FROM THE PRESIDENT...
“Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.”
—RALPH WALDO EMERSON
We are thankful each day to you for your enthusiastic participation in Maryland Hall
and our mission. Earlier this year, we created a new tag line for Maryland Hall, “art
for all.” Throughout all of the programs and activities highlighted in this catalog you
can see our mission to deliver “art for all” at work every day.
For this winter/spring catalog, we have added more highlights about our upcoming
activities and shared a story about our outreach program. We have limited the class
descriptions and ask you to go to our web site to view all of the details about our
classes. With the majority of class registrations taking place online, we think it makes
sense to save money on printing and create a catalog that more fully highlights all of
the diverse activities Maryland Hall has to offer our community.
I invite you to take a class, attend a performance, make a donation and enjoy all the
benefits of Maryland Hall membership. Our web site has new activities that enable
you and other community members to be educated and enriched through the arts. I
hope to see you at Maryland Hall soon and thank you for sharing our enthusiasm for
the arts.
Linnell Bowen, MHCA President

OUTREACH PROGRAMSOver the past five years, Maryland Hall’s Outreach
programs have grown in size and scope. “What began
as a varied assortment of activities, with an after-school
program here and a free performance there, has grown
into a carefully-planned series of ongoing activities,” says
Emily Garvin, MHCA’s Director of Programs. “We now
have a very robust series of activities throughout the year
to engage audiences, particularly underserved students,
in the arts.”
Maryland Hall’s Outreach Program includes the following:
★ Scholarships distributed to over 75 students each
year so they can take MHCA arts classes for free or
at reduced rates at Maryland Hall.
★ Between 40-50 after-school and summer activities for
underserved students from community organizations
ranging from the Annapolis Gardens and Admiral
Oaks Boys and Girls Clubs to Bates Middle School
Hispanic students. These programs, which are called
ArtReach, include hands-on arts workshops, tours
and community art projects.
★ Free performances through our partnership
with World Artists Experiences and our summer
concert series.
★ Class trips to Maryland Hall for school show
performances for local schools whose students
can’t afford the fees for class trips.
★ Our free annual Open House each spring that
highlights the diversity of classes, artists and arts
organizations that are housed at Maryland Hall.
Earlier this year Maryland Hall adopted a new tag line—art for all—that highlights our mission as a
community arts center. To deliver art for all to our community, Maryland Hall is expanding audiences
and creating new opportunities for community members to be involved and inspired by the arts.

“Ensuring the arts are accessible to all community
members is the primary goal of our Outreach program,”
adds Garvin. “These programs are completely
funded through generous donations from individuals,
corporations and foundations and without this support
they couldn’t take place. As a community-based
organization, providing accessible arts opportunities is a
vital part of our mission.”
ARTISTS CONNECTING WITH COMMUNITY If you’ve visited the first floor of Maryland Hall recently,
you will see the work of an organization called Urban
Walls Brazil. The brainchild of local art lover, Roberta
Pardo, Urban Walls Brazil uses murals and workshops to
create an exchange
between cultures.
Pardo brought
several Brazilian
artists to Annapolis
in the fall to create
murals throughout
the Annapolis
Design District.
While here, the
artists also spent
several days at
Maryland Hall on a
number of community-based projects.
The artists spent a Saturday morning painting the first
floor hallway, creating vibrant, colorful scenes that
dramatically changed the look and feel of the space.
“The area they painted was drab-colored cinderblock,”
says Garvin. “It’s now a colorful, vibrant, inspiring
space.” The artists also spent several days in workshops
with students from our Outreach Program. During
the workshops, the Brazilian artists talked about their
background, how they became artists, the tradition of
graffiti, demonstrated painting techniques, and then
created a themed mural with the students. “It was a great
opportunity for these students to work alongside with
professionals and learn to express themselves through
art,” says Garvin.

