PMC became an obvious option. The greatest asset gained is the worldwide recognition, then international twinning and cost. The medical degree is recognised in major English speaking countries such as Ireland, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand.I have no regrets choosing PMC for my medical training.

Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI)Founded in 1784 to provide surgical training for the island of Ireland, a role that continues to this day, RCSI is a unique academic and research institution. Ranked in the Top 2% by the Times Higher World University Rankings, RCSI is Ireland’s largest medical school and with campuses in Dublin and Bahrain, and the PMC programme in Malaysia, the only medical school in the World that delivers its medical programme in three different Countries.

With a single focus on Healthcare, RCSI is a knowledge hub that brings together inspiring medical educators, experienced clinicians and ground-breaking researchers. RCSI is more than a third-level institution; it is a unique learning environment at the leading edge of healthcare education, research and innovation; an organization that, through its education and research activities is shaping the healthcare delivery models of the future.

Our MissionTo educate, nurture and discover for the benefit of human health

University College Dublin (UCD)UCD is one of Europe’s leading research-intensive universities, where undergraduate education, postgraduate training, research, innovation and community engagement form a dynamic activity.

UCD is Ireland’s largest university with over 30,000students, of which 5,000 are international from about 124 countries. We also deliver programmes to a further 5,000 students overseas.

Located on a beautiful leafy campus close to Dublin’s city centre, UCD provides a mix of academic and recreational facilities.

Founded in 1855, the UCD School of Medicine is one of Ireland’s leading medical schools, offering medical education delivered by specialist staff across an extensive network of academic and clinical locations.

Internationally recognised, the UCD School of Medicine has long-established partnerships, links and affiliations in Malaysia, the United States, Canada and China.

The UCD School of Medicine comprises scientists and clinicians united by the goal of improving patient care and health.

The School has a large, dynamic research portfolio extending from in silico bioinformatics, molecular laboratory investigations of disease to clinical research evaluating new therapeutic strategies. It has over 100 principal investigators and is currently managing research grants in excess of 75 million euro.

I had an amazing 2 years in UCD as an international student. I felt very welcomed by the nice people in Ireland. Studies are fun with really helpful lecturers and staffs. I really love UCD’s wonderful studying facilities; computer rooms, printing services, discussion rooms and the UCD Library. I have never regretted my decision I definitely recommend UCD!

Students who decide to attend university abroad gain, on top of everything else, invaluable life experiences. You will be immersed in acompletely different culture.

You meet people from different cultures, backgrounds, people with a different work ethic and languages, who have different beliefs and life experiences than you. You learn to understand and accept differences. You will have the chance to learn from your colleagues, and to teach them about where you come from.

All of these opportunities make you a more well-rounded, compassionate person, and ultimately, a better doctor.

The capital city of the Republic of Ireland was founded by Vikings over 1,000 years ago.

The city has grown to be one of Europe’s most dynamic, student friendly cities. Dublin has over 1.5 million inhabitants and is the headquarter for many multinational IT and software companies. It has five universities, several museums, parks, historical sites and a vibrant nightlife that is known across the globe. Dublin is located by the Irish Sea, with the Dublin/Wicklow mountains to the south and Ireland’s Ancient East to the North. It is easy to move around Dublin, with most attractions within walking distance and the great outdoors at a short journey with the public transport network. Dubliners are fun and easy going and have embraced the international population that has entered the country over the past 20 years.

Study Abroad

Irish Experience

As an EU capital city, Dublin is a gateway to Europe with manybudget flights daily that connect to many EU cities and otherinternational destinations.

Students have the chance to explore many cities when in Ireland, such as Paris, London, Venice, Amsterdam and more, over longweekends.

Some take the opportunity to explore sunnier shores like theCanary Islands, Algarve and Malta.

Ireland offers many places of interest and majestic sights.Among the wonders of Ireland is Newgrange, a prehistoricmonument, older than the pyramids of Egypt that is illuminated by sunlight during the winter solstice.

I knew about Ireland’s reputation for the best medicalschools, I now love it beyond that. An RCSI and PMC twinning program was exactly what I wanted when I decided to study Medicine. RCSI is the best time of my life.

I’ve learned in depth about medicine in the most interesting yet challenging ways and travelled to gain perspective. I’ve visited the UK, Norway, Italy, Turkey and Morocco.

There were so many amazing experiences I had in Dublin.I’m giving an absolute ‘yes’ for studying abroad.

Campus Life in Penang

Penang, “The Pearl of the Orient” is off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Located at the intersection of Asia’s great kingdoms and Europe’s powerful colonial empires, Penang has long served as the link between Asia’s two halves and an important outlet to the markets of Europe and the Middle East.

Today, the island city is one of Malaysia’s most diverse, cosmopolitan and exciting cultures. It culminates in George Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an urban centre that delivers old-world Asia. It is a thriving tourist destination.

