On March 15th, Millstadt Baptist Church was excited to honor Harvey Reichert with a surprise birthday party. It was Harvey’s 80th birthday. The party was immediately after church with a lunch being served of hot dogs and
chilli and of course a beautiful cake. All the church was invited and some special friends of Harvey’s. Everyone had a great time.

McDonald’s on the Corner
Senior coffee is now $.69 per cup. I’m sure the increase in the price from $.60 to $.69 has something to do with the cost of building a new McDonald’s in Millstadt and building a new one in Waterloo at a new location by the Dairy Queen and Schnuck’s. Demolition started in early April and already local businesses are concerned about the impact it will

This issue marks the 56th issue of the Senior Talk Newsletter!
We are very proud of our Newsletter, but most of all we are appreciative of the hard work and dedication of our senior editors, Don Mueller, Jerry Schmitz and
Marlou Eckert, who has proof-read and edited each edition. The Newsletter has proven to be a wonderful tool for conveying a broad range of information and increasing awareness about our Nutrition and Transportation program, upcoming events and developments around the town. We are grateful for your support and dedication; I recognize that this would not be possible without your help. I am very grateful for our volunteers and appreciate all they do for us.
I spoke with Township Supervisor Randy Eckert and he has assured me that he is working very seriously to find a parking solution for our Center.
Today I heard that McDonalds will not be building in Millstadt. This was just another matter that divided the Millstadt people. Many were excited that Big Mac was coming while others were upset. There seems to be a pattern here. Take for instance the Tower Project, there are many that want to preserve the landmark while others feel it should be torn down. We are a strong opinionated community and as individuals we will stand up for what we believe in. Let’s just put in a Round a Bout!
Have a great May and gets lots of Vitamin D Sunshine.

Memorial Day Observance Decoration Day or Memorial Day is a Federal public holiday in the United States. Memorial Day is usually observed on the last Monday of May. Memorial Day 2015 is on May 25. This day is set aside to celebrate and honor U.S. men and women who have died serving their country in the military. Memorial Day originally began to honor and celebrate Union Soldiers who died during the Civil War.
Fruit Cocktail Cake Doris Steiger brought this cake to a recent meeting of the Millstadt Sister Cities. Willis had just a few crumbs left to enjoy the next day. 1 box yellow cake mix 1 ½ cups coconut 1 16 oz. can fruit cocktail, undrained 2 eggs ½ c. brown sugar Combine the cake mix, fruit cocktail with juice, 1 cup coconut, and eggs in large mixing bowl. Blend, then beat for two minutes. Pour batter into greased 9 by 13 inch pan. Sprinkle batter evenly with remaining ½ cup coconut and the ½ cup brown sugar. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes.

have on them. Already parking at the Community Center has become an issue and the increase in traffic from the McDonald’s will make accessing the Community Center difficult. The Senior Bus will provide transportation to the center for any senior in the area. We hope more seniors will ride the bus and reduce the number of cars at the Center. We will have to wait to see the final impact of having a McDonald’s in Millstadt. Some things will be good. More jobs in the area, having an iced coffee from McDonald’s on a hot afternoon, more tax revenue for the Village. Let’s hope the good will balance some of the negative factors.

Gloria Boehm will be sadly missed here at the Millstadt Senior Center. We were accustomed to seeing her smiling face every Wednesday during

always shared her books and magazines with “the girls” at the Center and we all knew where “her spot” was at the lunch table. We love and will miss you Gloria! She you on the other side!