Young PatronsEXPANDED AUDIENCESReaching new audiences is also part of delivering art
for all. Our ongoing classes, workshops and outreach
programs help introduce the arts to young audiences.
However, according to the National Endowment for the
Arts, dwindling arts audiences are a threat to the future
of the arts. Maryland Hall is embarking on several new
initiatives—with more to come—to bring new audiences
to the arts and to Maryland Hall specifically.
In an effort to connect and engage a younger audience
to Maryland Hall, a Young Patron Member program was
launched in 2014. It currently has more than 50 members
and is growing each month. This group of young
professionals (age 21-40) have hosted wine tasting events
at Maryland Hall and happy hours out in the community
to engage and connect young patron members.
“We found that twenty and thirtysomethings were not
well represented at Maryland Hall or at our events,”
says Donna Anderson, VP, Marketing and Development.
“By creating a Young Patron Member group we are
introducing this group to the arts, engaging them in
philanthropy and providing networking opportunities.
We hope to see this group double in size by next
year and help Maryland Hall
connect the arts with this
important audience.”
Maryland Hall’s partnership
with Rams Head over the
past two seasons is also
another opportunity to bring
new audiences to Maryland
Hall. Rams Head performances held at Maryland Hall
bring new and diverse performers to our stage that
complement our other performances. From Michael
Bolton and the Indigo Girls to Al Jarreau and Martin
Short, these Rams Head shows have brought new people
to Maryland Hall including local patrons and those from
Baltimore and Washington, DC, many from have never
been to our venue. "We look forward to many more
initiatives to expand our audience," says Garvin.
We hope to see this group double in size by next year.

LUMA Theatre Tuesday, April 12, 2016 | 7:30pm
LUMA Theater is an exhilarating light spectacle that captures the audiences’ imaginations by using the
dark as the canvas and light as the brush to create colorful illusions by combining rhythmic gymnastics,
dance, magic, puppetry, and physics with well-coordinated motion. Blending various physical disciplines
with hi-tech luminous objects, LUMA creates a ‘TechnoCircus’ that is born in the shadows and has
audiences sitting on the edge of their seats. The viewer experiences artistic depictions of natural, artificial
and metaphysical light. Fireflies dance, shooting starts flash across a darkened stage, screen savers
undulate, carnival rides spin and EKG monitors pulse the heartbeat of the body electric.

The Pace of My ConsiderationMarch 3 - April 9, 2016 | Maryland HallOpening Reception: Thursday, March 10 | 5:30-7pm
Maryland Hall is excited to be partnering with Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) on a Spring 2016
exhibition titled, The Pace of My Consideration, showcasing the work and creative process of the late
Donald Cook. Cook was an artist, writer, poet, teacher and scholar who served on the faculty in the Arts
Education MFA at MICA until his passing in 2010. He was a popular instructor at Maryland Hall for many
years in the 1990s and early 2000.
The exhibit is curated by Jen Melvin, Curatorial Practice MFA Candidate at MICA. The Curatorial Practice
program is the first MFA of its kind in the country that prepares students to push boundaries of the
curator’s role by creating exhibitions in both traditional and nontraditional venues and connecting the
often-present gap between the artist, art and the community.
Melvin connected with Linda Reeves, Kathy Keller and Laurie Nolan who are part of the Don Cook Art
Legacy Project. Formed in 2011, the project is dedicated to the exhibition, study and preservation of
the remarkable art and writing of Don Cook. The Pace of My Consideration focuses on the curator’s
exploration and excavation of the contents of a storage unit in Annapolis that housed Cook’s artwork and
ephemera. The Pace of My Consideration will feature Cook’s artwork alongside his numerous journals and
personal possessions exhibited in a manner that allows the visitor to become part of the investigation.

