    Back to School Update 2017

SRJC selected recently selected SunPower to deploy a fully-integrated solar and battery storage project on the Petaluma and Santa Rosa campuses. SunPower will install the Helix Carport featuring their high-efficiency solar panels that maximize energy production, a simplified electrical and cable management system to secure and conceal wires, and monitoring software that communicates real-time insights for better energy management. By adding software-driven battery storage, the District is expected to see significant demand charge savings. The Petaluma campus construction will begin this Fall and will feature the Helix Carport installation in parking lots 3 and 4, totaling 1.3 megawatts. The Santa Rosa campus will see construction in the Summer of 2018 and will feature three Helix Carport installations, one each at the Emeritus and Bech parking lots, as well as a garage-top system at Zumwalt, totaling about 2.6 megawatts. These systems will be coupled with a 1.3-megawatt (2 megawatt-hour) battery storage unit. Thanks to Robert Ethington, David Liebman and the District Sustainability Committee for their continued leadership, support and advocacy for a more sustainable SRJC.

  • Geothermal Energy ProjectGuttman-Blavoet Engineers, with offices in San Francisco and Santa Rosa, have been hired to design a geothermal field under the existing Bailey track and football field. The system will connect to four buildings, including Forsyth, Garcia, Analy and the new Burbank Theater, which will soon begin modernization. The timeline for this being driven by the Burbank Theater project, which will be completed in late 2018. The new system is highly efficient, and is funded as one of the many sustainability projects supported by the Governing Board.

Barnett Replacement BuildingYou may have noticed large equipment on campus this week! Miller Pacific Engineering Group will be performing five-soil borings over a two-and-a-half-day period, excavated with track mounted drilling equipment. The borings will extend 20 to 50-feet below the existing ground surface or at least 5-feet into firm materials. The results of the testing will be compiled into an investigation report to aid in the design and construction of the proposed Barnett Hall replacement project. The timeline for this project has not been set, but soils testing is required for design.

The report will include a summary of the existing subsurface conditions, a summary of the pertinent geologic hazards and associated mitigation measures, site grading recommendations; and foundation and seismic design criteria.Red circles indicate boring sites

  • Facilities ProjectsAn important component of the Measure H plan, is the use of bond funding for maintenance and repair, IT and Media Services projects. A later bond update will include the many IT and Media Services department projects. In the meantime, we wanted to share a few ongoing Facilities projects that were managed by our capable team, including Javier Rodriguez-Aguilera, Hank Lankford, Eric Oden, Solomon Ghebretensae, Ralph Gause, Guadalupe Cabrera-Mendia and Linda Close. These individuals work behind the scenes and are not always credited for their hard work, but without them, these projects, as well as the large capital project, would come to a stop. They work closely with and support our hard working Project Managers: Scott Connors, Heather Chierici, Serafin Fernandez, and Daniel Mendez-Cisneros.

Burbank Swing Space + MoveA temporary swing space shop on Elliott Avenue is under construction. The Theater Scene shop

  • will move to 708 Elliott during construction of the Burbank Theater. Faculty, Staff and Students working in the shop will be located to 708, and existing classrooms will be moved to the new Lark temporary buildings, adjacent to Sipher baseball field. Faculty are in the process of packing for the move so that work can begin on the modernization project. PETALUMA SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC PROJECT

Site logistics for the Petaluma photovoltaic project are being coordinated, and installation of a temporary construction fence in parking lot 3 (adjacent to the gym)

will begin on October 11th. Lot 4 (adjacent to Building 600) will be replaced later. Construction planning was coordinated with the Petaluma administration and will not

affect LumaFest, which is on Saturday, October 14th. Construction will start in late October with the Photovoltaic system expected to be installed by Winter. PG&E savings are expected to be significant. Thank you to site manager Gary Watts for his facilities support on this campus and specific work coordinating this project. Track Resurfacing

The Bailey field track in Santa Rosa will be resurfaced after the Geothermal project is completed. More news on this will follow, as construction plans are developed.

  • Burdo Culinary Center Wine Room and Abatement ProjectThe failure of a HVAC compressor led to a major cleanup of the Burdo Culinary Centers Wine Room, and the the subsequent replacement of the HVAC compressor was done with minimal damage. Special thanks to Doug Kuula and Robin McHale with Environmental, Health and Safety (EH&S) for their quick assessment of the situation, saving the beautiful custom cabinetry in the room. All work was timed to be completed as quickly as possible and at times of the least amount of disruption to Burdo faculty and staff.

Top Row Photos: Before repair of the HVAC Compressor a corroded plug caused damage to the top and face of the custom millwork surfaces.

  • Bottom Row Photos: The custom cabinetry is sealed and sanitized. The room walls are painted with anti-microbial paint.
