School is finally out for the summer! Graduates are looking forward to their first summer trip
out of highschool and before college. Children are excited about the family vacation to the
beach, mountain, or desert, and parents are looking for ways to keep their families engaged
during the warm summer months! One of the most important rules of traveling safe is to plan
ahead. Here are a few tips and tricks to making your summer memorable in the best ways
possible! Just remember the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s three “Ps”: Proactive,
protected, and prepared!
BE PROACTIVE…
•Learn about your destination.
•Think about your health status.
BE PROTECTED…
◦Use sunscreen and insect repellent as

Traveling is fun but it also poses many challenges
and dangers for all involved. Domestic travel
requires different planning steps than foreign travel.
The travel destination will also make a huge
difference in the way preparations are made.
Domestic Travel
Airlines recommend arriving at the airport 2 hours
early for a domestic flight.
Limit the valuables you travel with and pack them
in carry-on luggage.
Have a plan if something does go wrong (i.e.
meeting points if separated, where to go if you are
evacuated, what to do in the case of a terrorist
attack).
Watch the news. Steer clear of cities and other
areas experiencing active protests or are hotspots for
negative political or social activity and do not
participate if you encounter it.
Bring adequate supplies of any prescription
medications.
Check with the TSA for current recommendations,
security precautions and requirements.
Foreign Travel
Work with your unit’s foreign travel POC. Many of
the requirements for foreign travel are completed
through an online process now.
Make sure your passport, other IDs and medical
documentation are up to date and with you. Make
copies!
Prepare for an emergency – know where the
embassy is, how to get there & how to dial
emergency services or the embassy.
BE PREPARED…
•Pack smart.
•Plan ahead for illnesses or injuries
during your trip.

Pack light so you can move more quickly and have a free hand when you need it.
Use covered luggage tags to avoid casual observation of your identity and nationality.
Learn about acceptable methods of payment abroad (types of currency, exchange rates,
use of credit cards, etc).
Learn about local laws and customs.
Traveling safely takes planning, take the time to do it right!
