Houston’s Police Officer MemorialWith Police Week and Police Officers Memorial Day happening this month, it is appropriate that wenote one of the Region’s landmarks which is dedicated to fallen officers.

Artist was Jesus Bautista Moroles. This is a 1990 Granite Sculpture, located at 1400 MemorialDrive in Houston. Given to the City of Houston by the Houston Endowment, the WorthamFoundation, the Linbeck Foundation, the Knox Foundation, the Cullen Foundation, Fayez Sarofimand Co., the Rockwell Fund, the Brown Foundation, the M.D. Anderson Foundation, the ScurlockFoundation, Neva West, and Albert and Margret Alkek.

Houston Police Officers' Memorial is the site for the annual procession and wreath-laying ceremonythat honors Houston's slain police officers. The site is guarded 24 hours a day by on-duty officers. This memorial was commissioned in order to honor Houston's police force and the officers whohave lost their lives in the line of duty. It is a tribute recognizing the sacrifices police officers makeon a daily basis for the City of Houston.

This carved grey Texas granite monolith is 120 feet by 120 feet. It is in the shape of a Greek cross(four equal arms) consisting of five ziggurat pyramids. Each pyramid is 40 feet on a side. Thecentral pyramid rises 12 feet aboveground while the outer four are sunkan equal distance into the turf.

There is a reflecting pool surroundedby four inscribed slabs of polishedTexas pink granite located at thesculptures apex (of the centralpyramid). The inscriptions bear thenames of over eighty officers thatdied in the line of duty. A smallerversion of the reflection pool is nearthe parking lot, for those visitors whoare unable to climb to the apex.

MARCH AND APRIL 2015The LCCPAAA has continued its efforts in supporting the League City Police Department.Fundraising continues in order to purchase the K-9 Unit a new bite suit.

The Officer of the Month for March, was Officer Noe Perez. He is a 10 year veteran officer witha stellar record. He also went above and beyond the call of duty by ensuring the safety of oneof our elderly citizens, on his own time and with his own money.

Our Officer of the Month for April is Officer Eric Cox. In addition to being one of our awesomeK9 officers, who is partnered with Pako, Officer Cox has many other attributes, including beinga Certified EMT. When a call came concerning an elderly male who was not breathing and inpossible cardiac arrest, Officer Cox arrived on the scene within 3 minutes of being dispatched. With the assistance of a family member, life-saving measures were performed until the arrivalof the League City EMS.

We continue to enjoy having guest speakers who continue to be informative and entertaining. We are looking forward to the Village Fair, which is the League City Music Festival and theopportunity to serve our community.

Dickinson Citizens Police Academy Class XXV “looks high and low”

The month of April found the Dickinson Citizens Police Academy doing building searchesfor the 'bad guys.’ Using a firearm/ flashlight and a ‘slice the pie’ search techniques taughtby Officer Valdez, students entered darkened rooms looking for a suspect(s). The‘suspect’ DPD Canine Officer Bruce Stewart kept their heartrates up and hid in placesthey never expected. These scenarios are designed to help citizens understand what itis like for officers to conduct building searches when they have to deal with the real ‘badguys.’

Helping with logistics and guiding the teams in the building was DCPAAA member NynaBurright. Officer Walt Candelari photographed their searches to provide future trainingtools.

A very special “Thank You” goes to Pastor, Dr. William H. King of the Greater HopeMissionary Baptist Church and his congregation for allowing us to use their facilities.

NEW ANIMAL SHELTER & ADOPTION CENTER OPEN

La Porte now has a new animal shelter and adoption center open on Spencer Highway, partlyin thanks to LPCPAAA volunteers with a love in their hearts for all animals.Throughout the past year volunteers Gary Tandy and Ken Rose were active members of the LPAnimal Shelter & Adoption Center landscape committee and tasked with organizing and plan-ning for donations to beautify the new facility. To help facilitate the landscaping, a team ofvolunteers bundled up on a chilled-to-the-bone-cold workday in February to lay grass, plantflower beds, help assemble benches and beautify the outdoors. As a result, the landscaping wasperfectly in place during several pre-celebrations and the grand opening. To ensure potential adoptive 'parents' can view the felines in a clean, natural, and fun environ-ment, the LPCPAAA also made a donation toward a cat condo. Our special thanks to Paula Wohnoutka, Liz Lainhart, Vicky Copley, Norma Elliott, Kim Guarino, the Guyon family, Mikal Luzon, Brenda Pritchard, Paula Rizzuto, Shirley Rogers, Emma Zech,Virginia Chase, and Josh Zech who assisted during the ribbon cutting ceremony and public openhouse days by greeting guests, serving lunch, overseeing children activities, and providing toursof the facility.!! We couldn't leave out Rusty & Sandi Paulus, who worked for hours on end todesign, create and build the Fido collection boxes which are placed around town. 100% of thedonations go toward additional animal services. Oh, and the best part of the whole day....one ofour volunteers adopted a pet and the center has been overwhelmed with adoptions!

GREAT TEXAS WARRANT ROUNDUP The annual roundup kicked off with a bang asvolunteers such as Richard Browder, Richard Tilley, Mikal Luzon, Liz Lainhart, and MilissaGuyon took to the phone banks at the Municipal Court throughout a week to make severalthousand courtesy calls to individuals with outstanding warrants. As a result of their collaborativeefforts with the court clerks, over $40K in fines were collected. This is a significant increaseover 2014. Way to go team!!

MARDI GRAS ON MAIN ST. Volunteers love to have a good time so the LP Mardi GrasFestival was just the ticket! For three full hours on February 21st, the sights and sounds of MainSt. included the Mambo Jazz Kings, food trucks, stilt walkers, face painters, the King & Queen, and much more!