Social Security Column GET INTO THE ACT WITH OLDER AMERICANS MONTH By Tanya Peterson Social Security District Manager in East St. Louis, IL
In May, we recognize Older Americans Month to acknowledge older Americans and their contributions to the nation. More than 40 million people in the United States are 65 or older. By 2035, the U.S. Census Bureau projects this number will double, which makes improving the quality of life for older Americans even more important as we look to the future. It is Social Security’s priority to provide a safety net for older Americans. You can learn more about Social Security at www.socialsecurity.gov. The main reason Social Security was established 80 years ago was to help older Americans. For many older Americans, Social Security benefits are their only source of retirement income. Social Security payments continue for life and are adjusted to keep pace with inflation. The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) estimates that these benefits help keep 35 percent of older Americans out of poverty. A great tool for people of all ages is the my Social Security account. With a personalized my Social Security account, you can:
Get an estimate of future benefits, if you still work;
Get an instant letter with proof of current benefits; and Manage your benefits. Visit www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount and join the millions of people who have already created accounts to help them plan for retirement. This May also marks the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act. Congress passed the Act in 1965 in response to a lack of community social services for older persons. Medicare, in effect since July 1, 1966, will also celebrate its 50th anniversary soon. Medicare provides health insurance to more than 42 million Americans age 65 and older. If you aren’t familiar with the four parts of Medicare, they are: Part A (hospital insurance): Hospital insurance helps pay for inpatient care in a hospital or skilled nursing facility (following a hospital stay), some home health care, and hospice care. Part B (medical insurance): Medical insurance helps pay for doctors’ services and many other medical services and supplies that hospital insurance doesn’t cover. Part C (Medicare Advantage plans): If you have Medicare Parts A and B, you can join a Medicare Advantage plan. Private companies offer Medicare Advantage plans approved by Medicare. These plans generally help you pay the medical costs not covered by Medicare Part A and B. Part D (prescription drug coverage): Prescription drug coverage helps pay for medications doctors prescribe for treatment. To learn more about applying for Medicare, read our publication Applying For Medicare Only—Before You Decide. To learn more about Social Security, read Understanding the Benefits. Both are available at www.socialsecurity.gov/pubs.
Social Security Column GIVE THE GIFT OF TIME AND LOVE THIS MOTHER’S DAY By Tanya Peterson Social Security District Manager in East St. Louis, IL
What do you plan to get for Mom this Mother’s Day? If she’s like most Americans, she probably feels time-constrained and the hours she spends with family and friends are precious. So, in addition to giving her flowers or a card, give her a gift she’ll really appreciate: the chance to spend more time with the ones she loves! While spending time with your mom on Sunday, May 10, you can help her quickly and easily sign up for a free, online my Social Security account. You can do it from home, which means less time waiting in line, and more time doing the things you want to do together. Signing up for a my Social Security account will give Mom the tools she needs to stay on top of her future Social Security benefits. When she signs up at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount, she can do a number of things. First and foremost, she can plan for her retirement. Mom can never start planning for retirement too early. If she isn’t already retired, she can view her Social Security Statement, verify her earnings records, and find out what benefits she can expect to receive at age 62, her full retirement age, or at age 70. Is Mom thinking of retiring at a different age? It’s easy to get instant, personalized benefit estimates, too. Just escort Mom to the Retirement Estimator, where she can plug in different scenarios to find out how much she can expect in Social Security benefits. She can also plug in different future wage amounts to see how her future benefits can be affected by when she retires and how much she contributes. Visit the Retirement Estimator at www.socialsecurity.gov/estimator. As she continues to work and earn wages, she can use her my Social Security account to keep track of and verify her annual earnings. If Mom has already retired and receives Social Security benefits, she can use her account to: Get an instant letter with proof of her benefits; Change her address and phone number; and Start or change direct deposit of her benefit payment. The time saved by using our convenient and secure online services is priceless. Helping Mom sign up for a my Social Security account at www.socialsecurity.gov/myaccount is a great,