The Trumpy Boatyard was part of the rich nautical history of Annapolis, MD, from 1947 to 1974. Maryland Hall’s Director
of Exhibitions Sigrid Trumpy, granddaughter of founder John Trumpy, Sr., will curate this exhibition about the artistry
and craft of Trumpy Yachts. Through models, photographs, artifacts, vintage signage and original drawings, the exhibit
will follow the boat-building process from the small, hand-carved wooden model that was traditionally the first step in
the process to detailed drawings, lofting, framing and planking. To bring the boat-building process to life, the exhibit
will include a lofting of a Trumpy boat laid out on the exhibit floor, and will highlight the skilled craftsman who built
Trumpy boats.

Maryland Hall is excited to welcome four new instructors to our roster of artists teaching classes: Livia Fiorio, Laura Switkes, Nick Barnes and Neil Harpe.
Livia Fiorio New instructor Livia Fiorio joins the Maryland Hall faculty to teach several new classes for young children. “I have been a working artist and teacher in the area for over 5 years,” she says. “Due to my time in the Peace Corps, my love of travel, and passion to explore, I have a very unique and positive outlook that is very present in my art.”
She will teach the following new classes: Art and Crafts for Young Children (3-5 years) on Saturday mornings in February; Everyday Art (3-5 years) on Saturday mornings in April; and Expressive Painting (6-8 years) on Saturday mornings in February.
Laura Switkes Laura is a master potter who graduated Summa Cum Laude from Bowie State University with a degree in Art Education. She also holds a masters equivalency in Ceramics. She was nominated in 2011 for career art teacher of the year from Maryland Art Education Association.
Laura got her start in the world of clay soon after graduating high school when she apprenticed in a NYC pottery where she got a solid education learning all aspects of the potters trade.
She maintains her potters studio at her home in Annapolis and sells her work privately.
Laura will teach ceramics for adults including two sections of a new class called Creating Functional Clay from a Slab beginning in late January, one on Tuesday nights and another on Thursday mornings.

The Campaign for Maryland HallThe Campaign for Maryland Hall, an $18 million investment to
modernize and expand Maryland Hall for the Creative Arts (MHCA),
is underway.
More than 36 years ago, Maryland Hall was founded by community
visionaries – educators, artists and other community leaders – devoted
to bringing the visual and performing arts together in one location,
the recently-vacated 1932 Annapolis High School. Since that time,
Maryland Hall has grown into the area’s arts leader.
Since its founding, MHCA has enthusiastically and responsibly met the
changing needs of an ever-expanding arts community. The Campaign
for Maryland Hall is a phased project – starting with the $2 million
transformation of the former auditorium into a concert hall completed
in the summer of 2015 – that brings performer and audience upgrades,
new education and performance spaces, and new indoor and outdoor
areas. Improved and new creative opportunities will engage more
people to meet the needs of our ever-changing world.
The Campaign for Maryland Hall continues the work begun so many
years ago by founding visionaries who seized the opportunity to make
the arts a vital part of our community. MHCA makes our region a
better place to live, work and raise a family.
Maryland Hall is on an exciting journey! You can join us by contributing
to The Campaign for Maryland Hall today, online at marylandhall.org
or call the campaign office 410-263-65544 ext. 31.

The American Primitive Letterpress
Workshop SeriesDates TBA
Introduction to Letterpress is a 4-hour session that involves students in the hands-on process of designing, typesetting, and printing their own cards, flyers, and small posters by traditional letterpress methods using vintage wood and metal type and a classic flatbed galley-proof printing press.
Workshop projects include printing up to a dozen 3½”x 2” business or calling cards using hand-set metal type and ornaments; up to a half-dozen 3½”x 5” or 5”x 7” greeting cards using wood or metal type and/or ornaments; or up to three 8½”x 11” small posters/flyers using wood or metal type and/or ornaments. Participants should come with some idea of what they would like to print as their project, keeping in mind the time limitations of the workshop. In lieu of an original project idea, participants can typeset and print projects needed for the studio: type specimen alphabet sheets, type case labels, signage, etc. Students may sign up for one workshop or, for complex projects that could require more than 4 hours to complete, two or three workshops.
