A NOTE FROM HOMEA NOTE FROM HOMEA NOTE FROM HOMEA NOTE FROM HOME
Russell Baker of The New York Times wrote the following words, tongue-in-cheek: “They buried Gumbacher last week. The death certificate said he died of Coliosorus Gravis, more commonly known as the spreading de-cline, but his friends know better. Gumbacher was slowly scared to death by the combined efforts of several thousand national campaigns to help him live longer. At the end, Gumbacher simply had more terrors weighing upon him than the human body can support…. Everyday science was dis-covering that something Gumbacher had been exposed to all his life was lethal. He finally concluded that all he could do was die. When someone mentioned his plight to scientists, they replied, ‘If more people in this land had the good sense to be afraid of living, they would live longer.’”
I could give you the statistics: 40% of most worries never happen, 30% were about past decisions we cannot alter, 12% were about mostly false criticism, 10% were about our health which only grew worse with worry, and only 8% of what we worry about is a legitimate concern.
I could give you the sermon: Jesus said, “Do not be anxious about your life...which of you by being anxious can add one cubit to his span of life?” But in the end, like old Gumbacher, we’d just start worrying about some-thing else—like worrying too much!
So maybe the best way to exit the worry trap is not to try to stop worrying, but to start to do something else that takes worry’s place.
The Bible recommends two things to replace worry: 1. Prayer—Cast all your anxieties on Him, for He cares about you. (1 Peter 5:7) 2. Laughter—A cheerful heart is a good medicine; but a downcast spirit
dries up the bones. (Proverbs 17:22)
So learn from poor old Gumbacher and take God at his word, AND don’t take yourself too seriously.
Pastor Paul

Confirmation: May 4th at 10:30 Worship
8th Grade Confirmation & Worship will be celebrated Sunday, May 4th, during the 10:30 service with a New Member reception following in Fellowship Hall. At LL, Confirmation is an 8-month training in the Christian faith that focuses on the study of the Apostle’s Creed. Confirmation education includes attending weekly classes and worship as well as field trips, a lock-in, and mission work. Each youth has an adult faith mentor with whom they meet during the year for spiritual support and friendship. The youth study God, Jesus and his saving grace, the Holy Spirit’s power in the life of the Believer, the Wesleyan Movement, the sacraments, heaven, sin, general and local church history, church membership, and what it means to profess Christ and live a Christian life. They conclude their studies by writing their own statements of faith or creeds, attending a personal interview, and leading worship on confirmation.

Lovely Lane Preschool’s family night on April 8th was a huge success! Our teachers did
an outstanding job of creating a night of fun for our families.
We are still taking registrations for our summer program. We offer full-time, part-time
and drop in options. Come join us for a summer of activities.
Preschool graduation takes place on May 28th & 29th. Everyone is welcome to join us for
this celebration. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Our graduation concludes
our 2013-2014 school year.
LL 4-year-old students took a fieldtrip to Peck’s on April 21st; Trinity Lane 4-year-old
students took a fieldtrip to Wikki-Up Hill. Science Center visited LL with Bubble Won-
ders and Orchestra Iowa visited with music activities. Science Center also visited
Trinity Lane.
Spring cleaning??? Take your items to Stuff, Etc. and donate them to our charitable
account. When donating to a charitable account, there is no need to make an appoint-
ment – simply drop off.
Even though our cut-off date for HyVee receipts was April 30th for our 2013-2014
school year, please keep saving. Anything dated after May 1st will count towards next
year’s fund raiser. Thank you to all our families for the great support!
We have filed our application for QRS (Quality Rating Scale) for Level 4 (of a possible

Special Thank You from the Missions Committee
“We would like to thank all the generous members of our congregation who donated their
services to the Service Auction. We are blessed to have a very talented and generous con-
gregation!
We would also like to thank everyone that participated in the auction on Sunday, April
27th. With your help, we were able to raise $5,200 to help eradicate malaria in Africa and to
feed hunger children that attend Pierce Elementary. $4,000 will be donated to Imagine No Malaria and the remaining $1,200 will support our Pierce Panther Pack ministry.
Finally, we would like to thank those individuals that volunteered, at the auction. Thank you
to Eric Wylie for his help with the sound equipment and Justin Gehrts for his auctioneering
skills, Ron Nelson, Pastor Paul and Les Minor for bid spotting (and joke telling), Sherry Mi-
nor and Tracy Gehrts for working the registration and check out table, Maryann Stewart and
Margaret Nelson for setting up and making coffee, Jen and Steve Mineck for arranging the
silent auction and Deidra, Jenny, and the youth group and youth leaders for coordinating a
delicious lunch. Most of these people performed multiple jobs. What a great team!”

