Christ Is Risen! Have We Forgiven? By George & Melissa Tsongranis

… Forgiveness is an indispensable part of our Christian being. To celebrate Christ’s Resurrection—as God’s people—is to willingly accept the grace of forgiveness, both in granting it to others and actively seeking it for ourselves. What Is Forgiveness and Why Can It Be So Hard? The ability to forgive is the Christ-like trait to let go of offenses. That is not to say that forgiveness is always an easy or automatic process. Even when we consciously decide to forgive someone, we may cling to negative emotions and remember the hurt, disappointment, or embarrassment we experienced. However, when we remember we are all sinners in need of God’s mercy, forgiveness comes more naturally to us. We must also be mindful, that is only through the grace of God that we are able to forgive anyone. Why Is Forgiveness Important? When we pray the Lord’s Prayer, we ask God to “forgive us our trespasses AS WE FORGIVE those who trespass against us.” In other words, being forgiven and forgiving others are two sides of the same coin. It is critical to remember, also, that we are forgiven by God with the same proportion as we forgive others. In Matthew 6:14-15 Christ says, “For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you do not forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.” So, it is clear that forgiveness is important for our soul. In addition, a variety of studies have shown people who forgive unconditionally live longer than those who do not. Forgiveness is for our own physical, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing. What Does It Mean to Forgive Unconditionally? Unconditional forgiveness means that we don’t require anything of the person we are forgiving. We can’t say, “I’ll forgive him as soon as he pays the money back.” Or “I will forgive her as soon as she apologizes.” Forgiveness is about love—loving others as ourselves. Even if the other person isn’t ready to accept our forgiveness or to forgive us—because oftentimes responsibility lies on both ends—we still should seek it. We can only accept responsibility for ourselves and humbly pray for reconciliation. How Many Times? In Matthew 18:21-22, Peter asked Christ the limits to forgiveness even suggesting seven times for each person. Christ answers by saying, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.” We understand the Lord’s response not to signify a literal number of 490, but, to figuratively imply that we are to forgive without limit. This is a tremendous example of the high calling of our baptism into Christ. In varying numbers and degrees of conflict, Christians are called to forgive as a faithful response to God’s unfathomable love for us. That said, it is important to note that if injuries against you are blatantly abusive, you must seek personal safety before you can begin working toward forgiveness. Forgiving does not mean allowing someone to continually abuse you. Forgiveness can be challenging, and we need to approach it with prayer and humility. We begin by examining our own sins and confessing them, as well as seeking forgiveness from those we have wronged. We need to be patient and honest with ourselves as we work toward this goal. Deeper wounds may impact the amount of time and help we need to make peace with a situation or person.

last, follows a formerly well-off grocery clerk as he tries to

maintain his integrity in the face of temptation to get ahead by dishonest means. It was cited when Steinbeck received the

Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962 as being as powerful as his

classic, The Grapes of Wrath.

May Day came and went, accompanied by the monsoons of

Spring. Our lawns never looked so lush and beautiful! As we

enter this summer season with its anticipated scorcher & drought

-like days, let us remember these squishy-earth days with

fondness.

If you have not yet made your 2019 Stewardship pledge, please

do so! Remember that our St. Nicholas Operating Income (which

includes our Ministries) comes from your Stewardship.

We held our last Parish Council meeting on April 9. Here are

some meeting highlights plus other bits of information since my

last update:

• We finally have our new gym roof at St. Nicholas! And we

have two other small roofs under contract. It’s taken several

months of waiting for the right weather, but hallelujah! the

gym has been completed! Thank you to Dino Pappas, our St.

Nicholas Facilities Chair for working with our contractor to see

this work through to completion. And also an enormous thank

you to our very kind and generous anonymous parishioner

who provided the funding for these efforts.

• At our March General Assembly meeting, without a quorum

we were not able to vote on members of the Election

Committee. At our April meeting, the Parish Council approved

a slate of individuals to serve on the committee. They are: Paul

Leara, Pat Lekich, Demmie Nicozisin, Mark Vleisides, and

Chris Zaharias. Thanks to these individuals for stepping up to

serve.

• We created a “curb cut,” or ramp, in the circle driveway at St.

Nicholas to make our facility more accessible. The ramp takes

you to the wooden ramp in front of the three wooden doors.

Although the area is clearly marked as such, please DO NOT

park in front of the ramp area.

• We would like to thank Father Seraphim for his knowledge and

leadership in building and directing our new antiphonal choir.

It’s been almost a year of work, but the two choirs are

beginning to come together beautifully to chant hymns and

praises to our Lord.

• In May Father Michael, Parish Council Vice President and

Philoptochos President Carol Kamburis, Dr. Andy Galakatos,

and I met with Greg Patterson and Bryan Reichley of BJC. Greg

and Bryan reached out to touch base as “friendly neighbors”

and to reiterate their support of our Parish and our activities.

