Corporate responsibility and your business

There are various definitions when it comes to corporate responsibility. However, broadly speaking it covers the ways in which organisations manage their core business to add social, environmental and economic value in order to produce a positive, sustainable impact for both society and for the business itself. Corporate responsibility covers a wide range of issues, including health and safety in the workplace.

We can provide a solution to your health and safety needs and we will do the work for you.

The HSE’s mission ensures that risks to health and safety of workers are properly controlled, along with improvements to management systems to reduce injuries and ill health. It is their belief that effective management of health and safety:

n is vital to employee well-being

n has a role to play in enhancing the reputation of businesses and helping them achieve high-performance teams

n is financially beneficial to any business

Whatever industry we work in, we all have a fundamental duty to ensure we operate in a safe and healthy manner to ourselves and our co-workers.

Large organisations are under increasing pressure to reduce their carbon footprint and will look to their suppliers to assist them in achieving this. The greatest driver being the threat of tax on carbon, which in turn will be driven down the supply chain. Therefore, in the future, companies with a lesser carbon footprint will have a competitive advantage when tendering for contracts from the public sector or larger organisations. MBHS can assist with new environmental waste management legislation such as REACH, WEEE etc.

We do the work for you

11 requirements of the Health and Safety Executive (HSE)

The McCormack Benson Health, Safety and Environment Offer

So, what makes us different from the rest?At McCormack Benson Health, Safety and Environment (MBHS), we specialise in supporting small to medium businesses to manage the introduction of health and safety and comply with HSE requirements.

In our experience, many companies are aware that as a minimum requirement in their business, they need to comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 (HSAWA74). Without the resource, knowledge or understanding in place, this can be extremely difficult to implement and manage.

This is where MBHS can help. We are different to other health and safety consultancies as we place great emphasis on understanding your business and what you need, with the minimum of fuss and disruption.

As a management outsourced consultancy, we can save you money too. We won’t tie you into lengthy contracts but work alongside you as if we are part of your company, eliminating the need for you to employ a health and safety manager. We will ensure that your company complies with health and safety legislation, whatever area of business or industry you operate in, leaving you to focus on running your business.

We are hands on and will undertake to manage your health and safety issues for you.

Uniquely and most importantly:

n Unlike other health, safety & environmental consultancies our service agreement is a 28 day termination contract, with no lengthy tie-ins

n We are flexible and will tailor-make our service offer to meet your needs and requirements, whatever they may be

n We pledge to protect our clients in whatever capacity, whether it is against the HSE, EHO, insurers, or even your own employees

As a consultancy, we know that you may not contact us until you have a health and safety issue or problem. This is why we operate nationally, so we can be on site as and when you need us. In times of emergency, just pick up the phone and we will provide instant support. We offer a wide range of services including:

n Complete health and safety outsourcing

n Health and safety polices

n Method statements

n Fire risk assessments

n Environmental waste procedures

n HACCP Hazard analysis complete control point

n CDM – Construction, design and management

n Health and safety training; e-learning and site specific

n Electrical PAT and fixed wire testing

n Disability Discrimination Act access audits

Your concerns are our challenges and we will resolve these for you efficiently and effectively, to prevent legal action and with minimal costs to your company.

For more detailed information about the services and training we can provide, call us on Freephone 0800 068 0188 or visit our website at www.mb-hs.com

Don’t forget we are here to help and we will do the work for you.

Whatever area of business or industry you operate in; there are eleven mandatory aspects of health and safety that your company must comply with (www.hse.gov.uk/business/must-do.htm). As a consultancy with advisors fully qualified to NEBOSH, MBHS can manage your health and safety, giving you complete peace of mind that your company is meeting these requirements:

Examples of Risk Assessments (see point 5 above)

1. Register your business

2. Take out Employer’s Liability Compulsory Insurance

3. Appoint a competent personThe law states that you must appoint a competent person to help you meet your health and safety duties. This person can be someone who is already employed within the company or an external consultant.

4. Write your health and safety policyThis is a unique document that states who is responsible for what, when and how.

5. Assess the risksThis is your company’s risk assessment. You must act on the findings of the risk assessment, by ensuring sensible controls are in place and that these are followed.

6. Provide basic welfare facilitiesThis includes toilets, washing facilities and drinking water, appropriate lighting and temperature.

7. Provide free health and safety training and supervisionEveryone who works for the company, including self-employed people, needs to know how to work safely and without risks to health. So you will need to train them and supervise their work.

8. Consult your employeesConsultation means discussing health and safety with your staff, allowing them to raise concerns and influence decisions.

9. Display the health and safety law posterThis poster includes basic health and safety information and lets people know who is responsible for health and safety in your workplace. Alternatively, you can distribute a leaflet.

10. Understand RIDDOR (The Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995) reporting proceduresRequires you to report work related accidents, diseases and near-miss accidents. It is important that you know how to report, even if you never need to.

11. Keep up to date

MBHS really has taken the stress out of an area that used to be such a concern – now I don’t mind it when someone mentions the words ‘health and safety’.
