MCCOPA NEWS November/December 2016 Monthly Meeting On November 1, MCCOPA hosted speaker Kim Stanford, MCC’s Program Director & Occupational Ther- apy Assistant. Kim spoke to us about Office Ergonomics which addresses adapting the work environment to the individual in order to reduce injuries & improve morale & productivity. About a third of work injuries are musculo- skeletal disorders & soft tissue injuries resulting from repetitive movements & overuse. Common diagnoses such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Quervain’s tendonitis & back injuries can be prevented or alleviated by address- ing the ergonomics of your workspace. Kim recommended reducing awkward or static pos- tures, repetition, force, & pressure on soft tissues by us- ing wrist rests, an ergonomic mouse, pencils grips, etc. Adjust your chair to a height where your legs create a right angle and your feet are flat on the floor. Elbows should also be kept at right angles when typing or writ- ing. Adjust the height of the monitor to encourage good posture and keep your wrists in a neutral posi- tion. When picking up heavy items, bend your legs and lift with your glutes and quads instead of straining your lower back. Keep your back aligned and not curved forward when bending down. Finally, Kim gave us many stretches to use throughout the day to reduce strain & tension, promote mobility, & prevent injuries. Additionally, members discussed the many giving opportunities we have during the season, such as the Thanksgiving Basket Fundraiser for the MCC Food Pantry, and the Christmas Wish List project, which is in coordination with the Support & Empowerment Pro- gram (SEP) office. MCCOPA donated 4 baskets to the Food Pantry & agreed to help purchase Christmas gifts for a needy, single-parent household. MCCOPA NEWSNovember/December 2016

Monthly Meeting On November 1, MCCOPA hosted speaker Kim

Stanford, MCC’s Program Director & Occupational Ther-

apy Assistant. Kim spoke to us about Office Ergonomics

which addresses adapting the work environment to the

individual in order to reduce injuries & improve morale &

productivity. About a third of work injuries are musculo-

skeletal disorders & soft tissue injuries resulting from

repetitive movements & overuse. Common diagnoses

such as carpal tunnel syndrome, Quervain’s tendonitis &

back injuries can be prevented or alleviated by address-

ing the ergonomics of your workspace.

Kim recommended reducing awkward or static pos-

tures, repetition, force, & pressure on soft tissues by us-

ing wrist rests, an ergonomic mouse, pencils grips, etc.

Adjust your chair to a height where your legs create a

right angle and your feet are flat on the floor. Elbows

should also be kept at right angles when typing or writ-

ing. Adjust the height of the monitor to encourage

good posture and keep your wrists in a neutral posi-

tion. When picking up heavy items, bend your legs

and lift with your glutes and quads instead of straining

your lower back. Keep your back aligned and not

curved forward when bending down. Finally, Kim gave

us many stretches to use throughout the day to reduce

strain & tension, promote mobility, & prevent injuries.

Additionally, members discussed the many giving

opportunities we have during the season, such as the

Thanksgiving Basket Fundraiser for the MCC Food

Pantry, and the Christmas Wish List project, which is in

coordination with the Support & Empowerment Pro-

gram (SEP) office. MCCOPA donated 4 baskets to the

Food Pantry & agreed to help purchase Christmas gifts

for a needy, single-parent household.

Holiday Bazaar/Bake Sale

Nov. 14-16

MCCOPA’s annual Holiday Bazaar and Bake Sale fundraiser was

very successful again this year. Many beautiful and delicious

items were crafted and donated by our members to raise money

for student scholarships and community projects.

This year, we were able to raise $1,080.05! Many thanks to the

Fundraising Committee for organizing this successful event and

to the members who donated their time providing items to sell

and attending the bazaar to assist with sales.

Great work, Everyone!

MCCOPA Christmas Party!

A wonderful time was had by all at the annual Christmas party. Everyone brought deli-

cious finger foods to eat and got to pick a present when their ticket number was called.

Thanks to the committees and individuals who all made this such a special occasion!

Donations

In addition to helping one of our students with

part of our emergency funds, MCCOPA chose to

donate Christmas gifts to a needy, single-parent

household for the Christmas Wish List project.

MCCOPA members went Christmas shopping for

the six children and worked together to make one

family’s Christmas a lot brighter. Thank you

MCCOPA for your generosity, not only during

Christmastime, but throughout the year!

Merry Christmas,

MCCOPA!!!
