Dear Parents and Carers, The month of May came and went in the blink of an eye and what we do as a school community is getting even harder to keep track of. Our Year 11 students are focussing on the task at hand and are coping admirably under the intense pressure of their GCSE examinations. Three more weeks of hard work to go, then a deserved rest from revision and stress. The reward of all of the months of hard work will undoubtedly bear fruit in the Summer. For the remaining half term of this academic year I cannot emphasise enough the importance of attendance and punctuality to school for the remaining year groups; success in school starts with great attendance. If the students are here and ready to learn, then great progress is the simple outcome. The summer term is always that little bit different as Year 11 will leave, Sports Day looms large and the school begins to get ready for the new intake of students from numerous primary schools in the area. Dear Parents and Carers,

The month of May came and went in the blink of an eye and what we do as a school community

is getting even harder to keep track of. Our Year 11 students are focussing on the task at hand

and are coping admirably under the intense pressure of their GCSE examinations. Three more

weeks of hard work to go, then a deserved rest from revision and stress. The reward of all of the

months of hard work will undoubtedly bear fruit in the Summer.

For the remaining half term of this academic year I cannot emphasise enough the importance of

attendance and punctuality to school for the remaining year groups; success in school starts with

great attendance. If the students are here and ready to learn, then great progress is the simple

outcome.

The summer term is always that little bit different as Year 11 will leave, Sports Day looms large

and the school begins to get ready for the new intake of students from numerous primary

schools in the area. A brilliantly vibrant place to be!

Spanish Spelling Bee

A massive well done to Ben Stenson in Year 7 who came first in the North West Spanish Spelling

Bee heats! He will now compete in the National finals in Cambridge! Also a big well done to our

other Year 7 Spelling Bee finalists Charlotte Rawling and Andreea Banu for getting through to the

North West competition! We will keep you updated about how Ben gets on in Cambridge. Muy

Bien Ben!

BTEC Music Visit

On 18th May a group of our Year 10 BTEC Music students visited Aintree Racecourse to go behind

the scenes at a “Lightning Seeds” concert. The students got the chance to conduct several interviews

with various people from the music industry including the promoter from the Jockey Club Live and

some of the event management and safety companies which are used. Students were also given a

tour of the venue and were able to sit in on the “Lightning Seeds” sound check. The group then got

to attend the live concert later on that evening. The students had a fantastic time and were able to

get a real insight into the workings of the music industry.

Czech Exchange

On Sunday, 22nd April, 15 students and 2 staff set off to Trutnov in the

Czech Republic as part of our exchange programme. For one week, students

from Litherland High stayed with students from the Grammar School

Trutnov. Students from both schools had been working on projects

surrounding their local National Parks and the conservation work they do.

During the week long trip, our students had the chance to visit many local

attractions such as Adršpach Rocks (The Rock Town) and The Krkonoše

Tree Top Trail. Of course, there was some time for socialising with their

host students too and our students enjoyed trips to the cinema, local bowling

alley, Zoo and a day shopping in Prague. It really was a fantastic week and a

wonderful experience for our Year 8 - Year 10’s. We look forward to

running the programme again soon.

Mental Health Awareness Week 2018

Our annual Mental Health Awareness Week took place this month and, as usual, we had

a fantastic range of activities going on to help promote good mental health. Here at

Litherland High we know how important it is to raise the profile of good mental health

and work to break the stigma of talking about mental health issues.

Healthy eating and good mental health

The week started off with a visit from Catering Academy’s Nutritionist who brought her

fantastic ‘Smoothie Bike’ and a whole range of fresh fruit and vegetables donated by local

suppliers. Students were able to pick what they wanted to go in their smoothie, put it in

the blender and whisk it up with the bike! Healthy eating and keeping fit at the same time!

Students were also given free fruit and recipes to try themselves at home!

Visitors from St Nicholas’ Nursing Home

Our students hosted “Afternoon Tea” for some of the residents from St Nicholas’

Nursing Home. Students welcomed the visitors and served them tea and cakes while a

number of our Performing Arts students provided some light entertainment. The

students spoke to residents and had a lovely time chatting about school and what they

were doing for Mental Health Awareness Week. One of the residents used to go to this

school and was very pleased to come back and visit. The students were a credit to our

school and we can’t wait to welcome our visitors back in the near future.