FROM UNITED METHODIST COMMUNICATIONS…
Dear Life Changer,
On World Malaria Day, or any other day, if you said a prayer, donated a dollar or “covered
the Net” to raise awareness of this killer disease… we thank you. By spreading the word that
there has been progress and there is hope, the chances multiply that deaths from malaria will
be eliminated sooner rather than later.
We wish we could thank you in ways beyond words. Instead of virtual thanks, we would
send you buckets of joyful tears cried by pregnant mothers. We would send you letters from
children in classrooms—kids who might otherwise not have lived long enough to go to
school. We would show you the mountain of insecticide-treated nets—provided through
your gifts—that protect families as they sleep.
Not only would we offer gratitude for saving lives; we also would celebrate how Imagine No
Malaria is changing the lives of supporters. Our churches have come alive with ways to be-
come involved. Children in Sunday School have led by giving their pennies and raising tens
of thousands of dollars more. Local congregations have opened their eyes to a world beyond
the one in which they live. United Methodists have joined across communities and countries
to work toward a common purpose. We have put words into actions and actions into healing.
When we say, “Thank you for everything you’ve done and will continue to do,” think of a
child’s smile, a mother’s answered prayers and a village’s rebirth. Think of revitalized
churches, healthy children and togetherness as a denomination. Think of being God’s hands
and feet in a world starving for love. GOD BLESS YOU FOR CARING.

Lane Green Team is sponsoring an Eco-Swap and a Green Cleaning
Practices Workshop on Wednesday, May 14th. There will also be a
FREE meal, so you can make a whole evening out of it!
The meal and the Eco Swap will begin at 6:00 PM. Please bring in
spring/summer items, in good repair, that you no longer need. Sug-
gested items for this swap are outdoor toys and athletic gear, gar-
dening equipment, extra plants or seeds, and spring or summer
craft items. At the swap you can browse what others have brought
and take home items that you need. Green Team's swaps are run

items – not just the same amount of items you brought. Our GOAL is
to find everybody's items a good new home. The swap will continue

JFON’S NEW EASTERN IOWA ATTORNEY
Ann Naffier, Des Moines, became the Eastern Iowa attorney for Iowa
Justice For Our Neighbors as of January 2, 2014. Ann came to the East-
ern Iowa clinic settings to work with the volunteers and help immigrants
with their immigration processes. Those clinics are Cedar Rapids,
Columbus Junction, and Ottumwa.
Ann, a graduate of Drake University Law School, May of 2011, worked
previously at Davis Brown Law Firm. There she represented immigrants
and citizens in their immigration proceedings, including family-based
immigration, waivers, removal defense, asylum, TPS, DACA and some
employment-based applications.
From 1996 to Aug. 2008, Ann was Immigration Legal Services Director
with the Des Moines American Friends Service Committee, providing
counseling to immigrants and refugees, filed immigration forms and
represented immigrants before the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Service.
Ann is a member of Iowa-Nebraska Chapter, American Immigration Law-
yers Association.
Thank you to the individuals and churches who have supported the JFON
program in Iowa. You make a difference for many people as they work
through their immigration processes. It is the hope of the committee that
you will continue your support, for without you this program would not
be happening in any of the 5 locations that host clinics in Iowa.
As the clinic Coordinator in Cedar Rapids, I look forward to continuing to
work with Ann in the Cedar Rapids clinic.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION
Just think, Just think, Just think, Just think, you’re not here by chance,
but by God’s choosing. His hand formed you
and made you the person you are. He compares you to no one else—
you are one of a kind. You lack nothing that His grace
can’t give you. He has allowed you
to be here at this time in history to fulfill His special purpose
for this generation.

Dear United Methodist Friends: On Tuesday I visited Lovely Lane UMC with Ann Naffier, attorney for Iowa Justice for Our Neighbors. From the time we arrived, your helpful staff took great care of us! They helped us set up a warm space for seeing individual refugee and immigrant clients. Your area where people can wait is very inviting as well.
In the evening 50-60 people were involved in giving or re-ceiving hospitality in the fellowship hall. A meal was served by Buffalo UMC to the immigrants, refugees and volunteers who conducted intake interviews. Thank you for the use of your space and kitchen. Immigrants and refugees came away with answers to complex and urgent questions about how immigration law affects their future and the future of their families. Waiting to talk to the JFON attorney takes time and your fellowship room has toys aplenty for the kids.
Thank you for the generous use of your space. If you have not had time to visit, please drop by to see this mission of your church, shared with Justice for Our Neighbor, in action. God bless your ministry. Judy KadingJudy KadingJudy KadingJudy Kading
A Big Thanks Goes Out to You! The Ecumenical Com-munity Center Staff thanks you for your generous donation. Together we can make a difference in our community.
Thank you so much for donating 177 pounds of food to the Linn Community Food Bank during the first quarter of 2014. The Food Bank depends entirely on the generosity of indi-viduals, businesses and churches to operate. We do not receive any kind of government assistance. Without sup-port such as yours, plus the help of over 100 volunteers, we would not be able to assist the hungry in our community. Providing emergency food to those in need has been the mission of the LCFB for over 40 years. After a minimal screening process, the Food Bank provides a free, bal-anced, 3-day supply of canned and packaged food assem-bled by volunteers. Clients can use the Food Bank re-sources up to 6 times per year. Again, thank you for helping us in our mission of feeding the hungry in our community.