The island offers tropical abundance, its palm-fringed beaches and fishing villages, its mountainous jungle and farms growing exotic produce such as nutmeg and durian.

Penang retains a charming appeal and distinctive character. Its heterogeneous population is highly diverse in ethnicity, culture, language and religion, contributing to a wealth of social and cultural attractions. Besides being home to Penang Medical College, the State is also the location of one of the oldest universities in Malaysia, Universiti Sains Malaysia.

Many nationalities opt to work, live and retire here and you will see evidence of diversity living harmoniously together in their friendliness. Penang is also renowned as Malaysia’s culinary capital.

From exotic local street food to elegant fine dining, its local cuisine is a perfect example of cultures combining to produce a dazzling combination of tastes and flavours.

During the clinical years, students will be at the PMC Campus or the teaching hospitals and clinics in Penang. The exceptional clinical training programme is delivered by highly qualified and experienced clinicians.

The PMC programme follows the same structure as the full programmes in Ireland and with exposure to a wider disease profile (tropical diseases). Patient contact and communications skills are given added focus so graduates are internship/housemanship ready.

Additionally, all healthcare facilities are exclusive to PMC Medical Students which allow greater access to the practice they need to produce the quality our graduates are known for.

I have no regrets whatsoever in choosing PMC. It’s an amazing opportunity to be part of an Irish university and still gain practical communication skills and knowledge with its clinical years in Penang. I can familiarise myself with the diseases and illnesses faced in both climate and tropical countries. PMC students certainly have this edge for work in local and foreign health services. It truly offers a world-class education, and for an unparalleled tuition fee too. Strong student support is provided across Ireland and Malaysia. Here are some of the support provided for students:

ResearchRCSI and UCD are not only medical schools steeped in the tradition of producing world class doctors, they also produce groundbreaking medical innovators and researchers. As a PMC student, you are encouraged and supported to embrace independent learning and seek research opportunities as a supplement to the prescribed curriculum and continue your research achievements at PMC.

Opportunities can begin with RCSI Research Summer School, UCD Student Summer Research Awards and PMC Annual Research Day, or working with postgraduate students, faculty and hospitals. Projects range across a broad spectrum of disciplines, from biochemistry, bioinformatics, molecular biology, immunology and inflammation, microbiology, molecular oncology, neurosciences and physiology, pharmacology, and cognitive science to clinical investigation and bioethics.

Medals / AwardsAll students together with classmates at RCSI & UCD can compete for medals and in academic competitions, or enhance an aspect of your experience which can result in awards (recognition or financial) and medals.

Volunteering RCSI, UCD and PMC recognise the significance of education and health management in both the life of an individual and a community and is committed to finding ways in which to give back to our communities in Ireland, Malaysia and abroad.

Many opportunities exist for students to engage with the community through volunteering and other activities. Faculty, student clubs and societies, with the support of Student Services also lead a number of key community based initiatives that make a real difference, even during natural disasters.

My volunteering experience at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dublin was very insightful. It is a rehabilitation hospital for patients who have acquired a physical or cognitive disability due to accident, illness or injury. I spent time with the patients and had observation of physiotherapy treatment sessions.

Goh Chia Yin2nd year medical student

Sports clubs and societies allow me to get to know to the dwellers of UCD from across the globe. I joined Taekwondo, Medical Society, Japanese Society and International Student Society. These societies allow me to build my social skill with people with different walks of lives. I also joined some taekwondo tournaments and the trophies that I won will be a sweet memory for me from UCD. The sports centre has a top class facility comprised of gyms, Olympic-sized swimming pool, sports hall, football pitch and fields. There is always room for everyone to get active and overall I never regret my decision to apply to UCD.

Solihin Zahari

The experience gained from RCSI’s Research Summer School (RSS) is both enriching & enjoyable. Engaging in research has helped me learn how to think critically, independently and creatively.

Getting into the PMC Programme is in itselfa major achievement. My advice, aim far higher than the required grades, to ensure competitiveness. Also, if possible, take the opportunity to shadow a doctor, get a feel of what it’s really like in a hospital, seeing patients in the wards. Furthermore, attend courses in basic first aid, or at least get some volunteering experience done. Doctors are selfless individuals who put their patients’ priorities first and foremost, so it is good to get a feel for their motivation before committing to medicine.

From our time in the fair city of Dublin, when we threw hundred person parties (at UCD), and travelled to Europe and beyond. To our time now in the beautiful island of Penang, where there is always a new place to eat, a new

mural to see, and a new reason to celebrate.

My colleagues are singers and sportsmen, have published research and presented at conferences, and helped so many people via the Community Outreach Society.

Hippocrates said, wherever the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.

Thank you to all the patients we have met in these five years of training. We are privileged to hear people tell us their stories, and offer their bodies and their pain up to us for examination. This is an honour, and a sacred trust,

and I hope we will hold it well.