Talk Time and lunch-time activities

We had a wide rage of lunch-time activities taking place during the week to promote

good mental health. The “Talk Time” area was run by some of our Ambassadors where

students were encouraged to write down what they do to relax and display it on our

dedicated Mental Health Awareness board. Our Sports Leaders ran “Playground

Games” to get people active, there was jewellery making and mindful colouring in

Starbooks and dedicated reading sessions in the ICC. Students could take part in Yoga

sessions and the staff took part in a “Relaxation Session” along with the welcome

return of the room to room “Tea Trolley” service. On the Friday we held a cake sale

and staff and students donated a great selection of cakes. Leo Jones in Year 7 even

made a special LHS cake for the occasion. Well done Leo! Students were given spe-

cial Livos and compliments cards to give to staff and their peers saying something nice.

Staff also displayed special signs on their doors describing what they do to relax. There

was a plant sale to promote the benefits of gardening and being outside and drop-in

sessions from the National Citizens Service and Sefton Young Carers. A fantastic week

was had by all which really helped to raise awareness of mental health.

New Football Kit

A massive thank you to the Sovini Group for sponsoring our brand new football kit.

Pictured are team Captain, Scott Heath and Midfielder, Harry Pike modelling the new

look. The boys love the new kit and cannot wait to play in it next season. Let’s hope it

brings them as much luck as they have had this season!

Rugby

A special mention for the Year 8 boys who participated in the Rugby 7's

Festival at Waterloo Rugby Club. It was their first competitive experience of

rugby. They didn't win a game but they continued to work hard and never

gave up. They improved every game and did manage to score 3 tries, which

they were so pleased with. Jacques Johnston was the player of the

festival. There were definitely a few sore bodies from all the tackles!!

Congratulations to you all!

Young Leaders

Our Young Leaders were very busy during the last couple of weeks of May

helping out and organising various events. They officiated at the Mini Red

Tennis tournament for Years 3 and 4. Absolutely fantastic encouragement and

leadership skills were shown. Our young leaders also supported the Secondary

Quad Kids Competition. South Sefton SSP tweeted “Events such as this

couldn’t happen without you. Your efforts ensured all the events ran efficiently

and the competitors had a great experience!” Well done to everyone

involved!

Quad Kids Athletics Competition

A big well done to all of the Year 7 and 8 students who took part in the

Quad Kids Athletics Competition at Litherland Sports Park. The Year 7

girls team won the competition and will now go on to represent Sefton at

the Merseyside School Games in July. We will keep you updated about how

they get on. Well done to all of the other teams who took part, you made

us very proud.

Echo Cup Final

A massive well done to our Year 9 football team who took on Cardinal

Heenan in the final of the Echo Cup at Liverpool FC Academy. Unfortunately

it wasn’t their day and Cardinal Heenan won the game 4-0. However, our

boys put up a fantastic fight and it was an incredible experience for everyone

involved. The game was covered by Liverpool Echo journalist, David Prentice

who said “First time finalists Litherland High underlined their status as a

growing force in junior football with a spirited display. Litherland more than

played their part in a fine final”. Well done boys, bring on next year!

ICC Book Club

The inaugural meeting of the ICC Book Club took place this month. Higher Level

Teaching Assistant, Miss Bentley, and four Year 7 students (Amber, Lauren, Charlotte

and Jess) will meet once every two weeks to discuss a current release. For their first

book club read, the students have been reading “Children of Blood and Bone” by Tomi

Adeyemi. This is a young adult fantasy book set in Africa amongst warring tribes. We

really hope the students enjoy reading this novel. Copies of “Children of Blood and

Bone” will be available in the ICC for the rest of the students to read very soon.

GCSE Chinese students visit the Terracotta Warriors

Our GCSE Chinese students have been on a very special trip to see the Terracotta

Warriors Exhibition at the World Museum in Liverpool. Lillie, Jess, Chelsea and

Mrs Heath had a fantastic afternoon at the exhibition and said it was an amazing

experience!

My first year in Liverpool

It has only been a few months since I arrived in Liverpool. At first I was quite

worried, new school, different teachers and of course making new friends.

Now I can compare and although nothing is perfect, it would be nice to have

the best of now in the UK and what I had in Spain. I enjoy walking calmly to

school every morning - in Spain I had to catch the bus. Litherland High is

amazing, it has everything that any student would want. My school in Spain was

a bit old and not very well kept. Some halls had paint chipped off the walls but

we usually covered them with many posters and other crafts we did in class.

Our school yard didn’t have any grass. During breaks we had to use the space

to play. Over here we don’t go out to play much, I don’t know, maybe

because of the weather! In Spain, we had much more sun but the winter is

colder here. The teachers are great, they are helpful, patient and, at times,

even fun. Some of the teachers I had in Spain weren’t much fun. Many times in

class I just stared out of the window hoping that time would go faster so I

could enjoy being with my friends. So now, after four months, I can say that I

like it here. I feel very happy with the school and I am glad that I came.
