The Transitioning Youth Life & Employability Skills Training Pro-gram began its services on July 3, 2006 at the Training Source. The 2006 participants will attend for the next eight-weeks. The Transi-tioning Youth Life & Employability Skills Training Program has pro-vided individuals with developmen-tal disabilities the opportunity to complete an intensive skills train-ing course that will bridge the transition from school to the workforce and the skills, knowl-edge, and attitudes necessary to compete in the job market under the instruction of Linda Stro-man and Desmond Mackall.

Monday through Thursday, the participants in the program incorporate life and work skills behaviors needed to obtain em-ployment and advance on the job. On Fridays, the participants con-duct job search and career coun-seling activities with Angela Gra-ham.

On July 7, 2006 Diana Jackson, Disability Navigator, ar-ranged at the PG Career Net One-Stop for all the MCC’s par-ticipants to have orientation and registration in order to secure job opportunities. Participants were able to login on the Maryland com-puter system to track and locate employment opportunities. Ms. Jackson and her staff made them-selves available to all MCC’s par-ticipants.

On July 18, 2006, Vanessa Antrum from Developmental Disabilities Administration spon-sored the Work Incentives & So-cial Security Training for the fami-lies and participants of the pro-gram. Greg Hudgins, from Inde-pendence Now, shared valuable information on how individual’s Social Security benefits will be af-fected when the students begin working in the community.

On July 21, 2006 Chris-tine Hall from the Greenbelt Marriott arranged for the partici-pants to have a tour and speak to department heads about career opportunities in the hotel field. MCC is thankful to the Greenbelt

Marriott for all their hospitality and for providing breakfast and lunch to our participants.

The employer partnerships are an intergrial part of this pro-gram. As an Employer Partner, Greenbelt Marriott, CVS Phar-macy, NW Works, Federal Highway Administration, and Helping Hands have agreed to one or all of the following commit-ments:

• Tour of their company

• Mock interviews with the youths

• Guest Speakers

• Hire a graduating youth

Maryland Community Con-nection is proud that the following participants have dedicated them-selves to this program: EvaMarie Anthony, Lolita DiCarlo, Sean Douglas, Kevin Gayle, Brian Greene, Everett Kegler, Ter-rell Rawles, Charles Schultz, Dane Thomas, and Ebony Walton.
