On Dec 3 we are looking forward to working with the Millstadt Chamber of Commerce. During recycling, Township Trustee Fuzzy Eckert collects aluminum cans to donate to Senior Services. If possible, could you separate the cans from the other materials? In the upcoming year we have June and July openings for volunteer groups to help at recycling. Call Supervisor Denise Blaha (618)476-1207 to sign up or with any questions. As always, the large appliance drop-off is still available behind the Township Office at 820 South Jefferson. Millstadt Police Department Annual Toy & Food Drive

Dear Millstadt Township Senior Services, The Millstadt Police Department is preparing to help bring holiday cheer to local families in need. They will be holding their 17 annual toy and food drive from November 25th - December 16th. New toys, non-perishable foods, and non-food items (ie…soap, toothpaste, toilet paper) may be dropped off at the Millstadt Police Department, Millstadt Village Hall, Millstadt Community Center, Millstadt IGA, Smokin K’s BBQ & More, & Millstadt Dollar General. Monetary donations are also accepted. Anyone with questions should contact the police department at 476-7250.

Social Security Social Security recipients will need all the discounts on meals and whatever else they can get because the raise they will be receiving next year isn’t much. The average monthly check will go up by about $5.00 for the 60 million plus people who receive checks. But about one-third of 56 million people who get Medicare, nearly all of whom also are on Social Security, will see their premiums rise by even more. Even for the remainder, who may still see a modest increase in Medicare costs, deductibles are set to rise by an amount well above the boost to their checks. It could be worse for today’s senior citizens. According to a report earlier this year from its trustees, those 49 or younger may never get what they are owed as the program will only be able to pay about three quarters of projected benefits.

Persimmon Seed Winter Prediction This coming winter may have more snow than average according to local persimmon seeds. Persimmons are a native Ozarks fruit tree and folklore has it that the shape of the tiny seedling can predict the coming winter conditions. This year a sampling of seeds indicated a larger percentage of seeds with a spoon shape, which means the winter will bring snowy conditions and a snow shovel should be kept handy. If the seeds were a fork shape, little snow would fall and winter would be mild. Last year the seeds were knife shaped indicating a winter with cold cutting temperatures. Let’s see how close the persimmon seeds are in predicting how the weather will be for the winter of 2016-2017.

Senior Discounts Some discounts vary by store or restaurant location. Remember to ask for your Senior Discount. Steak & Shake-10% discount on Monday and Tuesday’s (50+); Taco Bell-5% off and free beverage (65+); KFC-free small drink (55+); Culvers-10% off (60+).

DID YOU SIGN IN?

Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

The Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) is a supplemental

food source for seniors age 60 and older who fall within 130% of the federal poverty guidelines—seniors may participate in this program while also receiving food assistance via food pantries, meals on wheels, and/or SNAP (food stamps). The Foodbank partners with an organization that elects to administer the CSFP boxes to qualified seniors. Millstadt Township Senior Services would receive a once a month free delivery of free boxes to be distributed to the seniors signed up for the program; each box contains about 16 shelf stable items, plus cheese. The program does require some administrative work including, application sign up and verification of seniors, maintenance of sign-in sheets, and re-certification of participants that may be conducted verbally every 6 months. If you are interested in signing up for this program and fit into the income guidelines below, please contact Patty Evansco at 46-3731 for an appointment.

WRITER’S GUIDELINES One does not have to be a professional writer in order to submit articles to Senior Talk. All it takes is the desire to share your thoughts or feelings with the rest of us. Tell us about what matters to you. Share your his-tory, your fears, and your triumphs. There is a “Brag Corner,” where you can tell others about your new car, or how your grandchild just graduated from Harvard, or about your prize-winning roses. Give us your recipe for deviled eggs or tell us how you stay married to the same person for 50 years! It is best to keep the length of the article to no more than 500 words. We reserve the right to edit all materials. Be sure to include your name, address, and telephone number and email address, if you have one. Articles can be dropped off at the center, mailed, or emailed to [email protected]

SHIP Corner Millstadt Township Senior Center is a sponsoring agency for Senior Health Insurance Program help and we recently received our 2016 updated Manual. During the coming months I will be sharing with you some information that I feel is important and informational. Organization and Administration of the SHIP Program: SHIP was initiated in July of 1988 by the Illinois Department of Insurance in response to the needs of Illinois’ senior citizens regarding their health insurance. In April of 2013, under Executive Order by the Governor, SHIP was transferred to the Illinois Department on Aging. The organizational structure of SHIP consists of: • The Illinois Department on Aging, which provides initial training, continuing education and ongoing support of SHIP counselors; • The sponsoring organization (Millstadt Township Senior Services), which provides coordinators, office space and office support services; • The coordinator (Patty Evansco), who is responsible for the administrative aspects of the SHIP program, which include publicizing SHIP services, recruiting volunteers, scheduling counseling sessions and responding to counselors’ needs; and • Counselor Patty Evansco meets with clients individually to provide objective information about health insurance, advocacy assistance, or referral if appropriate. The state is divided geographically into four separate SHIP regions: Cook County, Northern Illinois, Central Illinois and Southern Illinois. Within each region, counselors are organized in to units that serve a specific geographic area, usually designated by counties.

Do you shop on Amazon? Now there is a new version of the company's website – smile.amazon.com – the company will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to charity. Customers pick their charity through the new website and there are almost one million to choose from, including Sandra Marie Bereitschaft Foundation (supports Millstadt, Freeburg and Smithton Meals on Wheels program). There is no cap on the amount Amazon will donate and almost every physical product sold by the company is eligible, which means tens of millions of items. Digital goods are not included, but that may come in the future. Everything else about the Amazon online shopping experience stays the same, including the shopping cart, wish lists and shipping options. The prices will also be the same, so these donations will suck some of the profit out of each sale Amazon makes through the program. Please be sure to sign up, shop and add “Sandra Marie Bereitschaft Foundation” as your designated charity. Thank you. http://smile.amazon.com

Did You know? The saying “God Bless You” when you sneeze originated in the Middle Ages? People thought that when someone

sneezed the soul left the body for a minute, and would be snatched by the devil if someone didn’t say “God Bless You.” Those who say it today may be doing it because it has become a reflex, or to be polite. Accept the kind gesture and kwitchurbitchin.

SENIOR NEWS 15 DECEMBER 2016

The Millstadt Township Senior Wii Bowling League held their quarterly banquet on November 30, 2016 at the Senior Center with a homemade breakfast of egg casserole, biscuits and gravy and doughnuts. Rick Coleman, Chairman of the League said that the season had went by quickly and that everyone enjoyed great times bowling and cheering each other on. This produced many great scores and much success in picking up splits. He has noticed lots of progress and confident that 2017 will show even more improvements. Everyone wants to bowl a high game, but for him it is coming in and bowling and having a good time. Rick thanked everyone at the Banquet for spending Wednesday mornings bowling. Rick had a nice surprise of gifts for all the bowlers Although it is a task to keep track of

all the scores he looks forward to coming each week and works hard to keep them accurate. Rick wished everyone a Merry Christmas and looks forward to seeing them in January. Thank you Rick

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them. Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.
