacity of 12 competitors in the HVAC contest and 20 apprentices in the plumbing challenge, all vying to take home top prizes and bragging rights.

Presented two Soft Skills Webinars for apprentices and technicians. Ideal for apprentice classes and company meetings, these presentations help hone vital skills such as customer service, communication, manners, appearance, even basic finance knowledge.

2015-2016 FOUNDATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Fast TracTo reach an underserved market of enlightened contractors who want to ensure that entry-level technicians have enough knowledge to perform their duties safely and effectively, the Foundation is redeveloping the Fast Trac program. Combined with on-the-job training, the program is designed to get a plumbing or HVAC technician up and running in 12-18 months. (It is not designed to be a substitute for apprenticeship training.) Content and course development should be completed by early 2017.

Busy apprentices embrace learning at their own pace!

This was a monumental year for the Educational Foundation’s Plumbing and HVACR Apprentice eLearning Program, which provides employers and apprentices with an alternative training solution to classroom-based instruction for a four-year apprentice program.

Each track comprises four courses (one per year for a four-year apprenticeship) and follows the same curriculum as the Foundation’s textbooks. This year, the Foundation added more math skills courseware, mechanical and electrical simulation software for HVAC, and valuable course-related videos from manufacturers and industry groups to emphasize the material in the textbooks.

Business Management Education

P-h-c professionals continue to rely on the Foundation’s programs to help them in ways beyond measure … improving their leadership skills, boosting their productivity, standardizing processes, keeping them ahead of the pack on new rules and regulations. Take a look at what we’ve accomplished this year:

Once again, sold out our powerful Essentials of Project Management course, which included major modifications this year to accommodate the changing needs of our audience. This year, we included free pre-class Excel training through online training provider Udemy.com and introduced a new instructor from the University of South Florida for the finance section.

Published 12 issues our Personnel e.bulletin, helping contractors manage their employees with timely articles on incentives, employment law changes, balancing a multigenerational workplace, mentoring, and more.

Sponsored an exceptional line-up of educational programs, contractor-led sessions, and service and repair-focused seminars at CONNECT 2015 in Hollywood, Florida. This year, we employed crowdsourcing and RFPs to develop more than 20 focused education sessions for CONNECT 2016.

Presented 21 webinars on topics such as the new overtime rules, getting more client calls from Google, web strategies, OSHA’s new confined spaces standards, and more. Not only have more than 1,100 attendees tuned into these free, one-hour sessions, but countless others have downloaded them later for on-demand viewing.

Delivered timely, relevant education on a local level via our Seminar Series, sponsored by Kohler Co. Just this year, we worked with chapters and companies across the country to deliver 40 seminars to more than 1,200 contractors and their employees.

2015-2016 FOUNDATION ACCOMPLISHMENTS

1,100 + attendees tuned IN to 21 webinars

Spread highly effective management training to 200 foremen through our popular Creating Super Foremen workshops, held across the country.

In addition, we hosted consecutive workshops – Creating Super Foremen and Smarter Management – at Viega’s Training Facility in Nashua, New Hampshire. Offering these sessions back-to-back maximized training time, minimized travel costs, and generated a priceless exchange of ideas among managers, business owners, and other professionals on topics such as managing change, workforce development, time and workload management, and technology.

Endowment Fund The PHCC Educational Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, with the majority of our monetary support provided by more than 100 contractors, manufacturers, and industry partners whose generous gifts helped to establish the Foundation’s Endowment Fund. These major donors form the core membership of our committees and together serve as our Board of Governors. This year, we welcomed to the Board of Governors family:

Alice and Eddie Miller of Miller Mechanical Contractors & Engineers, LLC in Marietta, Georgia.

Gerry Kennedy of Springfield, Virginia.

Steve and Isabella Schaefer of Schaefer Mechanical in Westminster, Maryland.

Patrick Wallner, Wallner Plumbing Company in Redding, California.

This team runs a successful company specializing in providing water, waste, and gas systems solutions for multifamily and mixed-use construction projects. Eddie’s father, Joseph “Herb” Miller, is also a member of the Board of Governors.

Gerry served as COO of the Foundation from 1997 to 2010 before stepping into the role of Executive Vice President of the PHCC – National Association. He retired from PHCC last year.

Steve has worked in the plumbing profession since 1973 and established Schaefer Mechanical in 1995. He has served as a PHCC National Board member and is a past President, Board member, and Trade Show Chair of PHCC of Maryland.

Patrick is a second-generation plumbing contractor and the president of his family’s business. He has served PHCC on the national, state, and local levels since 1992 and will be PHCC National Association’s 2016-2017 President.

Is that Roger the Plumber in AARP Bulletin?

The May 2016 issue of AARP Bulletin revealed that sometimes “the people who help get us through life don’t tell us everything.” So it went straight to the source – those everyday experts – to get the scoop behind things that matter. Sharing a plumber’s secrets was none other than our Educational Foundation’s very own Roger Peugeot!
