Tuesday, May 12 Board meeting via phone. Russ will set up the particulars.

Wednesday, May 20 We’re planning to do a tour of the Valley and drive by hospitals, fire stations andthe like in a small way to salute our first responders. Just as we've seen on news reports and by members ofour own club, we can keep safe distance, get the hell out of the house and salute some of those who havebusted their butts for us in the last 60+ days. The Wednesday was chosen because a hard core group oftenmet for lunch on Wednesday. Details have not yet been decided upon- we could start in the north Valley andproceed south or west valley and come east. There are plenty of venues to hit.

If you agree that this could be a fun way to break the tedium, call, text or e-mail Roberta or Harvey -Harvey’s cell (818) 621-4774, their home (818) 360-5202, Roberta’s email [email protected] andHarvey’s email [email protected] .

Last month, Ron Waters and his wife Janet led a group of 89 cars to help celebrate a friend’s 89th birthday.Ron and Janet were group leaders because they were the only ones in a vintage car. Janet thought this was adandy idea, apparently because Ron did, and set it up with Harvey to have a couple of Model A’s drive by tocelebrate Ron’s birthday (I don’t think his 89th) on Thursday April 30. Harvey, Mike Petrella and HunterBloch helped make Ron’s day. I think Janet nailed it when she said she’d have doughnuts!

Thank you to all of you who responded to my request for “Whatyou were doing”. I, myself, have been practicing screwing. I usedto be pretty good at it, but lately not so much. I don’t seem to beable to get the thing lined up with the hole and attempt afterattempt, no success. I realize that patience plays a large part insuccessful screwing , and that if you’re in a hurry, it may nothappen, and if it does, it’s probably wrong. It can’t be the tools, they are the same ones I’ve used my whole life. Indeed, it’s thesame hole. I remember it offered a slight challenge the last time Itried, about a year ago, but I was able to get it in (after a couple ofattempts). I thought maybe it was age related, but I had McKaygive it a shot and he failed too, so I can’t blame it on age. I dohave to say that trying different methods has made my shut downtime interesting and I’ll continue to keep trying, sinceremember that when I was successful, I REALLYenjoyed it. So keep trying I will and hopefully nextmonth I’ll be able to report that finally got that*^$%)) screw into the bottom of my instrumentcluster!

Elsa Schiaparelli

In the 1930s, fashion saw a profound influencefrom films and specifically Hollywood. Men'sand women's styles were largely based onfashions seen on screen with stars like ClarkGable, Fred Astaire, Jean Harlow and BetteDavis who directly influenced fashion.

The fashion industry underwent many changesduring this decade in response to the severeeconomic hardships of the time, known as theGreat Depression. Factory-made garments (whatwe now refer to as “ready-to-wear”) becamepopular because clothing could be mass producedfor far less than made-to-order custom garments. The insurgence of ready-to-wear fueled the buy-at-home catalog market.

AND HOW HAVE YOU BEEN SPENDING YOUR TIME??

President Russ told us in his message that in this shutdown, he’s picked up hi guitar and is well on the road toforming a new wave, punk, heavy metal group as soon as he can fit into those skin-tight leather britches Jeanniebought him! And, it seems, several others of you have been staying occupied. For instance:

New member Scott Hollestelle:I’m new to the club (my first meeting was the club’s last before this shutdown…maybeI’m bad luck???). While the extent of my previous work on my 1928 Model A was anoil change, I decided to try and fix the overheating problem. I’ve replaced theradiator, fan (4-blade), water pump, hoses, clamps, and for good measure, cleaned outthe oil pan! I’ve learned a lot shut in at home and now have what seems to be a muchhappier Model A. And my Dad, who restored it in the 70s, it very happy to hear of allthe progress.I look forward to getting to know the members better once we’re back on a schedule.Good job, Scott!

Gayle Fitzpatrick has also been staying productive:JUST AN FYI: My new hobby is eating every few hours and in between searching for hand sanitizer, antibacterialwipes & antibacterial spray. We’ll be looking for you in the food lines around Granada Hills, Gayle.

