Topeka man charged Jefferson County Attorney Josh Ney on Feb. 13 filed a com-plaint charging Shawn Michael Sparks, Topeka, with burglary, a Level 7 non-person felony, theft, a Level 9 non-person felony, and criminal trespass, a Class B non-person misdemeanor. Sparks is accused in part of entering a fifth-wheel camper trailer without authorization with the intent to commit a theft and subsequently obtain-ing unauthorized control over the trailer with the intent of permanently depriving the owner of its “possession, use or benefit.” He also is accused of coming onto the property located at 4373 39th Street knowing he was not authorized or privileged to do so. The alleged crimes are said to have occurred Feb. 12. Sparks made his first ap-pearance in Jefferson County District Court the same day the complaint was filed. Magistrate Judge Dennis L. Reiling was on the bench and appointed Atchi-son attorney Robert Campbell to represent him. The state was represented at the proceeding by Jonathan Ehrlich with the Office of the County Attorney. Arrested by the Jefferson County Sheriff ’s Office, Sparks was booked into the jail at the Law Enforcement Center in Os-kaloosa at 7:10 p.m. Feb. 12 on suspicion of criminal trespass and attempted burglary. He was 36 at the time of his arrest. Sparks’ bond, a cash or com-mercial surety bond, has been set at $5,000.
Battle of Mine Creek next Lecompton topic “The Battle of Mine Creek: Civil War Brutality” is the title of the presentation by Dr. Carl Graves, historian and educa-tor, when he presents the next program in the Bleeding Kansas series at Constitution Hall in Lecompton. The program will be held starting at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. This is Graves’ third appear-ance in the program now in its 23rd year. The speaker resides in Law-rence and holds a master’s de-gree in U.S. history from Kansas University and a doctorate from Harvard. Graves taught university and junior college classes, had a three-year stint teaching middle school history at Topeka’s Shaw-nee Country Day (the precursor to Topeka Collegiate), and for 29 years was a high school history instructor at Pembroke Hill School in Kansas City, where he created a Bleeding Kansas-Missouri mini-course. Although retired, he contin-ues to educate the public as an instructor of history for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
She enjoyed the piece I appreciated your article in the Feb. 7 issue, “Ambushed trying to free slaves.” I was one of the people who got there too late to get a seat — very interesting.
