Be Part of Something Really Wild This Summer at
the Library!
Each summer, participants in our Summer Reading
Programs have the chance to select prizes.
This year, children and ‘tweens have a unique
prize choice, called “Befriend an Animal.”
Through the “Befriend an Animal” prize, read-
ers have the opportunity to help improve ani-
mal habitats and enrichment programs, as well as ed-
ucation and conservation, at the zoo! When partici-
pants choose the “Befriend an Animal” prize, they will
be helping us befriend Lucky, a Black Footed Penguin
at the Henry Vilas Zoo. Each individual who chooses
this prize will get to sign a card to Lucky and will re-
ceive a trading card with Lucky’s picture on it, along

geek? Bring your geekiest obsession for Show & Tell,

urday, May 16, 2-4 pm for a Movie Sing-
along—bring a CD with your favorite song &
do a lip synch following the movie! Teen art-
ists, writers, & photographers are invited to enter our
annual Teen Writing, Drawing, and Photography Con-
tests. Deadline for entries is June 29, suggested
theme: “Heroes.” See our summer brochures for more
details! (We are also looking for teen judges to help
judge the Writing Contest!)
Summer Reading!
Did you know we have Summer Reading
Programs for all ages? Our teen theme
for this year is “Unmask” with a Masquerade Ball as
our Finale! Teens are invited to try their luck with our
scratch off prize cards just for entering the Summer
Reading program. Create your goal of how much you
think you can read over the summer and get prizes at
your halfway and final goal. This year, there is the op-
tion to donate to First Book, a charity that provides
books to low-income families. (The funds the library
would have spent on a prize will be donated to this
charity, if you choose this option.) We also have lots
of other teen programs this summer—see our sum-
mer program fliers for information on Tie-Dye, Mock
the Movie (text comments to the big screen!),
Cake & Ice Cream Making, and many other pro-
grams that were suggested by teens!
FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.”
- Benjamin Franklin
You may have heard that the Middleton Public Library
is undergoing a Building Feasibility Study. “Why?”
you may ask. The short answer is “long term planning
for the future.” It’s about determining the best way to
maximize current facilities for the next 20 years. The
idea behind a Building Feasibility Study is to take a
big picture look at how facilities are being used, not-
ing information-seeking pathways and their shifting
needs, visitor traffic patterns, scanning the industry’s
future trends, paying attention to demographic
changes, examining the structure, and creating an ef-
ficient, affordable and flexible plan to accommodate
the service needs for a long time. What that plan will
look like is yet to be determined. Right now, we’re
still in the Information Gathering Phase.
To be honest, it’s a monumental task that requires a
commitment of time and energy. It can’t be accom-
plished in a vacuum, but is best achieved through
feedback from various stakeholders and orchestrated
by professionals. That’s why the Middleton Public
Library Board of Trustees hired a local architectural
firm who has a great deal of successful experience
working with public library projects (such as the Vero-
na Public Library). To date, the process has involved
public listening sessions, public online surveys, and
crafting a list of future library service trends, a strate-
gic objectives list, and a collection
analysis matrix. The next phase in-
volves a structural analysis and a
Block and Structure Design Work-
shop.
These are exciting times for libraries. New and rapidly
changing technologies, the proliferation of digital in-
formation in various formats, such as wearable tech-
nology, adaptive technologies and makerspaces, have
changed the way people learn and communicate.
Likewise, these advanced technologies have changed
the way libraries function and interact with patrons.
This shift, along with a focus on community engage-
ment, has led to a broadening of library roles from
the traditional role of developing the collection,
providing reference desk assistance, conducting in-
struction sessions, and presenting programs, to in-
clude technology based programs, STEAM based and
experiential programming and outreach services. In
order to remain relevant to the residents of Middleton
and its surrounding area, it is critical that we integrate
these dynamic offerings and advanced technologies
into our plans for future library services.
Updates will be published on our website at
www.midlibrary.org/feasibility. We encourage
everyone to visit the website and to send suggestions
to me at [email protected].