Sondra and Steve Kurtz are experiencing a synergistic shut down. They have been sorting through old picturesand The Rumble Sheet now has several thousand more photos in it archives, (as as we understand it, they’re NOTfinished as much as they’re BORED!). So Sondra, who prides herself on her culinary skills have been bakingbread, making smoothies, rice pudding (excuse my drool) and has been feeding them to Steve. The synergy here

comes from the fact thatSteve eats the bread andSondra gains the weight! That’s true partnership. Stevehas spent his time away frompicture sorting growing hishair and once again, in an actof synergy, Sondra cuts the hair. Sondra’s had a year or twoexperience trimming their dog’s hair. Sondra, you do a goodjob! It’s recommended you call for an appointment.

You have to know that Ron Mosher and Carol are not just watching the cloudsdrift by. Ron’s much too enterprising:

Before After

Sondra’s Challah Bread

This is the way Ron shoulddress when he hands you yourinvoice!

What else have you been doing?

Sam Platts took to musing about the bygone halcyon days of his Wisconsin boyhood. (Yes they do: Wisconsinhas several halcyon days either side of July 4!): Bob and Leon were waiting for me to finish up my dishwashing job at the Elk Restaurant that night because I hada car! ( I got $7.00 for ten hours of washing dishes and peeling potatoes. ) My car was a 31 Tudor with one smallproblem. When the lights were on the engine died. No big problem. With Bob and Leon onboard we were driving out to thelake, eight miles down a dark, winding road. We didn’t need the lights except when another car came towards us,then I turned on the lights and the engine died. As soon as the other car passed, I turned the lights off and we wenton our way. Back at the Restaurant the next day, I told the retired Navy cook about it. He was also a mechanic. He volunteered to help me with the headlights.I don’t know if we ever got that problem fixed, but the cook also offered me a job in the kitchen assisting him infood preparation. Being 16, and no great genius, I said, “No, I’ll stick with washing dishes and peeling potatoes.”So when I went to the great University, I had no job and was always broke. Hamburgers cost .35 cents and I onlyhad .25. If I had learned cooking when it was offered, I could have had a job and not gone hungry.

Valerie and Carroll Vaughn had a bit of a rude awakening-Valerie and I were down to our last 2000 rolls of toilet paper so wedecided to run out to get some where we found ourselves in a wee bitof trouble.... They said that a mask and gloves were enough to go tothe supermarket. They lied, everyone else has clothes on.....In all seriousness, we are doing fine. We have been staying inside andare being careful. I have been spending some of my time getting theDonovan motor ready for the 1931 Woody. We were sad to hear thatboth the CCRG and the National Convention were cancelled as wewere registered to attend both. We are optimistic this will be over soonand we look forward to touring in the A soon. We hope everyone isstaying healthy.Enjoy this last tidbitCarroll and Valerie

You can bet that if anyone can find something to do it would be Mike Culp:Well, having been ordered to shelter in place now for what seems like a year we all are trying to stay busy. Iwould never have imagined that I would get excited over getting out of the house for a Road Trip to the DENTISTor "Oh Boy" the mail came I wonder what bills came in. You can only watch so many old reruns of Perry Masonor Tales of Wells Fargo. But we find ways to overcome, for me it has been taking all my old cassette tapes and

converting them to CD's. I can now listen to all that great music that I collected in the60's and 70's in my car (wait can't do, can't drive). Another project is that I havecollected several old tube radios over the years and I am restoring them. My favoriteis a portable radio which is a Zenith Super Transoceanic Model H500. If you'relooking for something to do "Google It" if you're interested. This radio uses a 90 voltbattery (found a reproduction one). Finding the vacuum tubes online, replacing andre-soldering the capacitors and resistors takes a lot of bench work, but it now fires upand gets one station. Will keep at it and hopefully get it all working on all stations. That's how I am spending my time and I hope that you are all safe and not stir crazyyet. Well Gotta Go and get the soldering iron hot.

Mike’s not positive but he doesn’t THINK this is the sameone he had confiscated in junior high when he had it in hisshirt pocket listening to a Hollywood Angels game.

Wow! Anything else?

