NEW MEXICO JUNIOR COLLEGEBuilt in 1963, New Mexico Junior College (NMJC) became the first junior college in our state. Today, NMJC’s campus occupies 243 acres, with a student population of approximately 3,000 and over 250 full-time employees.

During its history, our college has grown and matured in the programs and degrees it offers, as well as in the campus community, athletics, and clubs. Our distinctive degrees include Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, and Associate of Applied Science, as well as certificates in business and industry vocations. We house eight student organizations, and our renowned athletics teams have earned several national titles.

During its outstanding history, its current development, and its future goals, NMJC is proud to serve Lea County and the surrounding area with educational excellence and success through learning.

CAPS & TAMSThe square, tasseled mortar-board cap is worn by Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degree holders.

The velvet tams distinguish Doctoral degree earners.

ACADEMIC REGALIAThe tradition of academic regalia goes back to the 12th century, originating in Europe where the first universities were founded.

By the 1800s, many U.S. colleges had adopted their own regalia colors and shapes representing different schools of thought. During that decade, it became tradition for colleges to dress their students, faculty, and trustees in robes as part of baccalaureate and commencement ceremonies.

In 1894, a number of U.S. colleges convened and drafted a codified style and color guide for academic robes and hoods. That standard, revised in the 1900s, is still respected by many colleges and universities today. Tonight, NMJC proudly honors that centuries-old tradition, as students take part in this rite-of-passage.

HOODSWhile no students tonight wear hoods for the degrees conferred upon them, many of our faculty do.

These hoods, like the different robes, serve to give distinction to the level of education earned by the wearer. The Master’s hood is three and one-half feet long, coordinated in the color of each discipline. The Doctoral hood is four feet long and rounded at the bottom. The inside of the hood in lined with the color of the college or university he/she attended, and the holder of the hood carries the color of the field of learning.

GOWNSAll candidates in tonight’s ceremony will wear the bachelor’s gown and cap, since they will either receive an Associate degree or a certificate.

All Bachelor’s degree recipients, and those who receive Associate degrees, wear untrimmed, simple-sleeved gowns. Master’s degrees are distinguished by untrimmed gowns and long, oblong sleeves that are closed at the ends. A Doctoral gown is faced down the front with black velvet and three bars of velvet across the sleeves. These facings and crossbars are often in the color distinctive to the discipline of the wearer.

Honor GraduatesStudents with a final GPA of at least 3.5 receive golden chords with yellow tassels. During the ceremony, NMJC’s president, Dr. Sharp, places the honor cords around the neck of the honor graduates.

Phi Theta Kappa (PTK)PTK is the International Honor Society for two-year colleges. The organization recognizes and encourages scholarship among community college students. Active members wear gold stoles as part of their regalia.

Mu Alpha Theta (MAT)MAT, the National Mathematics Honor Society, is dedicated to inspiring keen interest in mathematics and developing strong scholarship in the subject. Active members wear honor cords of blue and gold as part of their regalia.

NMJC also recognizes student veterans and military students with the Military and Veteran Honor Cords. These red, white, and blue chords are worn with regalia during graduation.
