A Housewife Wrote A Memorable Hymn
It has been said that every hymn has its own story.
The problem lies in finding that story.
Most hymns of las#ng value are the result of events
or experiences that inspired the author, however there are
excep#ons. One excep#on was the composing of “I Need
Thee Every Hour.”
Anne Sherwood Hawks was in the best of health.
She lacked no comfort or advantage in her Brooklyn home.
She was in the prime of life and was the idol of her devoted
husband and children. On a clear day in June, 1872 she was
so happy that her thoughts turned to a feeling of gra#tude
to the Lord for her many blessings. “I remember the morn-
ing very well when I felt a warm sense of “nearness to the
Lord” and the words ‘I need Thee every hour’ popped into
my mind. It was during those “hours of sweet security and
peace” that Mrs. Hawks put her housework aside and wrote
a famous hymn-poem.
Wri#ng poetry was not new to her. Ever since she
had been a teenager in Hoosick, New York, where she was
born in 1835, she had wriNen verses. Moving to Brooklyn in
1857, she joined the Hanson Place Bap#st Church where she
was encouraged in her wri#ng skills by her preacher, brother
Robert Lowry. Mrs. Hawks shared her poem “I Need Thee
Every Hour” with him. He, too, was an author-composer of
numerous well-known hymns such as “Shall We Gather At
The River?” He published it in his songbook Royal Diadem.
Ira Sankey sang it at many of the great revivals led by Dwight
L. Moody in both England and America.
Regarding her hymn’s popularity, Mrs. Hawks said:
“I do not understand why it so touched the great throbbing
heart of humanity.” However, in 1888, sixteen years later,
the housewife who had once known only “hours of sweet
security and peace” understood. She had said that the
death of her devoted husband had cast a “shadow of a great
loss” over her life. For the thirty years that followed, un#l
her death in 1918, Anne Sherwood Hawks turned to her own
hymn for peace and comfort.
While the author did not fully appreciate the mean-
ing of her poem un#l long aBer she had wriNen it, there is
s#ll a story behind it. You will recognize the words:
“I need Thee ev’ry hour,
Most gracious Lord;
No tender voice like Thine
Can peace afford.”
Chorus:
“I need Thee, O I need Thee;
Every hour I need Thee!
O bless me now, my Savior,
I come to Thee.”