On the cusp of a major career decision, avid hobbyist Larry Margules and wife Lynley report:Hi Model A ers.So what have we been doing during our lockdown. I will be out of work until sometime in June except for a fewEmergency Cataract Surgeries. Most can wait unless you need to pass the DMV Eye Test.Lynley is doing Tele Health from home. Her company is trying to keep up with all the needs of the Speech Delayed andAutistic Population. She never signed up for this chapter in her career.I have been thinking about retirement. After this practice session I will put it off for a few more years. Too much timeoff does not make me more productive. I feel I can always do it tomorrow. Not so when I am working. My Woodworking Teaching is on Hold. 6 Students in a class room is a no- no. Last class was March 14 th. in SanCarlos—Just under the wire. Next class—who knows? So I have worked on some simple projects:A Bird FeederWe love all the birds we have attracted -Finches—Scrub Jays-Morning Doves-Sparrows- Dark Eyed Juncos-and a very rareBlack Headed Grosbeak. Now I am busy chasing off the Squirrels that have invaded our Bird Habitat.

A Perpetual CalendarLynley will use as a Teaching ToolPlus some more big and small projects to comeIf I want to use my garage workshop here is the drill. Move the modern car off the driveway andpull the Model A out.Now I use this time to blow the cob webs out of the Model A. Sesnon Ave. is a 2.5 mile drag strip.

Top Speed 120 MPH. Oh wait-I have a Mosher Speedo. Now I can move the tools around and get some woodworking done if I don’t get arrested for speeding.Driving the Model A cheers up the neighbors so take your cars out and don’t forget to sound your horn—Ahooga.

Ron Waters and his wife Janet had a drive by opportunity last month:We had an opportunity today to be in a 89 car parade for a friend who had a birthday -she turned 89. We were theonly vintage car, but there were lots of people and it was fun. they let us be at the front of the parade.I opened the rumble seat for my wife, to practice social distancing, but she refused to sit back there. HaRon / Janet WatersHello to everyone

Finally, for this session, Harvey and Roberta Jacobs report of a new mission for Gibraltar Plastics, their oldcompany (now being run by son, Keith). They are helping the USA meet it’s needs for PPEs as they have re-tooled andare in the process of making face shields.

Friends and vendors to the hobby. Make sure we support them!

A few words about Alan:Back in the late 1980's just after we joined the San Fernando Model A Club, Charlie and Betty Salverson, my late wife Elaine and I decidedthat we would venture to Santa Ynez for a meet we heard about called "Wings 'n Wheels." Salversons had a 1929 Sport Coupe, while the Smithssported a 1930 Coupe. The problem was that Smiths also had an airplane, a near antique, a 1950 Beechcraft Bonanza that we wished to take to theMeet, as well as the Ford. The ladies had a Woodland Hills Woman's Club friend whose husband we conned into driving the Smith's Coupe. This leftKeith free to fly the Bonanza and the three ladies to Santa Inez for the Meet. As expected, we all had a ball! After the Smiths and Salversons regular attendance at Wings 'n Wheels, we convinced a group of the San Fernando Members that they should joinus and they soon became regulars at the Meet as well. None were more loyal attendees than Susie and Alan Bennett. Alan regularly organized agroup to attend the outdoor play on Thursday night. I don't think that there were any with better attendance. After Elaine's passing and Joannand I had wed, we also were regular attendees and I even got the job as Registrar when Leo Gay passed and the Vintage Aeroplane Association tookover Meet Sponsorship. On many occasions that Joann and I attended, so too did my younger son, Terry and his family of four. Our granddaughterKristine loved going there. It was very exciting for her. Krissie was a 'Special Needs' child, but was excited by her surroundings and lovedmaking friends with anyone who paid attention to her. From the very start she was attracted to Alan, mainly because he recognized her needto be 'friendly.' I mentioned to Alan how pleased my family members were to see this attachment between himself and my granddaughter. Hisexplanation; his brother had 'special needs' and he had nurtured him and it was a natural thing for him to reach out to my Krissie. Over theyears, I have always admired Alan for this tenderness towards those who need this kind attention. I have yet to tell Krissie that Alan is nolonger with us. I know this will be a very sad time for her.