Paul Sanders, the son of Millstadt Township Senior Center worker Larry Sanders and Rose Sanders, has received the prestigious Missouri
State Award of Distinction for Leadership for his work with the state’s Department of Social Services. The award goes to a Missouri state employee “who exemplified and promoted outstanding
leadership qualities and behaviors.”
Paul Sanders, 38, lives in Dupo with his wife, Julie, and children Connor and Allison. He was nominated for the award by Traci Williams, the Social Services Manager at the Department of Social Services Family Support Division on Chouteau Avenue in downtown St. Louis. “It was a total surprise,” Sanders said. “For 2014 there were only seven recipients for the entire state and I was one of those seven.” Sanders has been with the Department of Social Services, Family Support Division for 12 years. The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville graduate began his career as an Eligibility Specialist at the downtown St. Louis office and was later promoted to supervisor, From there he moved to the Arnold, Mo., office and has been a supervisor there for more than three years. Sanders recently was promoted to Program Development Specialist and does work with all offices in the St. Louis region. In Williams’ award nomination letter, she talked about Sanders’ diligent work with an overworked staff at the South County office that had been “swamped with a backlog of case actions and reviving a staff that had been overwhelmed.” She credited him for being able to communicate with the staff, coaching and counseling them through a difficult period while also trusting their

Porch Sale Raises $619 The weather was brisk with temperatures in the 40’s on April 4 for the porch sale at the Community Center of donated items from the community. The Firemen held their annual BBQ next door and shoppers endured the cool spring weather, porch sale and opportunity to enjoy ribs, pork steaks, brats and delicious bake goods. In addition shoppers witnessed the demolition of the former Mertz’s Ford building located on the corner of Washington and Jefferson. We would like to thank everyone who donated items for the porch sale and also everyone who took home an item or two. We also want to thank Eileen Doerr, Janet Mueller, Orville Mueller, George and Denise Blaha, Marlou Eckert, Kathy Schaeffer, Randy Eckert, Jim Eckert and Charlie Worden for their help in ensuring the porch sale was a success. The $619 raised from the sale will be used to support the senior meal program at the Center.
own abilities to get things done. “Mr. Sanders knew that one of the keys to turning around the confusion and chaos was to open communication,” Williams said. “So he set right away at learning his staff, discovering their strengths and creating an atmosphere that was orderly. Within days of his arrival there was a noticeable change in the workplace.

15 SENIOR NEWS MAY 2015
I AM A SENIOR CITIZEN I’m the life of the party … even when it lasts until 8 p.m. I’m very good at opening child-proof caps with a hammer. I’m usually interested in going home before I get to where I’m going I’m good on a trip for at least an hour without my aspirin, beano, antacid … I’m the first one to find the bathroom wherever I go. I’m awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. I’m smiling all the time because I don’t hear a word you are saying. I’m very good at telling stories … over and over and over and over. I’m aware that other people’s grandchildren are not as bright as mine. I’m so cared for: long-term care, eye care, private care, dental care … I’m not grouchy; I just don’t like traffic, waiting, crowds, children, politicians … I’m positive I did housework correctly before my mate retired. I’m sure everything I can’t find is in a secure place. I’m wrinkled, saggy and lumpy, and that’s just my left leg. I’m having trouble remembering simple words like … I’m now spending more time with my pillows than with my mate. I’m realizing that aging is not for sissies. I’m anti-everything now: anti-fat, anti-smoke, anti-noise, anti-inflammatory … I’m walking more (to the bathroom) and enjoying it less. I’m going to reveal what goes on behind closed doors … absolutely nothing!, I’m sure they are making adults much younger these days. I’m in the initial stage of my golden years: SS, CD’s, IRA’s AARP … I’m wondering … if you’re only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150? I’m supporting all movements now … by eating bran, prunes and raisins. I’m a walking storeroom of facts … I’ve just lost the storeroom.
I’M A SENIOR CITIZEN AND I THINK I AM HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE !!!!
West End Bar & Grill On Monday April 20, West End Bar & Grill will provided a meal of pasta con broccoli with chicken, salad and roll. We would like to thank all the customers at West End on April 20 who enjoyed good food, and helped raise $342.00 for the Sandra M. Bereitschaft Foundation, supporting the Meals on Wheels program. West End donated 12% of their sales from food and beverages to the foundation.
Fund Raisers Are Important Meals costs from the IGA and West End are $5.25 per meal. This doesn’t sound like much, after all we know food prices have increased and this includes an entrée, vegetable or salad, bread and dessert. Not to mention the cost to prepare and deliver the meal to the Community Center. Then add in the cost of a carton of milk, $0.42 cents, coffee $27.00 per month, divided plates are .09 each, and plates for home delivered meals are .28 each, napkins, cups, ice tea, lemonade, transportation costs, labor costs and that $4.50 meal delivered to your door actually costs over $10.00. Now compare the meal at the Senior Center to any fast food restaurant and what would you get for $4.50? The last time meal prices increased was in October 2012. With the help of our most recent run of fund raisers, we hope to delay the next price increase of meals into 2016. The volunteers, donations, and participants at our fund raisers ALL show the generosity of our community and their commitment to the Millstadt Senior Center. Thank-you!