They also let us know about upcoming construction activities,

such as the development of a large new building to be built on

Forest Park just east of the Parkway Hotel in the next 2 years

and the demolition of Queeny Towers that will occur over the

next year. It was a very amiable meeting; we thanked them for

their continued support and gave them each a box of

Koulourakia!

• Get out your waders! Our Family Life Center Facilities team

just saved our Parish $900 by performing the required annual

maintenance on our wet pond! They performed all

maintenance and submitted the Stormwater Facilities

Management Report, which was accepted without issue by the

Metropolitan St. Louis Sewer District. Previously, we paid a

vendor to perform this work and report on our behalf. Thank

you Nick Tharenos, Nick Koskolas, Demos Argyros & Roy Hill!

• We appreciate our faithful parishioners who come to help with

baking and other church activities. And we know that everyone

prefers parking in the circle driveway, rather than parking in

the garage and walking over to church. Please remember that

there MUST be ample space for an emergency vehicle to pass

through the circle drive. Please do not park in such a way as to

block access through the driveway. Thank you in advance for

your understanding and cooperation!

Kendra Gives Back Party - May 10 – A big thank you to Kendra Scott - Frontenac for hosting this very successful fundraiser for Philoptochos. All were greeted with sips, sweets, and jewels! Many thanks to our parishioners that attended and shopped during the 5 – 8 p.m. slot…. 20% of all purchases during this time period went to the benefit of St. Nicholas Ladies Philoptochos. Special thanks to Betsy Murphy for planning this event and all who took the time to shop for Philoptochos – when you help us, you help us help others!

Philoptochos General Dinner Meeting/Board Elections - May 16 – We wrapped up a productive calendar year at our dinner meeting at the St. Nicholas Family Life Center and elected the new St. Nicholas Philoptochos Board!

• Sunday, July 28 Get ready to have fun! Summer Sunday School is just around the corner! It is open to children who have completed their first year of Sunday School up through 5th grade. We will begin after Holy Communion and will end around 11:30 am. Classes will be on the first floor next to Director’s office. We will focus on a lesson, activity, game or song and then have snack together. On Sunday, June 30th, we will have a patriotic theme! We are looking for volunteers to assist or teach for Summer Sunday School. Any amount of time you can volunteer is appreciated. We can help by being a lead teacher, assistant (helping kids with crafts, setting up, cleaning up) or just help by bringing in a healthy nut free snack. We are also looking to recruit a new Summer Sunday School Director that can take on the Summer Sunday School Program. The fee for Summer Sunday School is $10 per child or $15 per family for all five classes. In an effort to communicate the status of our loan for the St. Nicholas Family Life Center & renovations to St. Nicholas Church, below is a condensed timeline to recap the past 20 years. 1999: Purchased 3.2 acres in Town & Country for $2,500,000

2003: Retired the land loan for a total of $3,200,000

2010: First St. Nicholas Capital Campaign raised $4,000,000 in pledges and construction began on the St. Nicholas Family Life Center

Total cost to complete construction of the St. Nicholas Family Life Center and major renovations to St. Nicholas Church on Forest Park of $8,500,000

2012: Signed loan documents for $5,855,024

2015: Refinanced to a lower 3% interest municipal bond loan of $5,273,184

2019: Today our current loan amount is at $4,681,511 --Our monthly mortgage payment is $25,500 ($13,762 principle & $11,738 interest) We have made significant strides towards paying off our debt. Thank you for your continued love and dedication to our parish.

We thank the St. Nicholas Community for their generous and thoughtfulness of those less fortunate. We continue to assist people in our Confidential Program and we thank you for your support when we need your help. We hope you will continue to keep us in your prayers.

CLOTHING FOR FOCUS: If you would like to donate towards FOCUS outreach program please gather gently used clothing for men, women and children and bring to St. Nicholas Church. Please ask for Chris Paradowski so he can assist you in putting the clothing in a specific place for storage until FOCUS can pick it up.

FOOD BAG MINISTRY: Please continue to fill your food bags. Our need for this ministry has grown and is very much appreciated by our charity organizations, our clergy and our outreach programs. These are difficult times for many people and your donations of food items, clothing, furniture and financial assistance have allowed us to help our own parishioners and those in our outreach program. Please see the suggested menu to the left of our message.

FURNITURE DONATIONS: If you are donating furniture, please contact us first. Please send an email to Jeanne at: [email protected] with a photo, description of the furniture and how soon it needs to be picked up. We will try to place your items and notify you if we can use it. The person who does the pickup is a volunteer and must arrange for use of a truck. If we are able to use your furniture, we will be pleased to send a tax form for your records.

FAMILY IN NEED: We have a family in urgent need, they have housing but no furnishings. They are in need of furniture, household items bedding and small appliances. Please contact us so we may arrange to pick up the items (contact information is below). Also, please email Jeanne at [email protected] and include a picture of the donation so we know the size and can arrange pickup and delivery accordingly.
