We are reopening our churches in the Diocese of Honolulu because of the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. In our parish, like most parishes in the Diocese, we are reopening on this Solemnity of Pentecost. To reopen on this Solemnity is very timely and meaningful in that life is renewed and set free, faith is rejuvenated and expressed again in the open, and with much rejoicing, we welcome our parishioners back to church to offer the Eucharist together in per-son.

Let us recall that there were forty days of fasting in the Lenten season and also there are fifty days of feasting in the Easter season that culminates with our celebration today. Fasting and feasting, two facets of life likened two-sides of one coin. There was that time when we were called to discipline ourselves, that was, in Lent, and a continuing time to dis-cipline more ourselves, that is, in Easter. What happens many times though is instead of fasting we are led to “fast-eating”. I realized, with the lockdown, many gained weighed. One of our priests said, “Father has acquired COVID-15.” “That is a new virus,” I said. The reply was, “Well, Father gained 15 pounds because of the COVID lockdown.” I pray that our time of feasting leads us to be more fitting, both physically and spiritually.

It has been impressed on us that Pentecost is the birthday of the Church. With Pentecost, the Church has been gifted with life and has started to grow. This life and this growth were made possible through the Holy Spirit at Pentecost given to the apostles. As recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, as they have received the Holy Spirit, the apostles went out with courage and with strength to preach the Good News and started baptizing people in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. And so, the Church has begun and since then the Church has grown and to this day it is alive through and in us.

Let us look at the scriptural readings to appreciate this fact of life and growth. The First Reading is taken from the Acts of the Apostles. It is chapter Two. This Reading therefore shows at the outset what happened to the Apostles after Jesus ascended to heaven. It well described how the Holy Spirit descended on them: a strong driving wind and tongues as of fire. And the Spirit enabled them to proclaim and the people, although coming from different places and have differ-ent languages understood the message. Let us participate in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ for us to grow personally and for the Church to grow in number.

The Second Reading is taken from the First Letter of Paul to the Corinthians. This is the Pauline illustration of the Body of Christ, using our own body having many and different parts, having respective functions but all lead to build-ing up of that one body. I think it is easy to understand that each one has his or her respective role to play in the body. Not all can become the head, otherwise we are making a mutant; not all can become the hands, otherwise we are making a monster; not all can become the feet, otherwise we are making a new creature. Pentecost is significant to remind us to be one and be united as one body in Christ.

The Gospel Reading is taken from the Gospel of John with the famous Easter greeting, “Peace be with you!” And the message continues, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them…” There is a message of peace and a message of reconciliation. And so, Pentecost should be significant because of the call for us to have peace and to reconcile with one another whatever differences we have. To forgive is a way to grow. To understand, to be one and united, to be at peace and to reconcile – all these should make significant the event of Pentecost in our life today, es-pecially as we return to church and the public celebration of the Eucharist.

A practical point for us to think about: Jesus made a promise to his followers, to us all, that He will not leave us orphans. Jesus will ask the Father to send us an Advocate. On Pentecost, Jesus fulfilled His promise. And so today as good stewards of God’s manifold grace, let us be reminded to fulfill our promises. Let us live according to the vows we made before the altar of the Lord. When building up a community, when establishing our family, we have to be more aware of our promises and our vows in order that our relationships will last and will have no end. from coming to Mass on Sundays for the month of June or until further notice.June or until further notice.June or until further notice.June or until further notice. Dispensation means we do not have an

still have to observe social distancing. Please read the “Guidelines for the Re-Opening at OLPH” on the parish website

The Adopt A Seminarian project just released a new poster of our seminarians for the Diocese of Honolulu. It’s a take on the Fast and Furious movie poster, usually this project

would collect donations of goodies to send to our seminari-ans during the school year. Because of the pandemic they did send any goodies this semester but we still ask for you

to adopt-a-seminarian by praying for him.

Our seminarians are coming to the end of the school year and so pray for them as they prepare for final exams. Pray

also for our very own seminarian, Ace Tui as his date of or-dination gets closer and closer.

On March 24, 2020 a formal RFQ was released to 13 General Contractors. RLB contacted each of the contractors by email and/or telephone to gauge their interest in our project. 9 of 13 contractors showed definite interest in participating in our project in a Design Assist environment. • Qualification proposals are due back from the contractors on Wednesday April 15th and selection is to be made Monday May

4th. (We may have to either delay selection or attempt selection on-line) • May 2020 is still targeted as release of the RFP • RFP proposals are due in June 2020 and the start of services later that month. During this stage of the process we will be attempting to select our contractor partner in the Design Assist program. The selected contractor will become part of the Design Team with the hope being further value engineering to reduce cost in either methodol-ogy or materials to be used on our project. The selected contractor will be invited to bid through the Request for Proposal (RFP). The awarded contract would be only for pre-construction services through construction documents (CD), not construc-tion itself. The construction award would be made only after: • We have determined a final construction cost that is within our affordability range • Completion of an updated cash flow analysis with new cost numbers and updated loan interest rates • Construction Loan through the Diocese (Interest only currently 4.75%) • Post Construction Loan through the Knights of Columbus (P & I currently @ 4.04% 20 yrs.) • Approval from Diocese to proceed with construction • Approval from the Vatican since the Knights of Columbus loan requires the use of stable patrimony as security for the loan

which will be in excess of $3 million