FOOD PANTRY NEWS
The hours on the fourth Saturday at the pantry have changed. Starting in March, the pantry will be
open from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. To help those wanting to donate to the food
pantry, we have added hours on the first Saturday every month for deliveries. From 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. a volunteer will be at the pantry to
accept your donations. And as always, food may be left in the barrel at the Village Hall during their
normal business hours. If you would like to donate, but don’t know what
to buy, below are a few suggestions for March: Instant potatoes (all varieties), icing, cereal, instant pasta and instant rice side dishes, ramen noodles,
mac and cheese, dish washing liquid, laundry detergent, and dryer sheets
We cannot say “Thank You” enough to everyone that continually supports the needs of the Food
Pantry. The generosity of this community is seen so often in so many ways. The Food Pantry cannot
do what it does without your help. Please know that you are appreciated in all that you do no
matter how big or small.
Watercolor Lessons Watercolor lessons will be offered to seniors in the community starting May 18, at 10:00 am. Additional lessons are scheduled for May 26, June 1, and June 15
all classes start at 10:00 am and will end at 11:00 am. A $10.00 materials fee will be charged to each painter and each lesson will cost each painter $7.50.
Bunco Event Darleen Sandheinrich and her seasoned helpers raised $945 for the Senior Center at the March 25 Bunco party held at St. James Parish. Darleen along with Shirley Rinck and the “Bunco Babes” did their magic with dice rolling, attendance prizes and desserts to make the night a successful fund raiser and fun for all those who came to play bunco. The Senior Center would like to thank everyone who played Bunco, donated prizes or desserts or helped in any way to make this a very successful fundraiser. Watch for the next Bunco event that will take place next fall, at the St. James Parish Center.

WRITER’S GUIDELINES One does not have to be a professional writer in order to submit articles to Senior Talk. All it takes is the desire to share your thoughts or feelings with the rest of us. Tell us about what matters to you. Share your his-tory, your fears, and your triumphs. There is a “Brag Corner,” where you can tell others about your new car, or how your grandchild just graduated from Harvard, or about your prize-winning roses. Give us your recipe for deviled eggs or tell us how you stay married to the same person for 50 years! It is best to keep the length of the article to no more than 500 words. We reserve the right to edit all materials. Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number and email address, if you have one. Articles can be dropped off at the center, mailed, or emailed to [email protected]
Clothing Donations Remember your clothing items donated to the collection box at the IGA parking lot will add to the proceeds IGA collects and donates to the Senior Center. Proceeds from the clothing collection box at IGA along with funds from aluminum cans collected at the Community Center help maintain the Meals on Wheels program for Millstadt Township. With the help of your donations 20,000 meals were served to Seniors in Millstadt Township last year.

MEAL PRICES The suggested donated cost of the noon meal served daily at the Millstadt Senior Center is $4.50 per meal. The average actual cost per meal is over $10.00. In addition to the amount paid to IGA or West End Bar and Grill for each meal, we must cover the cost of serving containers, cups, napkins, transportation, beverages and salaries. Over 400 meals are served or delivered weekly to seniors in Millstadt Township, Freeburg and Smithton. Without the support of the many volunteers and donations from the community the meal cost for each senior would be considerably higher than the $4.50 suggested donation. Thanks to all our volunteers and all those who donate or contribute cups, dessert plates and other items to the Senior Center!

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.
Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
